I have had cats for 25 years and NO damaged furniture - sm

It is called training them.    Provide scratch posts in places where they will run to use them because it will be somewhere you frequent often and will be there to tell them what a good kitty they are.  Do not tuck scratching posts out of sight because the cats like to use them where you are.  Keep a few squirt bottles scattered around where you can get to them quickly and easily.  The very instance you catch them doing something you do not want them to you need to quietly get that water bottle, squirt them, and say NO loudly.  Take them to the appropriate place to scratch and lavish praise.  Should not take them long to catch on.  Above all, no hitting and you MUST redirect them the second they do something wrong.  If they seem to have trouble catching on then Scat Mats offer a barrier of sorts to let them know they are not wanted some place.  However, expecting them to stay off the furniture is probably not realistic, but not clawing it up is very realistic.  Never had a single problem with the dozen or so cats I have had over 25 years.  All of them kept their claws and we have always had nice furniture.  Best of luck to you!

Need to keep those darn cats off my furniture
I am not having them declawed, so not to worry. Am getting new furniture and need desperately to find something that really works. Have had 2 leather sofas and a fabric chair and they really have messed up the chair (thank goodness not all that expensive) and the leather has some damage as well but not to a terrible extreme. The new furniture is all fabric. I have read citrus fruit near the legs, think something that is like double sided tape the paws stick to, therefore making it uncomfortable for them along with electrical pad to slightly shock if they step on. I have furry friendly things around for them to claw so have already done that. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. My furniture is supposed to arrive the 6th of next month.
Having worked with feral cats for many years, best bet is
to get a have a heart trap and catch the cat, go straight to the vet for testing, neutering/spaying, the isolate in a single room and try to start to working with it. It already knows your voice and you are a source of food which is a start. It does take time though, and there are those that just never really come around, but it is worth a try.
Help for badly damaged hair
Got a perm a couple months ago (bad mistake -especially once DH said - is that the way you wanted it?) Anyway...since then have gotten it trimmed a couple times to get rid of the dead. But it is like a rats nest, looks dry and very frizzy. I have tried...curling creams, leave in conditioners, mousse, putty, creams, and a wide range of hair products. The other night I tried mayo & egg. My hair still feels dried out. Actually just feeling it now, the part that has grown out is not dry, but the part where the perm is is dry.

Anyone have any suggestions. How I miss my beautiful locks of my youth (I'm 51). I used to have beautiful curls and the hairdressers always commented they never seen such beautiful natural curls before. Now it's just old, frizzy, no curls and no body, and a thinning spot toward the top of my forehead. Talk about feeling old. I did just color it because sometimes coloring brings back shine and makes it manageable, but didn't do anything but get rid of the gray. I'm ready to just go Sinead. Any suggestions much appreicated.
Glad you're back, even if a bit damaged! ;) nm

After their breakup (her and Kevin) he publicly announced that her hair was so damaged after sm
years and years of hair extensions and that the only way she could keep up her look was to continue using hair extensions which became very painful and was "killing" her roots AND that the hair growing out of her head was dying almost immediately.

I don't think anyone took him seriously, but after seeing what she did (she even shaved her extensions off in the photos), I can see what he said as carrying weight now.

I just think it was years and years of stress of having to look a certain way or doing something to please others and she just said "**** it!" I'm going to cut all of my hair off! Now what do you say??/
I think cats look beautiful - love pics of cats

They can also be he!! on wheels to live with and a major PITA.

I say this as my dog is barking at a leaf blowing by the front door.....

value of furniture
If you've got the courts behind you and the cops with you, see if you can get a court order to find out what the store itself paid for the furniture before markup and take the amount of money's worth of furniture based on THAT figure.  Tell them this would compensate you for the interest they owe you for keeping your money.  You'll get more stuff that way.  Go for it and don't be ashamed to tell any other customers why you are there with the cops and a truck.  They are stealing from you, not the other way around.   Even if you take stuff you don't like, look for things you can turn around and sell and make a profit from yourself like sale items and then re-sell at full value in the papers.
furniture
Thats great and I am glad its working out. I guess I just didn't understand why it was to be sold and you don't get to keep it. I hope that will teach them a lesson but you know these companies, i'm sure it won't.
furniture
Why didn't you just go collect your furniture. I would have. They just keep giving you the run around and you have a court order so if no $$ today take the furniture.
furniture
Congrats! I am soooo happy you finally got your money back!
Furniture coming up now
what I want to know, will your groomers put these nails on for you? Also am planning on the wood post and getting a spray bottle. Wish me luck!
I do think dark furniture would be most
dramatic. Plus, dark furniture with simple lines is very in right now if you watch the decorating shows. It is a nice-sized room, similar to mine.

I can suggest staying away from furniture with oversized posts. My parents got a bedroom suit a few years ago with posts that were of a large diameter, around 5 or 6 inches, and it looks heavy and odd in their room IMO.

Need help with a dog that will NOT stay off furniture (sm)
We have a black lab in the house - had him since he was a puppy.  He was/is not allowed to be on the couch and other furniture but....he considers it a challenge.  If I am in my office, he will get on the couch and jumps down as soon as he hears me walking into the family room.  I don't know how to make him stay off.  He is a very smart dog and we challenge him in other ways with training.  One of my kids will be home for the holidays and has allergies.  The dog hair on everything is getting to me real quick!  He is 2 years old now.  Forget the dog bed - he looks at it and laughs!!
Regarding brand names of furniture

Am thinking about getting some new furniture. I noticed American Signature had a really good sale on but have never bought any from there. I kinda got stung buying some, what I thought really inexpensive and nice-looking furniture from Ashley's when I moved into my new home in 2004. Well, excited about the newness, I did not check out each piece as it came in 1 x 1. That was my mistake- could not be returned, shoulda checked the small print. A living room chair has arms, 1 is lower than the other- my Bombay chest in the foyer has 1 leg on the bottom that is slightly turned out more than the other- my bedroom furniture has the paint on top flaking off. Needless to say, I do not care about using Ashley again. Now I know I can buy the really, really costly like Broyhill, Thomasville and the like but I have just spent out almost $10,000 getting my main room tiled and my bathroom fixed in slate so now am trying to see what else I can find. Has anyone used American Signature, if so do you like and I am open to any and all suggestions about others. Thanks.

We bought some Ashley furniture sm

If the picture comes out (is there any way to preview before you post??), it is the sofa you see on the left and also the matching loveseat. We are very happy with it. But there is just my husband and me and our college-age son when he is home, so it doesn't get a lot of wear.

We just moved into a new house and bought new furniture for the living room and dining room. The other brands we chose were Hammary (dining table, chairs and sideboard) and H00ker (entertainment center). We are very happy with all of it.

LOL - it wouldn't let me post H00ker!

Speaking of leather furniture sm
Does anyone have any idea how to make worn spots look like new again? We have a huge medium-tan set, not the darkest, not the lightest, 3-4 years old and some of the seats and arms are beginning to look very faded. I hate to put the wrong treatment on there but it was very expensive and doubt the store would do anything about it. I think it's starting to look shabby but it's my husband's fave and he refuses to "see it" fading. Thanks.
Doubt OP has 24/7 wattch dog. He knows furniture

How to get paw prints off polished furniture
I have a small mahogany chest next to my front door. My son's girlfriend's cat is living with us temporarily while his owner moves into her new house. She's a lovely cat, but she likes to hop up on the mahogany near the front door to see who is coming and going. She's left lots of paw prints on the shiny surface. I tried polishing with pledge. I tried cleaning with Pergo wood floor cleaner, and I've tried something called Cabinet Magic, a cleaner for wood cabinets. I've gotten a lot of the prints up, but there are a few still there. I've put a towel over the surface until Kitty moves to her own home this weekend. But how can I get those last smudgy prints off my shiny wood surface?
Furniture with handles on the back to help
with moving! How dumb is it that there is no place to hold onto?
Got some beautiful new furniture..but full of static. sm
Had the furniture delivered on New Years eve and we have all had the shocks since then. When you sit on it and move you can hear the static in the fabric. The poor dogs look like they got their tale stuck in a light socket!!! The fabric is a micro-suede in choclate brown. Any ideas on what to do to get rid of the static in it?? We have a dry/moisture gauge in our house and it is in the "comfort zone" so we are not dry right now. Help!!!!
How about regular old-fashioned wax furniture polish? sm
Beware, Kitty might skid on that towel and dig in with her claws to steady herself.

It's very nice of you to be kitty sitting!

American Signature Furniture is Sears brand I think

they make great furniture today...and Kenmore appliances are Sears brand and I LOVE Kenmore...I have been to an American Signature Furniture store a long time ago and I think I liked their furniture.

Very happy about the heads-up on Ashley Furniture - as I have always wondered about their stuff...so THANKS for that!

You can buy mild shock pads to place on furniture.

Buying new living room furniture this weekend...
Can't wait!! :)
They make paint for everything now...from metal to even outdoor plastic furniture...I am sure there

So excited, new digs at home, anyone ever have a designer to give advice on how to place furniture?
I am just so excited can hardly type. I am getting new tile throughout my home, well the living room/dining room big room and then slate for my master bath and carpeting for my master bedroom. My question is has anyone ever had a designer or room coordinator may be the name to come to their home and tell them how to arrange furniture and items in their room? I have never been satisfied with my living room. I have 2 full size leather sofas, an oversized chair, several floor lamps and I have end tables with wrought iron legs. I have some decorations but if you have this done  do they want you to buy other things in case you need to put more color in the room, say for instance a throw, new floral arrangement, and the like. Sure would like to hear from anyone who has gone through this. All this tile work starting next week and should last about a week and a half.
My husband is 7.5 years younger. Been together almost 20 happy years...nm

My feelings; people shacking up together for years and years
and then all of a sudden deciding to get married don't need a thing, obviously. A shower should not even be given. I lived with my now husband a while (nowadays who doesn't!) before we married and I also had been married before years ago but he was not....so of course HIS mom wanted a shower. I told her absolutely not unless it was just the immediate family, his mom, sisters, etc, more like a celebration/get together. And so that's what we did. Showers are tacky, period. Unless it's a couple of young kids getting married straight out of the house and that doesn't happen much anymore.
Been with a man 13 years older, now with a man 4 years younger.
Younger is better, at least in my case ;)
Sorry, meant 75 cents. Still, that was years and years ago.

I studied to be a scopist years and years ago
Back in the early 1990s I took a course called Note reader Scopist. They read court reporter notes (those long skinny papers that looks like a cash receipt) and types them into documents. I had found the course through something called At Home Professions but just didn't finish it because it was too expensive for me. But I am familiar with them and even found my book from the first course I took. Looking back I think it would have been a blast if I had kept up with it.

It is definitely legitimate. A lot has changed since the early 90s, so I'm not too familiar with the industry now. I do remember what was really weird was it didn't take a lot for me to learn it. For instance I could look at a line of court notes and see something that looked like: NV p srn - and I seemed to know exactly what it said. Just weird. My DH used to say that I understood it because I was an alien and my ship crashed in Roswell. HA HA HA Anyway...that's what I know about it. But if you Google note reader scopist or at home professions i'm sure you could probably find a lot of info.
I have been vegetarian on/off for 35 years, was vegan for about 5 years sm
not that hard. Right now, I am having so many issues with food allergies and celiac disease, having to give up nightshade veggies...nothing left to eat. I am eating some meat now, but not when the gastroparesis sets in!

Being vegan is not hard...unless you are a celiac. This is how I figured out the celiac part because so many of the meat analogs and vegan packaged foods use gluten for the protein and I got really sick from it. I gave up all the premade things and the whole grains with gluten and I was fine.

There is vegan and then there is VE-GAN. By definition, vegans don't wear, use or consume anything that is derived of animals...no leather shoes, most shampoos and toothpastes are off the list, as are deodorants. No wool or silk. Anything with soap usually has animal byproducts. It is very involved and rather difficult to do.

Giving up meat, eggs and dairy is no big deal, except for cheese. You hear that ad about "comfort proteins" in a baby formula and there is such a thing. Mother's milk, be it human, cow, goat, whatever...contains a chemical that triggers the release of endorphins in the brain so that feeding feels good in more ways than one. The purpose of this is ensure that the nursed young want to nurse and thrive. Human milk has a lot of these, so does cow's milk and cow juice triggers the same reaction in the adult human brain. Cheese is concentrated milk and therefore these chemicals are also concentrated. As a result, cheese is an addictive substance. This is the hardest thing to give up when going vegan. Vegan cheese substitutes are nasty and they don't melt. If a dairy-free cheese melts, it contains casein, an animal protein and not vegan.
I studied this years and years and years ago
Most definitely is legitimate. In the late 1980s I studied to be a note reader scopist through a group called At Home Professions. I loved it, but unfortunately could not continue due to no funds. It was reading the court reporters notes which looked like a grocery receipt with a bunch of letters scattered on it. The weird thing was I found it extremely easy. For instance I would see a line that looked like: av e cr, and for some reason I would know what it said. My DH told me that's because I'm an alien and my ship landed in Roswell. HA HA. Well I know that a lot has changed, after all it's been over 20 years since I took the first course and know a lot of it is computerized now, but it is most definitely legitimate and I've heard people like to do it. I think I remember one of the courses was in medical terminology and another course was in legal terminology. Should be able to find a lot of it on google, or maybe go to your local college if they offer it and talk to an instructor.
Cats

My only suggestion would be to have set feeding times for the cats, that way you can monitor which cat is eating what. Just a thought -

Although my cats have started to eat my dogs' food, so I guess I shouldn't be one to give out advice!

cats
Iams has been notorious for cruel treatment of their animals in research - you might want to switch brands.
cats
I have the same problem, getting my cat declawed tomorrow. She has clawed through the leather.
Cats
My sister uses Soft Paws, which you glue on to a cat's claws. She said that they last about 6 weeks. My cat loves to jump on counters and scratch chair legs. I have used Sticky Paws, which is a double-sided tape. I have also heard of products that you can spray on furniture that makes it undesirable, though I haven't tried that myself so I'm not sure if they work.
Cats
What cat food was he on there is a HUGE recall of many many brands of cat food - they changed the source of their wheat gluten and cats and dogs are dying from liver or renal failure - check it out on MSN or CNN . The same manufacturer makes about 60 different brands.

We never had a cat till the kids brought home an abandoned one. He is just like one of the family. I like everybody else would spend money I dont have on him.
Cats

My sister uses Soft Paws with her cats and really likes them.  She said that the Soft Paws will fall off about every 6 weeks due to growth of their claws.

We have no more cats
You are going off on ME because I was looking for some suggestions to get HER to understand the destruction her pet has caused.

If it was anyone else but family, I would have shot the dog without hesitation.

As a matter of fact, I have used the pellet gun to pop him in the rear several times. That only keeps him away for a few days at a time.

You can say what you want but if I just went out and shot her dog, that WOULD be like killing her kid to her.

My husband's sister is more important than the cats. We loved our cats but my kids have one aunt. Only one.

Thank God for no more cats

Like I said watch your kids around the chow as the older they get the nastier and more protective they get and are much more aggresive than a lot of other dogs. Even if it were my sister, if her dog did that and she would not accept responsibility for the dog's actions -- would not accept it.  My animals are members of my family (I have no kids just step) and my dog is part chow but if she had ever shown agressive behavior in her past 16+ years or had killed a couple of cats, I would have had her put down and hated doing it but would have felt it was necessary.   Again, if another dog did that to one of my two cats -- either family member or not -- something would be done especially if it happens more than once.   Just my thinking -- again you were asking for suggestions just don't like the obvious ones.   Cannot treat this situation nice and sweet like ice cream and cake as it is ugly.

These are cats though
not doggies so dominance in the cattie category? I don’t know but still my sensitive one.
Cats
I had to laugh when I read your post, I have often told my husband that if I had to chose, he'd have to leave. LOL.
3 cats and a dog
Cats names are Bailey, Max, and Scooter. My German Shepherd is Kodiak.
Six cats...sm
Fidget (combination of freaking midget, small when he was born), Dogfood (don't know why, hubby named her), Mother One Eye (obvious, she is the mother of Fidget and has one eye), Big (outside male cat, named after Carrie's Big on SATC), Ellie Ann (she actually looks like an alien cat, changed up the name a bit), and Mr.Pinkas (huge, longhaired boy, loves to sleep in the attic area and comes in with pink insulation all over his backside, hubby said no way to calling him Mr Pink A$$, so Pinkas it is).
cats
I don't know much about San Francisco....probably too high a risk to let the cats out by themselves.   Watching the "real thing" is not quite enough for the felines....I mean, when you got one that can jump 12 feet in the air and snag a red bird (cardinal), beats up moles, chipmunks, and cottomouths (snakes)....that's Napster....I've seen my friend's cats nearly hurt themselves trying to go through a plate glass window after the birds, chipmunks, et al.....it's such a tease.  .I've had many, many cats and they would walk for miles with me...Fioma was the best......Right now Napster (12 lbs) and Zeus (120 lb Great Pyreness dog) walk together with me in the morning....I get the most curious looks and smiles from the kids on the school bus seeing the 2 of them together.  If you can manage some time to take your cat out to explore and play in the grass (there are leashes for them) you'll find a happier cat.  Napster won't even use a litter box...meows at the door or window by my desk to go out.  Remember, you don't own them....they own you....you're just a custodian of these sweet beings..Cat.
cats

Just for you San Fran.....Congrats on your new rescue kitty!  What's it's name?

re: cats
Do you have one of those cat towers? I know they're kind of expensive so I haven't bought any for my cat. What about a bookshelf that they can climb up on? Also my cat loves feathers tied to a string and hanging from doorknobs. She bats at them constantly. My cat tends to sleep all day cause she doesn't have a playmate except for me so she plays when she wants to when everyone is home at night.
cats
I'm so sorry about this; I am now very sad.  I love cats/kittens so much, even though my husband, son, and I are all allergic - only my daughter is not.  I will pray for this special kitten.  This gets to my very soul.
cats
I, unfortunately, am allergic to cats, as is my husband and son. My daughter is the only one who is not allergic to cats. On a recent outing to dinner in the evening recently, a home we walked by after parking our vehicle had Halloween decorations up, with a live black cat sitting on the porch and looking at me with its glorious green eyes. How fitting for the season. I love it! Cats are so very agile and preternatural, absolutely gorgeous and fascinating to behold. I love them all, even though I cannot be a cat owner. I have a beautiful blue merle sheltie.
