Letter or card writing to Iraq sm

Posted By: Seasoned Survivor on 2008-01-11

Get an address for someone in Iraq and have them all write a letter or draw a picture for them.. All it will cost you is to buy some paper & envelopes and provide a stamp, won't cost much more for material than most projects. There was an address on here and perhaps she will e-mail you. My brother never forgot that my son's class did this for him. At that time the postage was free, not so with this president, I assume. I put postage in mine to Iraq, didn't ask.Dont know what the postage is today - it should be free but I seriously doubt it.Perhaps some parents would donate stamps as well.

Dog killing and mayor involved in letter writing
I am really in a twizzy this morning. Shirley Franklin, city of Atlanta mayor, wrote a letter to the judge involved in the Michael Vick dog fighting/killing asking for leniency as, how she put it, Vick had done a lot for the community and helped folks out. Phooey!!! I hope personally he never is able to return to the Falcons or any other football team. I think whatever he was able to accomplish was blown by the fact that he participated in the killing of dogs. How inhumane is that? I hope PETA gets out and strikes each and every time (if he is rehired by any jackoffs) he is supposed to be playing. Came from the ghetto and I suppose the thug still in him. What a shame. Never made a million in my life and he made mega millions and then threw it all away for ??? I am vexed by her doing such a deed and will send letter stating my feelings.

Credit Card Reform Can Cost Good Card Users

Part of article:

Credit cards have long been a very good deal for people who pay their bills on time and in full. Even as card companies imposed punitive fees and penalties on those late with their payments, the best customers racked up cash-back rewards, frequent-flier miles and other perks in recent years.

Now Congress is moving to limit the penalties on riskier borrowers, who have become a prime source of billions of dollars in fee revenue for the industry. And to make up for lost income, the card companies are going after those people with sterling credit.

We pay off our balance every month. If they do this (punish those who have sterling credit) Ridiculous!! I'll stop using my CC and pay by cash or check.

So much for reform.

IMO a card would not be out of order at all. Except a sympathy card, of course.
I totally agree a sympathy card wouldn't quite be the thing, but it sounded to me that the original poster of that idea didn't mean a sympathy card like one for death. I think sympathy in the sense of "hey, you had a rough time of it with this birth, and maybe things haven't been the way you imagined, but know that I'm thinking of you and I'm here if and when you need me."

I got PPD when my breastfeeding relationship didn't go right, following a birth plan that went seriously awry, and the reality of a fussy, picky baby instead of the happy, sleeping one that I had imagined.

I *did* spend a lot of time on the phone, but then everybody's different. I would have loved to get a cheerful card from a friend, however. Does anybody NOT like a card?

Bless your heart.....I hope she fares well....I've a young man who was in Behran at the height of it....came back somber and shell-shocked and can be called back up any day now.  I don't think it's right to be expected do 3 tours of duty with this "volunteer" army, navy, marine corps, air force, coast guard, national guard.  Send the big-wig politician's kids in to do it, darn it!  Perhaps you're daughter willl reconsider. My prayers are with you.  Cat

Gosh, these guys are OUR guys who are offering their lives for us, and will not ask for a thing. The operative word here is NOTHING, is which they ask for. Let's send them lots of SOMETHING! My opeative word is FIRST which is them. Let's get some dialogue going. No negative postings please! Let's just emphasize our GUYS AND GALS who will not be home for CHRISTmas!!!!!!!! I'm ready to give, are you?? Only legit please, we have a brain!
My son served in Iraq and he said he liked
The deck of cards I sent the best! That was sort of an add-in at the last minute to fill space in the box, yet he got the most use out of that.

He also liked the puzzle books and hard candy.
Heard from my nephew in Iraq!
I have written briefly about my 19-year-old nephew who is involved in this latest operation in Baghdad to route Al-Qaeda insurgents. Since it had been announced that his Division/Brigade was one of the primary groups in this action, we've all been just sick with worry. I just wanted to let you guys know that I had a very brief "I'm ok" email from him last night. He can't really say what he's doing or anything (naturally) but we're just sop happy to hear that he's okay. I can't think when I've been happier to open an email in my life! So I just wanted to share that happy news and to thank those of you who are praying/sending good thoughts/etc. for all of our troops. It means more than you can possibly realize.

if you have family in Iraq or Afghanistan,
and particularly if you are a Christian: I have a friend (a ranch wife) who has a number of things going on (for one, menopause, another feeling isolated) and she has all of her 4 sons serving right now, one in Afghanistan where things have been getting heated. She is very emotional, upset and i was wondering if any of you might be able to send (via e/m to me which i will forward) any words of encouragement. She was told by another friend, she didn't "have enough faith" which for the devout person she is, i think really hurt. I am just hoping someone in a similar situation who has a special understanding, maybe could help lift her spirits and encourage her.  Thanks for caring.
I would love to, but my husband is in Iraq :(
no message.
You never ever put anything in writing
that you would not want others to see. Now with the children being totally out of control, the school is probably being proactive in the discipline of this child- she surely is not being taught much from her home. I think the school probably is doing the right thing, maybe the child will not be so apt to post bad remarks about the next person.
Get everything in writing. sm

Any challenge of the validity of the debt must be in writing.  Send it certified.  Did you receive anything in writing from them?  By law they must send something in writing 5 days after the first phone call.  If they do happen to sue, show up in court or they will get a default judgment.  You can, however, ask for validation even in court.  Go to that website I gave you.  You will find tons of information about your rights in dealing with collection agencies.  http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/

Writing
I used to write all the time; my main focus was on poems/lyrics...I miss writing so much, I haven't done it in a few years because I have MS and I guess I have sort of given up yet the words are still inside; just a bit more difficult to get them out. I miss it so much - any tips you could offer me...I still have my MT gig but that gets a little hard too but i am still trying...
EVERYTHING in writing.
Start a journal & in it document every sniffle, every cough, every trip to the doctor or the pharmacy, every sleepless night, every lost hour of work, time & date & duration of mold smell. Requests to fix the problem have to be in writing. Mail them certified & get receipts. Conversations with the landlord: After they happen, write down word for word what was said, time, date.

If you have to resort to legal action to break the lease, you MUST have everything in writing. I suggest you get a book on tenant rights from Nolo Press or visit a lawyer NOW so that s/he can help you plan this out.
ever thought of donating to the troups in iraq? sm

Holiday gift for nephew in Iraq

I'd like to send a gift/gifts to my nephew in Iraq. This is his first Christmas away so I know it will be hard for him. If possible, I'd like to include something personal just for him and maybe some stuff for his buddies to share. I asked him point-blank what he'd like and, typical guy, he says "anything" which is of NO HELP at all. I have no clue what they're allowed to have or not have.

You guys have any ideas? Thanks!

Question for sending to troops in Iraq (sm)
I want to send my cousin a care package for Christmas but want to know if there is a list of things I cannot send. Can anyone help me out?

TIA!
Troops in Iraq throw a puppy off of a cliff.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii is investigating a shocking video of a smiling Marine throwing a puppy off the top of a steep hillside in Iraq into a gully below.

The video today gained widespread attention and condemnation on the Internet.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," the Kane'ohe Bay base said in a release.

Base officials said the video came to their attention this morning. An investigation has been initiated. Maj. Chris Perrine, a Marine spokesman here, said "it's looking like" the Marine is based out of Hawai'i.

"We do not tolerate this type of behavior and will take appropriate action," the base said.

Two Marines are seen in combat gear smiling as one holds a white-and-black puppy by the scruff of its neck. The dog seems to be about 8 weeks old and is motionless as it is held.

"Cute little puppy, huh?" says one Marine as he smiles broadly.

"Oh so cute, so cute, little puppy," says another in a child-like voice.

The Marine holding the puppy is then seen throwing the animal overhand into a desert-like gully below. The animal yelps until it thuds to the ground at the bottom of the gully.

"That's mean," one Marine says afterward.

The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of about 1,000 Hawai'i Marines recently replaced a sister unit in Iraq, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.

Marine Corps Base Hawai'i said the vast majority of Marines "conduct their duties in an honorable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States."

There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children. Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

The video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlCiUMoFu84
(Safe for work because it's blurry, but still very disturbing)

Some people have claimed it's possible the video is fake, but it doesn't seem likely.

Really, really sick.

This kind of twisted lack of humanity seems to stem partially from the brutal brainwashing soldiers go through in bootcamp, combined with the severe emotional stress of the field.

Whoever those guys are, I hope they're both discharged immediately, but I also hope they receive serious emotional help.

My husband I have, many times. Gas gouging, oil, immigration, Iraq. sm
he calls about anything he feels they should know about. You would be amazed at how easily you can get through to talk to them. If they are not there, their aide will take a message and you either get a phone call back or a letter.

In Michigan we have Carl Levin, Debby Stabenow, and Vern Ehlers. Their aides and my husband are on a first name basis. Literally. The aides are the front line of the reps and sens etc. They DO make note and you DO get a letter in the mail about your phone call. It doesn't really change anything, but at least the elected officials are aware of what the temprament of the voting public is.
I find the writing fantastic.
I get very annoyed with writers who have no writing skills. My hubby insisted I read a book a while back that was getting all these raves - the one they made a movie with Tom Hanks, and it was all about art and Rome and theories about Biblical history - I can't remember the name. That writer needs to walk the plank IMO. After one chapter I was livid that anybody would publish such a horrible writer, LOL. His vocabularly consists of about 100 words, for one thing.
The writing is on the wall, so to speak
You make a difference in the g'parents- your children are picking up on this. I had a similar thing going on with my son- my mother did all the loving, fun things he wanted- my father (they were divorced, each remarried) was strict, no fun to be around, hardworking but I believed in their being able to share and I did. Both are deceased now and I do not regret having him spend as much time with 1 as the other. Oh, BTW, one of my most enjoyable things as a child was when I spent time with my father and his wife- they had a small garden and I absolutely loved to dig up the potatoes- used to beg to get to do it. You should have a good talk with everyone and insist spending time with all- don’t let your feelings play into their hesitancy on going. Grandparents are not always right but she wants to have some time with them. Not all g'parents want to be bothered with kids, believe it or not.
I believe I was talking about the style of your writing.
Stay on task, please.

Well, writing this after the episode was shown.
Doubt we will see Callie and McSteamy but Merideth better get over that thing she has not dealing with her life with mom or she may lose her man.  Drives me nuts, let it go already, get over it, move on.  Liking the new doc Yang has her eyes on more every episode.  Gosh, we all sound like this is really a functional and actual hospital setting;-)
Thank you! From a Mom who had 2 daughters, serving 3 separate tours in Iraq - twice over Christmas.

Read up on writing etiquette. It is yelling.
It comes across as hateful
The company writing the 1099 reports that
They have to report the 1099s they distribute.

I personally have great disdain for tax evaders, which is what you are if you don't report your income.

I pay my taxes and report all of my income fairly and accurately. Those who don't are commiting a criminal act against me as a taxpayer and against the government.

Sending your 1099 in a black envelope would be a protective measure, prevening others from easily viewing information through the envelope. Not quite as underhanded as you seem to want to believe. :)

Check-writing doesn't bother me
so much as the little old ladies with their frail eyesight and arthritic hands, bless their hearts, digging in their coin purses for the exact change.  It's too bad I'm in such a hurry I can't just admire their independence.
US Soldier Kills 4 Fellow Troops Before Killing Himself At US Base In Iraq

***UPDATE*** The Associated Press reveals more details about the shooter:

The suspect had been disarmed after an earlier incident at the center but returned with another weapon, according to a senior military official in Washington, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation into the shootings was ongoing.

***UPDATE*** The American soldier who shot dead five fellow soldiers at a U.S. base in Baghdad is in custody.

"The shooter is a US soldier and he is in custody," US marine corps lieutenant Tom Garnett, a US military spokesman in Iraq, told reporters.

The New York Times adds some perspective to the tragedy:

The killings appeared to be the worst case of soldier-on-soldier violence among the American forces based in Iraq since the invasion more than six years ago.
The shootings, which took place at a stress clinic, highlight the problem of post-traumatic stress disorder among U.S. soldiers, notes the Guardian:

Stress is one of the biggest killers of US soldiers in Iraq. About a fifth of all US troops are thought to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, contributing to high divorce and suicide rates. An estimated one fifth of the 4,292 members of the US force in Iraq have died from non-combat causes, either in accidents or from suicide.
***UPDATE*** According to Fox News, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs Monday relayed President Obama's response to the tragedy. Obama expressed shock and sadness and is promising to fully investigate what exactly transpired at Camp Liberty, so as to prevent such incidents in the future.

***UPDATE*** AP has another update. The shooting was at a 'stress clinic':

Pentagon officials say five Americans are dead after a U.S. soldier opened fire at a U.S. base in Baghdad. They say the attacker is in custody.

The officials say the shootings happened on Camp Liberty at a stress clinic, where troops can go for help with the stresses of combat or stress from personal issues.

One senior military official in Washington says it's unclear whether those killed are workers at the clinic or were there for counseling. He says officials also are unsure whether all the dead are members of the military.

***UPDATE*** ABC News reports that the U.S. soldier who attacked fellow troops on a U.S, base in Iraq has killed five of them and is now in custody. Initial reports suggested that he had turned the gun on himself after his rampage.

***UPDATE*** AP now reports that the U.S. soldier who went on a rampage against his fellow troops in Iraq may have survived the incident:

Pentagon officials say five U.S. soldiers are dead after an American soldier opened fire at a U.S. base in Baghdad.

The officials say the shootings happened Monday at Camp Liberty near Baghdad's airport.

One senior military official in Washington said it was not yet clear whether the shooter was among the dead. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the circumstances surrounding the deaths are under investigation.

Initial reports indicated the Army soldier shot several others, then turned the gun on himself. But it was unclear whether he, too, had died.

***UPDATE*** CNN reports that 3 other U.S. soldiers were wounded during the friendly fire incident that has left 5 U.S. troops dead. An American soldier killed 4 of his fellow troops before killing himself.

According to the Washington Post, it is the single greatest loss of life in a single incident involving U.S. soldiers since a truck bomb last month took the lives of 5 American soldiers.

***UPDATE*** CNN has just sent out a breaking news alert reporting that senior defense officials have told the network that a US soldier killed 4 of his fellow troops before killing himself. Check back for more information.

McClatchy is reporting that a shooting at a U.S. base in Baghdad has left 5 soldiers dead. The shooting occurred at Camp Liberty, a base near the Baghdad airport.

You will probably just need a letter
from your vet. But if you have any of the packages from the bad food, keep them, whether they are empty or still full. If they are still full, at least you can show you had been buying them at the time. Just make sure nobody accidently uses them!

I worked for a family practice physician who would send personal letters to the family of any of his patients who died. He also pulled me aside when my dad died and expressed his condolences and told me how much he had enjoyed being my dad's doctor. What a great guy.
Anyone else get this letter in mail?
Got letter in mail --  inquiry about 'opportunity' for my service to hire on 50+ MTs including dictation platform - something about an MTSO losing 98% of its hospital business in November and wanting to place these MTs.  ?  I'm wondering if these poor MTs even know about it yet ??

Sad letter to granddaughter
My GD has started college now. This is son's child. I have posted here before but for years I was always put on the backburner, her maternal side of the family always came first. I tried, really tried, took the entire family on wonderful vacations, bought clothes, gave them this and that but hardly any visits (passed me by on the way to the other GMs home) - always calls though from DIL but I so wanted to speak with my own son some. Oh, I could see and talk with him when I paid to have work done around my home (although on the maternal's side, GM and great-GM always had yard cleaning, painting, whatever done as freebies.) It really hurt my feelings. My DIL's family have no outside friends, just family and thick as thieves so I was the outsider. I remarried about 7 or so years ago and have wonderful man for a husband, spoils me and we have, in our golden years, much to be thankful for, jobs, travel, wonderful relationship. After my son wanted to give me a tongue lashing about what he perceives me to get in money from my father's estate, I had enough and basically threw in the towel. Just too much to take any more abuse, verbal or otherwise. I get letter yesterday from my GD asking me why did I give up "blood" for my present husband? I could not believe what she said. She said saw her great-aunts more than she does me or even communicates with me- This went on from the time she was born and it was due to her mother basically taking the kids around her family more than me. I used to cry, I was sad but finally just gave up and I mean no visits, no calls, no nothing. I cannot tell her why- she probably would never believe me and why should she? She is her mother's daughter and extremely close to the maternal side. I wrote her back and told her unable to say why, would not be believed anyway- would only cause people to feel worse towards me (I never explained to anyone there why I stopped coming around- just stopped). I have been passed over all these years, just basically ignored when it came to the kids and now this?? I told her I would be the fall guy and to believe the ones she has heard for years, I would have nothing more to say. My father (prior to his death) had given the GD and her brother both $5,000.00 in their high school years to buy their clothing until they got out of HS- her mother spent that but does this daughter know? I kept that a secret- never said anything, would not be believed probably but yet this GD says I bailed when times got tough? My father also gave the GD and her brother (both my g-children) $20,000.00 several years ago for their college- I have no idea if any of that left in the bank as after father's death the parents of these children had access to the accounts- and yet I am to blame for bailing so to speak? I could write a book on this. My heart has been heavy for years but no way could I find to squeeze into their lives and now this. The no visiting and so forth started way before this marriage and now I have a DH who loves and adores me and yet I am catching flak for dropping out. My GD says the bad thing is that I seem to be content with things as they are- I have had to learn to live and accept things as they are if I could not change them and I am content now .Anyone else have a similar problem? Oh BTW, I moved to my new home in 2004- son who lives about 15 minutes away has never been to my new home nor even called.
I think that is really a touching letter. sm
I could send the exact same letter to my mom, unfortunately she is no longer here. Not trying to bring you down, but I am going to start paying more attention to my MIL cooking. She does the Thanksgiving dinner every year and I just make a couple of casseroles. Just may have to spend the day with her which is something I really enjoy doing, most of the time. LOL

This is a letter I sent to the parents of a
I am writing to inform you that, after much discussion with other parents of children who are in direct contact with your son, Matthew, and daughter, Samantha, i.e. on the bus and in school, it has been the consensus that your children seem to be modeling quite a bit of inappropriate behavior, including bullying and inappropriate language, as well as not being able to keep their hands off of other children. As parents of children in this community, we are concerned about your children’s apparent complete lack of respect for not only the rules of the school and the bus, but also lack of empathy for the feelings of their classmates and fellow bus riders. Bullying is not only painful to the victim, but is also a reflection of the bully’s own ineptness at dealing with their own feelings of insecurity and perhaps a direct reflection of a dysfunctional home life. It also interferes with all of the children’s education and the feeling of safety and community in the school environment.

As the parents of these children, we would avail you to please work with your children to teach them appropriate behavior and to keep their hands to themselves in order to not be disruptive and stressors to the other well-adjusted children in the classroom setting.

Thank you in advance for your efforts to teach your children appropriate behavior and social skills.

anything positive come out of this letter?

I think the letter is fine (sm)
until it reaches the "Bullying is..." paragraph.  I would have left that section out.  At that point, it appears you are attempting to psychoanalyze these children, which is strange (and arrogant).
Stimulus Letter
Even though I had my direct deposited, I actually got a letter two days after it was already deposited that it would be coming.
If its a business letter,
I wouldn't use Thanks. It's too informal for me. I use the old standby Sincerely most often.

the following day. See I don't know if the secretary gave the interviewer the message and he didn't call back or if he didn't get it. If he did get it I'm worried if he calls again he'll seem to pushy.

They should just make it a law that you have to tell them right after the interview!! LOL
Send them a letter . . .
stating that the debt is not valid. They will have to prove the debt is valid within 30 days before they can continue trying to collect. A lot of times, collection agencies buy up batches of bad debt for pennies on the dollar and do not have documentation to prove it is a valid debt. Many times, they give up after this, but will sell it to another collection agency. Also send a letter telling them to stop contacting you. It is a good idea to send these letters certified.

If they cannot prove it, dispute it if it is on your credit reports. Also check your state's statute of limitations for collecting debt. In my state it is 7 years. If they do not collect it by then, they are legally out of luck.

Lastly, if they prove it is a valid debt and it is within the legal time frame, you can negotiate a payoff with them. Don't pay more than the original debt because they only paid pennies on the dollar for it.
having said that, I would tell my husband about the letter...
He deserves to know what is being said about him.
PS: I didn't send the letter...Thanks! nm
