I'm leaving what little I have left in my 401K for now - sm

(what's left wouldn't do me any good, anyway), with the hope that someday it will gain back some of what it lost. THEN, even though I probably still won't have as much as was in it before, I'll most likely take it ALL out of the stock market forever, and invest in something concrete, such as land (which even if it can't be sold for a profit, can be lived-on). The stock market has become so volatile and flaky that it no longer makes any more sense to put your hard-earned retirement money into that than it does to blow it all on Lottery tickets or slot machines.

401K what to do?
Should DH cash it in or wait it out?
I have no idea about these kinds of things so please speak simple to me.
yes, we can have up to 3 loans with our 401k
and we can barrow no more than half of what is in it. We have 5 years to pay it off. Unless we are using it to buy our primary residence then we have 15 years. What I worry about most with that is making my paycheck too thin. They are already taking out 75 a week for health insurance, 56 for the loan, 20 for a spending account I have, plus 45 to 50 for my contribution to the 401k, 3% of my pay/per pay period.
I had also thought about barrowing against it to pay off my morguage. I owe somewhere between 7000 and 8000 at 6% interest. I went to bankrate.com and did a loan calculator and they estimated 75 per paycheck. I pay 333 a month now. It would be less a month if i did that and that would make me an official home owner, boy that would feel good.
Also the scary thing is, too many people pay off their cc only to run them up again. Once my retirement money is gone, it is gone then what
401K contributions
WIth all this talk about losing money in our 401K did anyone stop making contributions to their 401K? I'm not sure what is the right thing to do. I look at mine and I'm losing money (not as much as some because I am conservative but losing is losing) so I wonder if I should still be even putting money in it. Thoughts?
We are quite happy with our 401K - sm
unlike many others we only lost 25% (about $100K). We are still relatively young, DH is 49, so have time for it to recoup. We have a Fidelity fund with 4 mutual funds and one bond market fund (that money is totally safe). In the last downfall of stocks about 5 or so years ago we lost $30K which recouped pretty quick. Though I don't see our boucing back for a while, we continue to put over $11K into it. Prices are low so in the long run we will do well. I think it all depends on who you have handling your 401K and what funds you have your money in. We are very careful and researched, etc. before opening each fund we have. Started with 2, and now have the 4 mutual funds and the one bond fund. At one point we were earning almost $800 a month in interest in the bond fund, of course that is not the case right now but at least it is still earning us about $300 a month now. It helps that my DHs father lives and breathes the financial markets, has a great broker himself, and passes the info onto us. He has never been wrong so far. it is a great way to make more money but you have got to start when you are 20 or so, the only way to actually have a substantial amount saved by the time you hit 65.
You had $400K in your 401K?
And how did you lose only 25%? If you had it mostly in bonds, how did you ever get it way up to $400K? After over 30 years doing MT, mine was almost going to reach $100K. Then the stock market tanked, and it's got less than $50K in it now. If the loss continues at the same rate, it'll be at $0 by about Nov. or Dec.
THAT'S why I'm not wasting any more of my hard-earned money in the stock market. Over my lifetime I've contributed more to the retirement fund than it currently has in it. I'd have been better off stuffing it under my mattress all these years.
Agree with poster above. DO NOT take $ out of 401K...sm
>> My H wants to take 15k out of his 401k and be done with it. He says we are still young and we can still make it up. >>
I was watching Suze Orman's show recently, and she had someone who wanted to do this. The woman was in her early 30s and wanted to take money out of her 401K to pay off $22,000 in cc debt, just to be rid of it.
Suze said NO, and here's why - taking money out of a 401K now, instead of at retirement, means you'll have to pay penalties (state and federal) plus taxes which will equal about 35%. So in order to end up with $22,000 (to pay off her cc debt), she would actually need to take out about $35,000 from the 401K! So it would cost her $13,000 to pay off that $22,000. Not worth it.
And if that isn't bad enough, look at what you lose by not having that $35,000 in your 401K for the next 30-40 years, earning money for you like it should be. At at average rate of return, that $35,000 would turn into around $353,000! So that's what it's *really* costing you. Tell your husband that and see if he still wants to do it. ;o)
Suze said we need to stop looking at our 401Ks like their our piggy banks/savings accounts. They're for us to live on in *retirement.*
Not sure what your question is? But my 401K did lose value sm
and it bothers me very much; I lost maybe 25K so it could have been worse. It forced me to diversify and take a closer look at bonds vs stocks, and other investments. Of course I would like to have more than 50K as liquidity and emergency funds, but at one time I was more than 20K in debt. This is a huge improvement in my life and a total change in mindset. It truly has created peace in my heart, to have control over what I spend and not be a tool of the consumer society that says "You are not happy unless you have the biggest, newest, brightest" thinga-mabob that we are selling this week / year / month.
You don't need to buy stuff for self-esteem. Being self sufficient lets me sleep at night.
you do the leaving
My ex was the same way. After 17-1/2 years, I did the leaving. I know it is hard, but YOU CAN DO IT!! You and your kids will be better off in the long run. My oldest child wishes I would have left when he and his brother were still little. Don't let him keep abusing you - you are just as valuable as he is - don't forget it. Hope your cold/flu doesn't last too long. Will be thinking of you.
Leaving an ovary or not?
I had one at 35 and kept my ovaries, although now I wish they'd have taken them. Within an hour after surgery, I was up and around and ready to go home and had NO pain afterwards (this was vaginal). I felt better than I had in years and I think every woman who is beyond wanting children should have one. It gives you such a freedom from all the "mess" and such.
He refuses to do that. He says no way is he leaving (sm)
I have tried for so long to hold this marriage together for the sake of the children - but what am I teaching them if I continue to live in this situation? That it is okay for men to treat women badly? That you just let people treat you however they want? That spouses don't have to respect each other?
Any regrets leaving the Q?
They're getting on my last nerve, but there are those that say that being an MT is pretty much the same everywhere. I hope not; I'm tired of having multiple different hospitals during each shift.
re: leaving pets
No I don't leave messages but we've done some camping this summer and my kitty gets very mad when we leave. When we walked in the door after being away for a few days she wouldn't stop meowing at me, like she was telling me off for leaving her..she wouldn't let me pick her up either! Anyone else's pets get mad when you leave?
If you are serious about leaving, you need a plan. SM
First, get some therapy for yourself to gain back some self confidence. Then make a plan. Find out how much a divorce attorney costs and start saving. If you are not being physically abused, try to stay in it as long as kids are young. Then make your escape.
Believe me, you are not the only one going through this. Are there any women's groups in your town you can join? You really need to vent. I know what that's like.
My DH is leaving in just a little bit for Atlanta
He is going on business for the weekend (we are in VA and have about 2in of snow now and more on the way) and he is taking my DD along for a little Father/daughter bonding. We have been following the weather and saw that it is in the 30s today and up to in the 50s tomorrow then back to 30s on Sat. with snow expected. My daughter is going crazy trying to decide what to pack. LOL
I don't regret leaving either...
Been gone since last August and couldn't ask for a better company to work for now. I owe MQ a lot as they did hire me right after I graduated my MT course and I did learn a lot while I was there, but having said that, I haven't looked back once since leaving.
If you are leaving for 3 weeks, take them to a kennel and sm
pay for daily care. They need more than food and water, they need attention and loving and daily petting, and exercise. Bless you for taking them on, but don't desert them now.
Rosie Leaving The View
Just watching The View. I know a lot of you wil be happy. Rosie just announced that she's leaving The View. I didn't catch exactly when she was leaving or why, but she did mention her children as a factor.
Leaving for New York tomorrow sm
with my family. Watch for us in the Today Show audience. I will be the one with the laptop so I won't fall behind in my work. Just Kidding.
Running over a dog and leaving the scene?
Going on her merry way, shopping or whatever...?
Probably doesn't have animals; I agree.
She knew she was visiting and would be leaving (sm)
She just wanted to do a few things with her granddaughter before she left. If you had my in-laws you would understand invasive. You have to share your daughter. She is your child, but she is that woman's grandchild and she has rights too. She is sooo not asking too much. She sounds very humble and non-demanding. Try to be sweet to her. She won't live forever. Let her enjoy her granchild while she can.
sweats usually, unless I am not leaving the house and then PJs...

I'm loving life since leaving MT.

"I'm leaving my wife." I bought it once...never again. NM

uhh...that should be "suggested leaving"...not counseling...nm
I heard just last week that she was leaving the show--sm
Why would she suddenly become a host if she could not work out an agreement with CBS? She said she would be back for various shows already set up, but that she was not going to be there day to day...did I miss something?
Party in SF as a send-off for friends leaving for Burning Man.
I'd love go myself, but can't afford it.....
I agree and leaving early not sore loser (sm)
I think that's just graceful, letting the winners have their day plus that had to really sting after the great season they had. But what a great game it was. Both teams should be proud they made it there.
I have been single again as long as I was married and there is not a day I don't regret leaving s
BUT it was still the right thing to do. I have been happier since and I am fine on my own, but it was extremely tough as he didn't pay child support and I could not find a way to make him (not for lack of trying though and a social worker whose job it was to collect his arrears kept telling me no, I didn't really need it!). Financially it was terrible, but the relief of his absence was enormous.
He was critical. He was always rude. My friends would only come to visit when he was on the road. The kids would pick up their messes, but he made more than they ever did, never helped and constantly criticized me for not being a perfect housekeeper like his mom...who didn't work, had a housekeeper and spent her days at the mall shopping. I had more kids than she did, worked always and ended up being too exhausted for him. He is a homophobic homosexual and going out on "mommy and daddy" dates was always humiliating because he spent the evening looking at other men's behinds.
I got out and suffice it to say, at quite a price financially and emotionally. I have not remarried, have only had one relationship in 15 years and feel too damaged to ever try again, but I am FREE from all of that.
My kids were pleased when he left and were all too anxious to help him to leave the house!

Not left to me, just trying to add some help (sm)
He does got to an ESL program regularly at school, but his teacher (and I agree) feels he needs more help. She is questioning whether there may be a learning disability instead of just a language barrier and I am starting to wonder the same thing. I am not in charge of his learning in any way, but I really would love to help him if I can.
My left toolbar only
has "top" "home" and "contact" I will contact the moderator. Thanks for your help!
A decision on this would not be left
up to me at all. This is not something I put my 2 cents in about. Their parents would be the ones to do this, that is unless the daughter/granddaughter is of age where she makes her own decisions. I have both but someone elses decisions, not mine.
no she's not further left than Rosie....
like most of the world.........*lol*
You left one out ----- NO tree.

Sounds like somebody was PO'd to be left - sm
at home. If we leave them inside we gate the dogs into our dining room and utility room (the 2 rooms are connected) so they have 2 rooms to hang in and nothing of any consequence if they decide to chew. Luckily they don't chew on furniture but will rip up what is handy within their reach sometimes. Leave lots of dog toys and give them some rawhides and a pig ear. We had a chewer in the past, she ate a couch (down to the frame).....ended up penning her in the bathroom during the day, hated to do it but it was the only way for her not the chew up the entire house, other than that she was a great dog.
I had a dog once that hated when I left and would eat anything he could get...sm
We put him in an old fashioned wire dog cage and he bent the door down on it and then ate through the wall and then on to my moms sofa, pillows, and rugs. Needless to say mom was not happy with me or Rambo! He was just a stray that got so attached to me he would get angry when I left him. Ended up taking him everywhere I could!!
So you all have left your husband over sm
the same situation? I just need to validate that it's okay for me to feel this way. This has come to a point where it is just ridciulous and he makes me feel like I am wrong for feeling this way or even telling him I can no longer live like this.
I have 3, one on my left biceps, one on
upper chest. I got them all when I was young.
NO! I left mine at
the bridal shop until the day before the wedding even.
I'm so fired up left off, "I don't THINK its right! nm

Well he finally left....sm
He asked when my husband would be home and I said tonight and he left. He is staying somewhere else. He is getting an apartment next week 30 miles away from here he said so I am glad. I hate to say it but I am tired of babysitting. I got to where when he comes and won't leave I just stay in my office.
Left untreated
If nothing else, you would need to see your doctor to get a note for your employer. You would have to stay out of work for at least, the very least, a full week and it should be more. With mono, plenty of rest and staying away from other people is essential.
Left untreated??
It's a virus so there really is no treatment other than supportive, symptomatic care. It's not extremely contagious, as it's spread through saliva and mucus. A doctor or clinic can diagnose it with a Monospot test, and it should run its course in about 4 weeks.
Got any left?? YUMMMM

My younger left at almost 30 and
I hope they do fine and can maintain their own lives outside of mine. I love my own life, I travel quite a bit, do the things I want and to me the child rearing years not half as satisfying as my life is now.
Are you saying you left the dog or dogs
alone at a home, giving them food and water until their parents get back?
sounds as if ( ) DH/SO left her
for a much younger, prettier, 22-year-old. The joke reminds me of one of my favorite Country songs by Billy Ray Cyrus..."Where Am I Gonna Live?"
Where am I gonna live when I get home?
My old lady's thrown out everything I own.
She meant what she said
when she wished I was dead
So, where am I gonna live when I get home?
I knew our road was gettin kinda rocky
She said I was gettin way too cocky
She waited till I was gone
She packed from dusk till dawn
So where am I gonna live when I get home?
She decided she would keep my cat
My transportation, I wouldn't be needing that
She kept my TV
The bills, she gave to me
So, where am I gonna live when I get home?
What money left over?
The man died from what I am hearing insolvent (is that the correct spelling),anyway over $400 million in debt. Not good. They said probably would be worth more dead now than alive. The only reason supposedly he was trying a comeback was that he needed the money. He had, from what I heard, half of the Beatle's porfolio he had not sold and some other rights. By the time his estate pays off what he owes, might be the only thing left for the children would be the album, record sales and a setup like Elvis had. He had sold his Neverland home to pay off debts. The man was broke.
Is he single?? LOL - not many good ones left. nm
