I got my dog Walter at a boxer rescue and he looked like a boxer pup but I quickly discovered (sm)

He was either a mutant boxer or not even part of the litter I picked him from. He had the jowly muzzle all the pups had, but he was huge. He seemed to be the same age as the rest of the litter, you could tell by the eyes and the teeth, but he was kind of like the big clutz of the group. But oh so cute. He turned out to be huge and like a lab/great dane mix. He has the short fur of a boxer and the big chest, and I now think he either was an orphan puppy who got put in with the litter or mom had another mate. Either way, I am so happy he is the one I chose, he is such an interesting character and a really stunning and majestic dog. Still a clutz though, he falls down over himself on the beach and stairs. And he is so tall he prefers to sit on top of the stairs on the deck with his front paws a couple steps down. But I've always had rescue dogs and they are so special.

PONTIAC, Mich. -- Scientists hope to learn more about what the Great Lakes' shorelines looked like about 10,000 years ago.

They explored a limestone land bridge that went from Alpena to Goderich, Ontario _ a distance of about 125 miles _ and an underwater forest of petrified trees in Lake Huron.

The 2006 research, in which more than 500 dives were made, is the subject of a documentary film, "Great Lakes, Ancient Shores, Sinkholes." It premiered recently at the Cranbrook Institute of Arts in Bloomfield Hills, The Oakland Press reported in a story published Monday.

Another study is planned for 2007 and should result in a second film, "Great Lakes, Ancient Shores," said Luke Clyburn, lieutenant commander of the Great Lakes Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and a Great Lakes ship captain.

"What we are learning about the Great Lakes of several thousand years ago may change the way we think of this area," Clyburn said.

Clyburn and other scientists have been filming in the Great Lakes for at least 25 years.

There is a petrified forest in 40 feet of water in Lake Huron about two miles offshore from Lexington, he said. Some of the trees have been carbon-dated to indicate they are 6,980 years old.

The Straits of Mackinac, a passage between lakes Michigan and Huron, have been spanned by the Mackinac Bridge since the mid-1950s but didn't exist several thousand years ago, Clyburn said.

"Lake Michigan was much higher than Lake Huron, and the two did not join as they do today at the straits," he said. But water from Lake Michigan seeped underground toward Lake Huron and the two bodies of water eventually became connected.

Clyburn's current film focuses on a sinkhole in Lake Huron about two miles from Alpena near Middle Island. In prehistoric times, the sinkholes were on dry land. Native Americans lived near these sinkholes because they provided water, which attracted game, he said.

Maybe next time I'll get to go on the AT....family resposibilites prohibit me right now.

They can't compete with soda, but when I was a kid soda was a rare thing, so fizzies were wonderful.

The best way is to run an ad in a newspaper. I always use the neighboring bigger city newspaper and have had wonderful success. I also run what we call 'e-mail campaigns' with pictures and information, also with success. ALWAYS ask for a reasonable fee. Our adoptions are $90. There are good people out there looking for older, settled dogs...just got to get the information to them. If you do go this route please really listen when you are on the phone with them. If they start talking about having wanted a young dog or puppy, they are not the right choice. State in your ad the age and temperament. Also, the prospective adopters come to my house and visit the animal first with the knowledge that it is a meeting only....to see if they like the dog and if the dog likes them. Again, it has never been a problem. Good luck.

i have a special place in my heart and life for rescues and feel the need to speak out on their behalf. if dh passed by them all, then this must be the dog for your family.
