What kind of miles? Highway or city miles?....
DH says the kind of miles makes a difference. Based on wear and tear I guess. The average person drives about 12K miles a year.
I don't need a DVD player and the price works for me, so I would buy the 2006. JMO.

I have 60-80 to lose (80 pound weight loss being my HS/college weight) and cannot exercise right now except for walking (hurt my arm/shoulder). Since I cannot go to Curves right now until my shoulder is diagnosed and healed (will know the verdict Friday) I plan on getting into a walking plan right now since the weather has finally turned beautiful and am going to try to walk off at least 20 pounds before my OB/GYN appt in 5 weeks. Since you had so much success in 6 weeks of walking, I'd love to know the how much and how often you walked. TIA.

so we always know when they are coming. My BIL is rallying really hard to get them to move to where we live though so he does not have to deal with them anymore (he is the favored child of their 2 sons so to me it is the price he has to pay). We used to live about 20 minutes from them but even then they did not just drop by though they did have keys to the house. We moved 2 hours away just before my first daughter was born (yeah!), had we stayed I know we would have had some issues. They told me a few months after Jess was born that had we stayed they would have been over every day, I told them I would have changed the locks and not answered the door. (I was not kidding). So I would (1) keep your doors locked, you should anyway (2) if they have keys either get them back or change one lock, add deadbolt, whatever so when it is locked they cannot get in with the other key. Simply way of keeping them out, and if they try to visit them, just say no, you cannot come in right now as it is not a good time and to call next time and shut the door. Maybe they will get the message then. Good luck.
it's about 2 miles from the beach
here on the West Coast of Michigan in Muskegon. Bought the house from a man who was a nut and who had bought it in foreclosure for 17K. Huge yard, 100 x 100 feet, all fenced. Two bedrooms, one bath, just over 800 square feet (pretty small). All new siding, all new triple-pane windows, new furnace, new fridge, new hot water heater, new stove (found the receipt, $1700 for the set), and a totally re-done kitchen. It's in the inner city, I call it my "little house in the hood." Taxes are about $900 a year. The only repairs we needed to make were to the plumbing, of which there was none, and I mean none. So, my nephew and I spent just over $200 and learned how to plumb -- all connected and flowing, PVC is my new best friend.
There's tons of houses even cheaper than this here, just not the best neighborhoods, but you can houses anywhere from 2 to 5 to 20 grand as fixer-uppers. I take my child to school of choice out of district, cuz I wanted him to go to school where I went; it's only a 5-mile drive. Gotta love it, good enough for now.

We recently moved 200 miles away and
joined a church after being away from the church for several years. There are so many activities for couples and singles, or both, and not just church/religion related. We have dinners, baseball games, hayrides, dances, etc. and have made several friends in the few months we have been here. We get out more now than ever before. I don't know how old you are, and though I hate to admit it, we joined the seniors center also (you only have to be 50). They do all sorts of things - day trips, 1 and 2 week trips, dinners, plays, game nights, music... I just never thought I would be joining an old folks place, but it's fun and a lot of them are in the 50-60 range. Lots of singles and couples.
20 miles is not far, 1/2 hour drive
if you can stay in his town, for now, and if it's better for the kids, and your first grader is comfortable with people working with him, and it's cheaper, maybe you can go visit your family regularly. A half hour is not far; people drive farther than that one way to work day.
also, it sounds like you agree there was nothing ever in common, it's okay, at least he is caring, and you can remain friends, and he is a good father. It's okay; you'll probably be happier in your own place.

I'm actually closer to Canada (and Winnipeg) than I am to the Twin Cities (at least by a few miles), and it's a town of about 1100 on an Indian reservation (we have more slot machines than residents). :-)

We have 5 acres in a remote county about 12 miles - sm
away. My DH has been wanting to sell but I want to hold on to it. It has already doubled in value in the 5 years we have had it and as the sprawl comes towards us it will get more and more valuable. Plus it is river view land (5 acres), 4 acres cleared and flat and nicely sloped too. If we don't build in the next 10 years we will probably sell it later, figure maybe college money if we don't have enough set aside (we should) but it is nice to know it is there and we can cash it in if needed.
And TV or radio dont mention fog 2 miles away?

To hike 150 miles to the Appalachian Trail
I love to backpack, but I haven't had time to do a nice long trip. I've gotten a lot of obligations off my plate this year, and will have time to go into the woods again. I already have a 70-mile trip planned for spring.
When I die and my survivors put up photos of me around the funeral home, I want most of them to be my smiling face as I stand on a trail with beautiful scenery behind me. :)
I totally agree, my Chevy Suburban has 213,000 miles on it - sm
and going strong. Though they are a lot cheaper used now, friends got theirs for about $14K, we paid $26K, ours was 2 years old when we bought it in 1999, their's was about 5 years old in 2005. Granted we could save some on gas, and my DH is constantly trying to get me to get a new car to save money on gas. But I see little point in spending $30K so I can save $50 a month on gas. I plan on running my Suburban into the ground and then picking up a smaller used SUV or a wagon of some sort (Honda, Toyota). But I still have 2-3 years before that happens with any luck.

I was there in the 70s but I remember what a GREAT time we had (a bunch of us) and how laid back it was.....bring lots of sunscreen/block as it's subtropical sun there as is S. Florida.....and for west coast of Florida, Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa, Clearwater

With digital TV, it's an all or nothing thing. If the signal is not good enough, you will not get anything, but if you have even a little bit of signal, you will get a clear picture. Where I live is probably 50 miles from the stations, and even though I got 80% of the channels before the switch, I now only get one with the converter box and the same rabbit ears I was using before the switch. I went to antennaweb.org and put in my address, and it showed that I need an outside antenna to bring in the signals consistently.

I live in the south and here a few miles south of Atlanta
it is around 14 this morning. I had to go out but layered clothes, put on socks for a change, headgear and even gloves and have a really good coat with hood but fur on the inside so I was cozy. Supposedly even colder tomorrow.

The antenna won't be obsolete, just the signal
a digital signal, but the older TV sets won't understand it and won't get a picture unless you buy a converter box. They're inexpensive, and they work like a charm! I do recommend getting a better antenna, though, if possible.
The local channels will be digital, too, if I'm not mistaken. The old analog channels are going to be used for something else.
Even though we the 'big switch' isn't 'til February 17, there are already many channels broadcasting in digital and HD already. Imagine my surprise, when my older, snowy-pictured, hand-me-down TV set that only got 3 fuzzy channels, suddenly got 8-10 crystal-clear channels! I was so amazed at the picture, I sat and stared at it for HOURS. I even watched GOLF... suddenly everything was beautiful!
The digital signal is a little strange, in that it's either on, or it's off. No fuzzy in-between, like before. So if something is in the way of the signal of one of your channels, like a mountain or a tall building, the signal may not come in, or else like me with the ABC network, I get it well during the day, not so well in the evening. Only thing I can figure is, since a live on a steep hill, maybe someone on the street above me is parking a car or a camper or something in a spot that makes my signal break up.
But I'm already so thrilled with the free, digital TV that's already out there, that I CAN'T WAIT 'til they make the switch, because there will probably be even more channels I can get.

They do now make them for 3-way lights. They are hard to find, but they are out there.

Christmas Lights
Did you know that Orthodox Christians around the world do not celebrate Christmas until January 7th? (We call it Nativity). We then keep our decorations up until Theophany, which is the baptism of Christ, which happens to be today. Just thought you might appreciate a view from a different angle.

I posted earlier about prelit trees. Ordered one from Home Depot because it was free shipping and delivered to my home since I have no way of getting a huge box home. I always got a skinny one - but this year everyone is gone but me so I figured it could take up the whole living room! It is stunning!
We don't do christmas lights. Instead we
do halloween decorations. We have more fun with that and it helps that halloween usually falls during a time when our energy bills are normally the lowest for the year.
I found the lights very helpful
I suffer from SAD to some degree no matter where I live, but I did not realize it until I started breeding birds as a hobby. I had a room with dozens of cages stacked together. On the two long walls, I vertically mounted two 6 foot uncovered natural lights and on the short walls I horizontally mounted two 3 foot of the same lights.
After I brought the birds their breakfast in the mornings, I would sit in the room for an hour to watch the birds' behavior. After about a year, I realized I was feeling better than I had ever felt in my life. Not only no depression, but my energy level was higher, my house stayed neater, I was better able to concentrate, I interacted better with people...
My work space is now located next to a sliding glass door and I keep the curtains pulled back all day every day. If you want to go look into the lights before you buy, a good source is in a pet shop in the lizard/snake/aquarium area where natural lights are sold in different strengths and shapes. They are NOT cheap, but the ones in pet shops last a long time and you should find something that would blend into your home. If you can't find them in the pet shop, look for a magazine like Bird Talk online and go to the merchandise/advertiser section for a distributor.
After all these years, the love lights are
burning stronger than ever.
Those low-mounted driving lights that - (sm)
illuminate both sides of the road are really helpful on dark country roads at night, and in the rain, too. They help me see puddles of deeper water, especially those along the side of the road that can get you spun around if just one front tire hits them. They're also good if you're watching for deer, pedestrians, etc.
I've learned a few tricks that help improve night driving vision:
First, if your windshield is pitted, replace it. The pits diffuse bright lights and make it hard to see.
Keep your headlights, tail-lights & turn-indicator lights clean so they'll be as bright as possible.
If I've been doing a long drive from daylight into night, especially if headed into the sunset, I'll wear sunglasses that are as dark as possible during bright daylight. Once the sun sets, I'll switch to more lightly tinted ones and wear them for as long as I can to help get my eyes better adjusted to the dark.
Once it's pretty dark, I usually take a break at a service station, and in addition to the slight rest I get from topping off the tank, I also take that opportunity to get my windshield as clean as possible - inside and out.
Next I'll wipe off my driving glasses, and finally, use some "Clear Eyes" eye drops in my eyes.
Finally, a sort of "last resort" trick I use to improve my vision right after passing an oncoming car with very bright headlights is to close one eye for a few seconds as the on coming car is within a certain distance. That way the iris in that eye doesn't have to readjust as much as the one that was blinded by the oncoming headlights.
All of those things make driving at night a little easier.
Anyone not putting up Christmas lights?
I usually make a big to-do out of having the house and yard lit up, but this year I don't think I'm going to. The few hours they are on a night sure packs a punch on the electric bill. How bout everyone else?

Sorry if this may seem really dumb but I've never done this before - how do you attach the lights to siding on a house around windows and doors? It's not wood siding, it's an older home with aluminum siding.
Christmas lights and decorations up after New Year's!
We always take ours down New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. Our neighbors still have theirs out (lawn decorations and everything) and up until just a week ago they were still turning them on at night! Ugh! It also bugs me when people leave the Christmas lights on their houses year-round. I love the holidays and I love having my Christmas stuff out, but when the holidays are over, so are my decorations!

and instead of doing the trick-or-treat thing, am going on a Halloween night costumed inline skate through the streets of S.F. with my skate-buddies. Most likely WE will eat the candy I originally bought! ;)

then out to dinner, home around 10, 1 daughter had a friend sleeping over so they watched The Grinch who stole Christmas (Jim Carrey), my other daughter and I watched the old (first) version of The Posiedan Adventure until 12 or so then went to bed. DH went to bed about 11 and slept through. Okay evening for the most part. No hangover.....haven't done that for years.
