Abdominal hysterectomy at age of 46 mainly for monster fibroids. Hindsight is 20/20 and I wish I had done it sooner because my life revolved around 'that time'. Every 30 min. I was in the bathroom. Had to set the alarm in the middle of the night to avoid a major accident. I was so anemic I could not function for 2-3 days and would constantly nap. Iron pills couldn't keep up.
I was in the hospital for two nights, typed for 4 hours five days after the actual surgery. Had to use many pillows behind my back and sit in a nearly reclining position, but I could still type OK. Seven days after surgery I was back working full-time, but mind you, my job was flexible with no set hours, so I could break the day up hourly, nap when needed, etc. It was harder recovering mentally than physically because my brain said "go vacuum!" but my body said "you will lie here like a potato and watch your mother vacuum".
Check out a site called Hystersisters. Great for information as well as for forums much like this site where you can ask anything you want.
It's scary electing to have a major surgery and there are so many 'what ifs'. If the quality of your life is diminished because of your fibroids, it's time to do something because you don't have to live like that.
Good luck in your decision!
