When my son was about 8 or 9, we gave him a pool party - which, considering his birthday is January 11, was a very unusual treat for him. At the time, the local university would book their heated indoor swimming pool for parties. The only adults there were my husband and me, with about 7 or 8 kids. It never once occurred to us to get any kind of waiver signed. I can't even swim, but my husband is a very good swimmer, and we are both former x-ray techs with extensive CPR and first aid training, so we felt confident that we could handle any emergency that came up, at least until the paramedics got there.
I suppose we were naive, but the pool party was a great success and went off without incident. If anything had happened, the individuals involved would probably have sued the university instead of us, because we certainly didn't have any money for them to take. Even so, it never entered our minds that might happen. Of course, that was 12 years ago. Just goes to show that times change, and not always for the better.....
