My husband has a kennel full of beagles...sm

Posted By: blondie on 2008-02-27
In Reply to: Am I being shallow? Can't stand the man I am married to (sm) - Just me MT

He rabbit hunts with them and loves it. Before rabbit season went out which I think it just did he was hunting rabits with the beagles all the time. I think he enjoys the dogs hunting and watching them more than actually wanting rabbits. My husband has said he will never move to a subdivision either because he wants to be in the country where he can have his privacy and dogs and all but that doesn't bother me. I am fine living in the country. I couldn't take the keeping pigenos in a cage just to kill them. I would not like that. Now my husband if he has been hunting does tick checks on himself before he gets a shower. That is gross to just leave them until you are ready to pluck them off. I couldn't handle the junk either in the yard. My husband would have our yard looking like no telling what if I would allow it but I just stay on his you know what and I keep it looking pretty good. If he leaves a mess and doesn't clean it up in due time I have to do it because I don't want my yard looking like junky.
Now when it comes to being mean to the dogs and mistreating them there is no faster way to just make me mad as a firecracker. If someone makes the mistake of mistreating a dog in front of me I will go of. I don't think I would be able to restrain myself. I might have to actually become violent. That is just the way I am. I love animals and especially dogs. My husband doesn't mistreat his dogs. But he knows if he ever did he would pay dearly. I do not tolerate cruelty to animals. Animals many times can't defend themselves but I can.

Pantry full and freezer full...but will NEVER eat Spam!
//
Pantry full, 2 freezers full.

Only need to get paper products and fish. I have lots of tuna, Spam, canned chicken, sardines, corned beef hash, etc.

Got our veggie seeds last week.

Stocking up on more canned veggies and fresh veggies, mostly potatoes, as soon as I can. Potaoes last quite a while in our cold room, which is an extra bedroom with no heat. Also want to get extra bread. Love homemake bread, but DH doesn't like it for sandwiches, so I have to get store-bought bread for that. I can still buy bread at my local produce store at 2 for $1.75 and it freezes very well. In spring, it used to cost 2 for $1.25, but that's still cheaper than other places.

I'm not doing this because of what's coming. I'm doing it because I've done it for years, but usually in the fall. This fall I could only buy a few things at a time because DH not working, so I figure another month, I'll be back to normal.

Oh, I love beagles! sm
I have always wanted one. They are so cute! The only reason I haven't gotten one is because we live in the country and I heard that they will wander far from home if not fenced in. I hope your beagle does well with the procedure. Just think of how happy she will be to see you tomorrow!
OK I have exp with raising beagles...sm
My husband has 10 hunting beagles in kennels. I do most of the taking care of them. I also have a pit bull and a beagle inside.

You are in a predicament. The dog definitely deserves and should be treated the best that can be provided. First of all, is she getting fed and all? Make sure she has food and water. Look on the internet and look at the pics of dogs with sarcoptic mange. Just a few months ago one of our beagles got it and looked awful. She lost her hair and scratched and had bleeding spots on her from the scratching. Some just lose spots of hair. If it has this I can tell you how to get rid of it and make the dog look like a different dog. We treat our beagles a lot ourselves. If it has mange it would need ivermectin but the problem is if it has heartworms and you wouldn't know unless you take it to the vet to check then the ivermectin would kill it. The test to check is about $30. If it does not have the heartworms then you give it a shot of ivermectin 1/10 of a mL for every 10 pounds. Make sure not to overdose. You give it once a week for 4-5 weeks. It kills the mange and most everything else it might have. But you have to be very careful because an overdose is lethal. Also to help grow the hair back you put on NuStock which can be bought at a feedstore for around $12 a tube. It has instructions on it. THe ivermectin can be bought at the feedstore too. This is for cows. That is why you only give it a very small amount. It is 30 something dollars for a thing of it. This is how I cured my husbands beagle and it worked and the dog looks great. Regrew all the hair and is very healthy. But make sure it don't have heartworms first. And weigh it to see how much to give. This is a alternative to vet care and I am telling you it works.
Actually these beagles won't kill the ...sm
rabbit or do anything to it. They will only trail it and let you know where it is and if you want to kill the rabbits you can do it but the dogs won't touch it. BUT my husband just does it for sport. He doesn't kill the rabbits either. He just gets a kick out of watching the dogs get all worked up trailing the rabbit and if you have never heard a beagle on a rabbit trail. They howl and sing like you would not believe. But I am happy to say the beagles won't kill. I told my husband do not kill any rabbits and bring them here. And he doesn't. It is just a hobby. No killing or mauling takes place. We are animal friendly. :)
Beagles come in two sizes...
There are 13-inch Beagles and 15-inch Beagles. We had a 15-inch Beagle that weighed 65 pounds. He was solid as a rock, and the vet said that he never had seen such a large Beagle in all the years he has been a vet. We now have another 15-inch Beagle that weighs 45 pounds. If you want a small Beagle, get a 13-inch.
aren't beagles yappers?
Every beagle I've ever known was a howlin' hounddog. Really noisy.

In general I'd say dog size & volume are inversely proportional.
I'll be dipped...he can dip his own hunting beagles!..sm.

You've got a lot on your plate blondie....You have 2 children, not just one.  Hope all goes well with you.   Cat

may have kennel cough
I think kennel cough does eventually resolve but can be treated without much of expense - ask a vet.
I'm sure it's kennel cough (sm)
We adopted a dog from the local SPCA and he had it - they told us it spreads like wildfire among dogs who are confined.  They would have let us bring him there to be treated, but it was too far, so we just took him to our vet.  I don't know about a rescue group, but it seems to be that they should be responsible for it.  If they refuse, maybe a local vet will let you pay it off, but it must be treated.  It is otherwise known as Bordatella.  Good luck.  It is an awful-sounding cough, I know.
what the kennel thinks
When I was a kid a spoiled dog got "Gainsburger"

Now the kennel I take my dog to thinks my dog is spoiled because she gets raw chicken.

I think it is all brainwashing by "experts" and I adamantly disagree about vast improvements in our food industry for humans or animals.
If you are leaving for 3 weeks, take them to a kennel and sm
pay for daily care.  They need more than food and water, they need attention and loving and daily petting, and exercise.  Bless you for taking them on, but don't desert them now.
Could be kennel cough, heartworms.
He really should not go in for surgery until the reason for the cough is found and cleared up. If kennel cough, he will need antibiotics. If heartworms he would need a treatment that is a couple of hundred or so.
Any one ever deal with kennel cough in their dog? nm

We got a beautiful baby basset hound about three weeks ago. We took her because she was the last of 13 in her litter and had given up to die. She had quit eating and drinking at the pet store. When we went to see her she just lit up with my daughter and actually ate some food while we were there.  We brought her home because we couldnt bear thinking of her dying. We took her to the vet and she had failure to thrive, worms, and kennel cough. We have had her on two rounds of antibiotics, diazepam, worm medication, Pepcid, and Torbitrol. We had her to the emergency vet last weekend and she spent the night in ICU because of respiratory distress. I just took her back to our vet again today because she was up all night coughing and crying. She vomited 5 times this morning and has refused food since yesterday. The vet said she now has full blown pneumonia and the kennel cough has been a resistant type so we are now trying another antibiotic and more Torbitrol for the coughing. This poor baby has been through it. I am so glad we took her as the vet said she would have definitely died by now.

I was just wondering if anyone has dealt with kennel cough before? Thanks for any insite to this problem. She is such a sweet little dog. She just breaks my heart when I see her coughing and struggling for air.

My very first boxer as an adult had kennel
cough. I rescued her from a pet shop under similar circumstances. She had been there with her brother and her brother died. I refused to let her die in a pet store so brought her home took her to the vet and got her started on medication. The first month was rough, there were nights I just sat in bed and held her, she felt so miserable. She finally got through it and after that rocky start she lived to the age of 13.5 with not another medical problem the rest of her life.
Vari kennel crate if you can afford sm
Used this instead of wire, chew toys, water cup on front gate, they grow to love it as their "home" and you will wonder why you didn't buy one before, it more than pays for itself and you don't have to worry while away. I had several dogs who did hundreds of dollars worth of damage. I did not know about crating. Used sour apple spray for one dog, another like it! Talk to the pet supply store and look for ads, trainers buy crates up fast in the paper, I drove 100 mi. round trip for my Vari Kennel, plastic with wire front gate, not as ugly as the wire ones. If it's too big, put a cardboard separator until the dog gets bigger, then the bigger, the better they like it. They feel protected and actually want to go in there as time goes on. Good for when you have company who doesn't like animals as well. They also have fancier ones online that look like furniture but expensive.
I composed a song about the Westmister Kennel Club and put it on CD SM
and have written poems and want to submit them, just don't know where, as I see warnings not to submit them to many publishing companies. Any good ones I can trust?
Hubby puts plywood board up along the outer fencing and top of the kennel then he
straw inside the kennel and make a heavy straw bed in the back and our three dogs cuddle up there.  It works like a charm.  When it gets to be warmer weather he just takes the plywood down and puts it away.  It's an every year thing with us.
I know full well that I was able to...
say "no" to sex at 18 years old, and 17 and 16 and even before that. I knew what sex was and how babies are made. I dated older men and I held my ground. I do believe that all 16, 17 and 18-year-olds know exactly what they are getting into. I think the man is a creep and that he, because of his authority position, had an obligation to stay away from her, but I just can't see two consenting adults having sex as a crime. Inappropriate--absolutely.

You are full of information!
Thanks!

Do you remember when Nick went away to boarding school at something like 7 and came back 19? It's completely crazy but I know they have to do it to keep the story line going. I can't wait to see what he looks like though...Sharon or Nick. Michael's dad, I thought that was a dead issue. I wonder who decided to go ahead with finding him. Here we go with Gloria again huh. lol

I missed today but watched yesterday's online. I'm so glad Victoria got a chance to talk to Sabrina. I'm still hoping Sabrina doesn't kick the bucket but sounds like she will. I wonder how Adam will like step-mommy Niki moving into the ranch...I think that's where things are headed.
You are still full of rage.
Shut up, you say? Tell it to yourself and then, see professional help. A pastor would be a good place to start. Many of them dedicate their ministries beyond the pulpit to domestic violence and abuse. For those who do not feel at home in a church, they have many resources to sliding scale social services, often some of which are free of charge.
Because this is a board full of

professional people who strive to be as accurate as possible in what they do.  I just figured they'd want to know.  You never know when you're going to be called upon to type that next national security document that needs to reference a Navy SEAL and you'd want to be correct, wouldn't you?

Yes, now I'm being silly.

I'm just saying, she might not know the full story if
she wasn't around until the friend actually died.  Perhaps, they had marital problems before the diagnosis.  I'm not saying he is or isn't a scumbag, I'm just saying if you had no idea the woman's husband left her until after she had died and you were at the funeral, then you probably don't know much else about her personal life.
She already stated that the garage was full
and that they said they would take them instead. Sometimes you do things like that for family, ya know?

Also, she would most definitely say, "why did you store them near the street where you had other things stolen before and stored yours in a safe place?" That is negligence!

Since their quads were not stolen, only the ones right by the street, it is obvious they acted negligently. She stated that the only things stolen on the property were right near the street before. Why would someone put something that they are storing for someone in the same place? That is negligence.

I have no doubt she would probably tell the OP that they should have cleaned the garage and took care of their own quads, but legally, her sister is at fault.
Did you know you can watch the full episode on www.cbs.com?
Something new they started, pretty cool!
Better question to ask..... Do they get full at lunch? sm
My youngest who took those finally asked me 1 day to add a sandwich as those just did not fill her up. She is a very petite 8 year old who is very active. They are just not enough!! :)
Oh, and take one of those carriage rides for full

My daughter got full tuition

room and board and books paid to Stanford University. She had very good grades and we filled out the FAFSA. They gave a huge financial package to her becuase of our income, which is middle class, but so many people who go there have higher incomes that we qualified for quite a bit of aid. You should apply to whatever school you want to go to because you never know how much they will offer. She also has taken out the PLUS loan for the last 3 years, but the total will be less than half a year of tuition. She is a junior this year and we are so glad she didn't let financial worry keep her from applying to the university she dreamed about. Good luck.

not cute since Full House!
They are really thin.... I hate to admit - because I'm not really a fan of hers - but I think Angelina Jolie is really pretty. . . I've also always thought Julia Roberts was pretty, though not "beautiful".
Before this turns into a full blown....sm

back and forth free for all, you also don't know me personally to make assumptions about my personality. This has gotten old quickly, so I'll leave with these thoughts.

You expressed an opinion saying you were ill about her treatment which you thought was above and beyond.

I expressed an opinion, in turn, basically saying if you were in her situation you would want that same protection, considering it's very plausible that it's the obsessive fans and need to know that probably put her in this situation.

Opinions are opinions, facts are facts, and considering all the information any of us knows come from cutthroat reporters who are looking to make that big story, it would be rare if anyone knew any true story about a celeb.

I know if I were famous and hounded by people 24/7, and having a mental breakdown to boot, you can bet your bippy I'd do whatever in my power to make sure I had nobody around who could violate my privacy any more than it had already been violated.

As for the doctors getting suspended, if they weren't on her case, and it's not a teaching hospital, and if she has security, then it's for a reason, and they should have known better than to violate her privacy. Doctors can violate HIPAA just as easily as anyone else, and that's what they were doing, because it's also very possible that those same docs who just wanted a quick peek, probably couldn't keep it to themselves, or they wouldn't have been nosing in her business in the first place. They got less than they deserved.

Walk a mile in her shoes. Have sympathy and compassion in your heart for those who need it, which she obviously does!

Full blown celiac here sm

If I eat wheat or oatmeal (I can't have rye or barley either, but it usually isn't something I am exposed to) I feel like I can't breathe for a couple of hours, my belly bloats up, I start tooting like a banchi and then I can't leave the house until all diarrhea leaves me.  It is TMI, but celiac stools are yellow to chalky gray, even white, NOT normal and are extremely foul as well.

What this can do to you is make you anemic.  You can have malnutrition from never being able to absorb the good stuff in your food.  You might be either very thin or rather overweight, but you always feel horrible, no energy, tired.  Food never makes you feel better, no matter how hungry you are and how much/little you eat.

Celiac sprue is considered an autoimmune at this point.  The body can't digest the gluten (a type of protein) in wheat, barley or rye.  Oatmeal has gluten, but it is chemically different from the others mentioned here.  Some celiacs can eat it, some cannot; I cannot.  You can't eat any Quaker products because they are all severely cross contaminated and will make you sick.  What happens when you eat gluten all the time, is that the villi in the intestines flatten and/or fall off.  Their surfaces exchange nutrients from the gut into the body.  If they are not present or not functional, it dimishes absorption by 80%.  On the other hand, celiacs who go on a gut healing diet will have their villi return to a healthy state (about 90% of celiacs recover the lining of the gut).

If you have another AI, you have to know that celiac likes to piggyback with other AI disorders, particularly SLE and Sjorgen's.  Also, it is believed that 2/3 of celiacs are concurrently lactose intolerant and/or allergic to dairy.  It is estimated that in the US about 1:150 people is a celiac, whereas 1:4500 will be diagnosed during their lifetime.

Never fear, however...gone are the days of rice cakes and hard rice bread!  There are many many books on making gluten free bread with bean and alternative grain flours.  There is plenty on the internet too.  The best book I can recommend is "The Allergy Survival Guide" by Melina, Stepaniak and Aronson.  It is everything free...no animal products, eggs, dairy, nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, yeast, soy...and the recipes are DIVINE.

The best part is that since going on a GF diet last summer I rarely have a day when I am tired and feel crappy, as long as I behave.  I have lost about 40 lbs with no effort, unless you call eating fruit, veggies, soy and beans constantly in as large a quantity as I like, an effort. I have been able to add some GF desserts back into my diet and not gain weight.  I also have SLE and I am on 7.5 mg of prednisone every day (weaning to 5 mg).  Despite doing a 2-month loading dose of prednisone to get the SLE under control last summer, I dropped 18 lbs the first month on it and another 10 the next month and we all know what pred can do to your waistline.

I'll go and make my polenta crust pizza for supper and enjoy the fact that I won't feel sick after I eat and it will taste wonderful.

At this point I think he is full of hooey - sm
he is calm as can be and acting totally normal, humming about the house, etc. I am just sitting back and watching. He has lied in the past to me in order to make me act. Right now he wants me to get moving on my cc issue and either consolidate, do settlement with one of those companies, or declare bankruptcy and I am unsure what to do. He also wants me to start putting stuff on ebay which again I have not done and he is upset about that. So I think he is just playing games at this point, he can be very childish, he is also clinically depressed so that is no help to the issue as he won't get treatment. He had to re-sign and email in forms about drug and alcohol testing yesterday....not the sign of someone about to be laid-off I don't think. There are 2 other guys in the company I think would go before him as he has been a very valuable employee and gets the job done quickly and well....whereas these other 2 guys milk every job and cost the company more money, he also says in cheaper hotels when he travels and the other guys get $160/night rooms whereas he gets $80/night rooms. So they would be pretty dumb from a business standpoint to lay him off and keep these two others, one actually has a brain injury and cannot troubleshoot at all which is a big portion of his job. They have to tell him what the job is, then he can fix it, or give him just maintanance jobs to do. So for now I plan to sit back and watch for a few more days, the weekend will tell me if it is true or not. I can also call his manager and ask what if anything is going on. He will tell me (friend of the family as well). --as for the kids going to parents, too far away unfortunately, so not an option. I will ship them off to a neighbor for an hour or so to play over the weekend though and find out once and for all. Especially since we'd have to find out about unpaid vacation, any severence pay, his 401K....I plan to approach it on that note, ask him for the planned date of lay-off, etc. If I get no straight answers then I will know is really full of it. He'd be really ranting about it all if he was about to lose his job, then again he does surprise me every now and again. Thanks for the advice though.
I have one that says "his nose was full of snot."

I'm not kidding.  I'm told to type it verbatim and what he says is what he gets.

Eeeuuww.

Not using the entire bottle of something and just opening full ones! SM
I have quite a collection of shampoo bottles with about 3/4 inch in the bottom!! Makes me mad at myself!
Fake, but full-sized for the first time
in years.

With so many family members with terrible allergies to real trees (or the spray used on them), it's safer for me to have fake. Plus it might be less tempting to the boys to lift a leg on. We'll see.

Got some beautiful new furniture..but full of static. sm
Had the furniture delivered on New Years eve and we have all had the shocks since then. When you sit on it and move you can hear the static in the fabric. The poor dogs look like they got their tale stuck in a light socket!!! The fabric is a micro-suede in choclate brown. Any ideas on what to do to get rid of the static in it?? We have a dry/moisture gauge in our house and it is in the "comfort zone" so we are not dry right now. Help!!!!
This season has been full of twists and turns! sm
Boy, what a goon Eric is!!!  I think he is such an innocent young man.  To trust those women, good grief!  I believe he is the only person ever to give up immunity in all the seasons of the show.  It was bad enough when James got voted off with two idols in his pocket, but I think last night with Eric handing over his power to those girls was insane.  He was dominating the game, yet he allowed himself to be sucked in.  Amanda has played a cool game with her manipulation of various players.  I can see her winning.  I cannot say I care much for the other two girls as winners at this point, but we shall see.  I will definitely be watching on Sunday!
My life is full of love from my two children.....

No he is full blooded pit bull with papers...sm
But everyone thinks he has boxer in him. He has always looked like a boxer because of his color. Everybody thinks he is a boxer or boxer mix.
Whether full pit or mixed pit, loads of shelters will NOT
let them be adopted out. I was at a shelter the other day, lady came in wanting to retrieve a pit her daughter had taken from her home in a drug bust. The person was told could not let go, it was a pit and the woman said but it is not full and the answer was NO difference, mixed, full they are a danger to society and the people who would adopt know this. The shelter has sign on door (pits have green signs on their individual place) and the sign says no pure or mixed pits adopted out. Don’t you just think maybe these people who have had experience with the breed probably onto something? Naaaa, people just want to keep thinking otherwise. Your life, not mine.
No, I was working a full time job, came home, took
care of my kids, didn't go out, had no money to go out with.  I said I could have worked 2 jobs, but chose not to, rather chose to spend some time with my kids.
