Oh, I think the two can go together, it just

is unfortunate that so many pit-owners AREN'T responsible. Like the guy up my street. Nice enough guy, (I think it's his GF's dog, so thank goodness it's not a permanent resident). But they don't quite understand that:
- Just because your dog likes YOU, doesn't mean it's going to like EVERYBODY.
- The reputation of the animals works against them, as well. People who are normally relaxed around dogs, may be a little uptight around a pitbull, and animals sense those things.
- ALL dogs can bite, for various reasons. I read somewhere that the breed that has bitten the most people is the cocker spaniel! Yet the cocker's jaws don't have the force per square-inch that a pit, bred for tearing up other dogs, has. So when they bite, they bite harder.
- Their toughness and tenacity are a good thing if you're into dog-fighting, but quite the opposite it you happen to have a pittie clamped onto your leg.
Owners need to be aware of these things, and have to go above and beyond the normal precautions a regular dog-owner would take. If your poodle or weimaraner escapes, most likely not much will happen. (As long as it doesn't get attacked by a pitbull!) But if your pit escapes, even if it doesn't bite anyone, all it does is corner someone and make aggressive charges at them, most likely if it doesn't end up at the SPCA, someone's going to file a complaint against it. THEN, if it does bite someone someday, you may not get it back.
