Question on will...

I have been put in my grandfather's will and it is in the process of probate. I am not sure what that means, can anyone tell me? Does anyone, on average, know how long before the assets are divided among the individuals in the will? I plan on using the money to live on while going to school this fall. Someone had said it can take a year, but that seems like a long time, especially when the family seems to moving pretty quickly on this and he did have a will and everything is set in place and no one is contesting it. Anyone with legal knowledge or has been through this before, please share your thoughts.
