In VA about 2 hours from the coast, after the last hurricane - sm

in 2003 (also due to 9-11 though) ours jumped from $400 to 650; which compared to those of you in FL is nothing obviously but at the time it seemed quite large. Our car insurance is still quite low though about $400 a year for each of our 2 trucks.

I moved coast to coast...sm
First, your niece is adorable! Can't blame you for wanting to be near her.
I moved from New Jersey to Seattle when I was 29. Knew absolutely no one. Friends/family asked me what I would do if I didn't like it, and I reminded them that I was not in exile; I could come home at any time. Still in Seattle, no regrets, visit family/friends almost yearly. Mom and sister eventually moved out here. Definitely do your homework. If possible, visit the area you plan on moving to, check out apartments/homes, the environment. If you have a lot of stuff, check into location/prices of storage. I had visited Seattle about a year before moving, talked to a few apartment managers to explain my out-of-state status and protocol for securing an apartment by phone when the time came, then eventually bought a house. At that time, I was not an MT, so worked for Kelly Temps for a few months. Again, my mantra--you are not in exile; you can go home if it does not work out. By moving to Seattle, I never have to ask, what would have happened if I had moved to Seattle? Best wishes, whatever you choose to do.
But thier actual hours are much more than just the hours

Hurricane....
I have many many family members in Houston, north and south suburbs, and Galveston area as well. They said the flooding was minor and really no major power outages, just a lot of rain and wind.....they really need the rain too!!! I'm sure your friend will contact you shortly. Her internet is probably still down.
Hurricane Noel
We got power back late yesterday, but what a mess. In my yard, some trees fell, others broke at the top, and there are a few widowmakers hanging from the tops of others. So we have to work around the yard looking up all the time to make sure nothing is going to fall on us. Tree crews are out clearing secondary roads today so there is a big problem trying to get someone to take care of it.
We have one big tree that broke at about 9 feet high, but the top of it is stuck 30 feet up in the crook of another tree. It is hanging over the power lines to my house and seems to be sinking a little lower as the day goes on. Hoping to hear from one of the tree companies soon or we will be out of power again!
Thankfully, there was not much rain just some scary, scary wind.
Hurricane Deja Vu
I live near near New Orleans and this Hurricane Gustav is causing many of us considerable angst! It doesn't help that we are coming up on the 3rd anniversary for Hurricane Katrina I so clearly recall closing up my office the Friday afternoon thinking we may be closed for a day or two, never imagining that it would be 3 months later before we could return! So to anyone who might be affected by the storm, and at this point difficult to say who will be, I wish you the best! I think the hardest part is the NOT KNOWING and just waiting to see what happens
hurricane Deja-Vu
I live in Houma and just about holding my breath. I am single, live alone with a bunch of cats and a dog. Not knowing what to do or where to go is causing me great stress. And you have a point, now that we know what the worst case possibilities are since living through Katrina and Rita, how in the heck can you prepare for that?!
UPDATE ON HURRICANE GUSTAV
Just updated to a Cat 4 Storm near Cuba. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who will be affected by this storm. I hope everyone gets out safely and we definitely SHOULD NOT have a Katrina repeat. So far, it look likes officals are being Proactive and not Reactive as stated by FOX NEWS.
Hurricane Checklist - Funny!
I received this via email in 2004...One year before Katrina and four years before Gustav hit us. These are so true, yet hilarious at the same time.
To Ex-Louisianians, Present Louisianians, and Future Louisianians:
We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season. Any day now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weatherman pointing to some radar blob out in the Gulf of Mexico and making two basic meteorological points:
1. There is no need to panic
2. We could all be killed
Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in LA. If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "The Big One." Based on our experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:
1. Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days
2. Put these supplies in your car
3. Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween
Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in LA. We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:
HURRICANE INSURANCE
If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, provided that your home meets two basic requirements:
1. It is reasonably well built
2. It is located in Nebraska
Unfortunately, if your home is located in South LA, or any other area that may actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance. So, you'll have to scrounge for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss. Since Hurricane Georges, I have had an estimated 27 different home insurance companies. This week, I'm covered by the Bob and Big Stan Insurance Company, under a policy which states that, in addition to my premium, Bob and Big Stan are entitled, upon demand, to my kidneys.
SHUTTERS
Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, doors and, if it’s a major hurricane, the toilets. There are several types of shutters, all with advantages and disadvantages:
n Plywood shutters Advantage is that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap. The disadvantage is that, because you make them yourself, they will fall off.
n Sheet metal shutters These work well, once you get them all up. But, once you get them up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps that will not heal until December
n Roll Down Shutters The cream of the crop in shutters. They are very easy to use and will definitely protect your windows. Sadly, you will have to sell your house to pay for them.
HURRICANE-PROOF WINDOWS
These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection. They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane-force winds. You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska.
HURRICANE PROOFING YOUR PROPERTY
As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like BBQ grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc. You should, as a precaution, throw these into the swimming pool. If you don’t have one, get one installed immediately. Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles.
EVACUATION ROUTE
If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. To determine if you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's license. If the address says LA, you live in a low-lying area.
The purpose of an evacuation route is quite simple. It is to avoid being trapped in your home when the storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several hundred miles from your home, along with 200,000 other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be alone.
HURRICANE SUPPLIES
If you don’t evacuate, you will need supplies. Do not buy them now! Louisiana tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last bottle of water.
In addition to food and water, you will need the following:
n 23 flashlights
n At least $156 worth of batteries that turn out to be the wrong size for when the power goes off
n Bleach (I don’t know what for. Nobody seems to know what for, but it’s traditional, so get some)
n A buggy full of deodorant
n A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators (ask anyone who went through Camille or Audrey, there will be irate alligators)
n $35,000 worth of cash or diamonds so that you can buy a generator after the storm has passed from some man with no discernable teeth
These are all, of course, just basic precautions.
As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important to keep abreast of the situation by turning on the TV and watching reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the Gulf and tell you over and over and over how important it is for everyone to stay away from the Gulf.
The last item you will need, but definitely not the least, is alcohol. This is the most important item. Make sure you have enough to last from June to November. This is necessary for escape when you are stuck with relatives. But remember, after the season is over, you will need to restock for the holidays.
Honey, I grew up on the south shore of Long Island, NY in hurricane territory...
ya know how to duck and cover. I've never been through a major earthquake or a real tsunami yet though. Hey, there's always time for that. Cat
Exactly what is happening further up the coast
never been hit but could be and so insurance companies hightailing it. Where I live tornados (hurricaines on land) come through occasionally and I am sooo scared of these as sure most others are. I used to live on the coast on St Simons Island, hated it, but do not care for either situation as far as weather is concerned.
East Coast 11:30 a.m. and
It's a rainy, gloomy day, and I'm still in my jammies!
I love this job!
near the coast myself, used to love
taking the kids down there. You probably don't have jelly fish that far north, but take a small bottle of meat tenderizer in case of stings. Familiarize yourself and the kids with flags and what they mean. Undertow is a big deal, never try to swim straight back in, let the current carry you until you can get past it and then swim in. Then again, you can get far away from each other without even noticing, so look out for that. I can almost smell the beach just reading your note. I hope you have a wonderful time. Sunscreen, of course, bucket to rinse off sand from feet and legs before getting back in the car. Been too long since mine were that size.
MS, on the coast. It's still pretty bad here 18 mos. after Katrina.
And just for an added kick in the gut, after the storm our hospital gave our jobs to MQ.
Why can't the east coast people
talk about Idol as long as they state posting about Idol results and those on the West Coast should not read if they do not want to know the results.
I think only fair as some of us east coasters might want to discuss it as it happens.
Just a thought.
Gulf Coast people
BE SAFE. Praying Ike doesn't do as much damage as sounds like they are expecting. I have kids and grandkids there and they're planning to ride it out.
West coast is all expensive...
So you settled back at home, 13K! WOW I would never settle back in Cali... like you said it's way too expensive and the wages (at least what i make) definitely don't keep up with the cost of living. I have found in the South the living is sooooo much more affordable, but then I have to think of the pros and cons like the weather (never been in a hurricane, they kinda scare me)... but the people are absolutely wonderful! at least everyone I have encountered was so nice and polite, again nothing like the west coast. I just visited Atlanta when I was in NC two weeks ago and fell in LOVE with it. However, it's a bit big for me but I am curious to know more about it... just as an option. Do you mind if I email you directly? Thanks again for your insight!
34 right now, central Oregon coast range....
20 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. May get up to 47 today, woo hoo!
Gulf Coast Summer Vacation??
Hi! My DH and I are looking for ideas on a good place to stay for a Gulf Coast vacation. We usually rent a beach house every summer in the Outer Banks (North Carolina), but want to try the Gulf area this year. We've looked at renting a beach house in Florida, but it's really expensive and would really appreciate somewhere not so expensive. We've never been to the Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana or Texas coasts and are hoping someone on this lovely board has a personal experience with vacationing in one of these areas. We're going with a bunch of my family (including kids), so we want somewhere that is family friendly and safe. Thanks for any help!
Gulf Coast Summer Vacation
Might want to look into Gulf Shores Alabama, my family has been going there every year for the past 30 to 35 years and Gulf State Park offers either camping or cabins.
Best places to visit on the East coast
In June, my husband and I will be attending the HD Bike Week in Laconia, New Hampshire. If you had to name just two or three places that everyone should see on the East coast {Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, etc. down to North Carolina} what would they be? We will be visiting Maine - that is already on the agenda. We plan to visit Arlington National Cemetary and the Capitol. We have been on the Freedom Walk in Boston.
We have not determined how much time we will be spending on the East coast. Please just name the places you think we should visit if time wasn't a concern.
Thank you very much for your time, assistance, and input. I appreciate this very much!
I live on the East Coast where this is extremely common
for "older" women to be having babies. As long as you're healthy, I don't see it should be a problem. I was WAY too young when I had my daughter (19) and really wish I would have waited until I was in my 30s. The biggest problem I see here with women in their 40s having babies is that a lot of them are so focused on their careers that they don't spend enough time with their kids. I would think 39 would be okay, but you really are greatly increasing your risk of complications/birth defects if you wait much longer.
Needless to say, I'm ecstatic right now! I may live west coast now..
but am forever a phillygal!
Upper Texas coast, Houston area. sm
Now living in Austin near my daughter and grandson. God bless Texas! :)
I live on the East Coast, definitely not "small town America"
Again, you shouldn't make excuses to spoil your kids and you absolutey shouldn't make assumptions that I live in "small town America" as that's definitely not the case. I was extremely careful driving because I always knew that if I got any kind of traffic violation, I was going to have to pay for it with my insurance rates going up. I grew up with a lot of kids that were spoiled as they "had" to have the most expensive clothes and shoes and, of course, couldn't pay for anything else and then mommy and daddy would foot the bill! Absolutely insane!
Just heard that a massive tidal wave (or Tsunami) is headed for England's coast and sm
could reach land in the next 12 hours.
I'll be watching this and I'm sure you'll be hearing more about it soon!
First, that's a lot of hours!! (sm)
That's probably a big part of your problem is that you are working so many hours. But I have a great chair that I bought about 8 years ago when I was having shoulder pain from transcribing. I searched until I found one where the arms would raise up high enough so that I could rest my elbows on the chair arms while I work and that supported my shoulders.
I need about 10 hours!!!
LOL.
Really though, I don't feel all there if I don't get 7-8 hours of sleep, but maybe that is because I am accustomed to it, but also that "8 hours" is interrupted by being awoken by the man in my bed that breathes too loud! (i now sleep with ear plugs), plus I have to get up and pee like twice a night...
You raise an interesting point if you can gradually get used to sleeping less... think of all the things I could get done! But it never fails, I have been going to bed around 11, waking up around 6 (interrupted during the night) and without fail I get sooooo sleepy at about 1-2 p.m. Could that be because I have to sit and stare and type all day??
Dont know but I like this post!
I'm tired now :)
150 hours and then you still have to have

You can put up with just about anything for a few hours! sm
Does he realize how much it means to you that he and you spend Thanksgiving together? I would pull out all the stops here. Tell him it is just for a few hours, can he not put up with them for a few hours out of an entire year? He might also like some reassurance you are not going to let your sister cuss him out again and get away with it (if that is what happened last time). I really would emphasize how much you want him to go to be with you if nothing else. Then if all else fails, yes I am saying this, use the crying card. I am pulling for you!!!
About three hours ago!!! sm
I was walking down the hallway here at the hospital where I work. It is linoleum flooring and I have pumps on. I was heading down to the radiology department to talk to the doc about something and probably going a little too fast. I was turning the corner in the hallway and my heel just slipped right out from underneath my feet! I was mortified. But, you know what makes the story even better?...today is laundry day and all I had to wear to work today was a DRESS!!!!!!. So, I'm sitting on my rump in the middle of a busy hospital hallway trying to cover up my tush before the ENTIRE hospital saw it.
So, in conclusion I guess you could say that:
1. I will not be wearing a skirt or dress again to work any time soon.
and
2. I probably need to slow down on the corners!!!
LOL
Just got back from HOURS in the ER.
I don't understand why ER visits take so long. There were only two of us in there and we came in together. I was there for 3 1/2 hours.
Anyhoo, after my doctor stopped laughing, I was diagnosed with a flu-like viral illness, second degree ankle sprain, an award winning black eye and dehydration. I do normally have lower blood pressure around 100-110/49-70 and it was about 98/49 when he first saw me. He thinks I was just super talented and passed out from the stomach pain/nausea and sitting on the pot. I have an Aircast to wear for the next few weeks and told to just take it easy. He was more concerned about the chronic nausea I've had since my gallbladder surgery last year, but I think my body just misses all that lovely bile it produced.
So for now I'm pushing fluids and taking it easy.
Or maybe they could wait a few hours
before coming to the board where they very well know the east coasters want to be talking about it.
Yes, but after work hours is the same (nm)

P.S. - I was lucky, only out about 26 hours
and no trees down in my yard.
It's within a few hours of Las Vegas I believe
and 35 years ago when I lived in Vegas - Pahrump was a very, very small town - probably just a dot on the map - maybe not even a stop light - think I heard recently on some travel show that it had grown - but then again most all Nevada towns lately have.
3 p.m. I am so Hungry! 3 more hours
and I start the prep...Rite Aid Oral Saline AKA Fleets PhosphO-Soda AT 6 p.m. Ugghh. My DH's time is near as well. Just as well, I am throwing up everything I try to eat as my GERD symptoms and esophageal stricture is acting up. Think I will just get in my jammies and jump in bed.
4 hours of commuting
Sorry, but I think you are being a wee bit selfish. Your husband is commuting 4 hours a day, 20 hours a week. That is like having a part time job. But you don't want him gone a few nights a week because you will miss him? Give the guy a break. It is only for a few months. Like they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Okay, I'll do two hours
So the tougher the cuts the less time you marinate?
I would be happy with 6 hours a day...sm
Be glad you have work which I am sure you are. I know I need to look for another job. But it isn't easy in these times.
Calcium - take 2-4 every few hours. nm
nm
Actually, the first visit was 4 hours.
The next two were 2 hours each, if that matters.
Long Hours
I think you need to send your kids to your parents house for a overnight visit and have a long talk with your husband. A marriage is a two-way street, you may have run up the credit cards but he is the one getting laid off. True it is through no fault of his own but for him to put it all off on you and declare himself retired at 50 with two young children to raise leaving the burden of all the bills up to you is just plain wrong. Excuse me for saying this but you sound like you are afraid to approch him to talk about this, is there another reason that you are afraid to talk to him about it, besides the usual...I don't want to start a fight? How convenient for him, you keep your mouth shut, work even harder than you do now, support the family and he will watch TV while you do it. That just isn't how a marriage is supposed to work and is that what you want your kids to see as an example, the bottom falls out and Dad reacts by shutting down and watching TV?
Approximately 2 hours or so
I agree with the above poster. It's usually a ratio of 4 hours typing for 1 hour of dictation. It does vary, though for each individual.
I lose focus after a few hours : (

Tell you how I worked excessive hours
I did the same way as you for several years. I went to work at 5, got off at 1, took a short nap and then went back to work at 5 and worked until 10. This was 5 days a week and then worked the 5-10 on the weekends at least 1 day if not the second also. This nap was probably what kept me going for all those years I worked like that. By the way, only work part now and so happy finally able to get past all those hours.

Had to leave mine outside for a few hours
I kept wondering why sellers on ebay would put 'from a smoke-free home' on their ads. I eventually found out why! The smoke smell from the book was driving my cats crazy so I finally put it on the table on the porch outside and let it air out for a few hours.
But they can say I need xx reports/lines in 24 hours.

My mom is 8 hours away - but they happily stay with her (sm)
When I go visit my family, my kids stay with my mother while I go and visit other friends, etc. The difference might be that they have cousins there to play with and my mother jokes and plays with them and is affectionate. In-laws are not that way. No kids around my in-laws. I really don't know exactly why they think it is so horrible. I have asked them. They just say that they are bored, grandma is strict, she won't make any adaptations to things she cooks and makes them eat whatever she makes, she takes them to all-adult functions and makes them sit through things. They also have a farm and sometimes make the kids work very hard digging potatoes or whatever they are doing at the time.
