I took home ec too, but did not learn about canning. The Ball Blue Book gets my vote too...

Mine gets replaced every year also because the pages are all stuck together, stained, and otherwise show signs of major use. LOL. It is my bible for anything that can be canned or frozen or otherwise preserved.

My tomatoes do the same thing, and I had a friend tell me it was because I left the seeds in. ???? They taste the same.
This is the first year I have canned, although I grew up on canned food. I have done a boatload of tomatoes, some kraut, some dill pickles, some pickled beets. Those were store-bought canned beets so we will see how well they turn out. Also have frozen some corn, and now have more corn and some green beans to process.
Just a note, from what I have read if the food is low acid, such as beans or corn, you have to process it differently.
Good luck to ya!!

Canning tips.
I see that you'd like to learn to can. I do a lot of canning. In fact, I have a weird little room between my kitchen and dining room that I call "the pantry". We put shelves up on all the walls. One little shelf unit along one wall is my office. (I call the place the Pantroffice. :) The rest of the shelves, floor to ceiling, are filled with canned items. It's more of a hobby and a way to ensure that I know what is going into the cans. I can't say that it is necessarily cheaper than buying canned goods at a store.
If you are interested in learning, I highly recommend the latest edition of the Ball Blue Book. It costs about $5 or $6, and includes recipes and basic guidelines for canning. It's updated regularly, so find the most recent version. The Ball Blue Book will tell you when it's safe to can using a hot water bath, and when you must use a pressure canner. For years, I only did foods that required hot water canning, because that was the cheapest way to go. Several years ago, I invested in a very large pressure canner. Now I can can my own broths, soups, stews, and much more. It makes for quick foods at times.
It is something of a science, and lots of guidelines have changed from the days our grandmother's canned food. You certainly don't want to poison anyone! You need to know how to can the modern way.
If you want to know more, feel free to email.
Just a silly story about canning
When my brother and I were growing up we did not have a meal at home without applesauce. (He and I are both still a little that way) My mother decided to make homemade applesacue and can it to save money. Well canned applesauce certainly doesn't taste like White House. We hated it but we learned to love it. When we ate it all we begged for more but my mom hated the process of making it and canning it so much she refused to make anymore. When then had to go back to White House and it took forever before we learned to like it again. LOL!
Watermelon rind preserves? I'm canning like mad today!
Who has made this? I'm a canning fiend right now. I did 20 pounds of tomatoes last night and want to do the watermelon rind preserves. I found this recipe in my Ball Blue Book. I'm curious as to how they taste. I've got my watermelon rind doing a long soak in salted water right now. It sounds gnarly but hey, it's free, right?
I'm making some pumpkin/zucchini soup right now to freeze in my new chest freezer. It's to die for. Well, maybe. I've never used zucchini in it, but what doesn't taste good with a little zucchini?
and I balance just fine with foot pedal. I dont' sit here for eight hours on my ball. Sometimes I switch out my chair and my ball. Just depends on how my bottom is feeling. I too sometimes sit with my leg folded under my other leg while working, but that's not good for your veins. I have really bad vericose veins (that's another story!)
When you get sick, and you have to sell your house. I will listen to you.
When you have used up all the money in the bank, then I will listen to you.
By the way, do you know that Social Security was intended to be short term? Did you know that it is in danger of going bye-bye? And, oh yeah, it wasn't intended for the purposes it is being used for. How many years did you plan for exactly? My aunt had more than you mentioned and was considered ritch. Too bad she got sick the year before she died and lost it all, huh?
One episode in the hospital could wipe out everything you have saved all your life.
I really don't like "girly" movies either but for some reason I have to watch this one if I stumble on it while I'm "flicking" around. I always always always wind up crying like a big baby. It's such a beautifully done film. Just a classic.

Actually two (I think) the younger one is a bit of a hound dog. Both of mine are spoiled beyond belief. But, aren't pets to be spoiled? I have no children so my dogs are my babies. Dog spelled backward is God. Wonder why? Cute baby you have there. What is his/her name?
Look at those BLUE eyes!
Oh wow! I don't think I've ever met a dog with blue eyes before! They are beautiful!
Giants' blue
You know what confused me? I have always, always seen the Giants in blue, and to see them in a different color just rocked me! And then, of course, the coach was wearing the regular blue jacket, which was even more confusing! We were halfway through the first quarter before I stopped automatically looking at the blue jerseys to be the Giants!
Maybe not out of the blue. Maybe just finally had

Anyone move from a single family home to mobile home? sm
I own and live in a house in a midwest city in a bad neighborhood (wasn't that bad 11 years ago). I spent the day waiting for the plumber to come and jackhammer the foundation (slab house, no basement) to find a leaky pipe that is flooding my DD's bedroom. Last week, it was the electrician with quotes for costly repairs.
In the meantime, I've really been thinking about selling out and moving into a mobile home. Has anyone done this before? Is a mobile home in a decent park less of a hassle than a regular house? I'm so tired of cutting the grass and spending $$ to fix things and tired of old flooring and cabinets, etc., that are just too costly to replace. I'm single with no man to do these things for me and I can't afford a mortgage on a newer house in a good neighborhood. Some of the pictures I've seen of the mobile homes look really nice and modern on the inside.
Any advice and comments appreciated. Thanks!
Well I figure I can make my own hours & be home when the kids are home (sm)
I worked PT in an office for a while but spent most of my money on childcare in the summer. Full-time in an office was just a nightmare and I felt like I missed a whole year of my children's lives. I want to be in control of my schedule so that's why I'm looking into the cleaning thing. Never thought I would want to do that but live and learn! Some of the most intelligent people alive work as carpenters and similar things because they have learned what's really important in life. Whew....off my soapbox now :-) Good luck to you!

Black and blue toe - broken??
Ok, so I was walking from my daughter's room to my room last night and had this sharp pain in my 2nd toe on my left foot. I just shook it off as it didn't hurt that bad, but I woke up this morning and my toe is all bruised up with dark purple and redish shades on the bottom half. It doesn't really hurt unless I put direct pressure on it, but do you think this could be broken? Obviously, I would need an x-ray to know for sure, but does anyone have another explanation for why this would happen. I went ahead and buddy-taped it just in case and will continue to monitor for any changes, and will probably go to the dr on Monday if it gets worse, but this is just weird as it doesn't really feel broken??

Have a bad experience today? Why this out of the blue?
Guess what.. when all of our ancestors came here (except for Native American and British countries) they all spoke other languages and then learned English. So big deal. Who are "they" and why are you appearing so racist here? IMHO we should all be bilingual. In Europe the schools require children in school to learn English as well as their language, and many people speak multiple language. Some of our own children in the US can't even speak English and they come from English speaking homes. So, what's with the comment here? What are you really trying to start some kind of bigoted conversation? Yes, this is America. Learn English. But nothing wrong with speaking Spanish too. Or Indian. Or Chinese or anything!

Turns out my memory in my computer was corrupted, then I took it out and they sent new memory and turns out the motherboard went bad, so it had to be replaced. Might be your motherboard, hope its under warranty! But try removing the memory from under your computer.
