I was a grocery checker and he was my Sunday customer (kinda long)..

I would only see him on Sundays, usually every other, and I would look for him when I was on my breaks or lunch. Our offices and breakroom were upstairs with large picture windows and you could see most of the store. If I would see him wandering the aisles I would run down and open my checkstand for him. He came through my line one time and we made small chit chat. I asked him about a current event that was going on in our state that was pretty big news and he knew nothing about it; he had been on a 2 week business trip and hadn't heard the news. He then told me he was going sturgeon fishing for a couple of days; I acted interested and the next time he came through my line he brought me some smoked sturgeon. I hate fish, but of course took it anyway, thanked him profusely, and gave it to a neighbor (and my cats!). From then on for about 2 months I would see him every other Sunday. I scoped out what he bought, and determined he wasn't married (you can tell a lot about a person by what they grocery shop for).
Then, one day when I got off work, I had to do some grocery shopping. I was talking to a customer of mine in the produce section when all of a sudden here comes Mr. Sunday, who happened to work with the customer I was chatting with. Mr. Sunday said hi to me, general chit chat, and our mutual friend said that Mr. Sunday was a great guy, we looked cute together, maybe he should ask me out. Awkward moment, much laughter, customer leaves. Mr. Sunday and I are standing by the magos (he loves them, I hate them), he picks one out, asks me if I like them, I say yes (have lied twice now about food), grab one and buy it. My teenage daughter asked me when I got home what I was going to do with it and I said I didn't know; the neighbor got the mango too.
Finally, after not seeing Mr. Sunday for 2 weeks, I was gettng ready to go home on a weekday when all of a sudden who should come in but him. We literally bumped into each other. He asked me if I got the messages he left at the store for me. I told him no. He then looked at my nametag and said, "No wonder you didn't get the message, I thought your nametag said Sandra." Not my name....Apparently he called and left 3 messages for Sandra. They told him no one by that name worked there, hence I never got the messages. He gave me his phone number, told me to call him when I was free for lunch, and the rest is history. I found out he only came in on Sunday because he lived rurally, came in to go to church, only had to shop every other week because he was single (actually newly divorced). He worked in town but did 12-hour shifts, so if he came into the store at all to shop I was already off work by the time he came in.
Ten years later, he has since learned that I hate fish and mangos and what my REAL name is. We have an absolutely wonderful marriage, he makes me laugh every day, and he is a wonderful man. All because of the grocery store.

I was a grocery checker several years ago while going to school...
and he was my Sunday guy. I used to see him every other Sunday and he would always come through my line. If I was on break or lunch and would see him come in I would open my line up just for him. I could tell that he was single by what he was buying, plus he wore no ring. We talked all the time. He came in on a weekday and asked me if I got his message; he had called the store and left his name and number for me with the bookkeepers because he wanted to ask me out. We went out to lunch and I found out he only came in every other Sunday because he lived rurally and only shopped every 2 weeks after church. Nine years later and couldn't be happier.
Customer: As long as you are NOT
one of those really creepy ones who says absolutely nothing but filthy pickup lines and makes me hesitant to walk to my car alone at night, I'll be happy to chit-chat and smile. :)
I need help --- kinda long ---
I am seriously in need of some help and I know it. I am so depressed that I cannot function anymore. My income is down so much that I am getting ready to be evicted from my rental (after losing my home earlier in the year), I am by myself all the time because I have to stay chained to this computer to try to get work as it comes in. I took an inhouse job, but figured out tonight that after gas money and buying clothes to wear to work that I am only making about $60 in 6 hours and I can do that in 2 if I am at home in front of this darn computer. However, my expenses are based on $200 a day!
I am crying all the time about everything. I can't help it. I have cried my way through 2 hours of typing tonight.. I am short tempered, the littlest things set me off.
I don't want to kill myself, but I don't think it would be a big loss "waking up dead".
I have no insurance so I cannot go to the doctor...
I have no relationship with my parents or my sisters anymore (have not spoken to any of them since Thanksgiving day). My children are driving me crazy. My son is irresponsible and out in the streets (he's 19) and I worry about what is going to happen to him and feel responsible for providing him a place to live even though he is not working.
My daughter works and has 2 kids and I feel bad because right now I cannot mentally, physically, or financially be a good "nana" to my grandbabies. Then, my daughter just called me tonight and told me that she is having a LEAP emergently and that the doctor said he is going to have to take so much it would be dangerous for her to ever have children so he is going to do a tubal while he is there... this just serves to remind me that I was supposed to be having paps every 3 months for precancer and so far it has been over 3 years because I lost my insurance and cannot afford to go to the doctor - or pay for the treatments required if I do go - and now if I got insurance, it would all be preexisting anyway...
My checking account is overdrawn by $600 because Dish network put a hold on $500 while waiting on their equipment to be returned and I did not know they were going to do that, so now the stuff that was already outstanding is bouncing and I will be probably be $1000 in the hole before it is all over...
I don't know if too much else can go wrong, but I can't handle too much more and I need some calgon or something -
sorry to unload, but ya'll are all I have right now...
What is going on with me? kinda long - sm
I feel anxious all the time about the most mundane things. This started about 8 months ago in earnest, but I have never been an easgoing person. I feel as though I am off the charts now, however. Example: Car renewal tags normally arrive in about 2 days from the time I send the check in. Four days have now passed. I am worried sick something is wrong and I will not get them back and the tags will expire. Hubby just rolled his eyes when I told him about this, and I do know that nothing is probably wrong and they are just behind this year, but I am dwelling on it and about another hundred totally mundane things right now and imaging the worst possible outcomes. It is like somebody turned on a switch 8 months ago and I cannot turn it off. Not been able to sleep without taking Ambien CR since this all began 8 months ago because I will wake up every 2 hours, be awake for 2 hours, etc., and I do not do well without my sleep. Started back on BCPs after 20 years because I thought it was perhaps hormone issues, but they have not helped much at all after 5 months. I have also had a complete physical with all kinds of biophysical testing and blood work and am in excellent health in every way. Not sure what else to do here and am really frustrated by the constant anxious state that is making me (and my poor husband!) miserable. Should I go see my PCP , a shrink, what?
This one's kinda long
My cousin is a retired nurse. When she was old enough looking to be considered mature (ahem), there was a particular male patient on the floor who kept yanking IT out every time a female nurse came into his room. Nothing the nurses said to him seemed to matter - he just wouldn't stop. Finally they sent my cousin in to straight him out.
Nurse: You know, Mr. Overexposed, I hear you've been exposing yourself to the nurses. Just between me and you, you really ought not to do that. You know they're feeling so sorry for you.
Mr. Overexposed: They feel sorry for me? Why?
Nurse: Well, Mr. Overexposed, I wasn't going to say anything, but apparently they think it's so sad that you're so small down there...
Mr. Overexposed turned over a new fig-leaf instantaneously!
Just a few tips/suggestions (kinda long)
Don't think about how long it is going to take you to lose X amount of pounds. As long as you are going in the right direction, you're on the right track. Be patient. Think of it as 1/2 pound lost instead of 1 pound gained. Take one minute at a time because that's all the time it takes to consume something evil!
Try to establish some sort of eating schedule. I know things can get hectic, but if you can get in some kind of rhythm and structure, it's easier to stay on track.
Take fruit and vegies out of the hydrator and put them where you can see them when you open the fridge. If you have the time when you get home from the store immediately cut your snack veggies so they're ready to grab when you need them.
If you drink whole milk, wean yourself down to at least 1%. Obviously, no-fat dairy products, etc. are best.
Same with sodas. When I first started WW, I just couldn't do diet drinks. I just drank water for the first 4 months, but then I started out with Diet Sierra Mist or Diet Sprite. I think they have less aftertaste and eventually I was able to tolerate all diet drinks. Eliminating as much sugar as possible makes a big difference.
A couple things I really like that are pretty low-cal/fat/points are sandwiches of lettuce, tomato, sprouts, cucumbers, and dill pickles (the sandwich stuffer kind) on whole-wheat bread. Really fills me up and is tasty.
I also make taco salads with the normal taco veggies, but with fat-free sour cream and fat-free refried beans with either no meat or lean meat and lotsa salsa!
Eat high fiber-content foods. Another one of my favs is kidney beans (light and dark), garbanzo beans, green onions and vinegar. Filling, tasty, and pretty.
Also, Progresso now has 0-point soups. Whether or not you do WW, these are really low in calories and fat with a really good fiber content.
Of course, drink your water :-) and avoid alchol (a contributing factor to my recent gain -- kicked back with a couple cold ones on my only day off 'to relieve stress' -- that is coming to a screeching halt).
Plan meals as much as possible, but have some frozen dinners on hand just in case.
Oh and vegie burgers!! They aren't the greatest in the world but if you fry them in some spray rather than microwaving them and add losts of vegies, pickles, etc., they aren't too bad.
Read labels before you consume. Wake up call there :-)
And if you can, exercise. I didn't when I lost my 70 pounds, but no doubt things would have toned up a lot nicer if I had.
And don't be afraid of the people in your house (if you have them). When I started bringing in healthy food and started cooking more healthy, the only complaints were from me because they ate all my stuff!! ;-) I eventually stopped buying the previous evil food. I have to start working on that one again too...
Sorry this is so long, but you asked for tips and I didn't give you any in my other post LOL.
I'm very happy you posted. It helped me to remember and reinforce the things I need to practice again starting now.
Customer always right
I will tell you this, when my daughter gets these people on the phone, they never forget her. She nearly has them in tears by the time she is finished with them. She is polite and nice at the beginning, but when they start giving her the run aruond, she goes to work on them. She always gets action. If I have to deal with anyone over the phone, guess who takes over?
The 5 Millionth Customer
Two guys are in line at the grocery store. Man A lets Man B cut in front of him, when Man B said he was late for work. When Man B got to the register, he found out he'd won a $500 prize for being their 5 millionth customer. Had Man A not been generous, he would have won the prize money.
If this happened to you, would you share the money with Man A, or would you say "Sorry about your luck, you didn't have to let me cut in front."
(This was a set-up to see how customers would react.)
Dear Customer,
If I am asking for information, it is because I need it. You should thank me for checking your id. I don't care if nobody else asks or if you have spent thousands of dollars in this store. I don't care if it is a business check, I need to know who presented it! When you yell at me and turn all red, all I can think is that you will stroke out right in front of me, and I'm not going to want to help resuscitate you.
I'm a Charter customer. sm
Service has been fine. Make sure you keep their 1-800 number in your phone book because if you need to call them, that is the only way you can reach them. Also, usually they have an automated customer service to begin with before you get an actual person. It will tell you to turn off your computer, unplug your modem and router (if you have a router), wait a minute and plug everything back in and turn your computer back on. If you've already done this, I just keep hitting 0 (the zero button) on the telephone, and then you will get a real person. Once you talk to someone, they are usually able to fix the problem. If they don't, they'll schedule an appointment. However, 9 times out of 10, after I've waited an hour or 2, usually the internet is back up, and then I call them back to cancel the appointment. All in all, I have been very happy with them and have not had any down time in a long time (knock on wood).
wherever customer service is deplorable!...nm
Customer service in outer space
I made a service call on my freezer this morning and got a woman who could barely speak English, then had the nerve to tell me I had a bad phone because she could barely hear me - asked where she was and naturally that would be India.
Nordstrom.com sells BE Makeup and has faster shipping/ better customer service. ;-) nm
:-)
Even higher bill w/3 cells & a land line, but sound quality & customer service are good.

not sure if they are there on Sunday though.

Sunday dinner
Well, yeah....The boys (23 and 25) come over on Sunday afternoon before they go work to check up on us old folks and eat up our food. They'll come in and help with prep first. We get a lotta laughs in the kitchen.
They've been cooking since about the age of 5 and 7...I didn't have girls and they wanted to be part of the process... sous chefs (cut this, peel that, okay this is how you sautee) ....worked for me and they'll never starve wating for someone else to cook. Cat
Filled up Sunday - $93.00 - yea SUV ... nm

Oops! That should be Sunday 2/1/09

Another grocery store one (sm)
The ones who act like it's a total surprise that they actually have to take out their wallet and pay after they're given a total - worse yet, paying in cash, and have to dig around in their purse for the appropriate change. G-r-r-r
Grocery store......
My daughter worked at a grocery store as cashier in high school..she would come home disgusted at how some of these ladies would come through her aisle and pull their money out between their breasts...she hated touching that money. During the summer, she said it was even worse...they were sweaty and nasty and she had to take the money and recount it. She couldn't wash her hands enough!!
The man in grocery line who said anything to me
would have not liked what he heard from me then. I am way past the age of caring what I say and whether I would be offending and would have used, probably the F word, (yes I do use that when I get that ticked off)when he had such nerve as to say something when I was trying to feed my babies. I have never had anyone that rude to state unsolicitated remarks to me regarding them but they would really get an earful if they did. I might be kicked out of the store, oh well....
Grocery prices
I haven't done any baking in almost two years, but decided to try to get going for this Christmas. So, I get my list all ready and get my fanny out the door and to the market.....just to give myself a heart attack!! A small jar of honey, store brand, $6.00, a large can of Crisco, almost $7.00!! Flour, $3.50! I wanted to make some Italian annisette cookies, almost $5.00 for a small bottle of anise flavoring. forgetaboutit! Holy Cow!!! How the heck do families with kids manage?
On our news last night, they said here in RI, where the unemployment rate is 9.3%, they said that 1 in 6 kids will go hungry....that just makes me sick.
I think I won't be doing much as much baking as I had planned on. This is just nuts! Oh, and have you seen the price of them lately?!!
Update to Dayton: $1.93 on Sunday BUT
it is 10 cents cheaper if you use your Krogers card, so $1.83!!
My Friday is Sunday, end of the pay period.

oops -- do get epilepsy -- Sunday day off

Sunday walk in the park
DH and I were walking the dogs in a small park yesterday and a reddish bird swooped in front of us. It was the same color as a thrasher, but since he landed on a nearby tree limb I stopped to check. It was a tiny owl. Apparently an Eastern screech owl. They are common yet rarely noticed, so we thought it was really neat. The dogs never reacted to him at all, and the owl seemed as curious about us as we were about him. Our faces were maybe 4 feet from him.
Come to SoFla. Going to the beach on Sunday;
xx
We get to go to Emeril's for dinner Sunday.
Can't wait. I hope he's there himself.
Love sunday afternoons
As soon as I get done typing I will put a roast in the oven, prep the veggies and rolls.
We will eat about 445 - 5pm afterwhich the whole family (dogs too) will go down to the river for a walk. When we return home while the kids are showering I will mix a batch of Splenda ChocoChip to throw in the oven so when everyone is cleaned up we can curl up watch a movie (usually disney) with warm cookies and milk. Everyone is usually snug in bed by 9pm except for me. I log on a work for a few more hours.
My DH is a Browns fan. He cries every Sunday.

grocery store inconsideration--sm
This may sound weird, but I have had it happen to me just about every time I go to the grocery store, or any store really, that have shopping carts. People who stare right at you and then run right into you with their shopping carts, like they never even saw you. Most never even say excuse me. I just don't see how people can look you right in the eye and then run into you. I think it is purposely, just to get a reaction. RUDE.
grocery shopping with kids
I used to go to the frozen food section first, grab a box of popsicles and give them each one. It kept them happy and more importantly kept them from screaming because they had to eat those popsicles fast before they melted!
2 things in grocery stores
1. When your looking for a specific item and looking at all the choices and someone walks right in front of you and stops and does the same thing. Then they don't even have the decency to say excuse me or even look at you.
2. When your at the check out stand and writing a check on the little counter and the person behind you comes and stands so close to your back that you can feel them breathing down your neck or they are so close they can read your check.
Smoking in Grocery Store
I remember my mom pushing me in the grocery cart, I must have been 3 or 4, and she would be smoking away. When the cigarette was gone, she would throw it on the ground and step on it. Classy lady, I know, but really, that was the norm back in the 60's.
I'd start at the grocery store sm
Go for every loss leader in the place and cook with them. If baby carrots are cheap, get them. Glazed carrots. If zucchini is cheap, get some. Julianned, stir fried and splash on some soy sauce and garlic or oyster sauce and garlic, depends on what you have. Celery cheap? Waldorf salad. Potatoes are not usually cheap or very good this time of year.
Buy what is cheap and then look up recipes by ingredients. Much as I love allrecipes.com, I usually just use my good old Betty Crocker orange cookbook and look up by ingredients, substitute some stuff for things that are cheaper (i.e. another onion rather than another green pepper, ground beef for cut up steak, etc.)
Don't forget your seasonings, spices and garlic. Cheap food is not synonymous with food that doesn't taste good.
Ohhh and OLD FASHIONED MAC AND CHEESE out of that Betty Crocker. Cheap, easy and WONDERFUL.
Shun the cold cereal for other things. Look up breakfast cookies online. There are such things full of blackstrap, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, and other good for you stuff. It is novel for kids who think it is a joke to eat cookies and milk for breakfast.
I used to make a pumpkin pie and serve it as a veggie at dinner when I was short veggies and/or when we were having child company just to tease them: Eat up your vegetables! LOL
It was a full-on Italian Sunday dinner.
We always had Sunday dinner with my entire extended family. (We lived on the same street.) So Sundays were a giant food festival with my mother's, grandmom's, and aunts' kitchens going full blast right after church until all the food was brought to Grandmom's for dinner in the afternoon. The first time I cooked for DH, then-boyfriend, was just my usual Sunday routine. My mom was ill, so I did our share of the dinner, which was chicken parmigiana and probably some other things. I also made bread with my grandmother that morning. My poor husband came from a food-deprived culture. His mother can't cook, and Sunday dinners at his house were usually tuna sandwiches and tomato soup. He shared that information at the table with my family, and there was instant silence. You could have heard a pin drop. Jaws went slack and everyone stared. It's still one of my funniest memories. A second or two later, my older cousins started razzing me for bringing home the poor "Irish kid", and all the women jumped up and started heaping more food on my hubby's plate.
I was a grocery store cashier for several years..sm
and the best thing I saw come through line very late one night was a roll of duct tape, a bottle of wine, and condoms. The customer was one of my professors at school, I was the only checker open, so he had to come through my line. Ended up with an A in all 3 of his classes I was in, hopefully by smarts and not fear of blackmail!
ok my post about condoms in grocery stores was
You won't shop in any stores that have gay/lesbian items but you shop in your stores of your choice - where there are probably plenty of gay employees!
Don't you see the hypocrisy? I'm just trying to make a point. You cannot presume to know in a shop who is a gay/lesbian employee, correct? So you're defeating your own purpose I do believe.
Me? I think there's not enough love in this world and so if 2 people find each other in a loving way, it's okay by me. I really don't care who is *doing* who as it is none of my business.
I'm much more of a political shopper as another poster just said.......the poster who posted ALL that info towards the end of this entire thread about all the details about Wal-Mart including the dissatisfied Wal-Mart employees in China....being very careful where I spend my $$ for political reasons. In this light I have a problem with Target......so much of their $$ is given to a party I am not affiliated with, but, on the other hand, I just heard that Target gives so much back to the communities and charities and is a huge *giver* to the communities and charities - and that's a GREAT thing so I'm in a quandry about Target. *lol*
(Thank you to that poster who posted ALL the Wal-Mart problems information - that was TERRIFIC info, especially the stuff about China!!!)
In any event, we all do not need to be spatting about this - I mean it is the Holiday season and we should try to be kinder to each other.
Y'all have a GREAT holiday season and an even better 2007!
Grocery Store Check Out Lines
I can't stand people who go into the line that says 10 or less items and have double or triple that.
I buy organic catnip (right in my grocery store) and
take a big pinch of it, rub it between your fingers hard to release the fragrance, then rub it right into the post - rub in your case. The fresher, the better. I've never known a cat not to eat it.
sticker shock at the grocery store..sm
I wanna vomit as well and hubby really has no concept of how high food has gotten.....
Still have 2 kerosene heaters that I won't part with in the event of a gas outage....but K1 is $3.50 a gallon.....I know what you're talkin' about trying to fill the tank with oil (I'm originally from the NE). We've got enough quilts and long underwear to make it through...And, I found insulated coveralls, Carhart (your winter uniform) $7...I hit the consignment stores and lucked out on that one!
A lotta people take for granted things like heat and food and have never chopped wood. In any event,it's great to know that you're okay. Cat

does your local grocery store off meals you can
buy that you just have to pop in the oven for a little while..I did this last year because I was so busy.. and it was a hit, we had prime rib and fixins, they also have turkey/ham dinners, it might save time and the dinner I got was tasty....(Obviously I am not much of a cook) Just a different idea.
I looked for this in the grocery store last night
but couldn't find it. What brand is it?
Check out deli at grocery store. They will know

I get mine from a regular grocery store
What you want to buy is a "city" ham, not a "country" ham. City hams have less salt. Smithfield hams are good. I've also tried Cooks' and Hatfield. Don't know if they sell those in your part of the country.
I get a catalog called Burger's Smokehouse and those hams look absolutely fantastic. I would love to order from there but I'm strapped for cash right now.
The past 2 years, we have gotten a 1/2 pig from a local butcher. DH loves them. I'm not crazy about them.
When you fuse plastic grocery bags.
You have to be sure you are in an ventilated area because it has toxic fumes. I did mine outside because I have a plug in on the side of my house. You cannot get anymore ventilated that that. lol. I set my iron on 3 which is a medium setting, no steam and sandwich 1 bag folded twice (you need 8 layers) in between 2 pieces of regular typing/print paper. As I am ironing I just count to 20 or you can use a timer lol and then flip it over and iron the other side and count to 20. When you peal the paper off you will find that the plastic bag is stiff like paper and seems to be very durable. I cannot tear the things and I have tried. To me, it is the perfect liner for a car trash bag or even a bathroom trash bag. If one must use a plastic garbage bag for the kitchen (some garbage companies won't allow anything else but plastic bags) then maybe we can at least eliminate the amount we use.
