I'm no doc, of course, but -sm

you both sound like my son and me. He struggled all through school, is still struggling. He's on Strattera, too, but, again, most of what helps is learning how to cope. Once we had him dxd, he was designated special ed. It was something of a stigma and took a little getting used to, but from that he got a resource teacher and some special adaptations, like extra time to take tests, allowed to listen to books on tape rather than reading them because he couldn't concentrate enough to read a whole book, things like that.

The teacher makes all the difference - a couple of his resource teachers were the pits, but his Junior and Senior years in high school he had this gem who actively worked with him to keep him on track with organizing his notebook, writing down assignments. His biggest problem was turning in the work when he was finished with it. He got countless zeros because he would lose his homework after he had done it! She would help him print out his assignments each day, taught him to make checklists, etc.

He's a Freshman in college now, in a community college because his grades weren't good enough for a four-year. He's seeing a therapist and we're still working on tricks of the trade, like putting something out of place to help remember to set his alarm clock to get to class on time.

Like I said, with me the diagnosis is less important than learning to cope with it. I believe you both may have ADD. My father, brother, and my eldest son as well as my youngest son all have the same characteristic. Although my father, brother and eldest son have never been dxd, I believe they have it too.

I would strongly urge you, if your concerned about your son to have him evaluated. Resource could help him (if he doesn't decide to use it as an excuse for not doing anything - that's a danger with the diagnosis).
