Re your reply to "fad diet" - sm

I did want to say something like this, but did not get around to doing so. So glad you did. It was the only negative reply to my inquiry. All other replies were positive, supportive, and helpful and I do indeed appreciate those messages.

Low carb is not a "fad diet," but sm
rather a way of life.  Once you try it, you're hooked.  The energy that comes from eliminating the processed carbs is amazing.  You sleep better, feel better, look better.  It's not a fad diet and is not unhealthy.  The weight gain comes if you start adding in all the processed carbs again, which shows you exactly how bad they really are for you.  One can say the same thing about your "diet" suggestion.  If one stops counting the calories and goes back to eating as they did prior, the weight will come back.  Low carb teaches you to eat to fuel your body.  Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Probably the statement I made saying I'm wondering if this is all there is to life would be sounding like I'm depressed, but honestly I'm not. I've been married for 25 years and I'm a very optimistic person. So much my sister-in-law once told me - "can't you ever be upset about something without trying to find the good in it" LOL, and I do laugh a lot during the day. That's not to say I don't have an occasional "down" time, but in today's world who doesn't. I'm just tired of being "dumbed down" by the news and now especially with all the election coverage. Just getting tired of our news media whores not giving us the truth. That's why I feel like I'm living in a Matrix and this all is not real. I think I will follow the advise of one of the posters and turn off the news for a couple weeks and instead turn on the Food Channel and pet my cat. :-)
diet
You go, girl!  Just don't get discouraged.  I started LAST June to lose 30 pounds and have finally succeeded, keeping it off even throughout the holidays.  I walk 3 miles a night and really enjoy the quiet time.
HMR diet?
Has anyone ever went to a medically supervised HMR diet?  If so, did it work for you.  Thanks.
Sorry to tell you this, but I had my diet dr.
But I don't think the "diet" is good for me. BUT I'm ADDICTED!! Oh well...
RE sugar in diet

When my mother was dx as being diabetic, I started using sweetener substitutes, thinking that would be better than real sugar.  Dr. Gott, a physician who responds to letters much like Dear Abby in our local newspaper, had a patient write in that when she went on vacation and no longer used the sweeteners during that time, her leg pain went away. When she got back from vacation and started drinking her diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, her pain came back.  She was able to determine that she has an "allergy" to the stuff.  I only drank one diet soda a day and one cup of tea with artificial sweetener a day, but I thought I'd try this with my leg pain/issues.  Hard to believe, but it's made a world of difference.  I've been 3 weeks without the stuff and can't believe the difference.

Dr. Gott is a supporter of the no flour, no sugar diet. If it contains flour or sugar, to not eat it.  A lot of people have wrote to him with success with being on the diet. I did it for a while, did great, but like all diets I didn't make it a lifelong commitment.

Diet pop is NO calories! nm

What does your diet consist of?...sm
You really shouldn't need supplements if you are eating a well-balanced diet. Personally, I only take Viactiv Chews because I can't stand milk, but I can eat yogurt and cheese okay.
If not managed by diet alone, you really need
to be on some kind of medication because my former husband died from kidney failure and this is 1 of the big causes for the kidneys failing but I am sure you knew that already. My present husband has been the same weight for years and years and it is not a weight thing for him and his very well controlled but again just this numbness now that he says in 1 leg. No other complications at all with his. Best to get that diabetes under good control. He does not indulge in sweets (which he loves) or other food items which he considers bad for diabetes and I have seen his blood sugars running in the low 70s or so and they are usually pretty normal.
I don't like Science Diet
either. I try to read the ingredients on pet foods when deciding which ones to buy, and it seems like Science Diet is full of by-products and useless stuff. So why when I go to the vets does he prescribe my cat Science Diet for UTI?? Do they not know what foods are good and which ones aren't. And I'm sure if I asked the vet which food to put my new puppy on, he would probably say Science Diet. I've been buying Royal Canin for my dogs, but now with the recall, don't know if I trust them either.
Anyone doing the new Alli diet?

I tried this several years ago when it had another name. This is not a good deal. You are only able to eat a small amount of fat content before the diarrhea explodes and it does, really orange runny and you cannot make to the bathroom before you are really in a mess. I was watching a program just now where they were showing the amount of fat allowed with this drug and they showed even green beans had fat contents - this is not a drug that most would like.

Alli diet
I lost 75 lbs using the Brand name equivalent of Alli. Alli is only 60 mg, whereas Xenical was 120 mg each capsule. So I don't think a person would get in trouble with that dose of Alli. Anyway, if you try to not overdo on the fat intake, you should be fine. I couldn't have done it without Xenical (Alli).
Especially since with all these diet pills
they say that it works in conjunction with diet and exercise. Duh, that is what ends up causing the weight loss! The pill has nothing to do with it.
scient diet
That is great how you do the chicken, I do that too for my dog and cats. Varied diet is the best. Word of caution on Science diet, vets do not know nutrition and Science diet sponsors a lot of the vet schools. I would not recommend science diet to anyone, Google it and find out about it, I hope this helps. On my dog boards we call it Science Death, horrible ingredients. Just a fancy name to jack up the price. All for the animals.

Diet Pill

I was also taking this med for weight loss.  At one time it was a combo of two drugs, they called them ... “Fen-phen” diet pills.  Although I did not take the combo I took the one you were inquiring about.  It made me very jumpy, but also brought out an underlying condition (diagnosed by the same doc I got the pills from), and messed up my metabolism, as well as give me High blood pressure, due to the damage the pill had caused, the two issues I have cannot be reversed and I have been living with them since that time.  Mind you, this was about 12 to 15 years ago when the combo came out.  My advice is this, do your research, talk to the docs, read, read, read, and then if you think that you will be able to work with the side effects, and  the benfits outweigh the risk, you should do what you feel is right for you.

Yes I did lose the weight, about 60 pounds at that time but like one other person stated I gained back plus 80.  It is like a HYPER drug for your metabolism.  Please be careful and good luck.

Thanks, diet alone never worked, have sm
self-image and fulfillment issues,so doing the whole program works for me, I hope I don't fall off the wagon as well, but I used to just do the diet thing, never changed my stinking thinking about the rest of my life. Hope you find your way too, perimenopause is very confusing, lots of issues come up; not only weight but you realize life as you knew it is changing and you're getting older, etc., hope you feel better. Reward yourself for small baby steps. I found a hot bath and nice lotion helps, perhaps as more of a reward than a necessity. All my best!
worse than a diet
I had a very loved border collie for years that was not hugely obese, but overweight. I liked to keep dry food in his bowl, if it was empty i put some in it. Well "Thomas" developed diabetes. I noticed his excessive thirst and then before I took him to the vet, he suddenly went blind. The vet said his blood was thick like syrup. Sadly, Thomas is no longer with us. Now I measure my dogs food and don't project my own love of food onto my pets, vowing I'd never be guilty of overfeeding again. I hope my sad case will help another realize the importance of feeding responsibly.
Have you changed anything in your diet?

My sister had horrible migraines about 20 years ago to the point where she thought she had a brain tumor.  She found out that she has a  lot of allergies to food, MSG being the worst one.  She has to read labels very carefully and the big thing to stay away from is turkey.  Turkey has it's own natural MSG that would put her in bed for a day with a headache if she ate it.

I hope you find a remedy that works.

I'd like to add it to part of my diet
I have one of those nasty yeast infections. I was reading that adding coconut oil to your diet will help clear it up and also will help hair, nails and other things (still reading more about it and learning more from all the websites). So basically I wanted to add 3 tablespoons to my diet each day and also use it to help my skin and hair. I don't want to cook with it though.
fat free diet
I would give them some skin and some fat or their coats will dry out. I trim the meat and give my dog what I will not eat. That is still better than dog food!
I know diet and exercise are important as
well as cutting out sugars, bread, etc. I'm doing that and have been for a while.  Please keep your comments to yourself.  I'm asking a simple question about a "certain named product"- is it that difficult to answer without stating your "opinions" or telling me what supplement you use?  I don't remember asking for your recommendations?
Kids and diet drinks...

My son is having some dental issues and I would like to switch him over to sugar-free drinks...anyone know of any contraindications to an 8 YO consuming artifical sweetners?  He doesn't drink many soft drinks, mostly Gatorade and sweet tea, milk and water, but I'd like to put Splenda in his tea instead of sugar.  Thanks, y'all!

Diet soda isn't the problem

I saw a report on that on TV several weeks ago.  Evidently, the thinking is that if you're drinking diet soda you'll feel free to eat more high-caloric foods ?!?!  The only thing I've heard that's concrete about diet soda is that it can cause loose bowel movements and the carbonation saps phosphorus, which could be detrimental to bones.

This is probably the lamest of all the scare tactics that the Food Police have come out with yet!  I believe there are factions out there who won't be satisfied until everybody is eating nothing but veggies and drinking nothing but water.

The next lamest one I've heard is that air conditioning causes people to be overweight.  Why?  Because when you're hot you burn more calories!

I stopped listening to "experts" a long time ago!

Has anyone ever tried the cabbage soup diet and if so
did you stay on it longer than a week, what sort of weight did you lose, tell me how you varied the soup, did you use herbs, etc. to change the taste, etc. Oh before being flamed for the staying on more than a week, know it says to stay on only a week but others probably did not go along with this. Thanks everyone!
Cabbage soup diet
I first read about this diet about 35 years ago, as it was published in a popular womans' magazine.  So, it has been around a long time.  I tried it for a week, lost 5 pounds, gained back the weight as soon as I started eating regular food again.  I decided that it is a good side dish as part of a well-balanced reducing diet.  But, it can never work as the only food that I eat on a daily basis.  For one thing, I have to have sufficient protein or my diet doesn't last long.  And what I really want is a plan for life that will help me maintain a good weight once I reach it, without feeling deprived.  I find that canned tuna fish is a good "diet" food because of being low in fat and pretty high in protein and convenient.  Any fish is good as far as that goes.

Mine is putting sauces on vegetables according to cravings.  My son mentioned he had ribs for lunch today and that made me want some so badly I went and put BBQ sauce on my veggies w/ rice!!!

Low-carb diet problems - sm

Have been on a very low-carb but high protein diet for 3 months now. Have been experiencing a bit of shortness of breath and a "catch" in my throat as well as being more thirsty than usual. I have checked out "ketosis" and wonder if that is where I am. Has anyone been on a low-carb diet with similar symptoms?

p.s. Have lost aproximately 25 pounds

Thank you.

When my children were teenagers they did not drive at all.  Even tho I worked full time, I took then where they needed to go & picked up to return home.  Explained to them that if I could not take then, they did not need to go.  This included the prom....No discussion, no argument.  They understood that I am their parent, not a friend & besides, I was not going to pay insurance for teenagers.  My youngest twins graduated in 1986 and after their freshman year in college (no car) I had them take defensive driving.  They purchased their own vehicles.  The year they graduated high school, several schools in the surrounding communities lost, if I remember, around 10-12 teenagers in car accidents......The twins I am referring to are now 36 years old.

Thanks for your reply.........sm
I understand what you are saying and I was not physically forced, no. But I failed to mention that while I was telling her I was really not comfortable with what she was going to do she sort of got angry and said, "just let me do what I do"! At that point I thought, well I must be completely wrong, after all she is supposed to be the expert, no? I am not yet gray and my natural hair is dishwater drab blonde which is why I do only highlights and not color as I mentioned. And this has never been damaging to my hair. But when I do go gray, I may keep it natural as well ;)
Thanks for reply

OK--number one, since no one knows me, you don't know that I am interfering, or will ever interfere, just came here to "vent," since this board is anonymous.  Have been nothing but supportive of my daughter and kept my feelings about the ex to myself--never say anything critical to my granddaughter.  Number two, Emily DID get an Easter basket from her mother--just not a huge one crammed with candy, toys, and unnecessary cr**.  My former son-in-law needs to pay his back child support before he buys this type of thing.  Number three, my GD's father is the one who has always spoiled her, and my daughter has HAD to be the disciplinarian and "heavy."  Finally, for those who said to be more conscientious with dental care, my daughter, who is self-employed, had to beg him to carry dental insurance with his company after Emily was born--he said it was "unnecessary," since he has false teeth and would never benefit from it personally.  This is the kind of father he was/is.

Thank you to all who offered kind advice and sympathy.

I am with you - I guess not many people here scrapbook. It is my passion - and the only thing I splurge on.

I have not tried any of the programs because I usually like to do my own thing, but I have seen some that looked kind of interesting at Target and Wal-Mart. I can't remember the brand. I have been tempted to try one just to see what they had to offer and maybe some more ideas. Thanks for the website - I'm going to check it out.

Thanks for your reply. I could not
agree more. The problem here was not, and I emphasize was not socialization. I know this dog, I know the history and I know the people. Any Rescue group thoroughly checks UT homes before placement. These people in her former placements simply did not know what to do for her after giving all the love they had. It took a long time, and it has been recommended when a dog has this amount of fear to actually lie down on the floor face down so the dog does not fell threatened, let it slowly come closer to you. My friend cried herself to sleep and many days over frustration. She is the one who did not give up.Unfortunately, as you pointed out, money is the bottom line mass breed these poor animals and have them packed in filthy cages with wire bottoms for profit. It sickens me.

What you need to do is take the ink cartridge out of the printer and very carefully shake it gently so the ink is spread evenly. The reason it is not printing uniformly means it is getting low on ink.
thanks for your reply (please see msg)
I hope you don't mind, but I just pasted your answer and sent it to my husband - he is staying the last two nights of the campout and will get my email that is printed out by the staff at the camp facility. I also know that the leaders read the emails before distributing them and I thought your answer was awesome! I want my son to enjoy scouting, not be miserable. If he is going to be miserable, I would rather he not do it at all. I am a Brownie leader for my daughter and have a full-time job so I don't feel I can dedicate a lot of time to Boy Scouts as well but I think I am going to tell my husband and the other leaders that if things do not change, and my husband insists on making my son go to the campouts, I will be going as well.
Thanks for your reply--
-- if you can't understand why I'd be offended by his comment, then I cannot explain that to you.  You may be right, he probably knows he would not be my first choice for my daughter and no one is really--she and my granddaughter been hurt enough--I want to tell him (and may yet) that I would die for those girls and I hope he would as well.  But he makes them happy, I can accept it.

I understand that it is a poor state.  It also has no state income tax.  I've done as much research as possible for discovery, but I certainly appreciate any and all input.  I'm told it's very beautiful.  He wanted to go where he could do cross-country skiing, etc.

While all divorces are different, if I mentioned his last name it would stand out big-time.  He comes from money, but has never been materialistic (but I was fortunate to have the same situation)..  I know he's a saver big-time, so that's my aim.  His mother bought a house for him for $130K, which he admitted.  It's not revenge, either. I wish him the best.  Like Donald Trump says, "It's nothing personal, it's just business."  Oh, survival, too!

The irony is that both our families are just about identical. My brother is paying for my $300 per hour lawyer.  Full disclosure here...

Thanks for taking time to provide your 2 cents, when you could have been making huge bucks from the Q!

We have tried the kindness thing as well this did not work.  The situation at school, at least with my child, was a threat on a child's life and not being sent home right away as well as some other threats about having to eat bread and water due to low $$ in account.  It is has to stop.  Our children should not have to go to school in fear.  They also should not have to worry about eating!!  The last one is a real biiggie as several mothers  have reported this.  THanks all

It's not really a diet. It is a matter of changing the way you eat, not what you eat. Feel free to e-mail me and I'll give you some specifics.
