My mother always sat me down from the time I could hold a pencil and write my name and had me write thank you notes. I have done the same with my kids and now that they are on the verge of adulthood, I hope the keep it up. I have never ever received a thank you note from my nieces and nephews that are his brother's kids. At the time of their graduation, we gave them money and not so much as a thank you in return. I even asked my niece if she got her card and she just said, Yep. The nephew who is closest to my DS's age at least said thank you this year when he graduated. More than I got from the older 2 and I'm sure the youngest will be no different.
On the other hand, my sister's daughter has also been writing thank you notes for a couple of years on her own and she is only 7. I mean, I know my sister helps her, but it's the idea that she is being raised to be grateful and polite.
I'm afraid we are going to be living in a very impolite, ungrateful society one of these days and people are going to be surprised. I'm not. It's already started.
