My older teen is 19. She pays for her own insurance, but is on my policy. I will pay for my 17 year old until he is 19. I got them both used cars, and now if they want to sell them and get another one, that's up to them.

Do people still buy cars for their teens or do they share cars? Do you pay for insurance or do they have to get a job and pay for it? My parents gave me nada, but that seems extreme, so I would like to know what other people consider normal.

You must feel as though you are at your wits' end -- just don't let your son know that. I encourage you to continue to practice assertiveness/"tough love." Do not argue with him; give him a couple of choices when situations arise. Don't allow him to be disrespectful.
It sounds as though your son needs attention. His negative drug test was a "positive"; praise him!!!

.Every day find something positive and praise him often for even the smallest thing.
.Everyone has talent(s); what's you son's interests. Show him you are interested.
.Consider Big Brother/Big Sister (maybe a retired teacher will be available)/the "Y."
.Chores/responsibilities -- mowing lawns (earning spending money), assisting at a local nursery, household chores. Keep him busy!!!

Just wondering if I'm reading too much into it. Obviously it's not proof. I know kids try to be cool and it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I was truly just wondering what you all would think if you read that.
My teens
They don't get squat from me. If they want a car, they can go earn the money for it. They can also earn the money for the insurance and cell phone as well.
As of yet they do without. I allow them to take the car on Wednesday evenings to church for youth group because I cannot take them, and to their Orthodontist appointment every 6 weeks because I cannot take them.
Otherwise, if I am not driving, my vehicle stays in the parking lot. My hubby drives his to work every day.
I believe just giving them these things makes them feel it is a right or entitlement. I had to earn my own because parents didn't want to give. I can't afford to give, but I think I would still make them earn it because they tend to care for the things they have to earn better than those that are just given. Know what I mean?
Universal is more for teens really.....
MGM is great for 3 and 7 year olds, as is the Magic Kingdom. Epcot is more for teens and adults. Haven't been to Animal Kingdom but it's for 3 and 7 year olds as well as adults and teens.
Someone I know just went back up to Universal and said much is closed inside - it's not doing as well as it did back in the early 90s. I loved Universal when I went, that was in 1997, and I'm adult (many times over *LOL*).
They'll have fun NO MATTER WHAT - this I can promise you!!!
Buena Vista is a very nice area to stay in and very close to all parks. The Disney parks have escalated in price and went up TWICE this past year....may be better to buy 3 (if they still offer 3), 4 or 5-day passes - unlimited visits and cheaper in the long run.

of interesting as one does not have "all the time in the world for that anymore." We have got to get when we can. But also he works nights and obviously sleeps some during the day. Maybe that is what has kept the fire going all these years. LOL
Teens and preteens?
I was standing in the grocery line of a major store tonight and the F word not coming from one of them, but an older woman on a cell phone right behind me. Her complaint was that there were not enough lines opened up and that is when the word came in. I only had perhaps 5 items and my going thru took not but a few seconds. It is everywhere.

My oldest DS got one his first year of college where was going to school. It was an expensive lesson for him, but one he learned well.
Teens recycling biz
Here's the thing. I have two teens and we live in a fairly rural area where job opportunities are limited enough as an adult, forget about being a teen looking for a job.
The kids came to me last night and have come up with a business idea for the two of them. Recycling.
Neither are quite old enough to drive yet. The eldest will be driving in about 8 months so any driving will have to be done by dear ol' mom of course.
My question is for anyone who regularly recycles. Is collecting for money even worth it? We already recycle but it is packaged separately and picked up with our other trash and WE pay them to pick it up.

My son is 6Ɖ", 280 lbs, college football player, and I would have no problem knocking him out if he talked like that to me......ever!!!
Teens do try to get away with things, and sometimes forget who they are actually speaking to their parents and not their friends on the "street" - no excuse ever. With that type of behavior, they might find their bags out on the curb.

I try to tell him that he never would have married me if he's known me at 16 or 17. Talk about bratty! He is open to learning about communicating. He calls himself a "neanderthal" and readily admits he's too heavy-handed (figuratively) sometimes and that he needs the female perspective from me.
Thing is, he's got two grown daughters. But they didn't grow up with him and so this is completely new territory for both of us. We haven't seen his first kids more than a handful of times in the last several years, and I know he's terrified that our two (we also have a 19 yo son) will turn their backs on him too. So it's either over-indulge or get very strict, and very little in between. This parenting stuff really can be perplexing, can't it?

I totally agree. We were thinking about buying another car. Both of our cars have around 97,000. One is a van and needs a new sliding door and we have a smaller car that needs a left fender, but you're right no payments, which I totally adore, so I guess we'll fix both. The van needs a major tuneup, but still cheaper than buying a new car.

I am really a sad case and actually have saved all the cars (almost) that I have ever bought. My car insurance man loves me because some of them are actually insured in case I drive them. Three of them are in the back of the house and are awaiting restoration whenever we "get around to intermediate telephone consultation" and one is actually ready to be painted and have the seats redone. I do care about engines and it has a huge one. We could use it to race for pinkslip (if we were so inclined). I like to start the engine and listen to it. I know that sounds crazy. One of my favorites is a volkswagon I got in my 20s and it now is an antique. I just bought another new car that I love and I am trying to force myself to sell the almost new one I was driving before I bought the brand new one, but when I start to sell it I feel like I am losing a "friend." Soon, I will need to rent a building to keep them in and get another extra job to pay all the expenses. I envy you the ability to keep your collection down to model cars. I like those too, but I can't drive them so that wrecks it for me. I want a vintage Jag and I know someday I will get one even if they do have bummer electrical systems. Glad to know I am not the only female who loves cars!

My fave was a ོ Pontiac Tempest...Way back when the boys were little I was pulled over by a young police officer who asked why the kids weren't in seatbelts...I said, "Well, they didn't become standard installation until 1967"...She didn't believe me, had to call in to verify the fact and just gave me a courtesy ticket. Of course, I had them custom installed so I didn't get stopped in that small burg in upstate NY.
Love the old cars....No computer brain pieces that take out the entire electrical system....a coupla bolts to take out an alternator, couple to take out a starter...and they're made of real metal and don't crush like the plastic juice box cars they make nowadays.
Too bad the car companies haven't gotten around to installing rollbars in cars...But, then they're in the business of selling more cars, not saving lives.  Cat

My 20-year-old nephew and I still talk about the times we spent going to the junk yard to find the fender, headlight, etc. for his Plymouth Horizon -- I think. We had a great time and really bonded. It just impressed me that they were not interested in muscle cars, or trucks or a Mustang and just happy and content that they had a car that ran and took them where they were going. In fact, he was picked for graduate of the year with the most unusual car, also got picked for best looking, most likely to suceed and another one but could keep only one and he kept the one about the car because he said it meant a lot to him as we worked on getting the parts and then he and his step grandfather worked on putting it together. Cost me all of $150 to help him replace the parts and gave me so much more in return.

using profanity it really peeves me. Mind you, I can talk like a sailor too, however, I find the "F" word is peppered in speech lately, even with the girls. How unattractive and anything but adult-like behavior.
Pre-teens and makeup question. sm
My DD just turned 13 and I have agreed to allow her to wear basic makeup now. However, she is not applying it appropriately to where I think it looks decent. I am not a big makeup person and all the teens are into this glitter stuff at that. I would like to take her somewhere to really teach her how to apply makeup, select her colors, etc. Does anyone know of a place that does this type of thing and any good recommendations that would help?
P.S. I'm not into gas guzzing cars either.

$20,000 is less than most cars cost
You should have no problem getting a home loan for that amount ANYWHERE. They will probably try to jack up the interest rate because of your bad credit score, but don't let them. Bargain with them and if they won't deal, tell them you'll go to the bank next door. Get them down to 6.5% or less if you can.

I used to own only foreign cars
I had Mazdas when I was younger. Then I married my husband, and he works for a Chrysler/Jeep dealship so no more foreign cars for me, but I do love my Jeep.

If we had put them on our insurance policy we wouldn't be able to afford insurance to this day because of the driving record! I laugh because the youngest is a firefighter now and drives the truck all the time! I guess all that "fast driving" prepared him for something! haha

Kids don't make enough today to do it all - including teen car insurance - and some parents LIKE TO HELP...again, to each his/her own. My children have been working full time for 10 years and I'm still wanting to help them with that car insurance because it's exhorbitant for young people even in their 20s....until 25 actually where I live -

it's not *spoiling kids* what with Florida rates, that's a given.......quadruples for kids 25 and under.......check it out yourself....it's not spoiling. I also moved out at 18 and did it all myself but I didn't drive until I was 26 or 28 so car insurance was never an issue back in the days for me. Today, it's a different world and car insurance definitely depends on WHERE YOU LIVE.

actually they DO cast out their male children as teens
often times if they do not "comply" with the religious teachings. There is an entire group of "Lost boys" all over Utah and the surrounding areas where FDLS and other religious off-shoots have cast out their teen boys. Really really sad. I lived in Utah and have known quite a few current and former FDLS members and also know a couple of men who as teens were "cast out" by their families. I think also the older men don't particularly care for the younger teen boys being "competetion" for them as far as the young girls go...it's disgusting religous fanatacism at its worst.

I've been married 23 years, and between the hubby and I, we've had four new cars in all that time, five if you want to count the car he brought into the marriage with him, which was a couple of years old at the time. For me, I had a 1986 Aerostar van which I bought new and drove to death, and now have a 1998 Windstar van with 110,000 miles on it, plus a really cool custom Yakima rack for my kayaks! We do buy all of our cars new, and it's lovely to have long stretches without any car payments, like right now. DH is driving a 2001 Taurus. But he's got lots of miles on that due to long commute to work and traveling to clients. Bought that one with no money down at 0% because my hubby, a CPA, loved the idea of free money. So that was the biggest car loan we ever had, but the loan cost us nothing. The Taurus has about 160,000 on it, and DH is starting to warm to the idea of replacing it. We're considering either a camry hybrid to save on gas, or a nice sturdy Volvo, because statistics show that Volvos average almost 20 years on the road.
Pfaltzgraff, books, cars, shoes
When I was a rich yuppie I collected a ton of Pfaltzgraff (tea rose), then I decided I had way more than I'll ever use so I quit. I'll never have enough books though. I also have some cars waiting to be restored and my guy is into that. We also have some toy vehicles that keep accumulating. I need to get rid of some of the shoes though, its just so hard to throw them away!

I had 2, a van and a bigger vehicle, both on their last tires. He first bought me a green Toyota, glad to get that and then went and traded for a silver BMW. I did not have a clue as to what he had bought me. That was 9 years ago and since that time he has bought me 2 more brand new BMWs. I am not looking that gift horse in the mouth! He is a jewel who had been my friend before marriage and I was not looking for anyone to marry when he happened along. Best move I ever made when I suggested marriage. Married in Las Vegas and happy ever since. I am finally spoiled and loving it.

This man was ambushed, murdered, beheaded and burned. The headline says these teens murdered a sex offender. Way down in the article it says that this man 9 years ago at age 17 had sex with a 14 year old. That was his offense. It does not say he raped her. While I agree he should not have had sex with a 14 year old, I think it is very unfair that after he suffered such a horrible death the headline reads that a sex offender was murdered. The article also says that his being a "sex offender" had nothing to do with why the boys murdered him, they just did it to do it. How sad that after his death, that is what they post about him!!

After years of owning only American cars, I now own a Prius.
I'm getting 50 mpg even on the PA turnpike. I'm extremely happy with it and would buy another in a heartbeat. Earlier in the year, Toyota announced that they will be building Prius in the U.S., too.
Carfax relies on owners of the cars to report problems
We bought a "perfect" car, ྙ Olds (in 2000) that only had 45,000 miles on it. Loved that car but it was a flood car.The engine was still good but everything power plus the frame gave out in 5 years. Wouldn't pass inspection and had to junk it.
Nothing on Carfax had any of this info. So I'll never pay for a Carfax report again.

I'm the last dinosaur - I don't think teenagers should be driving their own cars. She needs to be spending her time on school and music, maybe working 8 or 10 hours a week at a job if she can handle that as well.
A car is a tremendous responsibility and she will have her entire life to paying ins., gas, etc. Give her a couple more years without that responsibility.
Frankly, unless she has to drive to school or work, I wouldn't let her have her own ccar. Not because she isn't mature enough, but because the roads are filled with angry, distracted drivers and I would be afraid everytime she was gone.
Senior year is early enough for her to have her own car.
I know no one else will agree with this, but I wanted to say it. As a former teacher, I believe this is part of the reason the rest of the world does a better job educating their young people. No one else in the world expects their high school students to work for money for a car - their kids are in school as full-time students. Look at their test scores compared to ours and look at who is populating our graduate and professional schools.
Driving to NYC
I'm leaving Saturday morning to go to NYC to see an off-broadway play with my daughter and her friend (my daughter's 13th birthday), and I was wondering if there was anyone in the areas between Upstate NY/Pennsylvania/New Jersey (my route) here that might be able to tell me how the roads are and how the weather in general is. We have a lot of snow here (some places have over 6 feet) and I'm a little worried. I've never driven to NYC before so I'm a little worried about the weather. TIA.

I hope he is not driving because if he is -sm
it is only a matter of time before he is in an accident, hopefully only a 1 car accident. If is is driving he is not only endangering those in the car, but those on the road driving around him. Point that out if you have not already, very irresponsible and foolish of him IF that is the case. My DH is similar with docs, though he will go the eye doctor, but anything else he has to be dying, I am surprised he is not dead (Had a horrible case of pneumonia a few months before I met him, was out of work for 3 week, temps of 104/105, hallucinations, horrible sweats, etc, crawled in to see the doc at their office a few times, the only thing that saved his life was his girlfriend of the time, though why she never called 911 or took him to the ER is beyond me, he needed hospitalization, total miracle he lived). Mine acts like a big baby most of the time too. If you don't have life insurance on him, get it now while you can, then you will be okay if needed. As for SS disability, it will take a while to get that if he gets to that point, and even then he needs to see doctors and get doctor reports to have that submitted to SS so they can approved disability--but if he has a fixable problem then there is no way he will ever get it. Try to guilt him into to or else just get him in the car somehow and get him to the ER.

My DH has issues with my weight, too. Well, he's not perfect either. He's just as overweight as I am, so why the double standard? I told him if I didn't have to work so much and handle EVERYTHING else that I do (and then I listed everything for him), maybe I'd have time to exercise. He's doing more around the house, and I am making an effort to increase my activity level and eat better. He also had to stop pushing food on me, which I think he equates feeding me as an expression of love. Don't worry about the weight. You can still curl your hair, put on some makeup and wear a little slinky something. Cripes, this is the only time I've actually had boobs! It's not so much the weight that bothers them as the attitude. When you get in a rut wearing elastic waistband pants and a ponytail to work at home in, and you stay in them all the time, you don't feel as feminine as you can. Know what I mean? Forget about the underwear and give him a real woman!
I am not alone! The news is driving
me nuts! But I am like a person with a sore tooth and your tongue can't leave it alone. I should just quit watching. They throw out these headlines and never follow up. The reports involving children are really getting to me. How many times have you seen a missing child story only to have the camera pan to the cross street signs, the block number of the house and then, of all things, "here's her best friend, Ginny, who lives right next door, and says she is really missing her friend tonight", and then they post the child's name on the screen. If the parents don't have anymore sense, you would think the TV station would. They have practically made themselves the pedophile home shopping network. And yes, I have actually written to all the major Houston stations and only one bothered to write me back, the NBC affiliate. I don't know if they stopped doing this, but I just saw one yesterday on ABC, so that had no effect on them. Oh, well, enough of my soap box.

and hold my breath or pray pretty much. Years ago my sister had gone over a bridge traveling to Tennessee just before it collapsed and I never forgot it.
On the news today they said something like 70,000 bridges in the country are in disrepair. I say put our taxes to better use! Do something constructive for a change.

got the tail end of the report, mostly just that he'd been taken to the hospital, but the somber tone of voice made me realize pretty quickly that he had died. VERY sad day for me, I've always been a fan.
This mother saying too big a town for driving through yet
I honestly can understand this as when my children first started driving we were living in a huge city and all the freeways around, not some small town where everyone knows everyone and I bit my nails to the quick. The mother probably just wants the child to get more experience under his belt before he tries such a trip and the son is lying to her and making this trip regardless. He and the girl both sound like they are too much into each other for things like school right now. It happened to me- son just did not want school after high school. Sad when it is handed to you on a silver platter.
i stopped night driving when I was 48....
I live in a huge metropolis where everyone on the road is nasty.....gave up night driving at 48 due to problems seeing with the red, green, orange-yellow traffic lights PLUS headlights and rear lights.
I also have just given up driving all together...people are too nasty on the road.......I never did like driving, let my permit expire when I was 16 - never had a huge interest in driving.....just me is all.......
My children drive and all my friends drive so there's no problem whatsoever *lol*
Those low-mounted driving lights that - (sm)
illuminate both sides of the road are really helpful on dark country roads at night, and in the rain, too. They help me see puddles of deeper water, especially those along the side of the road that can get you spun around if just one front tire hits them. They're also good if you're watching for deer, pedestrians, etc.
I've learned a few tricks that help improve night driving vision:
First, if your windshield is pitted, replace it. The pits diffuse bright lights and make it hard to see.
Keep your headlights, tail-lights & turn-indicator lights clean so they'll be as bright as possible.
If I've been doing a long drive from daylight into night, especially if headed into the sunset, I'll wear sunglasses that are as dark as possible during bright daylight. Once the sun sets, I'll switch to more lightly tinted ones and wear them for as long as I can to help get my eyes better adjusted to the dark.
Once it's pretty dark, I usually take a break at a service station, and in addition to the slight rest I get from topping off the tank, I also take that opportunity to get my windshield as clean as possible - inside and out.
Next I'll wipe off my driving glasses, and finally, use some "Clear Eyes" eye drops in my eyes.
Finally, a sort of "last resort" trick I use to improve my vision right after passing an oncoming car with very bright headlights is to close one eye for a few seconds as the on coming car is within a certain distance. That way the iris in that eye doesn't have to readjust as much as the one that was blinded by the oncoming headlights.
All of those things make driving at night a little easier.
I must be the only one who LOVES driving at night.
When I was a kid, I did a lot of long-distance driving with my dad, and we were on the road a lot at night. I always loved that. It seemed so cool to be out on the roads at night when most of the world was tucked into their houses. It always seemed like an adventure. And then, I'm an avid backpacker and have been known to solo. I love the woods at night and the sounds of owls. It's lovely at night when it's quiet and dark.
Within the last 30 minutes I walked in the door following a 3-hour ride, mostly on the PA turnpike. It's not late, but the days are short now. I purposely left as the sun was going down, because I love watching the pinks and oranges of sunset. The moon is full tonight, and I saw the moon rise tonight, too. Che bella luna! It was just beautiful.
I have a dependable car, and if I were in trouble, I know basic mechanics, have a cell phone and AAA. I also know that most people are good people, and so that's how I choose to live my life ... counting on the good and appreciating the beautiful things. It makes me happy, and I'm well aware that the time is approaching when my eyesight, joints and muscles might not allow me to enjoy the simple things like driving at night or setting up my tent along a trail somewhere. So I'm doing it while I can!
