I've done it so many times -- most exciting thing

Posted By: XanaX on 2008-08-29
In Reply to: Suggestions for moving across country? - Emily Ayn

Wow, where do I start?  I left MI when I was 23, having heard San Diego was nice.  I loaded up the Chevy and headed West.  One of many, many adventures I've had.  I've driven back and forth relocating across this country too many times to count, taking my job with me where ever I go.  Atlanta, Chicago, LA, San Diego.  I've done it with cats, a baby, and a 30-year-old car -- everytime all by myself.  I have a CB radio to keep in touch with the truckers and they would always help me when I would break down, overheat, or need any sort of help.  There is nothing like seeing this great country of ours one slow mile at a time.  Colorado and Utah are by far the most beautiful, but treacherous because of the Rocky Mountains.

As far as moving to a city you don't know a whole lot about, you have to contact the Chamber of Commerce for any particular city for all sorts of information about their town --- also part of the adventure.  I always loved being a stranger in a strange land.

And fear, oh yes, but more bravery than anything.  I've always told people that pretend bravery is the same as the real thing, just fake it and you'll do fine.  If you're young and courageous, I say totally go for it!!

I've been to NYC 3 times now, just
for day trips, but I would recommend that you get a ticket for the Gray line double decker bus thing. I think it is $50 a person, but you can get on and off as many times as you want, and it stops at most all the tourist attractions. I thought it was money well spent. Since we had a little trouble navigating the Subway the first time we were there. And I was a little scared of the taxis. So this was a good way to get around.
I've traveled alone many, many times,
including solo backpacking trips into the wilderness. I like the solitude, whether I'm in the woods or walking the streets of New York. But, of course, you do have to be smart about your travels. Make sure that someone back home knows your trip plans, and do check in with folks at home every evening or whenever you can. Be aware of surroundings, don't announce that you are by yourself, and project confidence. If you don't have a roadside assistance plan such as AAA, I suggest you invest in that, too. If you've never traveled on your own before, you might try it on for size before you go. Try a little day trip by yourself, maybe an hour or so away from home. Have a meal by yourself in a restaurant. Go shopping or sightseeing. Learn something new. That may be a very nice warm up. I've traveled by myself so often, that when I first set out on a trip, it sort of feels like putting on an old, comfortable coat. My travel routines are familiar to me, how I carry my belongings, where I place my maps in the car, what music I listen to, etc. Oh! One think I absolutely love to do these days is carry an iPod loaded with podcasts, which are like radio shows. There are zillions of podcasts out on the web and the topics are so varied and interesting. I find them mentally stimulating. Check out some travel podcasts. (I just got back from Gettysburg and I was traipsing across the battlefield with my iPod listening to battlefield guides talk about the history. Loved it!)
Enjoy yourself!
I've seen him a couple times but although

his tricks are great, I just can't stand to watch him, even though I have tried. There's something about him that bugs me but I can't put my finger on it.

Still, all in all, I think he is very good. Don't know how he does it.

I've done it too a couple of times.
I moved from OH to FL when I was 19. I wanted to get away from the snow! I had the best time and wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

I lived in Atlanta for 5 years, moved from there 5 years ago. The area was way too congested for my liking. Just to go to the grocery store was bumper to bumper traffic. As a matter of fact, there was traffic any time of the day or night. Even when you leave Atlanta and go 1 hour in any direction, you are STILL in traffic! It was ridiculous.

The other thing about Atlanta that we did not like is that because of the rapid growth, we had trouble hiring anybody to do anything. We would get estimates for work on our house. They would want the money up front and then say "we'll be here when we get here and don't bug us until then". It was awful. We ended up always hiring illegals (which there is also an abundance of in Atlanta and surrounding area) who always did a good job and always showed up! It even took 6 weeks to get a phone line put in.

I could rant and rave for a long time about Atlanta but you get the picture. I really cannot recommend it.

On the other hand, I am feeling a little jealous of your freedom. Do it while you can! Good luck.
i've gone out on the deck a few times,
but like the other poster, find it inconvenient. I have several items to drag along, and have to secure laptop so pets don't knock it over. Only do it on the nicest days when i can stay out there several hours and make it worth the trouble. i am very used to (and like) having everything at my fingertips in my office.
I've married the same man 3 times. nm

I've done that twice, both times to San Francisco. sm
Once in the mid ྂs and once in the mid ྌs, for about a year each time (I'd probably still be there if it weren't such an expensive place to live).

However, despite our winters with the blizzards and the weeks and weeks of well-below-zero temps, and mosquitoes in the summer that are large enough to carry off small dogs, I've put down my roots now and bought a house here in Podunk, so I'm thoroughly planted.
I've moved approximately 28 times...
the shortest I lived in one place was 19 days - the longest 9 1/2 years (so far). Hated it. Went to 9 different schools and hated that, too. I said I would never do that to my children and, although we had to move several times, they were only in 2 different school districts. You sure do learn to adapt, though!
Labyrinthitis - I've had it sev times - it is scary - you just need (sm)
some seasick med most likely. It is an inner ear infection - doesn't usually cause pain but causes the symptoms you have. don't worry - almost guaranteed that is what it is! See your doc for probably Meclizine and maybe a decongestant, maybe even antibiotics.
That's not true. I've tried to quit 6 times

in the past 5 years.  I made it for 3 weeks by being cooped up in my house while everyone else was having fun in the garage. But DH had an important phone call he had to take, so I braved it and went up to tell him. Just the whiff of smoke did it for me. Back on them.

I tried cold turkey, the patch, herbal supplements, and even hypnotism. I'm ready to try the Commit lozenges. That's the only thing left for me. I can't chew gum.  I've called the support groups so many times, I think they got tired of hearing from me.

I don't have a PMD, so I can't get an Rx.

My DH quit 16 years ago by throwing his pack out the car window as we were driving. He is so kind to me because I haven't been able to quit. He never harps on quitting. He understands. He's seen me go through withdrawal and it's not pretty.

My son and his wife quit when she became pregnant. He used Chantix and also had the wildest dreams so went off them after 3 weeks, but he hasn't touched up a cigarette since and being around people who smoke doesn't bother him.

I guess I'm a hopeless case. It's keeping me broke, too. I'm a 2-pack-a-day, 2 cartons a week. Even that doesn't stop me.

I whish the best for everyone who wants to quit and hope you all make it. I've stopped trying.

Yes, i am hopeless. I've tried too many times to quit

My first time was when I was 17. I am now ___....let's put it this way. I've smoked way over 40 years. I smoke at least 4 cigarettes an hour if you count the ones that burn away while I'm working. I am rsigned to be one of those that can never quit.

I have a heck of a cough in the morning but if I'm not in my house; i.e., out in the fresh air, in a place that doesn't allow smoking, I could go for hours without one. I should not have decided to work at home. Yet, I'm so lovin' working at home because I'm not good in a social atmosphere.

DH says "holy sh---" when he sees the amount of cigarette butts that are in the trash, yet he understands.  He started when he was 8 yo. He would like me to quit...after all... $70 a week is a lot of money going up in smoke, but he doesn't say anymore than that. He even buys my cigarettes if I don't have the money that day because he's seen me at my worst. Ever see Intervention with the drug addicts when they don't get their fix? That's almost like me. I'm absolutely nasty.

I'll probably be one of those people on oxygen and going out for my '"fix." At least it's better(?) than being on hard drugs??

I've tried twice to do Flylady and both times was overwhelmed. Tell me...
how did you get into it? I really want to, but both times I felt like the Flylady was demanding I do more than I could (or was willing). Did you have that problem? If so, how did you get past it? I haven't looked at the website in a couple of years, so maybe it's changed, too. I'll definitely have to check it out again. You sound very pleased.

I've been to Branson a few times. Haven't been in several years

tho.  Actually, it's been 13 years.  My son was 3 and we did Silver Dollar City and a couple of shows.  We also did that duck boat thing.  I don't remember what it was called.  But it's a boat that drives on land and you drive it right into the water.

I know Branson has come a long way since the last time I was there.  So I'm kind of excited!

I know it is very harsh...the thing is I have asked her so many times (sm)
and the things she says are hurtful to my children. I am not petty and it is not over something small like candy or just having a difference of opinion. The things she says to them really scare and upset them. She let them watch a woman giving birth on TV once when they were very young...I had not explained yet to them exactly how a baby gets out...they were both very upset. She also has told other family members that she believes my husband is a child molester and that he has made my son, who is 11, gay. My husband is not a molester. My son likes girls. He has no idea she ever said that, but if he ever heard that she did, it would probably be very devastating to him. Each time I have sat down and tried to explain to her that we don't expose our children to this or that, and that we don't teach them to believe that there are ghosts or demons after them, she says she is a grown woman and can say whatever she wants to and gets all teary-eyed and wants to cry. Then later she yells at me, "oh, yeah, that's right I'm not supposed to say anything." She kept the kids while I was gone overnight this past weekend and I specifically asked her not to say anything that would scare them. She let my daughter invite a friend to sleep over. She told them all about ghosts and demons and how she once saw a demon in her closet. The girl sleeping over got scared and cried to go home at midnight. My daughter called me on my cell at midnight crying because her friend was scared and going home and she was also scared. At what point do I draw the line?
I've been going through the same thing,
and I think I've found relief today. I talked to a career counselor at a private school and he was very encouraging. I knew I needed to go back to school and get a better job, but what? I have done a lot of research, and coding makes the most "sense" in some ways because I could go to Andrews for about $4000 and get out and get a job that pays very well. The only problem is that I'd still have a job where I sit in a chair in the basement of a hospital and deal with paper (or computer work). I'm 44, and I must be going through menopause or something, but just like you I am sick of sitting still and being bored. I want to move and interact and feel important and make a good wage and be in demand. After talking to this counselor he encouraged me that I could do it - be a surgical tech. He's been through the course himself, and had the same doubts, but his huge clumsy hands did learn it. He says he needs a career that is more in the field of counseling and he's now going for his PhD, but he convinced me not to take a course that is going to go against what my brain wants to do. I'm still looking into the details to make sure I don't have to take a bunch of prerequisites (sp?)like a community college would make me do, but I suddenly feel alive again.

I've researched many of the medical careers, so if you have questions, I may be able to answer. There is financial aid available. We can do this.
Also one thing I've found
is to always eat something crunchy with your meals - mine is often raw carrots or a few nuts. I have only about 10 pounds to go and it was hard, but I find I really like my 3 mile walk every night to unwind!  Good luck to you!
What's the one cooking thing you've never been able to

I cannot make a pizza dough I'm happy with, and I can't tell you how many recipes I've tried. Regular rise; made in the bread machine; all-purpose flour; bread flour; it doesn't matter. I've tried and tried but I've never been able to get that elasticy dough you need for a good crust.

Do you have one thing that just defeats you, every time?

The only thing I've read about
are problems with microwaving with plastic dishes. Sounded like glass was okay.
That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
A cat is a natural predator to those small mammals and birds and I don't see any of them going extinct because of cats.

I do agree that house cats should be kept inside, but only for their own protection and that's only my opinion. My cats stay inside exclusively.
OMG - that's the funniest thing I've ever read!

Isn't that a shame? But it's not just a recent thing. I've heard of it
//
I've read the same thing about bathing dogs. sm
I have a Sheltie, and the Sheltie book recommends bathing when s/he gets very dirty or before a show. They don't need routine bathing. They need frequent brushing which removes dirt. Some dog breeds don't have oily coats, so don't smell. Sheltie is one of them, a collie is probably the same.

I recommend taking Maggie to the groomer for a good brushing every other week or so. It would be good for Maggie's coat and skin. The groomer can advise you when she needs a bath.
What is the MOST outrageous thing you've seen/heard while working in the medical field?
While working in an oncology office I had a heartbreaking conversation with a newly-widowed young mother of 2. Apparently healthy husband suddenly turned up with a brain tumor, which killed him pretty quickly. The life insurance company did their due diligence and investigated the case, since the policy was issued only weeks before the diagnosis; but the patient had NO indications of illness at the time, and the medical records basically proved the negative; he hadn't been to a doctor because he wasn't sick.

In the course of discussing the point with the claims examiner, the widow told him it wasn't about the money (although she was going to need it to raise her 2 kids by herself). She'd FAR rather have her husband back. The claims examiner said he'd far rather have the woman's husband back too...

... wait for it ...

... because if he were still alive, he'd still be paying premiums to the insurance company!

Yes, it really happened.

I suggested the widow contact the state insurance commissioner's office and report the guy. Even if what he said/did was not precisely illegal, it was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.
How exciting! sm
Well wishes to you!  The tiredness is very, very normal!  Listen to your body and take care!  I often wondered with both of my pregnancies if it didn't have to do with the excitement of "we're having a BABY!"
Not very exciting, but...
I have a standing breakfast gathering every Thursday morning with 3 friends.  I also have Netflix, but buy DVDs that I know will be watched over and over.  And my whole family rents a house at the beach for a week every summer.  There are 11 of us and thankfully, it is a BIG house.
How exciting for you -- sm

I've been BFing since I was just a little kid.  My mom always drug me out an hour before the stores opened.

The ads usually come out in Thursday's paper (Thanksgiving Day).  In the past, I've forgotten this and bought the Wednesday paper only to be disappointed.  Get the paper and make a game plan.  Some stores open an hour or 2 later than others, so you may be able to get to both in time for the specials you're after.  Wal-Mart generally has a lot of specials, especially in the toys dept.  Our Wal-Mart gives you a map when you enter to tell you where each BF special is located in the store.  They put some stuff in strange places -- like TVs in the meat dept, computers in dairy, etc.  It's all wrapped, so you can't tell just by looking.  Ask the Wal-Mart greeter when you enter.  Our Wal-Mart is also open 24 hours, as are most, which means no waiting outside.  We usually arrive an hour before the sales start so we can be in "position" for the item.  Obviously, the most-sought after items are electronics, so be there early if you're looking for one of those.

Target is 1 of my favorite places because their specials run all weekend, not just until 11 a.m.  (I hope it's still that way this year).  They usually open an hour after Wal-Mart.  I usually head there second because even though the specials run all weekend, they do run out of stock.

Kohl's usually runs a special in addition to their BF ads, which gives you $10 Kohl's cash for every $50 you spend.  The cash can be redeemed usually starting the Sunday after Black Friday.

Don't forget that K-Mart has layaway.  If there's something there that you like, you can put it on layaway and go back later to pick it up.

General advise:  Wear comfortable shoes.  Be polite to others, but don't be a doormat.  If you got there first, it's yours.  Make sure you and DH have cell phones so you can communicate if you get separated.  Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!!

Let us know how you make out afterwards.

Well, for ME it's exciting!
I get to keep my 2 month old granddaughter while mom goes back to teaching!!! Of course, I was a lot better at MT'ing and keeping a newborn when I was 20 years younger.... LOL
It truly is exciting at the Garden
Just wanted to add that when I was down on the floor the first day at breed judging I called my sister back home and she was amazed. She said, Oh my God, that sounds like so much fun! All around you could see people in seats, people standing, people all over the floor, cheering, etc. It is infectious in the best sense. The day goes by so quickly. Best In show has to be seen to be believed! They turn the lights way down and you can hear a pin drop. When the Golden Retriever went around I literally thought the place would come down. When the Dalmation, Boomer, one for nonsporting a woman about three seats from us shot up out of her seat and cheered. What fun, what a magical night to see over 20,000 people standing and cheering for man's best friend. I am so excited just talking about it. Thanks for your interest. As you see, I could go on and on. I have memories that will last forever! I tape it every year and have several years to watch.
How exciting and fun. Best of luck to you : )
x
seeing that first robin is so exciting!
It makes us hopeful! I'm near Philadelphia, and I've been seeing robins for about week, maybe two. I can't wait to get in the garden and start growing things.
Actually, something very exciting for Friday
YooHoo, banner day. I am supposed to receive my very first full retirement check then. I am sooooooooo excited.
Oh, please! End times! People have been saying that since the beginning times!
It's just sensationalism. It seems that journalism has gone to a warm place in a handbasket. I briefly majored in journalism back in 1980, and what passes for journalism now would have flunked any of us right our of an entry-level course! It's all sensational reporting, because networks think that brings in the viewers, and thus drives up the advertising price that they can charge during broadcasts.
Another of my pet peeves in "journalism" is the phrase "Unconfirmed sources say . . . " Yeah. Right. Unconfirmed sources is just another way of saying, "Rumor has it . . . "
Next time there is breaking news, listen for it. It's said over and over again, because the networks and stations want to get the news out first. I don't know what happened to fact-checking and pursuit of the truth in journalism, but it's all about getting info out fast, and keeping the public tuned in with the most sensational reports that they can put out there.
Back in the days of the Roman Empire, people were treating each other pretty badly and in unbelievable ways, too. Crucifixion comes to mind. So, I don't really think modern news reports are pointing to end times any more than at any other time in recorded history.

Might be exciting now, but future will be grim. SM
I would suggest adding some excitement to your marriage. Try to find the guy your husband was, that turned you on to him. That is where your attention should be.

You cannot go back again and you are not an 8th grader, but are acting like one.
I agree - haven't been that exciting
to watch. Who knows, maybe they'll get better. I still love the show. Always makes me want to take dance lessons, though I know I'm a lost cause. :)
Now, receiving money is ALWAYS exciting!
Are you getting full retirement or taking partial benefits? Sounds like you get to slow down a bit on the MTing, and I'm sure you deserve it.

Are you planning on doing anything special with that first check that you worked so hard to earn?

CONGRATS :-)
What?! Wayne Newton not exciting? Surely you
xx
Any exciting plans for the upcoming holiday weekend? nm

Happiness is a heart thing; pleasure is a head thing.nm

Right away all 3 times...

luckily everything went well all 3 times.  My best friend wasn't so lucky and miscarried soon after telling people.

We have been there many times..
and we loved Fort Wilderness camping resort the best. It is a bit pricey but you can barbecue outside or cook (full kitchen) inside the cabin so you do save money there. There is a lot to do right there in the camping resort, fishing, boat and bike rentals, pools, restaurants, an arcade for the kids, snack bar, etc., so just a wonderful family experience. There are also lower *value* priced resorts right in Disney also. But I would definitely suggest staying in a Disney resort; everything is right there; transportation to the parks, etc.

And you can't go to Disney and not go to the Magic Kingdom! Universal and MGM are nice but don't compare, IMO. And Epcot probably is more for older kids/adults.

The kids will love the water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.

Anyway, here is a good website if you don't already have it.

http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/index

Most of all, HAVE FUN!!!
behind the times
Well, if you're behind the times so am I. My daughter has been taught since she was a baby that if someone takes the time and effort to give you a gift, the least you can do is take the time and effort to send a written thank you. Especially if something is mailed and you aren't able to thank them in person. I have a cousin who is the perfect example. When my husband died 2 years ago, I never got so much as a sympathy card. OK, fine, some people just don't know what to say in that situation--uncomfortable with death or whatever. This year we both have daughters graduate from high school. I was sent an announcement and party invitation which was out of town so couldn't go. But I sent a card and money the same day I sent MY daughter's announcement and invite. Did I ever get a thank you, written or verbal? Nope. Did they send my daughter a card? Nope. My mom went to their grad party and asked if they'd received my card (hoping to shame them) and they just said, "oh yeah, it was just so nice of her." Absolutely no qualms about taking without any gratitude and never reciprocating. I'd sent money because I didn't want to punish the daughter for her parents lack of social skills, but it appears that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I can't wait to get a wedding or birth announcement from this girl. Whether she knows it or not, she's received her last gift from me.
end times sm
I agree 200% with you and I am ready to go.  All have the choice to believe or not.  Yes is been talked about since the beginning of time, but our Bible tells us exactly what the signs are.  Besides, even IF it were not true, don't you agree the Christian life is a better way to live than anything else?  I believe its true and I don't believe we have much longer here.  I am waiting and watching!
How many times are you going

to mention that his father never contributed any money, not a penny?  Since you keep repeating it, it must be very significant in your mind.  His father never contributed a penny to raising him.  Now there is a rift between you and your son because of money.  Anybody else out there think these two points are more connected than they may appear to be on the surface?

how many times have you
x
How many times does this have
First, you have to find out if you qualify. Then, look online on the IRS website to find the schedule according to your SS#.

Of course, if you didn't use direct deposit for your taxes to begin with, they will send you out a check and those won't be sent out until later.

It is not a crock - we got ours on time, according to the schedule!

DD has had this 3 times sm
and each time a different diagnosis. First thought to be a swollen lymph node (from cat scratch) and put on antibiotics. Second times many months later was thought to be a cyst and put on antibiotics. A year later again, was told it was MRSA and put on antibiotics. Each time it went away and since the last time in Feb. hasn't not returned. Still don't know for sure exactly what it was but antibiotics did the trick every time.
LOL!!! One of the few times I actually
LOL'd when I typed those letters . . . heavily!
Times gone by......... sm
I remember when I was a child the "dime store" in our town. It had everything from pencils to yard goods to toys to old medicinal remedies. They had a wonderful candy counter where you bought your candy by weight. You made your selection from the glass-fronted counter that was juuuuust above eye level for a small child. The clerk would scoop out the desired amount of candy with an old brass candy scoop and weigh it on an old balance scale. Then she would put the candy in a little white paper sack. There were all kinds, jelly beans, butterscotch that melted in your mouth, peppermint that really cleared the sinuses, and wonderful little maple goodies to name but a few. It tasted so much better than candy tastes these days. And yes, they had Evening in Paris and Old Spice and hankies for both mom and dad. I even held my very first job there in high school where I helped take inventory every year right after Christmas. We had to count each and every item (well, probably not the jelly beans) by hand. I remember counting boxes and boxes of pens and pencils and rulers. I miss that store as it closed down many years ago when the big discount houses started opening up in the nearby "big" town.
At times she can be
hot and other times a mess. I remember her being on Ellen recently and the Pussycat Dolls (I think it was them) were also on there. This was also when Ellen had the dunk tank and if I am not mistaken the person that got in the dunk tank that day was in a great bikini. At the end of the segment wtih Pam she had to take off her coat and show she was in a bikini as well. She admits that she loves the attention. This woman is famous for being...well famous.

I have read that she is really a good mother. Everyone take that one with a grain of salt, go ahead, wrap it around a margaritia if you like!
I don't know how many times I have said to DH
when I see the way someone is dressed or how ridiculous their hair looks "That poor girl just doesn't have any friends." I remember in high school there was a very pretty girl that had several friends, but her make-up line was unreal. I could not believe her friends never said a word to her about it.

All my friends and I had little sayings like "LOT" for lipstick on teeth or "The sky is blue" if you needed to wipe your nose. What is so wrong with graciously and politely telling someone you care about the truth?
Yes! Several times and it needs it sm
really bad now. Hubby out of town on business and will be home tomorrow. First thing he said when I talked tohim tonight was he dreaded mowing the lawn when he gets home! It has been raining cats and dogs making it grow even more!
