I am and yet I'm not

In Reply to: How many of you are orphans? - I miss my parents so much.

I lost my dad many years ago, in 1986. But in many ways my FIL was a better dad to me than he was (lost my FIL in 2002). My mom passed away in 1999, and that was a major blow. I still have not recovered, nor do I think I ever will. Life goes on, but it's not the same.

However...I still have my MIL, a wonderful lady who I love, and my aunt (my mother's younger sister), who I call my "second mom." So I am very fortunate to have loving people in my life who, while they are not my actual parents, do help to fill the empty place in my life caused by the loss of my parents.

I think people who say things like "they lived a full life" are trying to comfort you but they don't really know what to say. Sometimes you have to just appreciate the sentiment while ignoring the actual words.

My sympathies...when my brother and I were standing at my mother's bedside just after she passed away, we looked at each other and said, "We're orphans now." And then my brother put his arm around me and said, "We have each other."

I hope you have loving people in your life who can help you through the worst of this. It will get better with time but you're right, things will never be the same.
