I was exactly the same way

I truly believe working as a waitress when I was in my early 20s helped. I hated it and it was very difficult for me at first and I had to get an Rx for a mild tranquilizer but after a while just knowing I had it on me helped (the pill-in-pocket theory). Then I began working in medical records in hospitals, then MT and management. I eventually felt I didn't have a choice but to be more assertive or would risk moving up in my career so I had to decide what was more important for me I guess and it's amazing what strong will can do. For me with the doctors, after initially being very intimated and afraid of them I soon realized they were just regular people and also what jerks so many of them were. One of my best memories was when I had a bag of M&Ms on my desk and one doc just helped himself. I was so angry at his arrogance I amazed myself by putting him in his place and telling him that was rude and he should ask before helping himself to someone's stuff (I was probably shaking and red as a beet but I did it). lol Then after waiting on them, bringing them charts, and treating them like royalty, I adopted a "they're no better than me, in fact I am far better" attitude and stuck with it. I also got involved in more activities as I got older and that helped. Maybe join a gym or a a bowling league, a book reading club at a library. Try going mall shopping by yourself, going to a movie alone, where you are forced to (or make yourself) interact with people and strangers on a consistent basis. If you avoid these kind of situations, it will never get better. Good luck to you. :)
