But obesity IS life-threatening. I type lots of that stuff -
and for the most part the psych. evaluation is more to be sure the person has not only the desire for the operation, but the support in place to help them through the difficult time afterward. It's not a walk in the park, not only is it major surgery, but there are lots of eating problems afterward. Too much food, or too much fatty or other hard-to-digest food, and they can become quite ill. They also have to begin a diet and lose a certain percentage of their weight before they get okayed for surgery. I think in part to make them safer to operate on, but also to begin to change their eating habits. After the gastric bypass, one still has to watch what they eat so as not to regain weight. But of course the bypass helps with how much they eat - because the stomach is a lot smaller. Still, if all the requirements are in place, I think for many people GP is much preferable to dying of other diseases caused by obesity. It also can make it possible for them to exercise and build up their cardiovascular system, further improving their health.
That seems to be debatable even in the medical field. Disease or not disease?
things that could lead to diabetes and hypertension are true, they are still diseases and could obviously occur with or without staying away from known causes.
But for you to come here and say alcholism is "NOT" a disease is a little extreme and maybe should have been accompanied by IMO? That is my opinion anyway.

is nothing to sneeze at, and that child should have been sent home immediately and the little terrorist dealt with through appropriate authorities.
The issue about what's for lunch when the account is low is more understandable, although I think bread and water is a bit extreme. Our school serves a peanut butter sandwich and milk if a child's lunch account is overdrawn and remains so for a period of time. Oftentimes, for whatever reason, parents do not pay the lunch bill and the school gets stuck with it at the end of the year. If there are financial reasons why a child's lunch bill remains unpaid, there are resources such as free lunch and reduced lunch programs to help with this, but the parent does have to apply for it. The parent could also pack a lunch for the child if there is no money to pay for a school lunch.
Overall, I think keeping the lines of communication open between the parent and the teacher is the best route to take. Ours is a small school and so this is easier to do as the parent/teacher ratio is smaller and teachers are better able to communicate one on one with parents.

someone else, in our state anyway, they can take him and have him committed, ESPECIALLY since he told you he would use a gun to do it. That is called suicidal and homicidal ideation.

It IS NOT a disease. The use of it causes disease but
alcoholism in itself is not a disease. My husband was also predisposed to it by *genetics* (his mother and father were also alcoholics). He should have had better sense than to ever pick up the first drink, but he didn't. Now, for the rest of his life he will have to battle with the fact that he is an alcoholic (albeit, a recovering alcoholic). He CHOSE to drink. He CHOSE to take the chance and it caught up with him. It's just like cigarette smoking. That's not a disease, but the effects of the cigarettes cause disease. If one is predisposed to something harmful, they need to take control of themselves and stay away from whatever causes the problems associated with it. Both of my parents are diabetics, so that predisposes me to diabetes. They are both hypertensive (as am I). I'm predisposed to have hypertension, but I have to use my common sense and stay away from things that could cause the hypertension to blossom into something much more serious. The predisposition to alcoholism has to be handled the same way. STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!

My mom and dad's daschund was diagnosed with Cushing's disease. She's 15 years old. She's going to have to be medicine for the rest of her life. I've read on a web site this can be fatal. Has anyone ever had any experience with their pet having this? thanks.

Disease question
As someone in recovery for more than 9 years this is my take on it. Addiction (alcohlism) is a combination of nature (genetics) and nurture (environment). One can be predisposed to addiction but never know it if they never ingest the substance. Many people drink but not everyone is an alcoholic. Drinking the alcohol is a choice that one can control, but once an alcoholic or addict makes the choice to drink, they no longer have control over how their body reacts to it.
If classifying it as a disease is a way for health insurance companies to pay for treatment and healthcare for the alcoholic or addict, then that is fine with me. But it is NOT an excuse to drink and once one admits or realizes one is an alcoholic they ARE responsible for what happens after they take a drink.
To the original poster wife: The best way you can help your husband is to take care of yourself and your children through Alanon, Alateen and/or counseling. The only person YOU can control is YOU. Lives by example. Your husband just might find his own way to changing his life by watching you change yours.
thyroid disease
I have hypothyroidism and take Unithroid. I'm up to 150 mcg a day. The only thing I am sensitive to is hot and cold. My internal thermostat does not work well. No medication sensitivities though, but that does not mean much as each person is different. We all reactive diferently from each other. Good luck though. Hope things improve with this.
Foot-in-mouth-disease
At one time or another we have all suffered from it. Sometimes, things just pop out of our mouths before we have had a chance to edit them. What was probably a poor attempt at conversation turned out to be an embarrassing situation for both of you. Accept his apology and move on.

That really freaked me out on hearing that diagnosis. Cysts and pain come and go - supposedly we are to avoid chocolate and coffee/caffeine. yeah, right! No way! I do not do breast self-exams, and was also instructed not to do them as well by my OB/GYNs and surgeons, as we will always find a lump and then freak out. I have yearly detailed mammos - dozens of shots for surveillance. Had a cyst aspirated now and again, and have always been fine. In my 50s now and have gotten used to it - not lazy about it, but just not so afraid. Information is power! It is a very common "condition", by the way! We are all in good company!
Polycystic kidney disease....
My husband was just diagnosed with this. It is the mostly common inherited disease there is and many people don't know they have it. It generally leads to renal failure later in life. There is a new clinical trial beginning right now for a drug that is supposed to shrink the cysts. This is the third phase and so far it has been extremely successful. The clinical trial is at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Let me know if you need more info.

My thirst is Sjogren's disease! sm
I am always, always and forever chronically thirsty, but I don't have the polyuria to go with it.
I have dry eyes, dry nose (to a point where it is usually pretty full of scabs), dry mouth with caries at the gumline. I have gastroparesis and proctalgia fugax which often go with Sjogren's just like the rest of it. Dry skin and feeling like you are drying out from the inside out is part of it. I even get a nasty, clay-like sludgy feeling in my mouth and throat from my stomach being too dry to digest.
It is misery and even better than a gallon of water a day doesn't fix the dry feeling, but it keeps my kidneys from shutting down from being dry.

My 13 y.o. niece has just been dx with Grave's disease. Does anyone here have any info or sm
advice on what I can tell my brother about this? They are such a precious family. Brother visibly upset over this because he has been disciplining her for behavioral problems, etc., when all along it's been here thyroid. They want to do radiation right away to help shrink it? Or possibly remove thyroid altogether. She is so pretty. I spent the summer with them and yes, she did act diff. from other 13 year olds, looked very developed for her age (to me), and her eyes weren't bulging to me. I'm so glad they caught it today. It sounded like she was in the early stages of shock with fever, shakiness, etc.
Anyone with experience in this? Thank you so much.
Every woman in my family has thyroid disease...
and only about half of them are overweight, so that's just another excuse. You really need to stop blaming other people for your weight problems and take control of your own situation. I too have hypothyroidism, but I am a size 6 and was only overweight when I was eating unhealthy and not exercising. If you're really only eating one meal a day, I can guarantee this is why you can't lose weight! Your body is probably holding onto everything you eat because you're starving it!! You absolutely need to eat 3 (small) meals a day and 2 snacks. There's a book called The 3 Hour Diet that can really help you with what you should be eating, how much and how often. You sound like a very angry person and like you don't want accept that you're responsible for your own health. Honestly, you're not overweight because of what the government does or doesn't do, it because of what you're doing to your body.

Absolutely, it is a disease, but one that a person can recover from if they
have the desire to be sober. Unfortunately, there is no test to tell you prior to your first sip of alcohol that you area an alcoholic and will suffer from this disease and hurt everyone, including yourself. Fortunately, however, there are steps to recovery and, albiet it not a cure, it does not have to debilitate you. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been for 13 years. My recovery started with admitting my problem and taking the necessary steps to change and find other ways to deal with my self-esteem, problems and anxieties other than a drink. Since my recovery I have not only become "sober" but a much better person and very serene with my life, which of course has made a very producitve member of society and not "disabled." I think someone who accepts disability based on their alcoholism has not only accepted their fate, but accepted its consequences and not willing to change. I really think that is very sad.

Anyone with thyroid disease experience sensitivity
I have had thyroid disease for about 5 years now and am on Synthroid for it. I find that I cannot tolerate caffiene very well and narcotic/anlgesic medications, such as Novocaine make my heart race and make me feel so weirded out I can no longer tolerate this. I cannot even have a wisdom tooth pulled because of this.
Anywa, I thought it was just me but I recently read in a magazine that thyroid disease could cause sensitivity to medications. It would stand to reason once your thyroid levels were adjusted this would go away, but such is not the case with me. Does anybody else have this problem?

My daughter has hand, foot and mouth disease
She has 4 ulcers in her mouth and, of course, is in pain and won't eat anything. I put some cereal and milk in the blender this morning and she drank that okay, but her poor little mouth is really painful. We tried the saltwater rinses, but that didn't help. We have been using Orajel on the biggest sore, but was wondering if anyone has any other ideas for pain relief. She's been coping pretty good with the blisters on her hands and feet so far, but this is only the 2nd day. Hopefully, this will be over soon. Thanks for any help!

Incidental finding, polycystic kidney disease
Not something that I would have liked to hear but being as older, told the doctor maybe can outlive the cysts, i.e. having to be on dialysis and/or dying because of them. I had an MRI of another region and those picked up, told someone in my family had to have and know of no one. The cysts I have can go anywhere in your body so they will watch them every few months, no abnormal lab tests or the like, found those about 2 years ago. The kidney cysts are the only ones I know of.
Received a dx today of fibrocystic breast disease. Painful lumps in my breast. Going for a mammo
towards the end of the month. Anyone have any info on this disease?

I mean this just does not make any sense. I had an adjuster come out who looked to be right out of high school, looked at our roof, said it had a LOT more years left on it. I went right to the phone, called my company, said to send someone out that knew something about a roof. I got 3 estimates from roof companies and an estimate to redo one of our bathrooms where it was leaking through. When I threatened to go public with how many roofs were put on homes and checks paid in the field, at the owner's home, standing in their yard, and knew this folks didn't need a roof, then they actually gave me enough to replace our roof. If I sound bitter, I am. This is ridiculous. I cannot help a hurricane blew through, but one could argue spilling bleach in one's floor is their fault, not nature. My mother has an old home, over 90 years old. She has done the best she can with what she has, but when they came out and told her that she would have to pay a deductible to fix part of her room, and then another deductible to fix another part of her roof, because both problems didin't come from the hurricane (like they know this for fact), I blew a fuse. I went ballistic on them. She did get a check in the field from an adjuster at first, but it wouldn't even cover removing the old roof, let alone replacing it with a new one. After the hurricane, she had leaking in several rooms in her home. I pitched a hissy fit. They then came back out and I got a roofer to meet with them, and she then got enough to actually replace the roof and supposedly to fix the ceilings in her house....though I don't think it would cover all that. I called our state insurance commissioner and let into him.....I told him I would expose the garbage going on. People 1 to 2weeks after the storm getting all kinds of paid repairs, but those of us who had to wait later on down the line for an adjuster, were being told they couldn't find a problem. No, the money started flowing out like a river, and then after a few weeks, they start telling their adjusters to tell anyone else they don't see a problem. Bull!

than Stephen King and John Grisham together could have conjured up. Maybe Howard Stern was a plant in her life by the millionaire's family or maybe someone else close to her was planted by his family. I don't know, but it is the most sensational story I've ever heard in my life.

I knew her from when she worked on the North side near the airport. She had Daniel with her at the motel not far away. I was a waitress and we had a meeting for all the employees of a new club and she came and had Daniel with her and I had my son (now almost 19) with me and they played for a bit and she would come to my house on occasion with him.
To be totally honest when in the clubs people are introduced as "family" so I dont know if her "sister" was actually her "sister".
I was a different person back then and unlike her I was able to get away from all of that. I wish things had worked out differently for her and especially for Daniel he deserved so much more.
I hope for Daniellynn??sp?? that she has her mothers spirit and tenacity and her brothers sweetness so that she can see through all this and know that her mother and brother loved her very much.

I just read on MSNBC that China executed the ex-head of the Food and Drug Agency for taking bribes to okay substandard drugs citing, "Such cases have brought shame to our administration and revealed serious problems in approving antibiotics blamed for, at least, 10 deaths and other substandard medications." I sometimes wonder how much this sort of thing is going on in the rest of the world??

Its her life though
You can't plan someone's whole life for them, or tell them they are ruining it because they have chosen a different path than you chose for them. She has to make her own mistakes and learn things in her own way. What you might call a ruined life could end up making her very happy in the long run. You do not have a crystal ball in that regard. Everyone has had a "bad boyfriend" or several and its a learning process. You can't choose who someone else is attracted to.
When I had children I realized they will not be a carbon copy of me, they will have their own experiences, feelings, etc. from day one. I made up my mind when my child was little that even though I might not like or agree with my child's life choices, I'm just going to have to grit my teeth and bear it. Its about what makes them happy, not about what makes ME happy.

You know, I saw that plastic snowman in the window straight off! We had one like that when I was a kid too! I think we had a halloween decoration or two made out of that same funky chippy plastic. Very retro! Thanks for posting the picture!

A vet told me years ago when I took in a young stray cat that the strays "seem to instinctively know the best places to show up" so they can have a good home. I think he's right! Looks like she picked the perfect home!
My life now could not be better
I am at a point in my life where I do not have to answer to others, can do what I want, have money to travel, don’t have to work 3 or 4 jobs to make ends meet, in fact working part now, have money in the bank, a loving husband, my daughter, family out of state. No one makes your happiness- only you can make it. I do not count on my children for happiness- I wish them well and that is all I do. They are on their own and hope they continue to be able to. I feel so blessed every day- I thank the good Lord above for my husband, he is a jewel. My daughter loves her stepfather - he had a birthday recently and she left him a message wishing him Hbirthday and tells me she is happy for my happiness. I would not wish to return to my earlier years for anything, so glad I am where I am in my life now. Totally blessed woman.

Life was fun up until about age 8,
and then it started getting more complicated.
From those early years I remember wonderful summer nights in Wisconsin with the windows open and cool breezes coming in, the June bugs hitting the screens, summer pajamas. I remember riding bikes and pretending they were horses. I remember shopping for fall clothes when we were lucky enough to get some instead of having them all hand-made from ugly Jiffy patterns. I remember the WI State Fair and winning 3rd and then 2nd prize in the twin contest there. I remember vacationing in cottages in Vermont when I was 4. I remember climbing our maple trees and being about 50 feet high and that was a normal thing to do.
I remember my first kiss from a boy when I was 3 and he was 2. He tried to talk me into walking down the sidewalk to watch a store being constructed and I had to explain my mom wouldn't let me do that.
From later years I remember good times camping with the girlscouts and the time we found a secret place to go near our house where there was a grove of sumacs you could sit under to get away from the world.
You know, we all have needs in life, and
recognition is one of them. Good for you for doing something beneficial for animals, and it doesn't hurt the animals that you'd like others to know you have done something nice in life. I know the Bible says that kindnesses done in secret will be rewarded in heaven, but life is tough and to get through it, I don't see why we can't have a little pleasure or satisfaction out of life now and then to help make the druggery of life worth putting up with. If you want rewards in heaven, you can do something else anonymously, I suppose.

a lot shorter than you think since he has been screwing up his courage and back to banging on her door, etc, and he carries a gun, not a good combination.....get the restraining order, find out how to make it permanent, video tape everything he says and does on her property (with date/time stamp), as poster above said document everything, they can pull phone records and see he calls you and her 30 x a day, etc., call the cops every time he comes and harasses, the cops will take care of it I hope.... they might not like it but that is what they are paid to do so use them, I would just call them when he threatens suicide, don't tell him, just do it, and video tape the threats, etc. Good luck.

Just a few observations from living in the south. I never said anything about eating squirrel, rabbit, etc. Someone else must have gotten to you before I did for you to be so defensive. Thought true southern belles were sweet! Or is that a generalization that is wrong also?
I will tell you and from how my life has gone
my life was so down at 1 time but rut was what I called it. I too was the entire breadwinner, had a househusband. I did it all and not a cent from him, everything in my name but I felt like I was the person in charge, I felt superior, I really did. I was supporting 6 people at 1 time, everything (these were his g'children as well as my own daughter who lived with me). He died, I remarried and now I have a person who helps me everyway, financially as well as supportive. The other husband was a real dog, ran around on me and caused me so much stress. It was like a 1000 pounds lifted from my shoulders when he died. I never wished that but when it happened that is how I felt. My life is wonderful now. I am saying, the support and love I feel alone is priceless. I still work and hubby pays the bigger bills, I catch the smaller ones. I know where you are, I have been there, I have struggled, I have been stressed but it can and does turn around a lot. I know this. Probably with him it is like just another child around taking care of them, huh? I have gone from much abuse to none at all. Here are good wishes your way.
I cannot believe for the life of me that
this so called mother put another child thru such as she did. The raping and killing of that precious child. How could she? I would probably be glad to hand her some knife blades if I had them available and could get to her. Hopefully they would be extremely sharp enough to cut her throat ragged, sounds good enough for me.

I think it's fine if friends drop by for a few minutes to say hello, to touch base, to have a cup of tea with (few minutes to an hour). I believe there is not enough spontaniety in this life in general so this does not bother me when friends stop by. As a matter of fact, my friend who has cancer just rang my bell, we spent 30 minutes chatting here and she was heading home (same area). I loved it. Life is too short for it all to be about work-work-work and a clean house.
My opinion is that a home should be clean enough to be healthy and messy/dirty enough to be happy.
