that it is none of her business. You are the parents. I know that if my mom would have suddenly stopped doing a little something for my birthdays at any age when I was still living there (even at 17 and I told her I didn't want a party) that I would have been heartbroken and felt like she must not really care about it anymore. I'm 31 years old now and every single year my mom still makes me a cake and calls me on the phone to sing me "Happy Birthday." I laugh and pretend it is silly, but I love it and would feel terrible if she forgot or just didn't find the time to do this. I think your mother-in-law had her kid(s) and had the chance raise them the way she wanted to and should leave you to your own decisions. I, of course, am showing some of my harbored bad feelings for my mother-in-law in this post, but, for the most part, is really what I think.
