My parents used to leave Animal Planet
on for their dog, but they said she became a couch potato and didn't like it when they turned it off so they stopped letting her watch it. I am not kidding!
On animal planet they were featuring types of SM

animals and snakes, etc. with two heads. I know in some cultuers these animals are felt to be holy and a gift from God. I felt sorry for them when I saw them.

I feel for this dear child and family.

My mother's cats love the Animal Planet!
She leaves it on, and her two cats sit there watching it. I thought she was just getting a little kooky when she told me, but it is true.
Did anyone watch any of the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet? SM

I watch it every year, but this year was particulary funny!   Such adorable breeds playing running, jumping on each other, etc. I laughed my head off. The little Westie was just darling, and the little Corgie pups were so sweet.

*tsk tsk - someday there may be NO planet for A/C...

Preserving planet earth
I've begun my own conservation program this week in honor of earth day.  I'm starting small...bought my first fluoroscent light and it's not too bad.  REplacing my kitchen cleaning products with things like baking soda, whie vinegar, lemon juice and club soda as well as borax. These can be used for various things around the kitchen/bathroom and are much cheaper than store-bought chemical things.  Not much but it makes me feel good that I'm doing my share little by little.  For simple ideas do a Google search.  There are plenty of sites that come up with simple suggestions that we can all do and benefit from.
A role model on what planet.
That's ridiculous.

When interviewing the "man on the street," our local channels seem to go out of their way to find unusually unsophistocated and uneducated people to interview, preferably looking like they haven't bathed in a month or seen a dentist in a quarter of a century.
Put my animal * up* ???

where would you suggest I put him????  He was an indoor cat but managed to escape.  Ate through 3 or 4 screens to get to the * wild *.  It was in his blood.  He was found in a field and I rescued him.

That's what some cats do.  They kill birds.  Period.

But you don't need to worry about the birds anymore, because the cat left one day and never returned.  He was completely white.  He left around Halloween and was never seen again.  My daughter worried for months and wrote a story about him to the local newspaper hoping to get him back.  Did not happen.

Maybe a bird ate him.  Would that make you feel better?

I am very sorry, being an animal lover, but
I really believe the final call on this had nothing to do with money. A horse, unlike cats or dogs, cannot support their weight only on 3 legs and I believe the people who owned this beautiful animal did everything they could to let him live. They knew he would never run again much less be able to live any kind of meaningful life. I heard he was not doing well yesterday and thought this would be the outcome. So sorry, though.
I said never again for taking in animal because
right after I had surgery, a Springer Spaniel came to my door. Loving animals I took him in, put flyers out in the neighborhood trying to find owner, called the pound to see if anyone declared missing, put ad in the paper under found animals, nothing-all the calls I got wanted him, did not lose him. I interviewed and hoped I chose the best- he was high energy and me low. It breaks my heart to see strays, feel so sorry and carry dog food in the back of my vehicle to feed in case I come across 1-I have before.
I am so, so sorry as I am an animal lover also
and can really feel your pain. I have 3 furkids of my own and my heart just goes out to you and your family at this time. These special animals are just part of our own families and I grieve with you.
You could probably win every stuffed animal at the
I bet you could whip them bad boys out instead of using the real gun that shoots the water and win the biggest stuffed animal EVER!  LOL
It depends what animal for me. (sm)
When DH sees something dead in the road, he always calls it a possum, no matter what it is. Cause I'm not a big fan of those (sorry possum lovers). To be funny he'll say masked possum (for a raccoon) or ring-tailed possum (also racoon), or gold possum (cat), bob-tailed possum (rabbit). He thinks he's hilarious.
No animal control

There is no animal control in many rural areas.

Don't know if Animal Control will be much help

At least, not if they're like the ones around here. I have called them a couple of times for large dogs roaming loose in the neighborhood and they said they would drive by when they got a chance but if the dogs weren't there at the time there was nothing they could do. Even when I told them, they're here right now and will probably be here a while, I never saw the Animal Control vehicle come by either time.

This is a different situation, of course, but if the dog is receiving food and water I really don't think Animal Control would do much.

I understand that you do not want to bring an animal into your home that would make your cat uncomfortable. If you can keep the dog company in his yard or bring him into your yard (as suggested below) that might be a good alternative.

Maybe you could keep an eye out and try to find out who is feeding the dog and talk to them about some kind of alternative, or at least find out when the owners will be back.

I can't believe people treat their pets this way, just to save a few dollars. For a dog as small as a Sheltie, boarding isn't all that expensive. I did a quick on-line check since it's been a while since we boarded our Pom, and most places listed $12/night for small dogs.  A small price to pay, in my opinion.

animal adoption

i agree that we needed to know about this.  there are some deceived and warped people that would sacrifice animals in evil ceremonies.  a relative of ours had a puppy turn up missing and later it was found with its heart cut out.  sick, sick, sick,

I got my dog from Animal Control.
There was an "application" but it was mostly common sense stuff. Good luck!
I am animal lover and get this
Spoke with my daughter last night. She owns her own home and rents out part of it. She tells me her roommate gone a lot- she intends to speak with him about his small dog. She tells me her dogs and this dog are not hitting it off too well but it is freezing here for the past 2 nights and the dog is outside without any shelter. I have written her a note and told her if she gets pis…oh well. I told her she is responsible for things that go on at her home and surely I gave her some compassion in her raising, otherwise I have failed miserably. I asked her how long does it take to bring the dog in, feed and crate it for the night? Surely as a human being you can not allow a poor defenseless animal to suffer because it belongs to your roommate. I am never confrontational- let her run her own business but I really hate this and if it puts a wedge between us then I guess it will have to. I keep my mouth closed but I could not this time. If it were my neighbor and they had small dog left outside, I would probably call the animal abuse people on them and someone there might do the same. I don’t worry so much about that as I do the abuse of a small animal. I asked her to find in her heart the right way to deal with this. I hope she is not as cold-hearted as she was last night.
Have some animal knowledge

To those of you speaking about how pits are so evil, I have two things to say...

1.  Any dog is capable of that behavior.  We have two dogs and one is a search and rescue dog and both are very loving... but you should never ever underestimate a dog no matter what.  they are still animals and they still respond according to their instincts in certain situations.  ALL ANIMALS have this capability.

That being said...

2.  So if you outlaw pits, who's next?  What animal species will be evil incarnate after that?

Basically, it all boils down to the owners, the training and the language the animal gives off in certain situations.

For example, my friend recently told me that someone she knows put their golden to sleep because it bit their child.  When they euthanized the dog, a technician made the incidental finding that one of the kids had shoved a pen into the dogs ear.  They came to the realization that this is why the dog had bitten, but no one ever even tried to sit down and figure out what had happened... nope, the dog is just put down.. no questions.  You know, I would have torn that kid in two myself if that had happened to me, so its the kid and not the dog.

Go to a dog language class, take some training and learn some things before condemning an animal to death for "instincts" that supposedly only that breed has.  Its ridiculous and completely ignorant.

OK all you animal lovers...

We have a Basset hound puppy, around 7-8 weeks old; we've had her a week now and she is going absolutely NOWHERE with her potty training.  We are trying to crate train her, but she just can't get the idea.  We take her out on a regular schedule, feed her on a regular schedule, and make sure she poopies and pees before she comes back in, but it never fails that she will, at least once a day, poopie in her crate...SO DISGUSTING! I'm at my wit's end and ready to give her up, but she's sooo adorable, I really don't want to.

Of note, I am not a huge animal person, can take them or leave them, but she stole my heart and I love her! I seriously am looking for some answers here.

Animal Control
I'm sure the responses vary depending on where you live, what the situation, and who you talk to but for those who have had no help from Animal Control - there might be hope. A farm in my area was obviously mistreating their cows, standing in water for days and weeks with nothing to graze on but plenty of land to move them too. Just a lazy farmer I think, the whole place was a mess. I called Animal Control, the Sherrif's Dept, and the Humane Society every week (atleast once a week) for over a month. Every time I had to leave a message and soon was immediately transferred to a voicemail. I am happy to say I was persistent and eventually the problem was solved. I can only assume they got tired of hearing from me. I haven't seen a problem over there since and its been a couple of years.
i have seen that before. I'm not an animal person

Animal Control
Like the other poster said, if you click "post a reply to this message" they are right under the box that you type your message in. Anyways, I forgot to tell you, you don't have to call Animal Control just if they are mean to the dog.  You can also call them about the barking, and I believe they will give them a warning and then I think a fine if they do nothing.  Also, I don't know where you are located, but usually you can call the city and they will usually warn them. As much as it sucks, I figure I am just "doing my time" here, where I live, waiting to get away from these idiots I call neighbors! They obviously don't care, have talked to them, so I don't want to make matters worse, because, unfortunately, I have to be here at least 4 more years!
All you CAT/animal lovers have to see this one. SM

it is short but so sweet.

Why are we okay with animal milk?
Funny how we think it is "normal" to drink the milk of an animal, don't you think?

Honestly, I would much rather find an animal hair in my food than a human hair though. :) I even get grossed out when it is my own hair!!
What kind of animal is a Nat? nm

animal lover
I would LOVE to be able to do that, or something similar. However, I barely make enough to pay for my own puds, much less any homeless ones. If I could, I would take in all the neighborhood strays, have them all neutered and whatever else they needed and give them a good home. Maybe one day I'll be able to do that. Until then, I'm so glad there are people like you !!
Animal attraction?

All right, I hope you all don't think I'm a sicko, but I have to admit something.  I am attracted to my daughter's boyfriend.  He is only 15.  He is 6 feet 2 inches and about 180 lbs.  No I am not in love with him or anything like that.  I just find him very physically appealing.  I dreamed about him last night.  Maybe it's pheromones.

I can only think of 2 other times in my life that I have had this intense physical attraction to someone, and both times it has hit me completely unexpectedly.  (I've not even felt it with my husband really.)  It never surrounds any suggestive conversation or even flirting, but I just feel an intense physical attraction.  It's not lust, though.  It's very different.

Don't worry y'all, I would never do anything stupid or immoral and even if I was the type of person who would, there is no opportunity for that.

Anybody else experience this type of attraction?  Am I describing a reaction to pheromones?

I do animal rescuing myself and what I know
is the shelters will not do anything to rehabilitate feral cats, just sending them to their death. If you do not get kittens very, very early and socializing them you have a problem on your hands when they are left out too long.
Animal control adoption

Oie.  We adopted a very sweet what we think is a lab/retriever approximately 3 years old from Animal control on Thursday.  I think she's way older than 3 and not healthy.  I finally got a good look in her mouth today and her teeth are a mess.  She hasn't eaten more than a handful of food since we got here and I couldn't figure out what the problem was.  I don't think she can eat solid food comfortably.  Also, she was coughing Thursday night.  Friday morning I made an appointment for the vet because I think she either has Kennel cough or pneumonia.  She is coughing until she throws up now and has done so more times than I can count. It is just huge globs of mucous.  She also has a nice itch issue going on.  I called Animal control and they say she wasn't coughing/puking/itching when they had her.  Maybe she's allergic to us. Has anyone had a dog with kennel cough?  Any ideas on making her more comfortable until her vet visit on Monday?  We are going to keep her and make her as healthy and happy as we can but I'm really annoyed that Animal Control didn't notice anything going on with her, especially her poor teeth.

Thanks for letting me vent.  I'm off to clean up the floor, again.

According the animal control worker..
We have one of the animal control worker's living across the street from us and she asked my son how Lily was doing tonight. He told her that she was coughing and she said that the dogs at Animal control all have kennel cough right now and to bring her out tomorrow for some medicine. I'm still just going to bring her to the vet because of her itching and all the mucous. I think I'll just go over to her house if I have any more questions about Lily.

Lily is probably stressed with all her new changes, but other than throwing up, itching and coughing, she seems to feel right at home. We bought her a big cushion for a bed and when I put the boys to bed at night, she goes to bed in her bed too. Anyhoo...thanks again for the support. I'll update after the vet tomorrow.
I work in animal rescue. sm

The best way is to run an ad in a newspaper. I always use the neighboring bigger city newspaper and have had wonderful success.  I also run what we call 'e-mail campaigns' with pictures and information, also with success.  ALWAYS ask for a reasonable fee.  Our adoptions are $90.  There are good people out there looking for older, settled dogs...just got to get the information to them.  If you do go this route please really listen when you are on the phone with them.  If they start talking about having wanted a young dog or puppy, they are not the right choice.  State in your ad the age and temperament.  Also, the prospective adopters come to my house and visit the animal first with the knowledge that it is a meeting only....to see if they like the dog and if the dog likes them.  Again, it has never been a problem.  Good luck.

Report this to animal control!
You need to file a report of both killings to the animal control officer.  My neighbor had 2 Akitas (aggressive like chows) who attacked and killed my cat.  Unfortunately my cat for some unknown mind boggling reason jumped over her fence into her fenced-in yard, BUT . . . these 2 dogs had also gotten loose a couple of times and attacked a woman getting her mail from her mailbox!  Vicious dogs are vicious dogs and this needs to be documented by you.  I feel so bad for your cats, but please don't let it happen to any other poor animals!
Zoo Question -Animal Babies

Why do they keep animal babies in the zoo nursery? Their mothers are in the zoo. It seemed so inhumane to have them alone in an isolette or crib with a warmer.~   :(

Calling Animal Rescue-sm
I only have a couple minutes here since I am working but will check responses later today. I did something today I never thought I would do, called the police and animal rescue on a dog owner. I've been kinda watching the family that owns this golden retriever not far from where I live as he gets tangled on bushes and cannot get out of the sun and today I went to untangle the poor thing from a bush and noticed he seemed very sick. I figured he was nearing heat stroke as he was panting very, very heavily, glazed eyes and unable to stand so I called the police and then called animal rescue. I think I may have been too late.  The police tell me he may not make it. They came with Animal Rescue, took pictures and took the dog with them. I'm just sick over it. We have a golden and he simply cannot take the heat at all. The breeder said for us to keep him in AC for the summer so we do. I plan to call Animal Rescue later to find out how he is. I wanted to take the dog myself from the house but figured I could get in trouble over it.  I think I did the right thing. The poor guy was just flopping around and could hardly hold up his head let alone stand up. I hope they get charged with animal neglect. It's a young family, work all day, couple of kids who hit the dog and they tie him out at 6 am and bring him in at 9 pm. No life for a dog.
What constitues animal abuse
I would like to know what you all think about this situation.  Our neighbor next door has been gone almost 12 days.  We just moved here so do not know them.  The day they left there was a little sheltie dog that found its way to our yard and all weekend long laid under their truck and on their front lawn and ours.  We gave it food and water, but it had no collar.  Couldn't bring ourselves to call authorities as the life span is not long for strays.  3 days later it was gone, we assumed its owner found her or she found her way home.  A few days ago we heard a dog crying and found her in the back yard of our neighbors who have been gone a long time but she is being given food and water.  She has just been alone for almost two weeks and crying from only what we can assume is loneliness.  Don't know our neighbors enough that when they return to say anything to them but I sure feel like giving them a piece of my mind.  If we didn't have a cat we would have taken her in.  It is so heartbreaking to think people don't think of their pets as anything more than a piece of property like an old shawl they don't know what to do with anymore.  Just want to know what people think about this.  I about cried myself to sleep last night thinking of how she must feel.
She is an animal. She does not "think" or feel like us.
sdf
Just reminds me of Animal Farm.

She got her at the Animal Shelter in Lancaster, PA SM
She is the most darling cat and so very beautiful!  She looks sooo much like the picture! Nina is very elegant. She is adored and lives in a lovely condo in Lancaster with my niece and her very number one fan, Nicole, my niece's 10-year-old daughter!  They have since gone back to the shelter about a year ago and adopted a male cat, Reuben. He is a pretty beige/rust color, has outgrown Nina by a mile and is just an absolute love!!  He refuses to drink out of his bowl, and when his aunt (me) babysat them this summer I spoiled them just a tad. Now my niece has to turn on the water in the kitchen sick for the kids to drink!!  LOL
You ever been to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
In Kanab Utah? Dying to go.
I am not saying it is okay to cage a wild animal
but these animals are not in little iron cages. They are living in open areas down in deep areas that have 15 to 20 foot walls. If there are going to be zoos, this is the kind to have.
And maybe I am shallow because its not just the animal cruelty (sm)
It is the entire lifestyle. I just can't stand it. It is just repulsive to me. I don't want to go watch him field test his dogs while they throw dead ducks for them. I can't stand suffering or needless death. I just hate it.
Need reassurance from animal lovers
Tell me I'm not crazy but my rental agent just called asking if I will be renewing my lease - I live in NJ and I pay 1300 a month.  Since MQ took everything away, I just skim by with bills now.  I had to say yes as my cat is 14 and is blind but in good health.  He went blind in this apt and at 14, I would hate to stress him so much as he knows this place so well.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to keep up with it.  Would anybody else do this for an animal?
What a beautiful animal. I have the collars of three of our s/m
dogs and I used to just hold them and smell them to keep them close to me. I understand how you are feeling and hope you are feeling better before too long. We never forget them and never stop loving them.
You should contact animal control
Leaving a dog tied up like that and barking incessantly is abuse for one thing. Surely there is some kind of animal control or even the police you could report to?
some advice about animal abuse

turn him in as soon as possible. People like that do not deserve animals.  Someone ought kick him once in awhile.

Call the Animal Protection Society in your area immediately.  I can't stand people who abuse animals and someone who knows this is being done and not doing anything about it is just as bad

Animal Rescue Organization

My son forwarded this message to me.  I checked it out and it is legitimate. All it takes is a click - no cost to you at all.  Let's help these animals!

Animal Rescue

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple...
Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is
having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their
quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected
animals.

It takes less than a minute (How about 20 seconds) to go to their site
and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals'
for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate
sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to
abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

They are Stauffer's animal crackers
delicious! actually they are very plain but i love them.

i haven't had life savers in forever... hmmmm
My cat loves the Animal Channel.
I swear she does. She is sitting on my desk watching someone fish, catching Marlin, as I am typing this. I have noticed with other Animal Channel episodes she will watch. There is now a bunny going across the street, then back again and she follows her head with the bunny running. No, I am not crazy. My kitty actually does this. Anyone else?
Ok, probably animal lovers might blow a gasket but
I have 3 cats. When I got the younger cats they were swimming in fleas. I would say they were maybe 6-8 months old. I visited the vet, got the medicine they have as in your posts and it just was not working. The cats were scratching themselves to death. While at the vet place 1 of the ladies told me if I got fleas in my carpet I could use Borax washing powder. A light went off in my head. I thought if I can use on the carpet, why not the cats? I was very careful about protecting their eyes but tried it and my golly, the fleas died almost instantly and they have not been bothered since then. They are now over 2 years old, brothers from the same litter. This was the most effective thing I had ever tried including all the flea remedies they have at the vets and pet stores.
