In spite of everything, I do still love him, or at least the part of him that seems to be lost now. In trying to describe my mindset, I kind of think of it as throwing an emergency brake on a runaway vehicle. As to the son, as another poster mentioned, I think it's too late. The kid at 13 has smoked pot and drinks a beer now and then. There are things that the boy does that tend to mirror dad's behaviors, like picking friends over family, irresponsibility, self-centeredness, etc. He does a lot of things that, at least to my view, seem as though they are passive-aggressive type hostility directed at his father, and I've gotten kinda caught in the cross-fire, living with 2 children (the ex and his son) who believe that fun is the only thing that matters.
I don't really fear R when he is sober and when he is drunk, he doesn't have the attention span necessary to drive the 80 miles to my place. I actually fear his drunken cohorts more than him (there are a couple of them that make R look almost sane/normal); these are the kind of friends who would help you move a body, but only if they didn't have to go too far out of the way to do it. Frankly, my immediate fear is that the drunk relative that is his usual ride and his lunatic girlfriend will trash my car while I'm in the courthouse testifying, and I plan to ask the DA if there's some place secure that I can park my car during the trial.
