thyroid-replacement medication such as Synthroid. When you're HYPOthyroid, you can feel tired & sluggish, gain a little weight, and possibly feel depressed.

Once I was on Synthroid for a few weeks, my energy level was back to normal, depression eased up, and I got more exercise, so I lost that extra 5-10 lbs. I'd been packing around all winter.

Know from experience that his PCP can easily prescribe something...just ask.
This is very common and can be very confusing for those going through it.  Call your PCP and describe what you are seeing.  They have seen it before and should know how to help.  Don't suffer needlessly (neither of you).  I wish you the best and KNOW there is light at the end of the tunnel...just ask!
I got the doctor to prescribe Wellbutrin
and actually lost 20# when I quit.
I have hypothyroid but do not think have
enough thyroid even to palpate. What are your symptoms?
Hypothyroid. SM

I was just dx hypothyroid and started on Synthroid.  Any one else been through this and have any comments about Synthroid.  Thanks.

Any one hypothyroid? - sm

Just had some blood work and biopsies done (neg) for irregular/too many periods, etc. and came back with a TSH of 10.11, so now off to the endocrinologist (again).  Saw him back in October as it was creeping up then but as I was borderline then at 4 he said it was not worth taking anything and as I hate taking pills I agreed.  Obviously don't really have that choice now, seeing him in two weeks now.  My endo doc actually called me last night to briefly discuss the test results my GYN faxed him, could not believe it, told me that I was right back in October obviously.  However been doing way too much reading on the subject, Synthroid seems to be the drug of choice, but says most people do not lose weight (I have 70-80 pounds to lose) on it, but actually gain 20-30. (something to do with how the body cannot convert the T4 to T3). I cannot afford to gain any more weight.  Of course I could take a higher dose to put myself deliberately into hyperthyroidism but don't think that is the healthiest alternative either.  Anyone out there  have any advice on how to handle this and successfully lose weight?  I do have an acquaintance who is hypothyroid and she exercises 2 hours a day (runs, walks and strength trains) and does not lose weight, has to fight like heck not to gain.  She is only about 10 pounds overweight though, but only about 5Ƈ" so 10 pounds looks like a lot on her.  I am only 5Ɖ" so I don't took too great as it is right now.  So looking to get info on what you take, if it  has help with the tiredness (I am beat by 8 pm or earlier), weight loss, weight gain, side effects, etc.  Thanks!

Pay attention to post above hypothyroid too
because I, after taking Synthroid for years and having the excessive hair loss among other things, came to this board and was told about Armour and I went to my physician and told him that was what I wanted and got onto that. The itching immediately went away, the coldness stays with me as soon as the temperature dips, have cold extremities always in the winter months and as I said before, still have moments of absolute exhausation where I take time to just recline and spend about 30 minutes there. I told my daughter about my diagnosis but could not find on my maternal side a previous diagnosis. Asking my father, he was unable to give me any history on his side so I figured we just ought to do a DNA. Just kidding. Good luck!
Slightly hypothyroid, about 6 months ago I found a lump
in my neck, had the whole workup including thyroid blood work and US guided biopsy which was benign. They put me on Synthroid, which has greatly helped my fatigue, etc. I thought I was just getting old and tired, etc. However, the mass is still there, not any smaller, so they will probably want to remove part of my thyroid sooner or later. If it enlarges they will definitely want to remove it. I would think by having thyroid removed you would actually gain weight unless your thyroid medication is adjusted appropriately?
