It's true what they say about pets...

I started a couple of months ago with a new company.  Crappy sound quality, lousy ESL dictators.  I have practically been in tears a couple of times.  Then my kitty comes in and says hello, and I can feel myself calming down.  She's 16 years old and probably won't be here much longer, but I definitely see how pets can improve your health. I'll miss her sleeping in my office all day.

Pets
Hi,
I'm so sorry to year about your dogs's reactions to Frontline. I'm in Atlanta and we have flea problems almost as badly as you do in Florida. I hate these flea medications. I have used Advantage but am considering a holistic product called FleaFree. I have a friend who uses it and loves it. It's put in the dog's water or food I believe which is better than smelling it on their fur!
U obviously don't have any pets......

I have pets but
at Christmas when I have the dinner party this year, I will have to let my cats play in the garage that day. There are people in my husband's family who are terrified of cats and knowing this, I try to make arrangements when they come to make sure my house is clear. I am always recognizing not everyone loves my kids like I do. Sometimes it is not do they like/love, it is really a true fear sometime. I knew of a girl and her mother (African American) who on seeing a cat on their front porch 1 day did not leave out of the house to either go to work or for the child to go to school. I personally knew about this. It can be a real fear for some.
I'm sorry. It is so sad when our pets go.

what they say about pets
You never, ever know. My soulmate kitty, Quinn, died last year at 23-1/4 (yes, years). A very good vet said he had kidney disease and wouldn't make it to 2 years. So I got serious about fresh homemade food right then and he had the longest, completely healthy life of any cat I know. Check out home feline diets. Cheaper than the very best commercial. You know they're worth it!
I have more pets than 10! Not one on the list!
Dogs - Ziggy Stardurst and Mello Yello, and Moe. Cats - Michael Jackson and Dr. Finkelstein (daughter's fave dictator), Rabbits - Dobby, Lupin, Binky, Marshmallow, Snitch, Fleuffer, George and Fred - are you sensing a heavy Harry Potter theme here?? Pumpkin and Radad. And my 2 black bear hamsters - guy and girl - Joey and Zora...Now does anybody remember that pair?? Other hamsters Bob, Faramir, Oompah and SweetTart. Any donations will be gladly accepted for my zoo........
Best Floors with Pets
I'm considering doing all new floors in my house. Hardwood on the first floor and carpet on the second floor. Any recomendations on what is best (most durable) considering I have a small dog? I really like dark wide plank hardwood but am worried it might show scratches the most. Also I'm thinking berber carpet for the second floor.
What odd things do your pets do?

My pooch will only eat the food in the center part of his bowl. I'm not quite sure why he won't eat the food around the sides.

All animals, pets or not are most definitely
.
Pets' Names
We have a cat named Roscoe P, named after Roscoe P. Coltrane on Dukes of Hazard, our deceased cat's name was Raquel, and my daughter has a tortoise named Kaos.
re: leaving pets
No I don't leave messages but we've done some camping this summer and my kitty gets very mad when we leave. When we walked in the door after being away for a few days she wouldn't stop meowing at me, like she was telling me off for leaving her..she wouldn't let me pick her up either! Anyone else's pets get mad when you leave?

precious pets
Our pets, our friends, are so very, very precious. They love us unconditionally. What a blessing it is to share our lives with our pets. I am so very sorry for what has happened. I will pray for you. All our beloved pets, I optimistically feel, will be joined with us one day.
Pets are one of the best topics.
That and gardening and great vacation spots. Most people are very good about labeling their posts so you know what it's about before you bother clicking on something that won't interest you.

Know what else I like? Old cars. Like from 1900 thru 1969, the earlier and weirder or prettier the better. If I were going to collect anything, it would probably be models of little cars like that. Isn't that weird?
I am so sorry about your pets, have read
about the issues it seems you have been having. You love these little creatures so much and it really hurts when they are sick or when they leave us. My girl is an older girl and she has lost quite a bit of weight. She has thyroid- if hyper then can understand maybe the weight loss. No matter what I have tried, though, her throwing up continues. I thought maybe hairball problem and got feed for that. She was not eating at all. Here losing weight, not eating that food, tried senior food, no again. She loved the tuna flavored food yesterday and this morning I find puddles on new tiled floor which will not come up. I make myself heard clearly but like you say, folks just do not hear you or don’t listen because never asked for soft stool aid for her, she never had that going on. I am open to any suggestion for her sensitive stomach. Again, sorry about the things you are going through.
my pets eyes always look like that
when I take their picture. Must be my camera. It has red eye reduction, but I guess it doesn't have evil eye reduction.
Yes! I always use one of my pets' names! nm

Insurance for Pets
I wonder if there is insurance that covers illness in addition to accidents. We had a dog who had Cushing's Disease and the treatment cost us a small fortune.
Anyone have unusual pets?

Any a bit out of the norm pets out there?  And those who have more popular pets, any interesting tricks or traits?     (like beer drinking fish ... Lol)

Deer for pets

I am having a similar problem with my neighbor.  Her yard adjoins our yard and she puts out food for the deer right on the property line.  I don't mind the deer as they are pretty to watch, but it has gone from 2-3 deer from 5 years ago to nearly 10 deer constantly including bucks.  They walk from the woods through our yard to go to her yard to eat.  It has gotten to the point where the deer are roaming about all hours of the day, not just at dusk.  I, too, see them roaming the neighborhood.  One has come up on my front porch before.  I have small children as do my other neighbors and I am concerned that they are going to startle the deer and someone might get bitten.  I tell my kids to not to ever approach the deer and give them their distance.  I am also concerned about deer ticks too.

I asked her if she would not feed the deer on the property line as it is causing a potentially unsafe situation and she got very huffy about it and said she was an animal lover and it was her right to feed the deer if she so desired.  I tried to explain to her about the kids, not only mine but other kids, and the dangers of wild animals being in the yard and roaming around and she basically told me to "mind my own business."

I don't know in Pennsylvania what the laws are about having deer for pets or feeding them, etc, but I have heard in other states it is illegal.

sick pets
I get my critters from the shelter also and have brought home sick animals before. I would just take him to vet tomorrow. PLEASE AVOID Banfield at PetSmart. Usually vets offices have a few morning hours on Saturday. Take him tomorrow.
What to do about lack of pets --

Got a problem...

I had a Pomeranian for 5 years.  Had a cat for 4 months.

Last month I found out I was going to have to move (could not afford the old house any longer) and I found an apartment that would allow me to have my dog.  Then, lo and behold, 2 weeks ago (4 days before I moved), someone stole my dog out of my backyard (no, did not get loose - someone took him).  I canvassed the neighborhood, had the police visit several homes that were possible snatchers, but ended up having to move without finding him.

Well, the landlord would still not allow me to keep the cat even with paying a nice fat animal deposit so today I had to turn him over to the humane society.  My daughter had planned on taking him, but he was just a little too aggressive for the 1 year old granddaughter.

So, now, I am sitting here missing my babies and thinking I am going to have to get another dog.  Obviously I do not have a lot of money to spend on another dog, but I need and want the companionship and the fun that comes along with a dog.  So, some suggestions on what you think would be the best for me to get.

I really love the dogs with all the hair (Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Pekingese, etc), but I also think how nice it would be not to have all the hair all over me and the house.  I also think that a "mutt" might make a good choice, but upon my visit to the humane society today to turn over my cat, there was nothing but big dogs and I had to move into an apartment, so I think that would be too much.

Darn it, I am just lonely and feel like I have lost 2 of my kids right now!

OUr pets names..

At the moment we only have dogs, you wouldn't be interested in the coon dogs, dh named them Bob & John..lol..

we have an australian named Rex

dh also named this other dog Zip (because he runs fast)

We have had in the past, horses, other dogs, cats & a rabbit in the house

Rowdy, Dusty (was a dog & a pony), Sadie, Smokey, Bandit, Laddie, Freckles, Gus, Sheba, Spek, Skippy(rabbit), Bo, too many others to think...Fluffy, Josie (cats)

some others I like Amos for a dog, a friend had a blue heeler named amos

but I agree with the other post about seeing the animal FIRST.. then go from there, I have to look at a dog or any other animal before naming them..

All I can say is for people who want to cage their *pets*
or make them live outside (as another poster said), do yourself and them a favor and don't get them in the first place! How about that? :)
I am reading about all the pets we have in our lives
and hearing about the tragedy that has come our way, especially today. I know how much your animals(s) mean to you as they mean the same to me. I would ask all of you, not only the ones who have lost their friends and family today, but also the rest out there to consider an adoption from the humane society. There are a lot of anmals we can give good forever homes to. I give a donation each month to the humane society as well as take my newspapers there because they shred them and use for the animal beds. There is a little life out there waiting for a family, think about it.
We have adopted several pets from shelters

Do you leave messages for your pets?
Was away from home for a few days and decided to call and leave my cats a message on the answering machine.  Was feeling a little silly afterwards but then thought hey, I bet lots of people do that.  Anybody want to fess up and make me feel a little less goofy?
Craig's List also has pets.
Sometimes even people trying to rehome adorable tiny dogs like a Yorkie.

Just a thought. Hope you get just the right family member for you, but there can be a lot of heartbreak from getting a dog from a breeder who only cares about the money instead of one who is trying to improve the breed and doesn't breed their dogs to death.

I hate to be all depressing when you just want a puppy. Sorry.
Heat for outdoor pets? Anyone know? (sm)
We have two outdoor dogs and I want to be able to keep them warm at night - if we bring them inside in their crates they cry all night - and if we let them loose they go wild in the house.  They love to run and play outside all day and are very loving and friendly and happy - but not indoor types of dogs.  We have a barn they can go in at night but I still would like some type of heat for them.  I am afraid they might chew the electrical heated mats.  Anyone have ideas?  Thanks
I can see why some folks are giving up their pets

I just took Spot and Nerys to the vet for routine senior kitty blood checks. I also got Nerys a refill on her prednisalone. It cost $325.

Those furballs had better appreciate it tonight when I shove pills down their throats.

I agree, trust your pets
Dogs or cats for that matter. Whether they sense trouble or they sense the personality, it doesn't really matter. They are sending you a message and you should listen. Animals are known for being loyal to their owners at all cost. It's their nature. Have you ever been sick and had your dog lay next to your bed the entire day...same sort of thing. They are being loyal and protecting you. You don't have to tell them; they just know something isn't right.

I have had this experience with several pets, including my cat. Yes, I said my cat. lol She is like a dog in a lot of ways. They just know when something is off and they will tell you the best way they can. I never tell them a person is okay or to stop barking. If things are okay or the person is okay they will stop on their own without me saying a word. Somehow they just know.
Think you need a permit to actually keep deer as pets...sm
but I couldn't find anything on the Game Commission website about it being illegal to feed them. They do strongly discourage it, though, for a lot of what you posted.
regarding the subject of deers being kept as pets - sm
I just talked with several people at the wildlife offices and game law enforcement.  There is nothing they can do if the owners are allowing the deer to roam around as a wild deer would and are taking care of it, which they are.  They said there is not enough money in their budget to relocate this deer to another area.  This deer was again standing in my pansies eating away yesterday with deer repellent on there.  They also told me I was one of many who have called as of late.  Really, really annoyed and frustrated that this is the best the state of AL can do (no, I am not FROM here, just ended up here).
mmm...chia pets are tasty

one should never take meds prescribedfto pets
and vice versa! It is even more dangerous for pets! One shouldn't even take meds prescribed to somebody else! This is plain crazy.
Rough estimates on boarding pets?
I have a friend (not me, honest!) who needs to board 2 mini-pin/chihuahua mixes and 2 guinea pigs for 12 nights. Any rough estimates on what I should tell her to expect to pay? And, when she tours these places, any ideas what to look for aside from the obvious like cleanliness and such.

Thanks bunches!

Does anyone use Program flea meds for their pets? sm
I have three dogs and a cat that I was using a topical flea med on. We got a new puppy last week and she had fleas. I washed her and got rid of them, but now have noticed a couple of fleas on the other dogs. Not a lot, but some. I have heard that the Program works better than the topical stuff and would like to try it, but it is rather expensive so I am looking for any input before I buy it.  Thanks!!
this is a great post; I have shelter pets.

I cry every time I read that - for pets I have had to say good-bye to.

thanks for posting.  I know when I go, they will be the first "people" I look for - (fur people).

I don't know where you live, but all of our family pets are buried at their homes. SM
I truly feel for you and am actually hurting looking at this beautiful dog's picture. What a joy they are, and such a wonderful breed. I pray everything you want to do for him is a possibility. Just try to remember, the love never, ever ends. That is permanent, and nothing and no one can take that away.
because you're an animal lover....you will stay on this; so 2 pets don't get

They are such super family pets, and beautiful as well! Thanks for sharing. NM

Oh my goodness that's terrible! Do you know here it is legal for people to have them as PETS!? (s
Stay inside and be safe! There is a shelter here for them (NC) because people get them as pets when they are cute little cubs and then many abandon them as soon as they start growing larger, with no thought of the safety of other people!
Sorry, misread your post, that is nuts though, tigers are not pets - sm
they are asking for trouble. I have a friend who has a dog that is half wolf which I think is asking for trouble (and I love wolves).
After talking about summer plans down below, I was wondering what some do with their pets
when they go on vacation?  I have thought about the kennel for my dog, but she's so spoiled and loves people.  I just worry she'll be so upset at being at the kennel.  My mom will take her, but they put there dogs outdoors in little fenced in kennels for each dog with a dog house, food, and water and then they let them out twice a day to run.  I just don't think my baby can handle that either.  She needs to be indoors at night close to people.
We've done that! You can bring pets to my grandma's nursing home on certain days (sm)

You have to go through a little evaluation with your animal, but they have cat days and dog days and you can bring your pets.  Walter is a huge patient sweetie - 120 pounds of shiny black fur and muscle - he is quite young and very solid and built.  Some of the residents love him so much.  He will just slowly walk up to someone he feels might be receptive to him, and when they put their hand out he gets under it and next thing you know he has his big head in their lab and they are slowly petting him, over and over and over.  It is so heartwarming when you are watching.... I mean literally your heart is so full you can feel it in your throat.  I've had to hide my tears every time.

Sometimes a resident, usually a gentleman, will talk about a dog he used to have with the clearest memory.

A funny thing happened when Walter was getting some attention from a women in a wheelchair and he leaned against her and I saw her wheelchair was slowly being pushed across the lawn.
