I think it's up to you.

I had long hair right up until 1985. The day before the big Live-Aid concert in Philly, I cut it all off... seriously, cut it all off. It was buzzed like a U.S. Marine. We had tickets to the concert, and it was going to be hot, so I wanted to survive without itchy, long hair on my neck. After that, I never grew it longer than my shoulders, but mostly, it only grew to ear-length after that.

Until this year.

For the past three years, I let it grow out. I'm 46, and I've never dyed my hair. But gray is starting to come in now, and I wanted to grow my hair for Locks of Love and donate un-dyed hair to them. (They do take dyed hair. I just wanted to give mine while it was still undyed.) Just about a month ago, I finally cut 12 inches of hair and donated it. And I was very, very glad to see it go.
Like you, I felt sloppy with my hair hanging. I'd pin it up, tie it back, all sorts of things, but it was a lot of work. And I have very thick, straight hair. On me, I did think that the fine lines around my eyes and my sagging chin were accentuated by the long, hanging hair. I really hated it. My hair is just below my ears now, a very sweet, kicky style that is easy to deal with, and I'm getting tons of compliments. The only comments I got on my long hair were about how long it was. "You're hair is getting so long!" No one ever said, "It looks good long."

On me, it didn't work. But if you like it, I don't see why you can't keep it that way. Why not go to a stylist and talk about what you can do with your longer hair, how to style it, or how to soften it around your face. Really live with it and try it out for a while. But don't let the cats tell you what to do. Who are they, anyway? If after you've tried it, you really don't like it, it's no big deal to cut it. Or, you can let it grow until you can donate it to Locks of Love!
