Looking for gift ideas for massage therapist and hairdresser -

Posted By: mtgal on 2006-10-28

I see the massage therapist every week (my treat to myself!) and the hairdresser about every 6 weeks for a cut.  I really want them to know how  important they are to my well-being, especially my massage therapist.  You all have the best ideas.  Thank you so much!

Thank you! Now, Gift ideas?
The 20th anniversary is China. We love Chinese take-out and actucally our dining room is done in a Chinese theme. I promise you it is not "over the top". It is so suttle we still need a few decorative pieces. I tought that whatever I give him, if it will fit, I would put it in a Chinese take-out container. He wouldn't understand it until I explained it, but would then really appreciate the sentiment.

Dad is retired, lives on 20 acres, has 2 horses, drives mom crazy, no hobbies.  Any ideas? - I did get him an electric windshield scraper which will come in handy as they do get snowed in where they are at.  Also thought about a food basket but those items are gone as soon as you eat them (duh! LOL) so any other ideas??
need gift ideas for my husband

He is SO hard to buy for.  I always buy him token clothes, which he needs, but would like to buy him something really special this year.  He doesn't wear jewelry or cologne.  He recently started wearing a watch, but he dug out his old one, so don't need that.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Any ideas for a coach's gift?

Soccer season is over in a month (U8) and I'm team mom so wanted to come up with a coach's gift.  I know there are the standard team plaques, etc but I'd really like to get him something different.  He's an awesome coach.  The other parents haven't really come up with any ideas but are willing to split the cost of something within reason.

Any ideas??

Housewarming gift ideas?
I know homes are personal so I'm not sure if anyone can help in a generic sort of sense, but I guess is there anything as a new homeowner you would have like to have gotten?

My sister just bought a house back home and since I currently live across the country and cant be there for her housewarming party I wanted to get her something that would be useful.

She has all her basics as she has lived in her own apartment before she bought the house...

Any ideas?

I hate getting her a gift certificate, even though that's what she said would be totally fine...
Need gift ideas quick for my sister-in-law!
She is a huge wine lover and drinks mostly red wine. I had ordered her a wine bottle cooler that cools the wine quickly, because I thought she drank white wine sometimes as well. I just found out from my brother that it is only rarely that she drinks white wine and that most of her friends drink red wine too so the wine bottle cooler may not come in handy for entertaining very often. The cooler is already en route to my house, so now I am trying to think of something else to get her. She is very connected with her Spanish heritage, and she has extremely good taste in home decorating. She has almost everything she needs already, but any ideas would be most appreciated! Thanks!
gift ideas for high tech men who have everything

Since you all have great volunteering ideas, I thought I'd pick your brains about what to give high tech men who have everything for Christmas.

2. Leash.
3. Flea collar.
4. Flea powder.
5. Puppy-friendly flea shampoo.
6. Grooming brush.
7. Spray-on coat conditioner. Some come with nice fragrance.
8. Vitamins. They come in liquid and gel forms, usually flavored. Would not recommend pills.
9. Smoked dog bones (I think they are made of cowhide) appropriate for puppy's mouth size.
10. Chewy treats for training. My Shadow loved the cheese and/or bacon flavors.
11. Dog blanket.
12. Food and water bowls.
Gift Ideas for a new police officer? sm

My nephew is graduating from the Police Acad. in a couple of weeks.  Does anyone have any ideas what would be a good gift?  I hate giving money. I did look on line and got some ideas but I thought I would ask to see if anyone has had experience with this.  TIA

Need $3-$5 gift ideas for junior high age kids

I know it's not much to spend, but I didn't make the rules about this gift exchange.  Need something that would work for boys and girls.  I was hoping to be a little more creative than Mickey D's certificates.  Thanks for the ideas.  It's greatly appreciated.  :>)

Looking for ideas for Mother's Day gift for a wonderful friend - sm
She is not my mother (she is old enough to be), but she is such a wonderful friend I wanted to let her know how special she is.  Is it even appropriate to give her a gift on Mother's Day if she is not my mother??  She is a very young and vibrant 65.  I know someone can help point me in the right direction!  Thank you so much!
Holiday Gift/Craft Ideas for Elem. Students

Hi.  I need ideas for kids to make gifts (minimal painting, minimal glueing) as they have to be ready to wrap.  What was your favorite keepsate gift from your child so far?

TIA

Any ideas on a gift for my daughter's 16th birthday?? I have been asking her for weeks and she -s

really hasn't given me any ideas.  She does not want a class ring now (she is a sophomore this year).  She does not like her birthstone but does like pearls and emeralds but has not really given me a straight answer as to whether she would prefer a ring, earrings or a necklace.  She plays a lot of sports so I am not sure she will be able to keep track of nice jewelry either and I really don't want to spend good $$ if she might lose it.  I only have a week left and wanted to get her something special because it is her 16th but just can't come up with anything nor can I get her to give me a good idea.  Thanks.

Hairdresser problem
I need opinions, please.  I have pretty heavy blonde highlights and go for a hair touch up last night (normally I just get hightlights and nothing else, no toners, etc. because it blends great with my hair).  I say I need a few more hightlights at my root to brighten it up a little, you know for the holidays and all.  This probably would have cost me around 40 and did the job.  Well, she starts telling me that the root is much darker than the rest ? Well, yeah, usually is. She said that I should do a *color* at the root that will be close to my natural hair color but brighten it up AND some lowlites that same color AND some highlights stating that this way it will be more blended. Okay..whatever you say. This was only my 2nd time with this girl and the last time she did a good job. So I go for it thinking she is the hairdresser, right?  Well she leaves it all on an hour and a half (apparently the lady before me who just came in for a cut ended up being talked into a whole new color too!)  Hmmm.  So, close to 2 hours later, the regrowth and lowlites are red and I see very little highlight or blonde!  Hello, doesn't *blend* at all and in fact my husband thought I went auburn!  Of course with the salon lighting you really can't tell until you get home and see it in different lighting. I normally have neutral blonde hair but now with these very noticeable streaks and roots of strawberry blonde. The kicker is it cost me 135 because it was a double process.  So my question is, do you think they sometimes do things just to up the price so they make more money even if they know it is not the best thing to do? I know in my heart if she did what I asked it would have been fine. I am going back today for a *toner* to cut some of the red but I am really MAD because I know now it will appear darker overall which sort of defeats the whole reason I went in the first place! Not to mention what all these processes are doing to my hair.  What do I say/do?  I know what I'd like to do but I'm pretty sure that I'd end up in jail. Thanks for any advice/opinions.
Nick the hairdresser on
What Not To Wear has curly hair. He has lots of tips when somebody with curly hair is on. He uses certain products afterward to let it curl, but smoothly and in an organized fashion.

With the wide-toothed comb, look for one where the teeth are rounded or even sort of squared off (in a rounded sort of way). That makes it more comfy when you get close to the scalp.

I do have one area at the nape of my neck where my fine hair tangles terribly.
I have gotten so good at it that I don't want a hairdresser (sm)
to color my hair. I am never happy with what they do. Are you wanting to keep the light brown and have highlights but just a different color highlights? Because if you put anything on it is going to change all of your hair color of course, not just the highlights. In my experiences with toners they have made my hair look the color of say, a nice car floor mat LOL! If you put a golden blonde color on your hair, it is going to lighten all of your hair, so you would have golden blonde hair, with slightly lighter highlights. Your best bet if you do not want to go spend a lot of money at the hairdresser and don't want to change your entire hair color is to try to find a temporary wash-in color that will darken up your highlights a little. I like Garnier products a lot.
Kris Novoselic's (Nirvana) mom was my hairdresser.

I asked my mom, who is a hairdresser, and she said the best way is to use pure acetone. sm

Soak a cotton ball in acetone, hold the hair on a towel, then put the soaked cotton ball on top of the hair and hold for a few seconds.  Then keep wiping hair with wet, acetone-soaked cotton ball until the product comes off.  This may take several times, depending on how much glue she's got in her hair. Then wash hair.

Hope this works helps!

I loved my speech therapist.
I stuttered when I was a kid. I *loved* my speech therapist! Once I won a tiny stuffed penguin from an game in the grocery store. I just had to give it to her.
On my my last day of therapy she gave me a *huge* stuffed penguin! :)
In addition to a gift card or whatever you decide, have your son make a card for her. You could also write a letter to her supervisor about her work with your son.

I've been working with a therapist for over 6 months
about her tendency to sympathize or empathize with me the way a friend would - like rolling her eyes if I complain about something, or laughing about the same thing I'm saying is ridiculous.

I realize she's probably trying to create the 'therapeutic alliance' and a comfortable atmosphere. But I'm suddenly really troubled that I'm paying money I can barely afford for someone to act basically like a friend. Last week I said I worked in a horrible, tacky part of city and she said "That area really is awful."

Later I wondered, why didn't she remain neutral and maybe point out that I see all neighborhoods I have to work in as hideous, depriving landscapes? That maybe it isn't a rational perception?

Do you think I'm right to mistrust this approach?

I think that is an awesome idea for a speach therapist! NM

Have you spoken with a counselor, therapist, or your minister?

It would probably help if you could express your feelings out loud and get some feedback from someone who is trained to deal with emotional dilemmas like you are experiencing. I would strongly encourage it, especially since you have had thoughts of suicide.

Sometimes it takes a little while to find the right "fit" in a therapist or counselor. If the first one doesn't seem to be helping, try someone else.

I had similar feelings when my son was finishing up high school and getting ready to go on to college. The so-called "empty nest syndrome," I guess. But there are a lot of components to it. It's like redefining yourself as a person, because for so long you have been meeting everyone else's needs, and now you are starting to realize that you have needs of your own.

So what you need to figure out is what fulfills you as a person. What do you want to do with the rest of your life? Literally. Five years from now, what would you like to be doing? When you figure that out, start figuring out how to make it happen.

The best of luck to you, and please feel free to email me if you like. I'm still working on some aspects of my "mid-life crisis," but I have worked through a lot of it. I would be happy to provide a sympathetic ear.

Sounds like you found a good therapist sm
we went through a horrible spell last year - daughter 17 wanted to get married a month before she turned 18, my husband supported this idea - she just graduated in May, no job, no license, no means of support and husband to be was just graduating, etc.  They are good kids but very young.  Husband supported her all the way and I was the bad guy for making her think things through hoping she would slow down a bit, etc.  Therapist made her dad get more involved but they did marry and now she rarely if ever speaks to me - she looks at me as nonsupportive.  Does not matter I busted my butt to see she had the wedding she wanted, etc.  I'm just numb at this point with her - she'll come around some day. In the mean time the ocnflicts between me and DH have stopped but his nonsupport will hurt for a logn time also.  I believe parents should always be a team.
I think you do have to go all out. A therapist and drug screen would be first priority nm

Maybe joint counseling with his therapist for starters since his meds don't seem to be working. A

Massage...

My DH got me a gift certificate for Hanukkah for a one hour massage package. I've never had one and I'm kind of nervous about it. What do you do? Do you keep anything on like your undies or are you all out there under the towel?

The appointment is for Friday morning. Also with the message I'm getting a one hour facial and a parafin hand treatment.

Any pointers you guys may have would be very helpful.

Massage critic sm

I would love to travel to different spas and resorts and try out different types of massages.  You know, strictly for the purpose of helping people know which ones are the best and the most relaxing... and of course be paid for doing it!!

:)

Questions re: Massage machines

Hi,

Looking to buy a massager for my feet mostly, but would like to use on other body parts as well--those MT hands and fingers and elbows and...on and on, and so a versatile massager would be great.

Was considering buying one of those little tripod jobs as a first time test, but they're $10 and it seemed foolish to drop that amount of money when I could get a serious one for 1-1/2 to 2x the price on eBay, etc.

I've been checking eBay, Amazon, Overstock, etc.  In general, the customer reviews for Dr. Scholl's is a big, fat NO as regards a variety of that company's models, so I'm not interested and have taken them permanently off my search list.

--Otherwise, anyone have any suggestions on model/brand, etc.?  I've seen on line several Pollenex and Sharper Image products that got good reviews and look like they're worth buying.

--Can anyone fill me in on the infrared massagers and what's so wonderful about them?

--Also, I have a sleep disorder; has anyone heard of a massager used near the head and/or neck causing neurologic interference or sleep problems due to the vibrations, electrical pulses?

(Once I saw an acupuncturist who used a machine with pads and electrodes that were applied to my head area--against my better judgement I allowed it.  I should have told him noooo freakin' way, but foolishly didn't.  My sleep was severely disturbed for several days despite my medication which is extremely effective.

Thanks a bunch.

Be careful of what type of massage too!

I got my husband a massage for a gift once...what a disaster!  We knew nothing about them...I thought it would be relaxing.  NOT!  Apparently it was for something called a "deep tissue massage."  What the heck did we know--a massage is a massage.  We almost had to call the ambulance to get him off the table because the lady just totally messed up his back, even though on the "getting to know you sheet" I had specifically wrote down that he had degenerative disk disease.  So here was this poor grown man, in tears, extreme pain, and completely embarassed that he couldn't move.  The massage lady was freaking out saying she had never had anything like that happen to her.  The total kicker was no money was ever refunded to us, and we never even got a call at home to check on him.  I was just so preoccupied with getting him safely into our pickup truck with minimal embarassment to him and getting him home.

Thinking back, he says he wouldn't have minded the whole ordeal at all if there was a "happy ending" to his massage, but alas, this was a "legit" place

 Men.

As a frequent massage recipient....sm
You'll more than likely love the massage and how relaxed you'll feel afterwards. They'll find sore muscles that you had no idea were sore - but having the kinks worked out will make you feel tons better. Be sure to drink a lot of water after the massage to help flush out the impurities they release from the muscles.

I do leave my undies on.
Gym membership? A massage? Weekend away for

Me too, the detachable shower massage comes in handy! nm

What's your best gift
Dh totally outdid himself this year by getting me a Kodak Easy Share digital camera and printing dock, and a new cordless phone with answering machine so he can leave me messages when he needs to.
Well, we know you were definitely given one gift....
stupidity.

LOL
re: gift
I don't think there would be anything wrong with giving them a nice gift! So what if they're distantly related to you! You enjoyed their company and you could write that in whatever card you send with the gift. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to bless someone with a gift because they touched your heart!

God bless!
Gift

What a wonderful, thoughtful gift. It will mean so much to them.
