I thought Medicare started at age 65 no matter what year you were born.

At least that's how I understood what I read on the Medicare web site. Sure hope I'm not mistaken.

Am I wrong? I always thought that Medicare and Medaid is only
for retired people?
Who qualifies?
Thanks.

I knew it was a matter of time before Philly started spewing about sm
how good she has it and how dumb other people are. *rolling eyes*
The only panda, I hear, born in the US this year is in Atlanta, yeh!
I do not have membership but used to live within walking distance of the zoo and signed up to volunteer when we originally got the pandas so able to get in before the crowds to see them. Immediate fall in love situation. If you are able to get the AJC or Atlanta TV channels, they have their panda weekly exams and it is a big awwwwwwwwww for me. Can hardly wait to see her. What a present for us all!
Just in the last year started taking 1/2 of those
OTC sleep aids - I know, I know you are not supposed to take regulrly but gads!!  I have never slept so good - didn't even realize I was not sleeping well - now - age 54 sleeping like a baby every night and never get sleeping during the day, wake up perky - totally a different experience for me!
this year at our e.school they started a new thing...
the principal is a young hip guy...his new idea is called the "blue team", when a child is caught doing something "excellent", could be anything from getting along, teamwork, perfect paper..anything...the teacher writes a happy gram, sends him to the principal and he draws blue dots on one of their fingernails and is now "in the BLUE TEAM" ..its so corny, but eventually every child in the school is slowly recognized...its corny for sure but it gives them something to work towards.  my little kindergarten boy..who can be so difficult just thought it was the coolest thing ever.   my 3rd grade daughter got in at the beginning of the year and i really didnt think my son would, but just 2 weeks ago he did...he was so proud.  wouldnt let me wash his finger that whole night...its just simple things.....
If your mom and dad just divorced this year, have you ever thought of depression? sm
Maybe your dad is going through a real hard adjustment to his new life and could use a little help or boost from you instead of a cold shoulder. Sounds to me like he might just be in some major depression as his life has had a drastic change. Reach out to him and help him in his time of need. Sure he is an adult, but everyone can walk on hard times with major traumatic events going on in their life and he may just lack desire to care due to his depression.
My 19-year-old daughter wants to join the Army. I'm very scared at the thought. Any advice out th
Before the Iraq war, I would have been more excited that she wanted to do something positive with her life for a change, but this thought is scary as we know people that have lost their children in the war. I know in some ways this could turn her life around and be what she needs as she is very immature and is going down the wrong road, but are there other alternatives.  A lot of people tell us it's still a good time for kids. Any thoughts out there?
You should ask Medicare or

Social Security.

Medicare is such a morass of regulations and can dos and can't dos, it's scary.  I found the above site, which seems to be pretty helpful.

I think this entry addresses what you're looking for.  Medicare has limited options, but you should also look into Medicaid, which is administered through your state.

My medicare will kick in before
hubbys, born in the 40s mine starts at age 67. He does not get Medicare when I do, only if he were retired and/or health issues were such that he was unable to work. If you go on dialysis no matter the age, you automatically are put on Medicare but just because a husband retires or vice versa does not benefit the other spouse.
Medicare is first insurance
Any of the insurance  plans I have seen only go to age 65 even if you are working.  They might work hand in hand with Medicare as your supplement but this is often expensive unles your employer continues to pay for it.   They will use Medicare as the primary  and your other insurance as the secondary.
Medicare people - Have great insurance now- do I have to
take Medicare exclusively once I reach retirement age? My husband is younger and I hope to continue to work past retirement age myself (hoping to drop at my desk, so to speak) but his is great because union- he pays nothing for his insurance and all medically related issues are really dirt cheap for us. I would love to be able to stay on his insurance without Medicare- is this allowed?
Medicare questions for helping my relative
I have a relative who wants to live alone although she really needs some basic care such as grocery buying, food prepared, light cleaning in her home, going to doctors appointments, the very basics of everyday life. I will be able to pay through her bank what she needs for lights, cable and things like that (she has gotten to where she cannot make out a check because of tremors in her hands). She went to live with another relative and it has not worked out at all. She has been on her own for years and wants to be that way again as much as possible. Is there anyone out there who knows what Medicare does to help out the elderly and give me any information you might have.
Haven't started shopping yet, but have started saving $$$
Don't have an awful lot yet, but both hubby and I are doing it (separate accounts) so we should have a good amount when we combine. My goal is to start shopping in September after my daughter's birthday and finish by Thanksgiving. That's my goal. I have never reached it! Maybe this year!
And FYI, the thread we are posting in right now was one I started, you started the earlier one. nm

Medicaid for poorer folks, Medicare for retirees
But no matter your age if the person is on dialysis you are automatically put on Medicare.
I have a question about Social Security and Medicare for people who don't work (sm)

My SIL has worked exactly 3 (count them) 3 months in her entire lazy life.  They took bankruptcy a couple of years ago, of course she wasn't going to go to work and help out then because she said "it's not my fault we are in this mess."  Now my brother is coming up to within 10 years of retirement and actually has problems with arthritis that may cause him to have to retire sooner.  She insists that she should be given a social security check when she "retires" and that she should be eligible for medicare when my brother retires.  She is several years younger than him and I tried to tell her she will have to get out and get private insurance for herself until she is of age.  She insists the government "owes this to her".  I would like to string her up to the highest tree, but I am told that is illegal also.

Am I crazy?  She certainly can't be put on Medicare just because her husband is eligible can she?

I think she just figures she will either live on his SS benefits or kill him off with the side jobs in addition to his FT job he has been trying to do to keep her in the style she wants to become accustomed and then be eligible for widow's benefits.

I guess I really don't understand the SS and Medicare issues, just hoping someone could shed some light on this.

She simply REFUSES to work regardless of how much they have needed the money and/or benefits.  Can't watch your soaps if you work all day and that is very important to her.  GRRRR.  Sorry to vent.  Will go mind my own business now.

I haven't started yet, but have started my lists.
The only reason I haven't started yet is because of $$$. But I have started some good lists for the kids and the DH. I actually have some good ideas for him this year (he is hard to buy for).

I'm like you, I love Christmas but hate the commercialism of it. We were at Costco a while back looking for Halloween costumes and they already had their Christmas stuff out. They always make me feel like I'm already late on my shopping!

I may do a lot of online shopping this year. It's easier with little ones. My 2yo is more aware this year so taking him with me to buy his own presents is out. Darn!

It always seems that Halloween (my favorite) takes forever to get here, but once it's over, then the holiday rush is on.

Happy Holidays everyone!
Bigger issue - a 16 year old living withi a 29 year old and liability
Are you still not responsible for him until he is 18, how can he tell you where he will live?  Unless he emancipates himself and he does something wrong, can they go against you since you are his mother and legally responsible for him?  I worry more about him living with a 29 year old sister rather than returning a house key to me that is a bigger issue.
My 14-year-old is going to be a mother-in-law (so funny) if you google it and 11-year-old daughter

Wonder if they would take my first born?
I was gonna hold back, I think someone above said 20%, but after seeing your post may hold back the 30. I have already taken money out of an account to redo my house where I live, about $20 thousand (that counts as income)and with this upcoming closing, I will just set the 30% aside. I detest the IRS but also fear because I do not want them showing up at my home!
I was born 10-26-62, ...
dh was born 10-03-63
My dad always used to say I was born in the -(sm)-
wrong century! Actually, I would like to travel back in time to around 1915, so I could attend the Panama Pacific Exposion that was held in San Francisco. The only remnant of that amazing, year-long event is the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District.
Well, lets see, I was born in
1943 so I think probably around before most on these posts and lived through a myriad of history and information. What I said was if Merck did not make the profits, another drug company would. That is all. Millions, trillions made all the time on drugs. I am sure all pharmaceutical companies lobby for their drugs. If not 1 drug company, just will be another. I have no children that would require this and I do not live in Texas but if they are going to be mandatory in Texas, probably coming your way before long.
the baby did ask to be born

Born in Korea, but.....
I would say the guy definitely Americanized during his 15 years here. After all, he spent 2/3rds of his life here. Now honestly, look at our society over the years - what is more American than using a gun to solve your problems? Gun violence is NOT part of the Korean culture.
No, not illegal, born here but
from the getto part of town. Don’t assume about things, ok? We are talking about a person who has never held a regular job, has lived off welfare, gotten food stamps and besides that, it is no where close to slave labor. OMG. She has been around so long she does what is the basics and then watches a lot of televison. Slave, she usually calls me and asks if I have anything for her to do.
why could not have I been born rich
instead of goodlooking?
for me, they have to be born 1966 or later...

Born and raised here but.......
I have never had sweetbreads or like you call it organ meat, not in my lifetime either unless starving. I know of no one in my family nor have I ever met that eats such. Oh BTW, my big chain grocery carries liver (as I suppose most stores in the US do) but have never seen the other organ meats you speak of so I guess in the south maybe not so popular?
Nov. 22, 1990 my son was born. sm
He was due on that date, kind of unusual for a baby to actucally come on their due date. I went into labor about 10:00p.m. on Wednesday night while watching "It's a Wonderful Life". So, labor all night long with really bad back labor. Found out about 5:15a.m. he was feet first (went to the doc on Tuesday and he was head first). So had a c-section and he arrived at 6:13a.m. I didn't get the turkey and all the trimmings but something so much better. Of course his b-day doesn't always fall on Thanksgiving but it did yesterday. It was fun visiting with all the family and hearing their take on that day. My mom's first thought was who will make the broccoli casserole? LOL!
She is just beautiful and was born on my b-day
I have vacationed at Myrtle Beach many many times. I had a friend from high school move there a couple of years ago and she loves it there. Being a resort town you just have to deal with a lot of tourists certain times of the year and right after graduation look out for the teenagers. That is where I went right after graduation (and hey, I didn't end up in jail! LOL)
Thanks - I love it too - was born there sm
My parents moved to Jacksonville but I still go to Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach almost every year.
It says she was Brazilian born - nm

I was not born rich but over the years
I have had untold wealth given to me, quite a bit. I think where this comes from is the fact that I always and I mean always think about the underdog. I give from my heart to things whenever I can, when I hear a story that I feel I should try to give, animals, people in distress, you name it and if the story says I should try to help a particular cause, I do. I really have tried to impress upon my children and grandchildren IF you give from the heart, it so much comes back to you. I have not run out of money giving, in fact just the opposite, had wealth literally fall in my hands and I think this is why. What a person needs to understand is I give because I really want to, not because I have to and I never look for a return but there always is. I cannot count the times when giving and here money comes back. This is how I try to live my life.
you'd bet your first born on an anonymous post

I think YOU might be ill and need a therapist.  I'm not that poster but I think your response here is assumptive and presumptive and you *seem* so much smarter than this.....you cannot assume anything on a public board online....and you said YOU'D BET YOUR FIRST BORN on your thoughts about that poster.....I think you need to recheck your priorities...........

JMO..........

Born and raised in Ewa Beach,
have not been home in almost 21 years. I think I like Bermuda better.
depends on how the kids were born...

How do I know this?  My hubby and I have Hep C (in remission) and our child was born via vertical C-section (she was in a posterior-transverse lie, almost breech).  She never got the hepatitis because she was not born vaginally.

There's so much online to back up what I'm saying, just check it out - Google for the issue.  She has been tested twice and is totally negative.  *happy*

BTW, specialist hepatologist told me I'll never die from this disease, I have that mild a case my entire life (since my 20s)...and have remained at Stage 1 all these years....

I, too was born in the 40s. Sure you heard of disrespect and

bad kids and teenagers, but there it was never, ever to the degree we see it today, and all sorts of new problems like the drug addiction, animal cruelty, arson, carjacking drive by shootings,  constant robberies, etc. In my home town a chain of convenience stores was hit about 5 times in the last few weeks. They say they caught the four who were doing it. Also on today's news was the report they caught the murderer they have been looking for. . a youth who killed someone in my home town over drugs. We had our problems back then, but nothing like this. It is totally out of hand.

Was born and raised in WV. Now I live
just across the state line in VA. Am still a WV girl at heart. Can't think of a better song to sing. Would rather sit in the sun as opposed to raking leaves though! LOL!
Oh, so it's better to abort a child then let it be born

You have a right to have an abortion obviously, but I don't think you have much room to judge someone else accidentally getting pregnant since you obviously accidentally got pregnant too.  I guess you're judging her decision to give birth to the baby then - not the fact that she got pregnant.  interesting.

This reminds me of one of my sister's friends.  She is a catholic (no offense to catholics - it's just what she is), and she has had 3 or 4 abortions because she cheats on her husband and doesn't want "2 different kids from 2 different men."  Yeah, she judges people that have kids from 2 different guys, yet she just aborts babies left and right to avoid having the kids! The interesting thing is she just had a baby that was supposed to be her husband's but the kid looks NOTHING like him.  She disgusts me.  I can't figure out why my sis is still friends with her!

I was so tired after my children were born (sm)
I wanted to be left alone because my house and myself were a mess. I was exhausted and did not have enough help from family, but the kind of mess you don't want your friends seeing. I should clarify that I had a c-section each time, so was recovering from that. I would maybe bring her food and give it to whoever answers the door with a note that says "I know you're still exhausted - I'm here if you need me - call me when you're up to it." And leave it at that. Just be patient. Unfortunately some of my friends abandoned me too and a few weeks later when I needed them, they were unavailable.
There was a baby born in Philly

Whole family born in Cleveland but me - sm
I was born in SE PA, Media, PA (45 mins from Philly). My whole life there, got, "you're not from around here", sorry yes I am, but family is not. I picked up some of their accent growing up obviously. Moved to Virginia 10 years ago, boy I had a hard time with some of the people here (my 1 neighbor was terrible), really thick accents and hard to understand, but they are few luckily. Most everyone here sounds the same to me, maybe a slight drawl but nothing major, my friends in PA though say I have picked up an accent from being here so long. I have no idea.
Yes I am, born and raised in Kentucky and
