Okay, I am about 8-10 weeks pregnant. My husband and I definitely don't want more children after this one. We weren't even trying for this one actually. We talked briefly about our options. Every thing that I have read leads me to wanting him to have a vasectomy. It is cheaper, less invasive, done under local anesthetic, and recovery is within 48 hours. Tubals are more expensive, requires an abdominal incision done under general anesthetic, and a weeks worth of recovery. However, I don't know that my husband is really wanting to go with the snip snip himself. I'm hoping the cost alone will talk him into getting it done versus me as it is 3-4 times cheaper than a tubal.
Does anyone else have any helpful tips on this? I wouldn't mind having the tubal but I really don't think being unable to lift things and having light activity for a week will really go well with a 5 y/o and a newborn to take care of. Plus...there are more risks with a tubal than there are a vasectomy. So any additional tips on this subject to try and convince my husband into undergoing the ole snip snip would be much appreciated. Help in deciding on career change...
Hi. I have decided to go back to school (starting tomorrow) and I had chosen accounting as my field of study. However, after looking online at many, many jobs, I see that the Associates Degree that I will receive is not really worth much more than the paper it is written on and will definitely not get me a job making anywhere near what I make now, so I would have to go to school 4 years to do anything with that degree.
The school also has a Medical Office Management degree that would only take me 7 quarters at most (not counting that I can probably exempt a lot of the classes, such as medical terminology, pharmacology, basic computers, document processing, etc.).
My question is, for those of you who still have connections in doctor's offices, are the doctors now really looking at education as a factor in hiring someone, or are they still working on the "worked my way up through the ranks" or "my friend who used to work in an office" or "my wife needs a job and I am going to make her manager" attitude? I managed an office years ago before I started transcription and I now know that I was terribly unqualified to do the job, but the doctor loved me as a lab technician and he thought I had a "take charge" attitude and put me in charge. Is that still how it works I guess is my question...
Question about vasectomy
Hello Ladies. Hope that it's okay to post this here.
I want my DH to have a Vasectomy. He hates needles and dr.'s so I am having a really hard time talking him into this. But he knows that no matter what happens to us (because we are young) that he will not want anymore children. Absolutly does not want anymore children. He is happy with the 2 he has (or will have).
I on the other hand do not want a tubal because god forbid something happen to us I would not mind having more children. I am happy with the two we have and am happy to have those 2 and no more, but I feel making that permenant on my end is silly just because I may want to have more children in the future god forbid something happen( hope that makes since).
So I went ahead and made my DH an appointment for a consultation. I have not told him yet that will be the fun part tonight when he gets home.
Anyway, I was hoping that you ladies could share some information if your DH's have gone in for the big snip.

My dear hubby had a vasectomy a while back....Got him home, got the ice packs, etc., set him on the couch to relax. Turned on the TV and the end of "The Price is Right" was on where Bob Barker pleads with the viewers "Have you're animals spayed or neutered." Well, I thought I was gonna bust a gut....I had to run outside to laugh. It's all in the timing.  Cat
My DH made an 11th hour decision for a vasectomy.
I was scheduled for a tubal, had all of my preop workup done, met with the anesthesiologist, etc. At 10:30 p.m. the night before my surgery, my husband told me that he'd rather have a vasectomy done than have me go through the surgery. So quite literally, at 11:00 p.m. I called my GYN to cancel the surgery. Since I was the first surgery of the next day, he laughed and thanked us for letting him sleep in a little longer. It's been more than 10 years, and at every checkup, the GYN and I still laugh about that.
My hubby has had no problems. He had the procedure done in the office, and we actually went to a function that evening and danced a few slow dances together. When any of his friends whine about how they wouldn't have a vasectomy done, my hubby berates them and calls them big babies.
Fibromyalgia versus the above MS
I know mine not as bad and really feel for the MS sufferer. I do not eat much sugar on a day to day basis, half teaspoon with first cup of coffee to get me started but not a real big protein eater either. I do not want to take a lot of ibuprofen if I can help although I did take 3 tablets upon waking this morning because of the sore all over feeling. Ibuprofen is really hard on your kidneys. I had pasta today that hubby fixed but will try on cutting back on the "whites." Is this something you heard or just something you tried? I am open to all suggestions what others have done to help their fibro. Again, thanks!
spanking versus ISS
Here is a quick question for all of you that think that the spanking from the school is okay and before any of you make any snap judgements, I was spanked as a child and when my children were smaller, they too were spanked(BY THEIR PARENTS)....Do you all realize that this school that uses these "swats" as punishment, would be on the phone immediately if they saw you or found out that you "swatted" that same child as punishment for deeds done wrong at home? Since nowadays they want to tell you what you can and cannot do as a parent to acutally parent your child( and then of course complain about said kids nowadays), that by alloing them to do something to your child that they would gladly report you for is quite ridiculous.
How long is this ISS. For five tardies..it sure as heck shouldn't be a whole day or even a half day..it should be something realistic. Yes, I do know what it is like to have to deal with school principals who are jerks, just remember that this is your child and not theirs and that it is your job to look out for them.
If you really feel that just to get this over with right now, you want to let them swat her, that is your choice but since she is so obviously not interested in ISS, I would definitely make sure that she and the school knows that this is a one time pass and yes, I too would either make her do some work around the house or take something away if only for the hassle.
Btw, five tardies in 4 or 5 months is really not that terrible IMO. That is about one a month. My goodness, we all assumed it was cause she talks anyone think that maybe the girl had to use the bathroom during her time of the month. I would also find out when she was tardy and how tardy. My son was given a tardy cause the bus was late getting him to school and I called and let them know that that is not acceptable in my book. They had given several kids on his bus tardies and after several phone calls and a check with the bus company, the tardies were removed. Yes, if my son had been chatting or something, I would not have bothered to call, I would have just remind him that tardiness of his own making is not acceptable.

LG versus Motorola
 If you had a choice between a Motorola cell phone or LG cell phone, which brand would you choose? I had an LG and a Motorola several years ago and I really liked them both. Everyone seems to prefer Motorola, although I hear a lot of complaints about battery life, etc. I only renew my contract every couple of years so I need to make sure I get one I really like. The one I have now is Samsung and I can't wait to trade it out. The Motorola Razr V9m seems nice, but expensive, even with rebates and discounts. If I know I'll like it, I wouldn't mind so much. Everyone used to rave about the Razr phones and I know one of them has been discontinued now so I have to wonder how great they really were.

Vista versus XP
Hi,
I am an MT looking to purchase a new computer, and it seems like unless you special order all the computers have Vista on them. How is Vista compared to XP? The companies I work for do support Vista, but I have heard more negative comments about Vista as opposed to good from people I know who use Vista who are not MTs. I am hoping that this will be a smooth transition for me as I am not that computer savvy.

Yep, me too. I had a tubal with my C-section 3-1/2 years ago. My monthly cramps are MUCH WORSE!!! My doc told me it was caused by blood backing up in to the tubes and having nowhere to go. (Gotta love my technical explinations, lol). I now have cramps that radiate around to my lower back and down both legs to my knees. No one warned me either! My doc said to take ibuprofen right before my cycle and every 4 hours throughout the week. This does nothing! I wish my hubby would have gotten "fixed" instead.

I do not advise a tubal for anyone.
I experienced very heavy flow and excruciating pain after my tubal (tubes were cauterized), and this lasted until menopause at age 55. From onset of menses until the tubal, my monthly cycle was never a problem. I changed OB/GYN, who said the painful cycles after tubal was because BCPs had kept that from occurring prior to tubal. I told him I was not on BCPs and had not been on them since I was about age 21. Of course, OB/GYN does not want to think tubal creates any problems.
My family physician (female) explained that, after a tubal, every month during ovulation the egg ruptured through the wall of the ovary into the abdominal cavity (and body absorbed the egg or eggs), which could create the severe pain during mid-cycle.
I took multiple Aleve during this time. I have a high pain threshold, but just prior to menopause I needed pain medication.
I strongly encouraged my daughter not to have a tubal after her 2nd C-section. Her OB/GYN was not too pleased with her decision. Her husband had a vasectomy a year later.
I had a tubal the day after
the delivery of our third child. My husband and I had discussed it and he didn't want to undergo the vas. He is deathly afraid of needles. After going through childbirth 3 times, I was kind of used to it. I honestly don't remember a single bit of pain following the tubal. I had it done laparoscopically and I was already on "light duty" because of the delivery. I was discharged the day after the tubal. I had a 5-yo and a 2-yo at home plus the newborn. My husband was able to take a week off to help me out, but he would have done that regardless of the tubal.
As for cost, my insurance covered either. I would suggest that your husband wait until after the birth of this child to have the vasectomy, the reason being that you may end up needing a C-section (though I hope not) and they can do the tubal then if you've already discussed it with your OB.
Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope your "surprise" brings you as much joy as mine does! We hadn't planned on our third one either, but I can't imagine life without him!

condos versus hotel
Hi, the only tip I really have is check out the rates of the condos on the beach for weekly rentals.
I know they are probably high for summer time, but they offer full kitchens and more amenities than hotels usually... and you can save a lot of money by making your own meals instead of eating out all the time. The end of the summer we got a really good rate at Emerald Isle in North Carolina... I know that's far from you, I'm not sure if FL is as cheap... but you could look at Myrtle Beach too. Just think you're going to be paying probably at least 100.00 a night in a hotel... depending on how many nights you are staying you may just want to look into the condo idea, and if you need any help once you figure out where you want to go I'd be happy to i LOVE doing that kinda stuff :) have fun and good idea to start saving early

Tubal Ligation
I had a tubal after my c-section when I had my second daughter 3 years ago. I was over 40 when I had my second child and I knew I didn't want another child since I was older so it wasn't really a problem for me. I will say though that it made recovering from the c-section a lot worse. Our best friend had a vasectomy and he had no problems at all.

suggest not going to an outpatient surgery center. When they did my tubal they found I had an ectopic pregnancy and had to yank the tube and ovary. I went home 2 hours later; if it had been done in the hospital they probably would have kept me overnight. Just something to think about. Had no problems afterwards. Was back to typing 2 or 3 days later and really did not notice a change in my periods. Good luck.
I had a tubal ligation
I had it done while I had my last c-section. Maybe it's easier when it's done by itself, but I had a lot of pain and it took me a long time to recover. My husband even said that if he knew what I would have to go through he wouldn't have wanted me to have it. But again, that was because I also had a c-section so don't let me scare you. I'm sure someone here had a tubal separate from anything else and can tell you exactly what they went through.

i had a c-section with my second baby and while he was in there i told him to do a tubal. he cut and cauterized my tubes. i haven't had any problems since, that's been almost 6 years ago. when i'm ovulating, i do have some pain on my left. i don't know if that's due to the tubal, but i don't regret getting it done. good luck!
I also had a tubal during a C-section
I healed up OK, but have very painful cramps every month ever since. Other people who have had tubals have told me its a very common experience - nobody mentioned it prior to my decision. I'm talking 10 years of such awful pain I could not work during my monthlies without serious pain killers - worked my way up through every strength of ibuprofen, scrips included, until finally was prescribed a psychotropic drug that turned me into a happy zombie that barely noticed the pain. Finally around the 11th year the pain has slacked off enough I can get by on 2 regular strength ibuprofen every 4 hours, as long as I'm very careful not to get much strenuous exercise during my period - that brings back flareups of mega-pain. I had no warning in advance this was a supposedly common result of a tubal so I wanted to warn you to ask around and talk to as many people as you can that have had tubals and see if debilitating cramps have been their experience. Good luck in whatever you decide.
I had a laparoscopic tubal at age 28.
The procedure itself was relatively painless. I took one Tylenol and that was it. No pain meds, nothing. The doctor did cut out at least an inch of fallopian tube and cauterized the ends to prevent regrowth of the tubes, but I still wonder about the chances of an ectopic pregnancy especially with ovulation pain mid month.
I have had problems since then with extreme PMS (PMDD?), heavy flow, cramping, mood swings, headaches, hot flashes with sweats, not being able to sleep for 1-2 nights before Aunt Flo arrives, and a bunch of other annoyances. In reading the post tubal syndrome websites, it seems to fit. I don't know how much of this is related to not taking birth control pills, getting older, gaining weight with a sedentary job, just regular PMS, or the actual tubal. I was also recently diagnosed with uterine fibroids.
I had never heard of the Essure procedure, but I personally wouldn't choose it. I just don't like the idea of having something "foreign" inside my body. What if it dislodged, what if the metal springy thingies were recalled, what about scarring?

And it was incredibly painful. It took me way longer to recuperate from having both of them done at the same time. After my husband saw how bad it was for me he had second thoughts about me having the tubal. Even months after I still had slight stabs of pain in the area.

Having been skinny once upon a time and now having more curves than a country mountain road, I have to say I like myself so much better now that I weigh more. It has been an experience, I tell you that much.

tubes tied versus Essure?
Anyone have either of these procedures done? My husband was supposed to have a vasectomy before my IUD "expired", that was 4 3/4 years ago and I have two more months until I have to have my IUD out. I want something permanent and was going to get my tubes tied/cut but then I found out about the Essure procedure. I'm still leaning towards the tubal but just wondering if anyone out there has any opinions. Thanks so much!

Is it just me or how many others out their would like to throttle Billy Mays. I am soooooo sick of him. He's loud, obnoxious, and I'm getting tired of him thrusting his arms out in front every other second. And please someone tell him to stop using the grecian formula. It looks very unnatural. I will never ever buy a product he advertises.
The shamwow guy though. Now he's very enjoyable to watch and I will probably buy anything he advertises. Just a nice switch from watching that obnoxious a$$ BM (gee his initials match what I want to have every time I see him).

I know...and I was off the pill for about 7 years before my tubal (sm)
so can't blame mine on that. In the 7 years since I had my tubal, I have had to have a hysteroscopy for a thickened uterine lining and multiple period problems, very heavy, very painful. Before I had always had fairly easy, very average periods which lasted only 4 days. Now they last 7. Sometimes they stop completely for a couple of days right in the middle and then start up again. I will probably end up having a hysterectomy because of the tubal.

My husband is a big baby. I was working full time at an insurance company. I had my surgery the day after Thanksgiving. I was home by 10 AM feeding the baby (not my husband) in the high chair because my husband had to run to the store for stuff we needed. Not a big deal. Didn't hurt, woke up from anesthesia quickly.

What I found scariest is the way doctors commonly try to blow off your symptoms - blame formerly being on the pill as being why it was never this bad before, or just act like you're being a big baby. Many women on those forums saying "thank god I read this - now I know I'm not crazy". I went to several doctors (male and female)about the pain and not ONE of them said it could be related to my tubal. They don't want to admit these side effects are common, and they don't want to admit they don't know what to do about it. They want us to just shut up and deal with it. Its shameful the way they sweep this under the rug, and the only way you find out its common is word of mouth. No such thing as "informed consent" when it comes to tubals! We need to spread the word! Like call Oprah or something!
Community living versus single-family dwelling
I was raised in a large single-family home, although it was on a cul-de-sac and there were no other girls my age in the neighborhhood. That was okay for me at the time because I was a tomboy (and because that was decades ago!). I didn't attend school with the kids on my street. I went to a private school where my mom was a teacher.
Now, I am raising my granddaughter in an apartment community (I was already in an apartment when she came to live with me). Because of my financial situation and the area in which I live and the schools I want her to attend, there is no possible way for me to purchase a home for the two of us. My own kids lived in a single-family neighborhood before my divorce, then lived in a mobile home (double-wide trailer...common in these parts of the woods).
I have so many conflicts about how children feel about the type of living arrangements they have, i.e., a _real house_ versus an apartment complex versus a mobile home community. Personally, I would rather rent an apartment and not be responsible for reparis, but that means a constant turnover of other kids for my GD to relate to, which is also the situation in an apartment complex. I don't want to buy a mobile home - which is what I qualify for grants, subsidies and low-interest loans in this area - so she can go to a better school. Would this cause her to be more shame in her personal relationships with other kids at school than a mobile home community??
I would rather live in a townhome or condo, but that won't happen for some years to come. Since I would be a first-time buyer, there are grants I would qualify for, just no financing because of the high cost of single-family homes and for TH/condos in the area where I want her to attend school.
Can anyone offer advice or experiences about growing up in a multi-family community such as an apartment complex...mobile homes (I know how my own kids felt about it now in hindsight)..versus a condo/townhome or single-family home? I have some time to try to put things together before she starts school, so I am trying to decide what the best course of action for her sake. If I decide to move, it will be to plant roots for the two of us for a long time, so I want to try to make the best decision possible.

I was in a really bad marriage and knew I wanted no more children in this relationship and so I spoke with my OB/gyn and her performed a tubal not removing any of the tube just cutting and cauterizing. In 2000 my hubbie and I married and he had no biological children so we had my tubal reversed at a cost of about $3000 and little or no discomfort. A couple of years later and some Clomid (because of my age) I gave birth to an almost ten pound baby boy and am planning on working on a little sister currently *~*~*weg*~*~*~
I had a tubal 10 months after my second child (11 years ago). The only real
"problem" I had was with the air left in my abdomen (it was a laparoscopic), I had sharp pain in my shoulder for a while, but other than that I have had no problems. Regarding Essure, I know they use coils in teh tubes, but don't know what the failure rate is. A friend of mine wanted that, but because she had endometriosis, she was not able to have it done.
Poster below said something about hormonal problems. I don't see how you could experience anything hormonal if your ovaries are left in. Tubal does not remove those. I still have "PMS" sometimes, but that is because my ovarires are still functioning.
Say a tubal ligation got rid of your eczema, wanna know how I got rid of mine?
Had severe eczema on my hands, thought once would lose my fingernails. I got divorced, the eczema went away and never returned. True story.

Very many people find there are side effects to a tubal. My worst problem since having one is horrible, debilitating cramps. Every.single.month! Sometimes they get so bad I can't work at all, and I have to baby myself during that time every month as the least amount of physical activity brings 'em on. I have been to numerous docs (who act as if I'm exaggerating the pain), had numerous prescriptions - they finally put me on a strong psychotropic drug (where you still feel the pain but you're so stoned you don't really care).
I had never heard of PTLS prior to my tubal and had no idea what I was in for. Docs don't give full disclosure, IMO, as to the risks. Please look into the numerous websites on it - the testimonials of people who all have identical symptoms should be enough. This can mess you up until menopause - and its completely unfair to take on a sentence of pain vs some guy's ego!

Nah, just kidding but I had a tubal at age 29 after my second child, knew definitely did not want another, had always said no children at all after 30 and that is what I did. Never had the first problem with it. I would not try to talk a guy into a vasectomy if he had any drawback to it because lots think it somehow takes menhood away and men can be such big babies to start with sometimes.

Slow-Mohs versus regular Mohs
I am a patient, not a doctor, but my understanding is this:
A regular Mohs procedure takes many hours but is finished the same day you start the procedure. The doctor cuts out the visible tumor, then makes either vertical or horizontal slices from what she has removed. Those slices are made into frozen slides (not literally frozen) and analyzed by the doctor while the patient waits in the office. This allows the doctor to "map" the tumor. If a part of a slide doesn't show a clear (tumor-free) margin, the patient is called back in to a little more tissue removed. Again, that tissue is made into frozen slides and the doctor looks for clear margins. The patient will keep being called back in to have more removed until all the slides show clear margins. This can take many hours, but once the margins are clear, the wound is closed and that is the end of it.
Slow-Mohs is when the wound is left open for a day or two (and up to a week) while the slides are analyzed. That is why it is called "slow" (the time you spend in the office on the first day of surgery should be about the same as if you had regular Mohs). The reason it takes so much longer to analyze the slow-Mohs slides is because the doctor uses paraffin-embedded slides instead of frozen slides. Paraffin-embedded slides are of much higher quality than frozen (my doctor said it's the difference between a huge HD TV and an old black and white TV with bunny-ear antennas).
For most of the malignant tumors treated by Mohs, frozen slides (and thus regular Mohs) is sufficient. But there are some types of tumors that have long, finger-like extensions (like roots) that are hard to see on frozen slides. If they are removed with regular Mohs than these roots could be missed and lead to a recurrance of the tumor. So that is when Slow-Mohs is usually used.
Sometimes Slow-Mohs is called Modified Mohs, but I have also heard Modified Mohs refer to a regular Mohs procedure with other variations. So if a doctor says they are going to do Modified Mohs, ask them exactly what they mean by that.
You should also ask if your doctor will be using vertical (bread-loafing) slices, or horizontal slices. I think vertical is the norm, but horizontal is better for tumors with irregular boarders.
Also, sometimes after doing regular Mohs with frozen slides, the doctor will take a final slice for paraffin-embedded slides to be analyzed just in case. This final paraffin-embedded slide isn't the same as Slow-Mohs. In the rare instance that the final slide comes back with a positive margin, the patient will be brought back in for another Mohs procedure, but usually regular Mohs is a one-day affair.
Overall, Mohs and Slow-Mohs are a great alternative to a wide surgical excision that could result in greater (and unnessesary) tissue loss. I think it is widely accepted for skin cancers, but more controvertial in other cancers like sarcomas.
I have a very rare sarcoma called Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) and while most of the literature I read says Mohs is at least equal to or better than wide excision (but with less tissue loss), I have seen 2 sarcoma specialists that are strongly opposed to Mohs for DFSP. However, their reasons are that vertical slices and frozen slides are inadequate for DFSP. However, it doesn't seem like they are aware of the horizontal slicing options and the ability to do paraffin-embedded slides in Slow-Mohs (and doctors don't respond well to any implication that there is something they don't know). So I am trying to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible...and I suggest you do the same if you have one of the more controversial tumors.

playing sports with a friend. After showering he comes downstairs naked and tries to start a conversation with me. My "office" is in the living room and he is standing in back of the couch so I can't see any private parts, just him without his shirt, but I can see enough to know he clearly is naked! I think he wants me to be amused or get turned on or something, but I'm not amused one bit. In fact, I keep working and basically ignore him.
Poor guy. I swear he thinks he's Vince Vaughn or something. I should at least smile at him but all I want to tell him is to put some clothes on! ugh!

Something about guys and their cars. I have no kids though and recently married so we still do some of our banking and bills separately by my choice. I thought he was being selfish too. So I got myself a 2nd part time job and I recently went out and bought a newer, bigger, fully loaded SUV and I don't let him use it! lol

and it is working, slowly but surely. After the first couple of things are paid off, its gets better and faster. We have a poster board with all our debt and we redo it every three months, and I must say that you see the debt going away. My hubbie cut all my credit cards up, and I was upset but in the scheme of things, it was the best. We only have one income and its working. Give it a try, I think you'll be surprised that it actually does work. My friend is also doing it, and their debt is disappearing also.
