Imitrex (25 mg) tabs work the best for me. - sm

Posted By: San Francisco on 2007-09-08
In Reply to: Migraine headaches . . sm - Feeling bad today

I seem to have pretty much "outgrown" them these days, post-menopause. But for years before I had Imitrex, I lived in fear of them. Some other things that helped, before Imitrex was available:

Sometimes my migraines could be set off by smaller sinus or allergy headaches. I'm allergic to dust-mites, but unfortunately I'm ALSO allergic to housework - so I would wake up with a tiny headache frequently around 4:00 AM or so. The secret there is NOT to ignore the tiny headache. Frequently if I got myself out of bed, and took a combination of Extra-Strength Excedrin and a Sudafed, and then went back to bed, by the time I got up the next morning I'd be headache-free. Also, I knew that if I still had a headache after that, the chances were it really was an impending migraine, and would then take the Imitrex. ALSO, often the effect of the Imitrex was a bit faster and more complete if it had already been "jump-started" by having taken the Excedrin & Sudafed at 4:00 AM.

When Imitrex wasn't available, I was sometimes able to get even a full-blown migraine to leave more quickly with an ice bag. (Or without that, a few ice cubes in a ziploc bag or in a washcloth.) The secret THERE, (at least for me, anyway), was making sure I got at least one of the ice-cubes in EXACTLY the right spot on my head. Usually there was one spot where, if I pressed hard enough with a finger, I would feel the pain dim just a bit. By lying down and getting the ice directly onto exactly the right spot, and holding it there firmly, I would usually feel some relief almost immediately. And THEN the secret is, once you've found the exact spot, is to keep the pressure on with the ice, and lie absolutely still.

Sometimes this took 4 or 5 hours. (Still better than 2 days!) And sometimes just 45 minutes.

I've also had good luck in the past, if the headache was more towards the forehead, to use a cold washrag or an icebag.

How to deal with non-understanding people who don't know why you can't just take and aspirin and "snap out of it": Instead, tell them you have the STOMACH FLU. Same symptoms, really. (Plus they'll leave you alone / tell you to stay home from work, etc., because they don't want to "catch" it!

Avoidance tips: Some of the same things that cause cause some people to have epileptic attacks can also trigger a migraine. (That was true in my case). I avoided too-bright lights, or cartoons/commercials/movies that had a lot of bright colors jumping around in them. I avoid strobing fluorescent lights like the Plague. If I was at work and a light was strobing, either it had to be fixed, or I had to change desks, or else I was leaving! I don't look at the flashing light inside a copy machine, either.

For me one of the best ways to prevent one from coming on was just the security of having found a medication (Imitrex in my case) that I could rely on about 98% of the time. By always having some with me, I found it took alot of the fear away, and that in turn made me less tense, which in turn helped me avoid migraines more often.

Also, if you're a caffeine-addict like me, don't go off it cold-turkey - the rebound headache can trigger a migraine, too.

(And the other best cure was finally making it into my fifties!)

Good luck!

Yes, I could take Imitrex after a migraine had already started. (sm)
That was the beauty of it, (at least for me - everyone is different). The other thing that was nice about Imitrex was that I could still remain active while it was working... didn't have to go lie down in a dark cave, or anything. I've been able to abort many, nearly full-blown migraines while continuing to drive, ski in bright sunlight, hike, watch a concert, etc.

I was fortunate and had no side-effects from Imitrex at all. (Actually, I don't have side-effects with my SSRI, either.)

It did take a while to work, usually 50-90 min. in the beginning (still, that beats 3 days in bed!) As time went by, it seemed to work faster - sometimes in as little as 20 min. But maybe the differences in headache strength, duration, circumstances, etc. caused the variations. Fiorinal used to work, but gradually lost it's effectiveness. Also it's a narcotic, isn't it? Anyway, it spaced me out a little bit (who cares, if it gets rid of the pain!), and it was hard to get sometimes, especially if the frequency of use started to go up.

The nice thing about finding a drug that helps is that oddly, JUST KNOWING that I had a tablet with me, no matter where I went or what I was doing, actually seemed to cut down on my fear and anxiety about the migraines, and I actually had fewer of them as long as I had my Imitrex with me! There are other, similar drugs now - Zomig is one I can think of (though it doesn't work as well for me.) Even some you spray up your nose. So if one doesn't work, it's worth it to try others.

One thing about taking the Sudafed & Excedrin at the first sign of a migraine, was that if after about an hour, if it still wasn't better and I felt I needed to take Imitrex, the Imitrex seemed to work better and faster. Sort of like it had been "jump-started" by the earlier use of Sudafed & Excedrin. Of course, I also drank a lot of milk or ate some food with it, to keep my tummy happy.

I hear you on missing 3 days of work. I had problems at one job because my headaches always seemed to come on a Monday, and that obviously looked a little fishy. At the time I had no meds that worked. I got my doctor to write me a letter saying he was working on the problem. He also mentioned that the migraines could be rated as a true disability, and if so, the employer had to take all reasonable steps to accommodate that disability. (Which they eventually did).

I think I, too had a hormonal thing contributing to them, because after my hysterectomy they tapered off a bit.

I agree with you about the fear-psychosis thing... I swear that sometimes I could bring on a migraine simply by TALKING about them with someone! But again, having that little magic trick up my sleeve (i.e., Imitrex) made the fear go away.
keeping tabs
My daughter travels around the country for business and she is the only employee that calls her employer when she arrives on site and when she returns home. They really appreciate this.
Keeping tabs and silver platters

I'm in my 50s, but because I'm female and usually travel alone, I make sure someone in the family knows what plane/train I'm on or the general route I'm driving and I call them when I get there and when I get home.  Usually, I just leave a message because it's roaming minutes on the cell, but they know I'm OK.  That way, they don't worry without cause.  Should they ever have cause, then they can tell the cops where to start looking for me.

On another note, perhaps your son doesn't value what he's been given because it has been given to him on a silver platter.  I didn't have a car until I could buy it myself.  I had small scholarships to a private school, but my dad paid most of it - and it cost the same as buying a new car every year (which was not his style).  If I had pulled anything even vaguely resembling what your son did, I'd have been pulled out of school at the end of the semester and brought home to find a job I could walk to in my little rural town.  I'd have been paying room and board at home, too, until I found a place to live.  When I came to my senses and came crawling back to dad for help, he might have cosigned a loan to send me to the regional state school in the next town over, a fate worse than death.  I knew for a fact dad would do this if I got out of line or got bad grades, so I made sure I never did.

I click tabs daily. People, look what a click can do.

Yes - does not work! Hoax if you ask me. MetaboLife doesn't work either.
The only thing that works for me is exercise and eating correctly! No quick fix, unfortunately.
You dont work for them, you work for YOU. If you

I TRIED to work, WANTED to work, but
So now I have to scramble for the rest of the week, trying to catch up on what I didn't do today. And of course, working today was in hopes of catching up on whatI didn't do last week. This job is a never-ending hamster-wheel of lunacy.
Everyone has to work once in a while!
Normally in this industry, you are paid an incentive to work "holidays".  When I was in-house, I was offered a day off other than the holiday I worked, which was great.  I was also offered to only work a 4 hour day, in-house.  At home, you should also be given an incentive for those holidays!  Some people think that Martin Luther King Day is more important than Christmas because they may celebrate Kwanzaa.  Some people feel that April Fool's Day is important, so they are willing to work Easter.  It goes on and on...  There will be times in your life when you have to make a choice, "one day off" or a career in the "medical field".  I would have to agree that we are important especially on those holidays. For example, most hospitals and emergent care units are staffed with one doctor, so it should really be only STATs you are typing.  It is hard to "choose" when you want to be "sick".  Hence, our salary!!!!!!!  Most people will work all kinds of crazy schedules to accomodate their own lives, so why be so uptight about working Christmas because your employer requires coverage.  On the other hand, this should be rotated amongst a pool of typists.  I worked with a lady that would always volunteer for Thanksgiving (she had no family), so she could have Christmas off just to make us all mad!  She'd say "well, I've worked the last 10 Thanksgivings, so I deserve Christmas off!  It was so sad!  Hmmmpphh!  :)  Good luck!  Have a nice holiday (no matter how you spend it)!
He did see my dog and work him up sm
and everything came back negative. I'm going to push him more on Tuesday when I call him. I like our vet a lot-have been using him for years with all of my dogs and so far he hasn't steered me wrong. I'm just not sure I want to wait much longer on getting him some medication. The poor little guy suffers so and it just scares the heck out of us. I mean, there isn't anything we can do but hold him and ride it out and just be there when he comes out of it. I just haven't had to deal with anything like this before.
Nah, I do it, too, the more I work, the more I do it.
on vacation, notsomuch!
Does this work?
testing
Both will work actually.
For people who want to learn about something, anything, Google is a great tool.  If you want to get into semantics about it though, personally I have real-life, first-hand experience with these critters called OTTBs.  That stands for off-track thoroughbreds.  They live until their late 20's and sometimes into their 30's and that is rarely taken into consideration by the racing industry, who I feel should kick in a little cash at birth, for every single horse they register with Jockey Club, to ensure that these animals can be cared for, for the rest of their lives.  Oh wait...that would put a crimp in the breeders bottom line though, wouldn't it.
I used to work
with someone who would say the quirkiest things.  got on my nerves.
And I used to work with someone who had
a stick up their rectum and made everyone's lives mundane.
No, not every day and get this- I only work
part-time. She is always available when I want her to come over, can stay the night if I am working later, whenever I want her. You are probably going to start throwing rocks but my pay to her is anywhere from 50-75 dollars a day, depending on what she does, any extra things I have her do like cleaning the closets, putting up seasonal clothes, other than the regular clothes washing and the house cleaning (she does not iron on a regular basis but if I need something special, she would do that)- she used to cook for us but my hubby does that now. I DO NOT want to quit even my part time position- heck my husband might think I had the time to do housework too and ugh!!
Never during work...
I don't get that. They could buy a lot more if they only shopped on the off hours ;)
That might work if
He would actually go. I can only do so much to make him go. He is the most stubborn man in the world!!
It might work
to cover the parts of the couch they are scratching because cats tend to return to the same spot. If you cover the couch completely, they may go under the cover unless it's secured. If you prefer the cats stay completely off the couch, you could use Scat Mats. They give a little shock from a battery when touched.

Good luck. I've declawed cats before to save the furniture, and they never have the same muscle strength in their upper body after they lose the claws. I've switched to dogs because dogs listen, LOL.
I do work for PS and this is the one - sm
operation she does not like doing, says it leaves horrible scars. She does them but shows many before/after pics and actually has the patient talk to others that have had it done before she will do it for them. They go into it with their eyes wide open. So if you do get it re-done be prepared (that is if a Dr. will re-do you anyway).
How did that work
with insurance? I have one in my left armpit that really bugs me because it is so visible when I wear sleevless tops. My doctor told me that insurance would not cover removing it because it would be cosmetic purposes.
They do work, but -
You have to keep replacing them when their nails grow, or sometimes they just come off. I have all mine trained now not to touch the furniture. In fact, in the 25 years I have had cats I have never had a problem with my furniture being ruined (and I even have leather). I have scratching pads (both upright and the ones in the track ball cirle) that I keep supplied with fresh catnip that I grow myself. The cats LOVE it! They want to show me they are using the designated scratching areas because I always praise them when they do. Now, you need to put them in high traffic areas, not squirreled away some place your cats never go. Put them near the furniture, covered with fresh catnip. Then slowly transition the posts to another location, but put it some place the cats can easily get to. I bet it will work. Best of luck to you! :-)
that might work..
I do dearly love this cat and would rather move some place without carpet than get rid of him. The vet says that Maine Coon cats are supposed to be the easiest cat to train, so maybe it would be a matter of putting him in the crate at night until he got used to not having the food?
If you don’t work for MQ
then you are not allowed to post there. I see the posts coming in and I see no harm in asking that question.
Can you work in those?
NM
where do you work or are you an IC

I am just asking because its the opposite for me.  Congratulations though.  That is an accomplishment.

I wish that would work, but
my bank is merging with another bank this week, and they have gotten really strict about not crediting anything to your account after 2 p.m., even through the ATM. Until this week, I could make a deposit through the ATM until 8 p.m. and it was posted the same day. I did a "test" deposit this past Monday after 2 to see if I could trick the account, but it didn't work. I hate bank mergers.

I need overdraft, but I can't do anything about it today. All the offices were closed by the time I realized I was one penny short.

Thanks for the advice and keep the fingers and toes and anything else you can crossed!
Maybe they were getting work done
in the house and moved furniture out for that. Something like getting floors refinished. I worked with a girl who burned down her boyfriend's house because she locked it up tightly after they were working on it. The fumes filled the house and ignited from water heater or something. Besides I think insurance company would notice if there was no burnt furniture in the house.
I used to go to work at 5 but now
in my older years sleep until I wake, part timer, work 12-8 and absolutely love it, so much more energy than when I had to beat the keys 24/7.
Well, that might work for others however
I have the bird feeder sitting in front of my window where I work so I (as well as the furkids) can watch the birds- the squirrels get in a bush next to the feeder and make a flying leap. They don’t fool with going from the bottom up. By the way I feed all animals, be they birds or squirrels so doesnt really matter to me who is eating at what time.
Not sure if this will work -
Slide show of Cedric that DH made.
Maybe, just maybe, this would work -
Maybe you can embarrass them into calling first. Keep your doors locked, including the garage. Next time they show up unexpectedly, you and your husband hurriedly take off all your clothes and put on a robe, mess up your hair and answer the door like that. Then say, oh, sorry, we were just in the middle of something, now is not a good time. Just might work.........
I'm sorry your work is low
Hope it picks up. I'm loving today. All five of my doctors are out today so no work, but I still get paid to do nothing all day.
Don't know if this will work or not.....

This will never work out this way-
that being your husband not backing you in what you need. I had g'children living with us for awhile and I told my husband (his g'children actually) then that even though we were not the parents, we had to work together as a unit because if not the child(ren) know the weaknesses and they will use them to get their way. Getting rid of my problem probably would not be helpful to you- I had the older girl leave (she had other g'parents in the city) and eventually the other 2 left. What a headache and I know the feelings about being made out to be the wicked person in this situation. I have lived that.
No work for me
I was off yesterday and today. I'm actually off until next Wednesday. I hope in spite of working, everyone had a wonderful holiday.
Work, work, work. That's about it.
Pretty boring, huh?
work and
Applebee's tonight - Easter play tomorrow night. Would be going hiking but we have rain. . Also going to watch UK basketball this afternoon . . and if they win, again tonight. .
trying to work some also
this weekend.  take a break and take dogs for walk, maybe get a cup of java, and just relax later tonight :)
I think I work too much
:(
I work for the Q, too, though not for
long for the exact reason you mentioned - not making much money.  We're also building a house, signed our contract yesterday.  The price of lumbar may be down, but that must be about it.  It costs almost double to build a house than it did 10 years ago.  At any rate, I think you're right - he may be seeing it as rejection when you leave.  Try talking to him when he's not upset and let him know you're going to be his partner for life, so he may as well clue in on things now.
It has nothing to do with her work.
Her Myspace is a personal page that is meant for her friends not her kids or clients. I know plenty of people that work with children, and it really doesn't matter what they do outside of work...as long as they're not doing it in front of the kids or telling them/you about it. She should have her profile set to private though, and then there wouldn't even be a question as you wouldn't see them.
Well I now work outside, and our
weather has also been 100 in the shade for 6 days in a row. Unfortunately I can't stay in the shade. Thankfully I had the weekend off, but it was 100 or more degrees today. Apparently a cold front is coming through and it may only get to 98 tomorrow. Up until this it had been the perfect spring. I think I'm the only person wearing sunglasses, and even when I have them on I keep thinking I need sunglasses.
Work with me here
If I were to open up a little place that only serves hot dogs...........

1. What brands would you like to see on the menu..Kosher/non Kosher

2. What toppings

3. Would you limit the menu to only hot dogs or would you include brats..if so..what kind and toppings

4. Would you serve a bag of chips or an order of fries

5. Fountain drinks, or can/bottled drinks?
This might work
I have a cat that just hates every kind of litter I tried. I finally shredded newspapers and put in one of my pans. Romeo uses it everytime. The other cats started using it too. I use it in all the pans. Saves a fortune. I even use shredded mail. Any paper works although newspaper is more absorbent. It is worth a try. Good Luck!
Hmm...that just could work. I had tried - sm
both NO litter, and also putting flat newspaper in one of the pans noting that she would pee on things like cardboard boxes or magazines if I left them lying around. The problem with the flat paper is it doesn't absorb at all, so you have to wash the box not just every day, but every time she uses it. Now I'm wondering if, should the shredded paper work, it might not be possible to eventually wean her from that to something a little more absorbent, like "Yesterday's Mews", or maybe a combination of the two.

Thanks for your input! I'll give it a try!
Where I work now there is a guy (sm)
with a voice that puts me over the edge all the time. It's soooo distracting, in a good way. :op

If i'm not a mom, nor an MT, but i do work, then where do i work and what do i do?
x
Boy do you have your work cut out for you...sm
If he downloaded pics of this for his myspace page, that is not good. If he is interested enough to put it on his myspace, then I think he is interested enough to be doing it. He obviously thinks it is cool. After all he is a teenager.

You have to confront him. I mean it is not appropriate for a teenager to have these sorts of pics period. I don't know about not seeing the signs. Maybe he smokes it somewhere else and doesn't come around you when he is high. You need to show the pics to his dad. He has a right to know. And he needs some tough love anyways. And yes, I remember being 16 and if my parents hadn't been tough there is no telling where I would be today. Confront him, and tell him no hanging around his friend. I would personally call the friends parents too. They need to know. Tell your husband and let him get the punishment he deserves. He was warned the last time he got caught with the pipe. If he rebells deal with it when it happens. He definitely needs punishment and to know this will not be tolerated.
Please please please try to work with her
I saw a show once and they had an animal expert on and some lady thought her pet was mad at her and doing things just to aggravate her. The expert told her that animals do not think the way we do. I agree with Happy MT, there might be a medical reason as to the urination problem on your bed.

I know its frustrating, but animals do pick up on things. We have a cat here and whenver my DH and I talk about moving long distance, she gets aggravated and just acts weird. When we sit and talk about staying put or moving locally she is calm. I do believe that your pet will pick up on your emotions towards her and she probably does not understand why you are punishing her by putting her outside.

I too would take her to the vet and have her checked out and make sure everything is okay. Then I would try to gain back some of the love she feels you lost for her. We grow fresh catnip here in pots and almost every day we rub it on her mouse and she goes crazy for that. Then we pet her and play with a string and paper balls. Oh we do have lots of cat toys we bought for her but she prefers a piece of string and rolled up paper balls to play with.

I believe cats do have feelings. You can definitely tell when a cat or dog is feeling happy, sad or scared. Maybe keep her inside but close the door to your room so that she cannot come in anymore and then when she slowly regains her trust with you and behaves then you can slowly re-introduce her to the room and see how it works.

Maybe there is just something in your room that she doesn't like (a certain smell or something) and maybe it is scaring her.
I used to work like you
years ago because I liked to make money and also loved to have exotic vacations and money to spend. I hate to go to the store and have to count each penny. Up until 2000 when I remarried, I worked really 2 full time jobs. I have now slowed down but have money to cover things I want, finances changed for me with investments, money from parent, etc. I now have time to enjoy things I have been wanting to do, like rescuing animals just because I want to, no money involved for me on this, just the pure pleasure.
Me too! I work outside in it, and I had
a fun day today. The snow finally got wet enough that we could make snowballs, so we had a snowball fight. At lunch one of the guys fried up some crappie and we shared that. I had brought a big hunk of chocolate cake, so I shared that. Fun! I love my job at the plant nursery.
