Sheltie
What's up with the Sheltie? I have Shelties and goldens.....they go together like P&J, or even a bologna, pickle and potato chip sandwich!
Sheltie
Where do you live? There should be a local dog club that can put you in touch with the nearest Sheltie rescue.
Unlike shelters, rescues really RESCUE and find forever homes.
Sheltie -- could it be
What I would do but this is me -- I would introduce myself to them. Perhaps someone was already supposed to have been "dog sitting" like you want to provide but were not doing their job. So I would introduce myself, and say that you noticed that their dog had really missed them, was very lonely and you are so happy that they are home now for the dog's sake. If they were paying someone to take care of the dog and they did not do their job they might appreciate hearing about it so they can take it up with them. I would like to know if someone I was paying was not taking care of my animals. So perhaps give them theh benefit of the doubt until you meet them but in a nice way let them know how lonely the dog was, etc. You might also call the PD and ask them to follow up on the complaints with the people. Then offer your paid services if they are to ever go away again. But I would definitely not let it slide and talk with them as it sounds like you are not the only one that this was upsetting to. Good luck.
Sheltie update
I am so sorry I didn't post this sooner. Been swamped at work and haven't looked at the board in awhile. Well the neighbors have not come home yet (I used a word to describe them but the filter would not allow me to use that word in this post :-o) The dog is supplied with food and water and a place to sleep (a bed in an open large cage on the back porch area so she can get in and out anytime she wants). Anyway...the other night the dog was barking (howling and howling). I was crying for it. Hubby went over to pet it and play with it (he usually does around 11 or so when everyone is asleep and no lights are on (except a dim streetlight down the road), so the other night it was crying and he went outside and a police guy pulled up. Evidently they received a few calls from the neighbors about the dog. So hubby explained the situation to him. He said he was going to put the dog in the garage to calm it down a bit and the next day was going to call animal control to come and pick her up. HOORAY! That was night before last. Today hubby went out and dog is there, so don't know what's going on. We re not confrontrational and just moved to the area. We do not even know what the neighbors look like. They have two pickup trucks with a bunch of redneck stickers all over it, so we aren't saying anything to them. Still hoping animal control will come and get the dog.
Another Sheltie update
Since I last sent the message a couple hours ago the owners have come home. HOORAY!!!!! HOORAH!!!!! What a relief. I've cried I don't know how many times over the past two weeks for that poor lonely dog. It broke my heart so bad. But glad they are back. The positive outcome of the situation is that now my husband and I are putting into works a plan to start up a pet sitting business. No pet should ever have to stay alone for so long.
2 cats and a sheltie
The cats are Lucky and Tripp and the dog is Casey.
I loved my Sheltie...sm
But he wasn't the best with kids, even though we got him when he was a puppy. I don't know if it was just his personality. He was okay with my kids, but he didn't care for other kids when they visited. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
1 Sheltie, 1 golden, 1 Brat Cat
Presently:
Crissie, bi blue Sheltie.
Jamie, golden
Kazie, AKA Brat Cat.
Just in the past year I lost:
Starting in March, 06 my 21-year-old kitty Dinger, then in July 10-year-old Taz Duh Golden (not too bright), 15 days later, B.J.'s a cat who absolutely loved Taz and I know mourned himself to death!, then in Feb 07, 'Stash a 15-year-old kitty.
Happily, I've had many grace my heart before this and are now waiting for me at the Bridge. Three are my absolute heart dogs....Jennifer and Tyde were goldens and Casie was a Sheltie/Shepard mix. I miss these little critters so much!
I have a sheltie that ate the wall, among other things sm
Ate the carpet, bath mats, loved to steal clothes out of the dryer while unloading, and dryer sheets (very toxic for dogs). We decided she had separation anxiety. Tried the whole ticking clock thing, radio on, and crate etc. We had a sturdy nylon crate (the $70 kind, not the flimsy $20 kind) and she ate through it. I finally had to end up working with her in my office, which is upstairs, and slowly gradually moved her across the room, into the hallway, and finally downstairs. It was a long process. Took a training class and of course they say "a bored dog is a bad dog." Had bunches of toys of different types, textures, strengths, bones, etc. Nothing worked until we did the progressive separation technique.
good luck, and I hope you still watch out for Sheltie

My Sheltie eats dog food on a regular basis...
but he loves baby carrots. My cat, on the other hand, LOVES apples. Never had a cat that ate anything other than cat food.
