I think that...

...if you had had my experience you would not be saying this. That's all I can really say. It's the ultimate act of sisterhood to accept my experience. I wonder why you are not doing it now.
I certainly wouldn't wish those symptoms on anyone, not even for the satisfaction of being understood, so I do hope you are able to get through menopause easily, in the way that feels best to you, without any sort of help or intervention.
But you simply cannot make generalizations about what's appropriate for someone else on the basis of your own experience, or for that matter, on the basis of something Dorothy Dinnerstein or Barbara Ehrenreich wrote, or any other author of some 80s tome (& believe me, I've read them all), about feminism.
I will say it again: The Body is the Feminine. For me to deny the experience of my body by not availing myself of something to make life livable would have been me doing myself an injustice. Not every drug invented to alleviate pain is an attempt to repress women. You sound, & I say this kindly, a little shrill, like someone for whom the pendulum of newfound feminism has not yet swung the other direction. I think when you are further along in your feminism you will realize this.
My femaleness did not cause my suffering, my symptoms did. When this became apparent, I was able to get help, & I didn't suspect the inventors of venlafaxine to be attempting to repress me in any way. I felt calmer & more like myself than I had in almost 4 years & was really grateful -- & I daresay -- finally able to appreciate the magic of menopause.
