6 pumpkin pies, 2 vinegar pies and a chocolate chiffon pie sm
So now that I have caught your attention...just what is a vinegar pie, you ask.
In the south, they are referred to as transparent pie. You will sometimes hear it called sweet and sour pie. It is good real cider vinegar, the kind with the mother at the bottom, brown sugar, white sugar, butter and eggs, a bit of flour. It is like water when you put in the shell. You bake it for an hour and it comes out about like the goo in a pecan pie with no nuts. It is not sour a bit, nor is it sickly sweet. It is sweet with a bit of an apple bite. The kids love it and when younger son is home for the holidays, he will devour one of them at a sitting. He literally comes in and sees the vinegar pie, takes one and says: So...what is everyone else having? The other son won't eat pumpkin or vinegar, so he has the chocolate chiffon. The rest of us are pumpkin eaters.
I think we've become a disposable society
Perhaps it comes from having too much.
People used to get by with just a few clothes, that had to last. Now, many people need more than 1 walk in closet to house all their clothes. Something tears, ach, chuck it out, there's plenty more to wear. Even shoes aren't made sturdy, anymore. Used to be you got shoes repaired, re-soled, re-heeled, re-tipped. You don't see many shoe repair shops any more. We used to have one in about every mall.
pies
What a great idea! I'm making both pumpkin and pecan pie tomorrow evening. I love Kaluha (sp.? too lazy to get up and look at the bottle), so will try that. Don't think we have any brandy, but that sounds good too. Will definitely tell my son, who also loves pecan pie. Thanks.
Pies and deserts
What kind of pies and deserts do you have for Turkey Day? Home made or frozen or store bought?
Me - Homemade pecan and pumpkin. Completely from scratch, even roast the pumpkin. Must have real whipped cream to go along with it too. We are going to my MIL/FIL for the holiday and they are only having apple and cherry pie. I just couldn't bear the thought of no pumpkin or pecan so I'm bring those along with me.
Repeating coffeecake, poundcake, pies, anything w/o chocolate or frostings.

Pans
Don't waste money on All-Clad, buy the Kirkland tri-ply bottomed ones at Costco! They are hands down the BEST! I saved one All-Clad, gave my Calphalon, etc. to my son, copper pots to my daughter's friend, and kept my cast iron chicken fryer (gotta have it) and cast iron pizza pan (Lodge). You don't need a stone wtih the cast iron pizza pan. Best pizza I ever had comes from that pan. I liked Calphalon, but hated cleaning it. If someone accidentally "dishwashers" it there are horrible marks all over it (like white haze on top of the dark gray) and they can't hold a candle to Kirland's copper/aluminum and whatever bottom core. These pans rock. I kept all my LA Creseut, of course, the roasters cook better than a crock pot and save money on energy because they retain so much heat. You can turn off a dish an hour ahead and they finish cooking on their own. Now I am really hungry, so have to go and find something to eat. In case you can't guess I love all things FOOD including pots and pans! Hope you get some and get the best ones you can afford. I had to wait years and years of my life for the ones I have. My first ones were castoffs from everybody and they were okay, but now I have the ones that I love and that work best!
I need new pots and pans.
Does anyone have some kind that they really like? Thanks.
pots and pans
I bought my husband Wolfgang Puck's Cafe Collection last year for Christmas - he loves them! Got them at Sam's Club for 100.00. Heavy weight, even cooking, glass lids.
Pots & Pans sm
Yes, go to the Dollar Store, buy all kinds, then buy a couple rolls of aluminum foil to line pans.. Bake in oven as often as possible, bread crumbs and a little non-fat oil go a long way! After using once, throw foil away, use new foil to line pan, use again. After pan falls apart, make the decision whether to buy another one for a buck! Worried about veggies? Do the same, steam veggies in pan lined with foil, follow directions as above. Save money, clean bill of health. Who needs Cephalon?? Be good to yourself, you work, Lady! Well, just kidding but I do this sometimes when I need a break and it works, really!!! I heard Cephalon and T-Fall are good. But how do I know? I like throw away better, too busy for all that other stuff. Good luck to you. Each time I open my cupboard door, I get hit in the head. Rather it be lightweight aluminum than a great big real pan. Happy Turkey Day. Using one of those dollar store bought ones for that. It has a really cool double strength bottom and I can throw it away after. To each his/her own, depends on the situation and whether or not you might get caught!!
Guys and pans - Arrgh!
Every man I've ever lived with is like that with nonstick pans. They snatch the best, most expensive one, and won't rest until its completely ruined! If you can ever train one NOT to use metal in them (nearly impossible), then they will refuse to clean them properly (baking gunk on top of gunk over and over during midnight pigouts when you're not looking). No matter where you hide the pans, they will bypass the old fashioned kind AND the ones they've already ruined and zero in on the new one you were trying to keep safe! And then lie, deny and argue even when you're sticking the damage right under their nose.
These are the same kind of guys who have to leave a wet dishrag/sponge/whatever under a pile of dishes in the sink whenever they get near a kitchen no matter how many times you show them how gross a dishrag gets when they do that. Even with the dishwasher a foot away. Lately my guy has taken to leaving empty dishes, containers, wraps, etc. in the refrigerator - I guess he's having a science project to see how long it takes me to see them and get them out of there.
I think its just passive aggression - they figure if you get tired of it you'll do all the kitchen stuff, including cooking snacks in advance for their midnight pigouts. I fantasize about padlocking my kitchen (or at least cupboards with good pans, dishes, etc.) and not let them in it without supervision - which is impossible as they always want to eat when I'm either working or asleep.
One of these days he's gonna find a favorite T-shirt at the bottom of his pile of dishes, as well as tools dented, bent and scratched scattered in weird places throughout the house. Maybe then....no, I'm just having another fantasy. They won't learn, its the war between the sexes, and it never ends.
as I'm aging, I do not like HEAVY pots/pans
La Crueset was too heavy for me as is cast iron plus cast iron is bad for people with hepatitis problem(s) so I tend to stay away from cast iron (puts off iron in the food and hepatitis C feeds on iron) as I have a family member with this particular hepatitis.
My hands are also very bad after transcribing for 30+ years - so I tend to want nonaluminum lighter cookware which would be something like Farberware or Revereware if they still make the latter. *lol*
Fried round steak, mashed. pot, chinese cole slaw, biscuits and pumpkin pies. nm
Yeah, she lets pans sit overnight from cooking
sandwiches or eggs and then uses them the next morning to cook the same or she will just wipe them out with a paper towel and call them clean...no way! When she lived with us, I would have to get to them before she had a chance to use them the next morning on the kids before I got up!
I still get a couple loaf pans of it every year at butchering time
DH doesn't touch it but I love it. I grew up on it too.
I also grew up on Spam. Mom had a stove that had a pull out griddle above the oven and she would put spam and egss on there for a Tuesday night supper.
I have 2 cans of Spam in my pantry now. The ingredients state: Pork with ham, mechanically separated chicken, water , salt, modified potato starch, sugar, hickory smoke flavoring (I have the hickory smoke flavor), and sodiu nitrite. Opps. There's that bad word-sodium nitrite.
I've got Cuisinart hard anodized pots and pans
They still look like they came out of the box and they're about 4 years old. I'm impressed because I used to go through a set a year on the average so I bit the bullet and paid more money and I'm glad I did.
My family made home-made mozzarella,
and it was very good. I was pretty small at the time, so I don't remember the exact process, just that it was done pretty quickly, and a lot of milk was used.
I don't know if you'll save a lot of money making your own cheese. The cost of milk is very high, too, and you need a lot of milk to make cheese.
esl just made my day
I just had the best ESL dictator! He spelled almost every word he had trouble pronouncing and spelled it accurately, spoke slowly and ended the report with, "Thank you so much and have a nice day." If only they could all be so easy!
None of this is made up
I don't care if you think I'm weird. My kids and family didn't think it was weird and your opinion doesn't mean anything to me, anyway. Apparently there are people here with an opinion because they have posted so many - I don't care if ya'll want to keep it going. Be my guest.
LOL! You just made my day! :)..nm

Made too much $$$$, had to pay it all
Gosh, that tuition came around often and so did all the books I had to buy, all out of pocket because back then I made more than I should have (we also had a home business that cleared half a million the first year) but I would have loved not to pay out of pocket, I am really cheap on some things, my pockets for example.
ha, ha...that just made me think...take a lap

One of the cutest I made...sm
My kids are too old now but I use to make all their costumes and usually tried to match the up even though they are 5 years apart. My favorite was a scarecrow and a crow. Scarecrow costume is fairly easy with overalls, straw hat and rafia (My daughter, older) and my son was the crow, using a long sleeve black leotard and orange tights (had to dye some), sewed full head gear (including beak) and tail, feet to cover top of shoes out of felt. They won their school contest that year.
That made my day, I loved it !!...nm
x
Thanks, you both made me feel better about it...sm
My intuition is definitely telling me something is off in the story. I try not to be too quick to judge but can't compromise the safety of my kids.
It bothers me a lot when stuff like this comes up, reminds how difficult the world is these days. I love technology, movies, music, the internet, etc., as much as the next guy, but it sure raises a lot of issues with your kids that weren't there when we grew up. Whatever happened to the days when kids made doll houses, sleds, and clubhouses out of cardboard boxes and the first thing you did after school was change into play clothes to race to the house with the best swingset or grab a snack to watch the Brady Bunch or the Monkeys.
By then, they usually know, and if not, will be made fun of by other kids.

For those of you who believe this rule had to be made
because of those with medical problems - you are very naive. We are know there are exceptions to all rules - this has obviously become a huge problem with obnoxious children.
Ok, well how would you feel if you made...
your daugther get this vaccine and then 10-20 years down the line she dies from some crazy side effect?!! Then you would have to live with the fact that YOU COULD HAVE prevented her death by just not making her get the shot!! Or what if one of the long-term side effects is sterilization or something else that is just awful, how would you feel then knowing you could have prevented it?! I absolutely do NOT believe in letting my little girl be a guinea pig so some politicians and drug company can become rich! No way is my daughter getting this until they have LONG-TERM studies that it's safe for her!
i think iit was all made in fun, and besides if Simon did not like him
he would not be hosting the show.
I made such a big mistake
I got in touch with someone I went out with once, just to say hello. Now he won't leave me alone. I've told him I don't want to see him, that I was just saying hi, and he won't believe me. He acts like we're going to have a relationship and live happily ever after. He called me like 4 times before I ever got home from work, even though I told him what time I would be home. These were weird calls. One of them sounded like somebody else, not him at all.
He's not a whacked out kid, or on drugs (at least not that I know of), he's in his 40's and is a seemingly responsible single parent.
He's called a couple of times, ranting at me about me not answering the phone. He's called a couple of times and hung up. He just won't stop. I had to take my phone off the hook.
I wrote him an email telling him to leave me alone. Maybe he hasn't checked his email tonight, I don't know.
Anyway, this guy is seriously obsessive. He wasn't like this when I knew him before, although he did react rather badly when I broke it off.
I think I'm dealing with a psycho here! I never really knew him very well before, and now I'm hoping I can get out of it without having to get the police involved.
My FIL's doc made housecalls.
My father-in-law died this past November, but for about six months before that, his MD made house calls. Truth be told, if my FIL had still been able to walk, he could have walked to his doc's office in about five minutes since it was only blocks away. It had gotten just so hard to move my 6Ɖ", 250-pound FIL into a car, drive him three blocks and then get him out of the car, into the office, etc. etc. Finally, the doc said, "You know what, Charlie. It's easier for me to come to you!" He never made an exact appointment time, just knew what day he'd come over. When there was a break in the patient's at the office, he'd come over to the house, and my mother-in-law made the doctor something to eat, as well. The doc didn't have a traditional black bag, but he carried a very cool, very compartmentalized backpack with him. And he only ever charged for an office visit, since, according to him, his office was nearly in my in-law's back yard. He was a nice guy.
Okay...so the poison is not even made in the US?
Some kind of terrorism? What? How the....What the...
Man-made holidays...
but you are all so quick to forget that the Bible from which you quote from was in fact man made as well.
And if we are to only quote by the Bible as to what rules to follow to get into Heaven, you exclude a ton of other religions who believe they will get into Heaven or where ever based upon their man-made books as well!
Is the Bible the only true verse? If so, then Christians are the ONLY true believers and will be the only ones to get into Heaven. Bull...
Like I always said though, whatever floats your boat.
Me personally, I do not want anyone in my room preaching to me on my death bed unless I personally asked them to do so.

I too never made Montana but in the 70s
this film was shot completely in Montana and you get to see/feel so much of the environment you almost felt like you were there.....that part of the movie was worth seeing it...forget the plot
not a bad plot though either, if'n ya like Jack Nicholson.......*lol*....which is why I went actually....Jack in the 70s....terrific to some folks, not to some others (no flaming to commence here please). I just thought if you could rent this movie, you'd enjoy it for the scenery.
Have a GREAT time on what sounds like a SPECTACULAR trip.
I'd rather ID's were made harder to get so my next

The thing that really made me wonder is that
I am having problems reading and comprehending. I read like crazy. I always joked I could not afford my reading habit and got a library card instead. I actually retain what I read too.
Now I am having to re-read something several times. In this business, that costs money.
The other thing I've noticed is that I walk around all the time wondering what I was doing. I am a lot more confused too. She said this could be from the anxiety medicine and my depression. I honestly feel like I am losing my mind is the best way I can describe it! I cannot keep up with things. I get confused. I'm a mess. Also, I am too young to be having problems like that already, as far as my mind going or something.
My PCP suggested I see a neurologist. I just went back to my old psychiatrist though because I knew my meds needed to be changed anyways and I needed to start seeing one again. I think maybe I will see about looking into it further. My brother is on Concerta, and I've thought about just taking one of his pills and seeing if it helped any to be able to tell the doctor that, but I know I shouldn't do that. Maybe I will go see the neurologist after all.
I'm so made at my husband
Honey, I have found that the majority of men in this world think that their job is the most important and no one has it as hard as they do. I would tell him just for one day that you want him to do your job, plus take care of kids and keep a household running. I bet that would make him not say another smart a** comment again!! What would men be like if God hadn't created women?? I hate to imagine.
That made me laugh.
You are right about the gorgeous doc. My old OB doc years ago was so gorgeous. Beach bum, bleeched hair, dark skin and just gorgeous. I only saw him once. Not kidding. Couldn't go there.
I hope your hysterectomy goes well when you have it. My best friend had one 6 months ago, and fortunately she was able to have a vaginal hysterectomy and not abdominal. She was fine in a couple of weeks. Mainly just sore. Lots of good thoughts for you.
I believe my husband has just made sm
a claim on the dog. Not that we need another dog, we already have 2, but it's a very pretty dog. I'm waiting for the animal shelter to call me back with an update. The phone isn't staffed all day as the volunteers all work part time. Only 1-2 people man the phones. The animals are all well cared for and we do donate regularly at every canister we see. I hope he is going to be okay. I haven't been hardly able to work worrying.
I agree with you and have made up
my mind to just ignore, and not even open anything negative on this subject again. Thanks for your input. You are absolutely correct. To acknowledge it is to fuel the fire. It will finally have to burn out.
Made a mistake x2
This is the second time that I tried to make a vacation around a big track and field event that DH runs in each year. We left last Friday for St. John New Brunswick. It's not a hot spot place, let me tell ya! We did manage a whale watch which was cool, and a day in Nova Scotia which included a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. Then, we moved down to Maine for another 5 days, and we're in the only dull spot in Maine -- Orono. Went to Bangor and spent the day in Acadia today, but I'm actually working from the hotel room now while DH runs in the meet. I don't know why I did this again. I must have been insane. So what am I doing this weekend? Working in a hotel room, and then driving 9 hours for home on Monday. sigh
Don't know, but you made me CHUCKle!
xx
Not one reply as of 5 pm has made(sm)
mention that Sadgirl has a child.
Why is that not a huge factor/motivator in these replies?
Made me laugh. When I go in for my
BP check, I will use that line, but will say it is my
husband's driving.
Thanks for the funny.
I made my son one a few years ago SM
It was SpongeBob on one side and solid red on the other side. He still loves it. He is starting to outgrow it too, so I may make him a new one this year. My other 2 would probably love one too, but the material is sort of expensive to make them all blankets that are big enough. I'll have to think about it.
Chickadee
Where are you? I think the movie was made not too far from me. nm
!
oh, your post just made ME cry....
I so get that......*tears*.....I recently lost my dad, he was very_old but we were ThickAsThieves and for a long, long, long time, I'm talking decades and decades...how lucky was I?!?!?!!! I say recently but it was nearly 3 years ago......I got to care for him during his illness and that was a blessing to me (10 years) along with outside help.
I wish you and your daughter THE BEST - and I don't know where you live or your financial situation, but if I had the resources, I would find a field where you know it's grown and scatter his ashes, Colombia comes to mind or Kentucky *lol* read the news - hey the Everglades in Florida!! *lol*
I, myself, want to be cremated and my ashes scattered over New Mexico, the Sangre DE Cristo Mountains near Santa Fe. [Of course, my religious upbringing does not allow for this...but I'm not all that religious and certainly not in an organized fashion...it's between me and G_d, though one of my children is NOT happy about this *lol*]
