I had a medical ethics class a year ago and

The topic was centered around how far we should go with reproductive assistance.

After examining the issue, discussing implications, and much thought and my own soul searching, I made a big change of mind.

I decided to change my position to being against any reproductive technique that does not allow a couple to become pregnant through natural means. No artificial insemination. No saving eggs or sperm for later implantation. Only surgery or techniques performed on an individual that allow them to procreate in a natural manner.

So much was involved with the decision on my stance and it was a difficult one because I know people personally that this would affect. I guess that is why we have varying opinions.

Scorching topic.

Medical Ethics Question.

You are a doctor. You have an 80-year-old patient with stage 4 cancer, who has just finished radiation treatments. The patient is on Medicare. You (the doctor) know of a new drug that "might" slow the cancer, but it has not been approved by Medicare yet, and the cost is $1000 per week.

Do you recommend this drug to this patient's family?

I went back after 1 year in the 1970s in medical assisting, got my A.A.S.at age 55 and am returning

for occupational therapy assistant this fall at age 69.  Was thinking about coding certificate as I used to do a lot of coding in the clinics I worked in over the years but after reading your more recent work history coding posts, think not;-)  Actually decided on the occupational therapy so I could join a hospital to be a play therapist in pediatrics with positions offered at local hospitals.  Figure the kiddies will think I am like their grandmother;-)  You are never too old and I just checked into FAFSA and evidently I make so little doing MTing for a clinic part-time and a national part-time, I even qualify for some grants.  Go figure.  I didn't mind doing MTing when I started doing this 14 years ago - can't stand it now.  Didn't burn out, just wondering why we are paid so little for the experience, education and responsilbility needed for this job.

You gals, get it done now, never give up or think you are too old.  You can't put a price tag on a good education and a job you enjoy going to.

Get out when not working - exercise class, knitting group, book discussions, cooking class, library

I disagree. I still have my class ring (class of 1985). It's tucked away in my jewelry...

box.  My fingers are too fat to wear it now, but it has sentimental value.  Mine was just a metal ring as well and it still looks great.

I gave my class ring to a boyfriend back in the day and it wore it on his pinky.  Then he lost it on the beach at the local lake.  We ended up breaking up not too long after that and I thought I would never see my ring again.  Then one day I'm reading the local paper and there's an add that said "LORI -- did you lose your class ring at city lake?  Call... and describe the ring."  I called the number and described the ring and it was mine.  Thankfully I had had my full name inscribed inside the band of my class ring!  The guy that found it was this little old man who had a one of those metal detectors and he spent his retirement days scanning beaches, parks, etc for change and what other treasures he could find.  I couldn't thank him enough!  He wouldn't take any kind of reward for finding it.

Just thought I'd share my class ring story.  I feel that class rings, class keys (Do they still do that?), and yearbooks are such an important part of the high school years, but that's just me.

Ethics
Taking an ethics class right now and just touched on this subject. I am stunned at how many of my classmates were against this...
Ethics, she owes big time,
otherwise why the secret from her husband? Saving her own tail.
judeo-christian ethics ??
does it have to be Christian values - or would Jewish values work as well - does that bible someone is holding to include the old testament as well as the new ????
I don't understand the ethics of the doctors involved
xx
Aha! That's what my daughter's book says is in the "code of ethics" for dogs (sm)
That they and cats must pretend to hate each other in the presence of humans! LOL!
Difficult based on taste, easy based on ethics.
I was a vegetarian for 10 years, then a vegan for about 5 before meeting my husband, i.e. Mr. Barbecue. He thinks he will die of starvation if he doesn't have some form of animal flesh on his plate at least twice daily. I do eat meat minimally now but not without guilt about the way the animal was raised and slaughtered. I don't believe meat is healthy either, esp. because of the hormones, antibiotics and unnatural feed commercial livestock receives. I have free-range chickens and use their eggs, and I buy raw milk from a local small farmer whose cows graze freely on organic grass. I am working my way back to a meat-free diet in spite of my DH. Can't wait to shed the 20 pounds of animal-fat blubber I've accumulated and get my cholesterol level back down to where it used to be! You just have to give peas a chance.
Bigger issue - a 16 year old living withi a 29 year old and liability
Are you still not responsible for him until he is 18, how can he tell you where he will live?  Unless he emancipates himself and he does something wrong, can they go against you since you are his mother and legally responsible for him?  I worry more about him living with a 29 year old sister rather than returning a house key to me that is a bigger issue.
My 14-year-old is going to be a mother-in-law (so funny) if you google it and 11-year-old daughter
x
Been there, done that. When I went into the medical
field, I knew I would have to work some holidays. It's not AS bad when I can work from home. I consider jobs in the medical field emergent jobs and knew that working holidays came with the territory. I never thought I would see the day when grocery stores would be open on major holidays, though. Oh well, at least I still have my husband around to celebrate the holidays with and I realize there are some women who have lost husband or children and would give just about anything to have them back. I am blessed beyond measure and I realize that. It's just that this is the first time he has ever had to work on Christmas Day.
2/3 class
I'm a former school teacher. As a matter of fact, I did my student teaching in a split 3rd/4th grade class. It was wonderful! It was the twice the work and preparation, but the kids were fantastic.

Kids selected for split classes are usually the best behaved, most independent workers in the class, so you should be bursting with pride that you daughter has been selected. Every other kid in the making the adjustment and will be meeting new kids, too, so I wouldn't worry about a 2nd grader being put in a new environment. Kids are extremely resilient and if she's smart, independent and motivated enough to be put in a split class, she'll more than meet the challenge of adapting to her new school environment.

Let us know how she does, OK?
Gas in Class
Yes I agree! These schools should get back to teaching! This is unreal! Getting punished for something your body does naturally? I don't think so!
are you trying to say that medical
transcriptionist's don't work? what is your point here???? Go away.
you are not low class....
that poster was being rude. I feel for you. Keep being you and don't feel sorry for that! I think you are a hoot!
I'd let her out of the class. (sm)
Why break her spirit and make her lose her enthusiasm for school.
I'd probably do it if it is medical. nm
x
Don't kid yourself. If you had any class at all,
you wouldn't have posted your sarcastic and now condesdending remarks. You wouldn't know a standard if it walked up and slapped you in the face, at least not in this context.
maybe i have no class
and maybe i have no standards, but at least i know that i definitely would not want that man
She is probably a medical transcriptionist
.
Are you prescribed that for a medical
condition or just take it to stay awake. I am just curious...not judging, lol.
Ballet class :) sm
My daughter (now 8) has been in ballet since she was 3 years old. Of course, the first couple of years they do spend learning how to stay in line, twirling around, etc BUT they begin learning the basics which is great! You will see her progress over the years if she stays in it. My daughter participate in The Nutcracker this year and she is now really in love with ballet. She only had 2 small parts but she thougth it was the best thing in the world she has done so far. She is also on a competition cheer team and ballet beat it out. :)
Well, sometimes there is a medical issue
as there is here, not just eating and eating for no reason at all. Was always trim and slim until this but thanks anyway for the curt note.
Maybe that ESL could give a class
on "Keeping Your Transcriptionist Happy"!
New Class Rules
I have 2 children and neither have to the best of my knowledge done this in a classroom.  However, if there is a medical issue behind this I do not believe the child should be punished.  I do agree it is rude if done on purpose but I do not believe that was the situation wiht the original poster.  When I have parent teacher meetings I am praised up and down because my children are the best behaved in the class so I do not believe my personal parenting skills are an issue here.  I think everyone is making way too much out of this.  Boys will be boys.  Sooner or later they will out grow the behavior.  Maybe the problem with the world today is that kids cannot just be kids anymore?  Things are different now then they were years ago.  I cannot remember school shootings or threats at my school.   Twice my daughter was sent home because of a bomb scar.  This never happened when I was in school.  The world is different now and if the worst a kid does in class is burp or pass gas I think the teachers should be grateful.
Passing Gas in Class
Yes you have made a good point. I just do not think that a child with a medical condition should be punished. I think others without a medical condition need to learn some maners. Thank goodness I have never had to deal with this sort of thing. Knock on wood.
I would think only if there are other serious medical issues
related to the alcoholism. It probably has to be pretty severe. That's sad.
parenting class . . .
My husband and I recently took on Love and Logic classes. I am the type of person that is always looking to improve on things, though, so I don't have a problem with it. What's wrong with being a better parent?
Yes, she has a medical condition
shaking, quivering and twitching. Paris is afraid to go to jail that is it. Greta's take is a bit much. Greta keeps saying she has a medical problem. She needs Xanax or something. She will calm down soon. She was not quivering or shaking in her backyard hugging her parents. PLEASE.

Sheppard she has "Extreme bratititis". FUNNY.

Now PARIS PARADE she is off to jail now.
Does she have medical issues? sm
That may help in knowing where to look. Good luck to you!

swim class

Hi trose,

Thank you for being so thoughtful and asking about swim class....Many responded, gave some great ideas, shared personal experiences and were still concerned about the outcome.

wonder if there is a medical reason?
might ought to know the reason before the remedy.
class rings
It really depends on what you/she want and can afford, how important/cherished you think it will be, how she/you believe it represents the high school experience, etc.

I think I spent close to $400 on my daughter's class ring. Actually the ex and I split it, but I believe it was in that range.

It is really nice and she still wears it. She says she will always wear it. It has lots of little things on it that reflect the activities she participated in while in high school. Good memories. She put a lot of thought into personalizing it. It was actually a lot like my HS ring which I lost at the beach a year after I got it :-(

We didn't get a lot of extras, but did get 10K gold which is what shot the price up so much. It is a substantial ring even though it's the female version (smaller than the male one -- be happy you're not buying for a boy lol).

Anyhow good luck :-)

my mom was UPPER class and did same to Pop

they loved doing that zit-picking thing........*lol* - not me.....hot compresses will do very nicely....they can pop on their own....

but you're not alone - and it's not low class as the poster below said...in their opinion.....

but it is GROSS........YUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH  *lol*

nice to see ya back, Hayseed.......I see that piggy of yours on your webcam occasionally!!

Have medical causes been ruled out?
Not sure if it could be thyroid or lupus or what, but hair can indicate certain things.

You might want to get the People's Pharmacy book. It is full of inexpensive solutions for problems like that.

Some show some class...
Though she's been everyone's joke, it seems, at least here's one person who's not trashing her.

This was a monologue from 10 months ago. Best thing on TV.

Does your dad have any medical problems. .
Your dad sounds like my dad. My dad was so negative that I just couldn't be around him. My dad would never go to the doctor. He was severely depressed and lost a lot of weight. He died a few years ago from CAD and was terribly anemic. It was sad because he died all alone, and he was only 55. My stepmother had left him. He could have gone to local VA and get free medical care. I begged him many times to get help. I know how frustrating it is to try and help your parents when they have no desire to help themselves. I hope your dad is healthy, but has he had a physical lately?
Medical Bills

I just finished my chemo and radiation for breast cancer.  I have health insurance but found out that they only pay 80%.  I have become overwhelmed with hospital bills.  Does anybody know if those companies are on the up and up, that say that they can help you cut your medical bills ?

Thanx for any help.

Medical Abbrv.
The other Sunshine:

I have found a site that has medical Abbrvs. It has been very helpful, it is www.medialexicon.com Hope it helps.
Is it a necessary medical issue or just something

If that is middle-class then I have to be
below the poverty level.
Medical marijuana use

I just watched an unsettling video about a young high school student diagnosed with cancer.  Had to have his leg amputated and he had excrutiating pain that kept him awake through the night for about 3 months.  Doctors kept giving him narcotic drugs and he was doped up/sleeping all the time.  He started receiving medical marijuana (in a controlled clinic) and it helped.  He said he would be able to function during the day and get his stuff done.  He regained his appetite and was able to build his muscle tissue back up (mind you this is not some dope addict - this is a clean cut high school student who used to play on the football team, definitely not someone who is going in just to get their "fix").  Anyway...this medical clinic was set up in California and evidently the person in charge of the police department of the town didn't like it because "he believed it does not work".  So he called the DEA, they went in and raided the place and threw the doc in charge of the clinic on the floor handcuffed him and hauled him off to jail.  Evidently the clinic was approved, they show pics of the doctor in charge of the clinic shaking hands with the mayor and being welcomed to the city.  Well after they raided his office they then went to his home and raided his home.  Now this doctor is facing possibly 100 years in jail (all because some uptight police person in charge does not believe medical marijuana works and he is against it.  The parents even said "what part of this don't they understand.  Medical marijuana helps.  It rejuvinates the brain cells, brings back hunger so cancer patients and others with serious illness will be able to eat and get better and not be suffering with pain.  No instead they want to dispense drugs by the pharmaceutical companies that are killing people and keeping them comatose.  It just makes me sick that this form of treatment is not being allowed for more people who need it (not just want it to get high - but actually need it).  This is why we need to get rid of big government.  Give the power back to the people where it belongs.

You should get a medical opinion
just to be safe. I have Bell's palsy that flares up every now and them. The first time I had it, I had a "full" feeling on the left side of my face with numbness and tingling, and my left eye was twitching like mad and the center of my tongue was numb for several days.  The following afternoon, it was full blown.  My mom is a massage therapist and she said that having a vigrous or deep tissue massage can definitely get blood flowing and so this may be a side effect of that, but to definitely seek a medical opinion just to be safe.  Good luck!
I get this from the medical profession, too -
My family doc respects my knowledge, but heaven forbid I say something medical if I have to take my daughter to the ER! They look at me like I have two heads, then continue to talk in monosyllables.
I would say something to the teacher of the class
They should be the one to stop this chick from preventing other kids from having one.

I wouldn't say anything to her parents, though. That is the teacher's job if they feel so inclined to do so.
Why isn't the teacher of the class saying something as it happens? nm
x
We should all be as "low class"

You go girl.  I've been in a funk and you just inspired me to look around and see that it's not all that bad.  I have my own home, I have pets that I adore most of the time, I have a great family.  No kids, but never wanted them.  My neighbors are great and most of the time I like what I do to earn a living.

Everything else is just outside distraction.

medical info
I do not think it is polite to disclose your sex life details or inquire into others.

You are either a predator or a transcriptionist, either way, you should be able to find info on the web.
