I see by your birthdate that you weren't trying to raise a family during the Regan years -sm

We were lucky, my DH never lost his job, but the town we lived in had about a 75% foreclosure rate with vacant houses and most of the businesses closed down.
We ate a lot of Hamburger Helper, mac & cheese, Rice A Roni, and Top Ramen. My 3 kids got their clothes and shoes at thrift stores, I went without. DH went without. We would have qualified for food stamps, but the state couldn't afford to have a program. Oh, and after Regan failed to get the school lunch program dumped completely he wanted ketchup declared a vegetable.
There was no question of me working - first there were no jobs, and second anything I earned plus some would have gone to daycare. Doctor and dentist visits were just about nonexistent because we couldn't afford insurance.
After that hellish 8 years things slowly got better until W, and wow, it's like Deja Vu all over again! Ain't it great?

If the mom was so bad, why did ANS let her raise Daniel for the first 6-7 years of his life?

I am like yu, but my family moved every 3 years.
It was tough as a kid to grow up like that, but due to exentuating circumstances, I have moved my kids a lot, too. It stinks!
I'm telling you after years of living with the same family - they figure things out! sm
For example, he knows that if I am going somewhere with the kids, he probably can't go, but if he sees that I am alone and pick up my keys, he heads for the door with that look in his eyes! It's like he is trying his best to convey a telepathic message - "I want to go!!"
You certainly weren't lying after
.
All we can do is speculate since we weren't there
Whatever happened or didn't happen, a young child is dead. Of course I've heard the opposite that he was loved very much by his family and that he was very close to his father. Again, that's speculation on my part since I don't know them personally.
They said they weren't available in my area...
I don't understand that at all!
Again!?!? Weren't they recalled once before during the
Nutro *Max-Cat* used to be one of the *good* varieties of cat food. (Had been recommended when I adopted my 1st Persian, who got diarrhea with canned food or fish-flavored dry food).
Oy, VEY.
And I bet the divorces weren't her fault, either.

I'm concerned that you were typing & weren't watching your 6 yr old.
I had that problem with a neighbor, only they weren't caring
constantly barking. I would put water out for the dog and sometimes feed the dog because it was being neglected. Finally, when no one was looking I had the dog come with me and I took it over to my moms house and found the dog a really loving home. My bad? I don't care, I knew the dog was being well taken care of. The lady I gave him too just doted on him and he was no longer neglected.
Even though a dog is being fed and given water doesn't mean it isn't being neglected. Animal neglect is a form of abuse. If you call anyone, don't call Animal Control. Call the Humane Society or some other entity who can take the animal so it won't end up being put to sleep. It's not the dogs fault that the owner neglects him.
I don't think she was being curt. We've all eaten when we weren't hungry. SM
I don't think diet pills are the way to go. And I could never understand paying big bucks to Jenny Craig or NutriSystem for food when you can learn to eat healthy all on your own. I agree exercising and portion control are the way to go. I also don't think cutting carbs entirely out is the answer either. Carbs are brain food and energy food. Sure, you don't need go overboard on carbs, but your body does need them.
I used to do diet pills and stuff like that, but I had trouble with my heart racing (as high as 130 bpm!) and my BP skyrocketed and then I had a full blown panic attack because I freaked that something was wrong with my heart. After I finally got my panic attack under control, I realized that I was just poisoning myself with diet pills and diet soda. Even though I had lost weight on them, I cut it all out of my diet. I will not ingest artificial sweeteners at all. I do have an occasional Coke - Regular Not Diet, but mostly water and juices. I've lost about 30 pounds in the last year.
I need to exercise more, though and I just bought the Core Rhythms DVD. I haven't gotten it yet, but it's on the way and I can't wait. I love to dance and I think this might be a good way to get into exercise. I've got about 40 more pounds to lose, but I'm getting there. The big battle for me is fast food. It's so convenient and easy and when I'm getting the kids something, it's easy to just order me a little something, just this once...
I used to be slim and trim too, back in the day. You know, before the kids and 17 years of marriage. In the 80s, I was an aerobics queen! Remember when it was really popular? I had leotards with matching leg warmers and sweat bands, and had my ponytail on the side of my head! I look back now and it was hilarious!
well maybe if health care providers weren't flooded
you wouldn't have such a long wait time and wouldn't need more doctors. I would hope the government would crack down on such things like smoking and fast food if it took over the health care industry.
She did NOT raise that boy the first 6 to 7
years of his life. That is a lie.
How much does she need to raise?
Did you raise them on your own
or is there someone else to share the blame? Kids don't spoil themselves.
I do not think it is appropriate for any man to raise
If the child is that bad, send her to counseling. Writing a report brings out all of the reasons the child has done the wrong. Unless she's breaking the law, man-handling is not on the top of my list of punishments! I disagree with your statements, and I disagree with blank rooms. I think talking things out and finding out the root of the problem is the answer, not spanking or punishments that require imprisonment. Obviously, the OP didn't feel the child had done that much wrong or the friend wouldn't have been allowed to spend the night. That's all I have to say on this issue, which is ridiculous in this day and age of molesters. Oh, and I was paddled on my bare bottom at age 10.... No, I wasn't too fond of men. This issue is no different than a wife beater or child molester.....
asking for raise
I would just make contact with the person in charge of raises, and present your case (not from a 'need' perspective, but from a deserve perspective). Just form it as a request and touch on your high points!!
raise
It justs seems like with the cost of everything going up. Also we get the best with working at home, but they do not pay vacation, benefits or anything else. Why woudl it kill them to give a raise.
would rather raise 5 girls than 1 boy..sm
When boys grow up and become men, their *toys* become MUCH more expensive than girls (think boats, cars, motorcycles, ATVs, planes, trains, etc.).
I had such success with my girl that I want more girls *lol*
Looking for best place to raise a kid
I like where I live...but after a week from H E double toothpicks last week, I really feel that a bit of distance between myself and any family members would be better. Long story short, you think your family will be there to help when you need it, but instead all you get is beaten down and end up feeling bad and having to deal with your crises by yourself anyway (it's the ONLY reason I moved back to this area a couple of years ago).
Currently, I live in the deep south and my city has an excellent !!! school system, but I know there are other good school systems out there. So, here are some of what I would like in addition to a good school system.
Near water and mountains (could be lake or ocean, or state park), easy access to public transportation (in case my car breaks down), a good YMCA or city recreation center.
I've been looking at a borough just north of Philly, a couple of small cities in Virginia, a city north of Denver, some areas in North Carolina. I would like to avoid the west coast unless it's somewhere in Washington State or Oregon. I've considered the Reno area, but I've never been there and I don't know what the schools are like.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Anyone who never has to raise their voice to get (sm)
I have an 8 year old an almost 11 year old and my husband is gone a lot. They are basically good children, never get in trouble at school except occasionally for talking, don't really do anything malicious or mean. But sometimes the bicker incessantly with each other and many times I feel as if I have to tell them repeatedly to do something and finally have to get a mad voice before they listen -then their feelings are hurt because I raised my voice. Right now my son is crying because I told him he has to help clean the house before he can have friends over this morning (he is almost 11). On school days they don't want to help because they have been at school all day. On weekends they don't want to help because those are their only days off. I am making them help even though they don't want to, but why the tears? It makes me feel like a mean mom, but I can't do it all myself and don't feel I should have to.
Did you see the part about how she was going to raise them?
She was bragging that she does not receive welfare, but then they have admitted that she receives food stamps and two of the older children get SSI for disabilities. But, she said her source of income to raise them would be her student loans!
I would raise some caine, she is not - sm
abiding by the rules. I would either (1) give her a warning and inform her that you will revoke car privileges for two weeks if she comes home late again (3x and you are out basically), and if she wants to go anywhere she needs to get herself there and back by the appointed time, or she won't be allowed to go anywhere, or (2) revoke them now since she has already broken the rules 2 x.
If I knew I was going to be late I had to call to let my parents know, they did not care that it was 12:30 a.m. and I was to be home by 1, I was to call no matter what. I think I only had to do that once, roads were icy, and was not about to speed home to be on time. They were fine with it. Considering I was 16/17 when I was a senior my parents were pretty lenient, as long as I told then were I was, who I was with, and be home by the appointed time, 10 on school nights, 12 or 1 on weekends depending on what I was doing, dates were midnight generally, special dances 1 a.m. except for the Prom, got to okay to be out all night for that one. I was close to being late a few times due to haveing too good a time on dates, so makes you wonder what your daughter is up to. Just because she is 18 it is not a magic number of being allowed to do whatever she wants. She is still in school and you are still her parent no matter how "responsible" she seems to be for her age. You cannot be her friend, you are her mother.
I would raise 5 boys to 1 girl!
Girls cost too much.
I did not raise a debate, criticize the OP, or anything

Love Raise the Red Lantern
So few people enjoy foreign films - and I just love them. I want the Chinese, Indian, Japanese, European, Latin American - all of them. Hardly ever find a dud. I've seen every foreign film at Blockbuster at least once.
Have you watched the Red, White, and Blue triology by the French director? Can't think of his name right now, but all 3 films are simply superb and although each is separate, there is a common thread that he brings together at the end of the third movie.
Or they want to raise them so they can be killed in a senseless war!!
Not that I think it is good to kill fetuses either ... but why don't these people see their lack of logic!
And as far as the stem cells and embryos ... why don't they fight to stop allowing people to fertilize and freeze them to begin with (or more than they will surely use)?!!
Family is great but I am never back in my hometown where family is... So I always have extended fami
You can always pick your friends your stuck with your family. An Xmas for me is where my husband and kids come home to. It is what you make it!
Which are easier to raise -- boys or girls?
I was always told boys. I had 2 girls and uff-dah what a hormonal nightmare. Now I have a teenage boy and those hormones are at least as bad. Prolly worse.
let's raise the flag *ROFL*.....lucky you....
It figures! I just found out they're going to raise my
29% next month! (And I always pay on time and far more than the minimum.) Well forget all that! I'm going to take the money out of what's left in my bank account (SAME bank, only savings only earns a measly .03% interest!) pay off the Mastercard, and just close the d@mned thing. I've had it with Wall Street, I've had it with negligent banks, and I've had it with greedy credit card companies. They can all go under for all I care, I'm going to pay cash from now on, and just keep a checking account for the debit/ATM card. The economy, banking system, and stock market never have, and never WILL, work for the 'little guy'. We were fools to fall for all that hooey. Sure hope the IRS doesnt mind the IOU they're gonna get from me this year, cause what goes around, comes around.
Summer. Friends or family? Family. Tired or Awake?

its better to raise kids in a happy divorced home
No where either. My mother didn't raise any foolish kids. LOL nm

Is it just me or does the fuel surcharge for speeders sound like another way to raise taxes? nm

Big difference between family values and family jewels, eh? lol
LOL. I love this show. I think Gene and Shannon and her sister are a riot! What characters. It really is amazing to me the kids seem so laid back and so normal. They seem like great kids.
Does your family still do the early Sunday dinner w/family?

My feelings; people shacking up together for years and years
and then all of a sudden deciding to get married don't need a thing, obviously. A shower should not even be given. I lived with my now husband a while (nowadays who doesn't!) before we married and I also had been married before years ago but he was not....so of course HIS mom wanted a shower. I told her absolutely not unless it was just the immediate family, his mom, sisters, etc, more like a celebration/get together. And so that's what we did. Showers are tacky, period. Unless it's a couple of young kids getting married straight out of the house and that doesn't happen much anymore.
Been with a man 13 years older, now with a man 4 years younger.
Younger is better, at least in my case ;)
Sorry, meant 75 cents. Still, that was years and years ago.

I studied to be a scopist years and years ago
Back in the early 1990s I took a course called Note reader Scopist. They read court reporter notes (those long skinny papers that looks like a cash receipt) and types them into documents. I had found the course through something called At Home Professions but just didn't finish it because it was too expensive for me. But I am familiar with them and even found my book from the first course I took. Looking back I think it would have been a blast if I had kept up with it.
It is definitely legitimate. A lot has changed since the early 90s, so I'm not too familiar with the industry now. I do remember what was really weird was it didn't take a lot for me to learn it. For instance I could look at a line of court notes and see something that looked like: NV p srn - and I seemed to know exactly what it said. Just weird. My DH used to say that I understood it because I was an alien and my ship crashed in Roswell. HA HA HA Anyway...that's what I know about it. But if you Google note reader scopist or at home professions i'm sure you could probably find a lot of info.
I have been vegetarian on/off for 35 years, was vegan for about 5 years sm
not that hard. Right now, I am having so many issues with food allergies and celiac disease, having to give up nightshade veggies...nothing left to eat. I am eating some meat now, but not when the gastroparesis sets in!
Being vegan is not hard...unless you are a celiac. This is how I figured out the celiac part because so many of the meat analogs and vegan packaged foods use gluten for the protein and I got really sick from it. I gave up all the premade things and the whole grains with gluten and I was fine.
There is vegan and then there is VE-GAN. By definition, vegans don't wear, use or consume anything that is derived of animals...no leather shoes, most shampoos and toothpastes are off the list, as are deodorants. No wool or silk. Anything with soap usually has animal byproducts. It is very involved and rather difficult to do.
Giving up meat, eggs and dairy is no big deal, except for cheese. You hear that ad about "comfort proteins" in a baby formula and there is such a thing. Mother's milk, be it human, cow, goat, whatever...contains a chemical that triggers the release of endorphins in the brain so that feeding feels good in more ways than one. The purpose of this is ensure that the nursed young want to nurse and thrive. Human milk has a lot of these, so does cow's milk and cow juice triggers the same reaction in the adult human brain. Cheese is concentrated milk and therefore these chemicals are also concentrated. As a result, cheese is an addictive substance. This is the hardest thing to give up when going vegan. Vegan cheese substitutes are nasty and they don't melt. If a dairy-free cheese melts, it contains casein, an animal protein and not vegan.
I studied this years and years and years ago
Most definitely is legitimate. In the late 1980s I studied to be a note reader scopist through a group called At Home Professions. I loved it, but unfortunately could not continue due to no funds. It was reading the court reporters notes which looked like a grocery receipt with a bunch of letters scattered on it. The weird thing was I found it extremely easy. For instance I would see a line that looked like: av e cr, and for some reason I would know what it said. My DH told me that's because I'm an alien and my ship landed in Roswell. HA HA. Well I know that a lot has changed, after all it's been over 20 years since I took the first course and know a lot of it is computerized now, but it is most definitely legitimate and I've heard people like to do it. I think I remember one of the courses was in medical terminology and another course was in legal terminology. Should be able to find a lot of it on google, or maybe go to your local college if they offer it and talk to an instructor.
This has happened for years and years, where have you been?
Frank Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles, and on and on. This person is acting very normal like the age she is. You would have to have been under a rock to think differently, like this was an abnormal behavior....
Lost my mom 23 years ago and dad 18 years ago.
My son was not even 1 when my mom died....she was only 50. My dad died at age 59. So even though I feel your pain....I would have been very grateful to have them into their 80's. I guess we take what we get and be thankful. Sometimes it is hard though.
I was married for 13 years and 2 years
after my divorce I met the most incredible man. He was also divorced, we both have 2 kids, and though we are not married, we have been together for 9 years. They are still out there, you may have to go through a few marginal ones before you find him, but they are out there and available.
family
No she did not have Daniel throughout his whole life but there were times when he shouldn't have been with her but her mother would not take him without money. She was living in a motel with a bfriend and Daniel. She was broke and it was not pretty she had some really rough times and she was not always the "playboy" girl she worked in some really raunchy clubs.
I dont know about a brother but it has been a long long time age I do remember meeting a "sister" once and lots of different "boyfriends". There was always someone with their hand out.
I give her mother the benefit of the doubt but look at how things are going and what her mother is doing. There have been lots of back and forths in Vergie and Nicki's relationship and none of it has EVER appeared loving. Nicki was not innocent but I think she grew up and moved on with her life and her mother still wants to talk about her little Vicki.
No one is perfect not me, not you neither was Nicki, but her past was her past and she needs to be laid to rest, she went to extremes to establish her wishes let her be. Nicki is gone but the baby is here and needs to be sheltered from all this hoopla!!!
when it is a family, the family tends to think
since an addition is being made to a family during pregnancy, a lot of families see themselves as pregnant - as one - as a whole unit...nothing wrong with it - actually makes the entire family participate in it, which is a GREAT thing............not like the men of the 1950s who went to work and the moms did absolutely everything else....I like men/families who WANT to take part and be involved.
Old fashioned or not - I prefer the way the men participate today in all of it..........makes for better communication and all know what's going on in the family....
FYI to all, keep your old fashioned minds open because a closed mind will make you old WAY before your time.
There are 4 in our family and we each sm
get to pick one definite thing to do. My hubby says that is his pick. LOL
