Make a fuss to school board, principal, teachers, dept. of child welfare (sm)
whoever you need to. I understand these are difficult to get rid of but obviously the mom of that little girl is not getting rid of them, maybe she treats the child but if you don't clean up the environment reinfestation is a sure thing.
We got a letter from the school yesterday stating there is a lice outbreak in the school. Then we had a program last night in which all the 3rd graders put on these little capes (that came out of a community bag where they had used them before at practice and then bagged them back up) They of course went over their heads and rested on their shoulders. I wasn't the only person that sucked in air when they saw this last night.
I am sure that poor child is and will be embarrassed about this and probably other things in the future if her health/hygiene issues are not being taken care of properly.
Do you mean the actual hours of school. or also time spent
ol
Sorry about that "work on them" part - should have been

But thier actual hours are much more than just the hours

Call the school. I had a threat like this in my high school and they cancelled school that day.
Thankfully, because the person making the threats was found with material for home made pipe bombs and quit a bit of ammunition and a shotgun. He was arrested and charged. Never allowed back in the school.
I think it would be safer to call the school and get classes cancelled for a day to investigate versus make a scene in the parking lot, especially if the student with the knife is inside with the knife.
Good luck. If nothing happens, pull your child out of school for a week. See what happens. I know that sounds horrible, but small towns is where this happens most often.
Teachers........sm
I understand the feelings about some teachers and the views that they get a good deal for doing nothing. When my children were in school, they had good teachers and some just downright horrible teachers that should never be teaching children. I think it depends on where you live also. They grew up for the most part in Florida and the community we were in had great schools.
Because of my husband's job, we moved to an area where the schools were less than desireable, but my kids were in advanced placement classes, which meant they were getting a better deal. I did see how this local system was dumbing down kids because a lot of them just come from homes where parents just plain ole don't care. Many problems, and they TOO think it's all the teacher's fault if their kids aren't passing. Strange that they never feel it is their responsibility to see their child is passing, but then again, so many of them are used to getting freebies and everything given to them without working for it, it never phases them they are actually supposed to raise their own child and not the school system.
That being said, my daughter now teaches in that system and I have to say, she has made a difference that is amazing. The testing scores (which personally she hates all the standardized testing but is forced to do by your government) have gone up tremendously with her classes, the highest in the school. Yes, she DOES WORK MORE than 8 hours a day. She has to be there at 7 and can't leave until 4:30....last time I checked that was 9-1/2 hour days. She has to eat with her children, and any "break" she gets is spent tutoring children to catch up or doing endless paperwork for the No Child Left Behind garbage. Her children truly love her and it shows. She worries endlessly about them, knowing so many of them go home where the parents aren't there, they work nights shifts, the children are alone all night. They don't eat dinner..many of them have only one meal and that's the one at school. She takes food to school and sticks it in their backpacks to take home because their lazy parents could care less and many are not even there at night. Some go home on Friday and don't eat again until Monday at school.
Don't blame the teachers for low performance at school. Teachers cannot MAKE lousy parents into good caring parents, they can't make the parents stop bar hopping and slutty mothers stop bringing home a different man every night and the kids see this trash. Teachers can't make the parents see that the children do their homework. They're not allowed to tell the parents to grow up and raise their child and stop acting like children themselves. Some of the kids come back to the school after hours to sit with her in the classroom because they dread going home because no one is there and they are scared. No doubt, there are a few bad apples when it comes to teachers, but there are WORSE parents who are responsible for the lack of their child's performance in the school system.
No one could pay me enough to put up with the trash she has to put up with every day. And to boot, at this school she has a joke of a principal who DOES GET A BONUS, not the teachers. And where is this 4% raise every year. She isn't getting it. She does not get this glorious paycheck you refer to and during the summer, she is tutoring kids to keep them from failing their grades against all odds. She spends her own money and does without herself, to buy things for the children they should have but don't. I personally have bought shoes and things their parents should get off their butts and get their children. These mothers seem to be able to afford expensive hairdos and fingernails, but can't afford shoes for their kids? The fathers....well, who knows where in the h*** they're at.....producing more babies I'm sure. When parents grow up and realize their responsibility to their children, then maybe the school can get better. Teachers are not supposed to be their parents, but many feel they have to be.
of course, most teachers would give a different
story, just as most MTs will tell you that they don't make enough to survive or they are living near poverty, but that's not really true either. Most people would say the same thing about any profession they choose.
And I thought gym teachers were mean
when I was in school! Argh! I'd be furious too.
Teachers from Hogwarts?
A ghost and a ghost buster?
(I'm looking at a flier from a costume shop).
They have a $70 Davy Jones costume that's unbelievable.
They also have male and female Spartan cheerleader costumes. Does your hubby look anything like Will Ferrell? Those are each $30 though. They have a Dickk Cheney mask. If your DH has hunting clothes he'd be set. You could go as a gunshot victim.
(Mr. Cheney's first name is a dirty word on this board - how funny).
Remember teachers can
make all the difference in a child's ability to learn. If the teacher is not good at actually teaching (which many are not!), you might want to see if there is another teacher to choose from.
If the &*%& government would let teachers...
and heck, even students arm themselves, we wouldn't be sending lambs to the slaughter like that. They would've at least had a fighting chance. If I'm going to die, give me the chance to die while fighting to protect myself and others. Why should the criminals be the only ones who can arm themselves? This is a very heated topic 'round these parts where it seems they want to take our right to protect ourselves away at every corner.
Didn't one of our fellow MTs on this board here have a daughter who got into some serious doo-doo at her school for having pepper spray on her keychain? Explain to me how THAT makes sense to punish a kid, or parent, for wanting to give them a fighting chance and protecting themselves.
Honestly, I think teachers should
refer to students, no matter how old they are, by their first name, always.
Just to avoid misundertandings, like this one!
But teachers often have to use own money to pay for supplies
ujk
Most teachers have at least one planning period when they
can grade papers. If their job requires work-related hours away from school, they are given comp time.
underpaid teachers - what a joke!
I agree that teachers have all this extra work they have to do in their own time, but don't forget about all the paid time off they demanded; spring break, Christmas break, plus the fact that they get most of the summertime off with pay. I think that more than makes up for the extra time they have to put in while school is in session. I have a friend who is in the highest paying school district in Ohio and upon retirement, he and his wife will both be making 80K plus on their pensions. What's so god awful about that!!!!! Winning 10K may not be so great either by the time they pay taxes on it and add it to their income, possibly kicking them into a higher tax bracket. That can be considered a good or bad winning.
Yes, compliments and gifts are the better way, especially with teachers!..
Also, I think your child will not want that you pick a fight with his/her teacher.
Some very dedicated teachers and low paid...
like firemen, police, military who risk their lives for really low pay unlike people with extreme salaries like sports or movie stars.
My sister and her husband are both teachers in Atlanta and -
The word is that many teachers will pass kids out of their current grade just to get rid of them. They tell me the biggest fear of the teachers is to have to teach the same problem child twice! They also say that some parents INSIST that their child be passed no matter what. So sad because it is the children who suffer!
Agree. Teachers of future generations should be better

It is NOT the teachers place to tell a child that Santa doesn't
yeah I just might sue as well!
Sounds like my kids...on a school day "we just got home from school!" on a vacation day....sm
But this is our vacation! My husband takes vacation days and leaves town without us...lol! He would never dream of taking a day off to work around the house!
How is the school's fault if Johnny comes to school armed?
And how is the school's fault if off campus people are getting jumped? Everybody wants to blame the schools, but the reason places have gone "zero tolerance" is because every parent whose kid gets popped for an illegal weapon says, "Oh, my little pookie wouldn't do that." Which is exactly what the parents of every perpetrator of school violence has said. At 15, this girl should have been aware that it was verboten and, if they felt that strongly it was necessary, kept it hidden. If she is not capable of thinking that part through, maybe she shouldn't be trusted with pepper spray anyway.
How is this kid in school with chronic infestation? School nurse

First, that's a lot of hours!! (sm)
That's probably a big part of your problem is that you are working so many hours. But I have a great chair that I bought about 8 years ago when I was having shoulder pain from transcribing. I searched until I found one where the arms would raise up high enough so that I could rest my elbows on the chair arms while I work and that supported my shoulders.
I need about 10 hours!!!
LOL.
Really though, I don't feel all there if I don't get 7-8 hours of sleep, but maybe that is because I am accustomed to it, but also that "8 hours" is interrupted by being awoken by the man in my bed that breathes too loud! (i now sleep with ear plugs), plus I have to get up and pee like twice a night...
You raise an interesting point if you can gradually get used to sleeping less... think of all the things I could get done! But it never fails, I have been going to bed around 11, waking up around 6 (interrupted during the night) and without fail I get sooooo sleepy at about 1-2 p.m. Could that be because I have to sit and stare and type all day??
Dont know but I like this post!
I'm tired now :)
150 hours and then you still have to have

You can put up with just about anything for a few hours! sm
Does he realize how much it means to you that he and you spend Thanksgiving together? I would pull out all the stops here. Tell him it is just for a few hours, can he not put up with them for a few hours out of an entire year? He might also like some reassurance you are not going to let your sister cuss him out again and get away with it (if that is what happened last time). I really would emphasize how much you want him to go to be with you if nothing else. Then if all else fails, yes I am saying this, use the crying card. I am pulling for you!!!
About three hours ago!!! sm
I was walking down the hallway here at the hospital where I work. It is linoleum flooring and I have pumps on. I was heading down to the radiology department to talk to the doc about something and probably going a little too fast. I was turning the corner in the hallway and my heel just slipped right out from underneath my feet! I was mortified. But, you know what makes the story even better?...today is laundry day and all I had to wear to work today was a DRESS!!!!!!. So, I'm sitting on my rump in the middle of a busy hospital hallway trying to cover up my tush before the ENTIRE hospital saw it.
So, in conclusion I guess you could say that:
1. I will not be wearing a skirt or dress again to work any time soon.
and
2. I probably need to slow down on the corners!!!
LOL
Just got back from HOURS in the ER.
I don't understand why ER visits take so long. There were only two of us in there and we came in together. I was there for 3 1/2 hours.
Anyhoo, after my doctor stopped laughing, I was diagnosed with a flu-like viral illness, second degree ankle sprain, an award winning black eye and dehydration. I do normally have lower blood pressure around 100-110/49-70 and it was about 98/49 when he first saw me. He thinks I was just super talented and passed out from the stomach pain/nausea and sitting on the pot. I have an Aircast to wear for the next few weeks and told to just take it easy. He was more concerned about the chronic nausea I've had since my gallbladder surgery last year, but I think my body just misses all that lovely bile it produced.
So for now I'm pushing fluids and taking it easy.
Or maybe they could wait a few hours
before coming to the board where they very well know the east coasters want to be talking about it.
Yes, but after work hours is the same (nm)

P.S. - I was lucky, only out about 26 hours
and no trees down in my yard.
It's within a few hours of Las Vegas I believe
and 35 years ago when I lived in Vegas - Pahrump was a very, very small town - probably just a dot on the map - maybe not even a stop light - think I heard recently on some travel show that it had grown - but then again most all Nevada towns lately have.
3 p.m. I am so Hungry! 3 more hours
and I start the prep...Rite Aid Oral Saline AKA Fleets PhosphO-Soda AT 6 p.m. Ugghh. My DH's time is near as well. Just as well, I am throwing up everything I try to eat as my GERD symptoms and esophageal stricture is acting up. Think I will just get in my jammies and jump in bed.
4 hours of commuting
Sorry, but I think you are being a wee bit selfish. Your husband is commuting 4 hours a day, 20 hours a week. That is like having a part time job. But you don't want him gone a few nights a week because you will miss him? Give the guy a break. It is only for a few months. Like they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Okay, I'll do two hours
So the tougher the cuts the less time you marinate?
I would be happy with 6 hours a day...sm
Be glad you have work which I am sure you are. I know I need to look for another job. But it isn't easy in these times.
Calcium - take 2-4 every few hours. nm
nm
Actually, the first visit was 4 hours.
The next two were 2 hours each, if that matters.
Long Hours
I think you need to send your kids to your parents house for a overnight visit and have a long talk with your husband. A marriage is a two-way street, you may have run up the credit cards but he is the one getting laid off. True it is through no fault of his own but for him to put it all off on you and declare himself retired at 50 with two young children to raise leaving the burden of all the bills up to you is just plain wrong. Excuse me for saying this but you sound like you are afraid to approch him to talk about this, is there another reason that you are afraid to talk to him about it, besides the usual...I don't want to start a fight? How convenient for him, you keep your mouth shut, work even harder than you do now, support the family and he will watch TV while you do it. That just isn't how a marriage is supposed to work and is that what you want your kids to see as an example, the bottom falls out and Dad reacts by shutting down and watching TV?
Approximately 2 hours or so
I agree with the above poster. It's usually a ratio of 4 hours typing for 1 hour of dictation. It does vary, though for each individual.
I lose focus after a few hours : (

Tell you how I worked excessive hours
I did the same way as you for several years. I went to work at 5, got off at 1, took a short nap and then went back to work at 5 and worked until 10. This was 5 days a week and then worked the 5-10 on the weekends at least 1 day if not the second also. This nap was probably what kept me going for all those years I worked like that. By the way, only work part now and so happy finally able to get past all those hours.

I work about 10 hours a day with very little time off. nm

In VA about 2 hours from the coast, after the last hurricane - sm
in 2003 (also due to 9-11 though) ours jumped from $400 to 650; which compared to those of you in FL is nothing obviously but at the time it seemed quite large. Our car insurance is still quite low though about $400 a year for each of our 2 trucks.
Had to leave mine outside for a few hours
I kept wondering why sellers on ebay would put 'from a smoke-free home' on their ads. I eventually found out why! The smoke smell from the book was driving my cats crazy so I finally put it on the table on the porch outside and let it air out for a few hours.
But they can say I need xx reports/lines in 24 hours.

My mom is 8 hours away - but they happily stay with her (sm)
When I go visit my family, my kids stay with my mother while I go and visit other friends, etc. The difference might be that they have cousins there to play with and my mother jokes and plays with them and is affectionate. In-laws are not that way. No kids around my in-laws. I really don't know exactly why they think it is so horrible. I have asked them. They just say that they are bored, grandma is strict, she won't make any adaptations to things she cooks and makes them eat whatever she makes, she takes them to all-adult functions and makes them sit through things. They also have a farm and sometimes make the kids work very hard digging potatoes or whatever they are doing at the time.
A pup should not be expected to "hold it" for 8 hours
