Our take on it

is that if someone comes into the church looking for help, you give it if you can. Too many times people get "lost in the channels" so to speak when you refer them off.
We had a guy come in not too long ago during the middle of a service. He was very ragged looking and said that he didn't have any food to feed his family and wanted to know if we could donate some money. One of my youth kids said that he had drug problems in the past (the guy) so instead of just giving him money and thereby enabling him, a couple men from our church took him to the grocery store and bought him a couple weeks worth of groceries.
And yes, sometimes you do get taken advantage of, but we figure even if we do, God will use it. If someone comes and needs help, no matter what, we are going to give it. Now if someone was chronically needing help like every week then we would try to get them with the right people who could help them get on their feet so they wouldn't constantly need help.
I don't blame you, but God does command us to care for the needy. He doesn't tell us to just refer them off. God will bless what you do, even if the world takes advantage of your humbleness and hospitality.
