Hmmm, less sugar helps your pain? sm

Posted By: mlstoo on 2007-01-06
In Reply to: i find that - just me

Geesh, I'll have to try cutting back. Since the holidays when I way overdid the whole sweets issue, I find my pain has increased signficantly, but I assumed it was due to all the painting I have been doing in addition to all the stress. I take Relafen 200 4 tabs daily and have Darvocet for the more severe pain, but I only use that at night, unless of course I have a nasty daytime headache, then I take one. I only take 1 day ususally. Would like to be able to cut back on both but it hasn't been possible.

I mean come on, when he has pain somewhere, does he not want to do something? Seriously, is this a true medical pain problem? If it is, then anyone could understand.

It all helps!
You know I started using GoodSearch for the group I was interested in and then ended up volunteering. I would not have thought I coulde have such a good time working for free, LOL!
See if this helps.....
I have had a heel spur, on the right that I use for my foot pedal, ouch! Bottom line, it eventually just went away and I was told this is the case sometime. If you are having some kind of foot pain (I was having electrical like currents when I walked on my left foot, no other time) and 1 lady here on MTstars suggested wearing arch supports. I had spent years trying to get some assistance and that finally was my answer. I could hug her neck!! I would definitely try the arch supports, inexpensive and might be the answer.
Thank you so much! It really, really helps to know someone gets it (sm)
I don't know that I am handling it so well. I am scared to death but I am trying to just keep moving forward anyway. I know it is time. I know I can't fix it.
I don't know if it helps to know

you're not the only one in this situation.  I don't have any financial magic wands lying around unfortunately.  What I've been doing for medical care, since I'm also uninsured, is seeing a nurse practitioner at a school-based clinic in my community that operates on a sliding scale, so I only have to pay $20. per visit.  The NP does my Pap smears and lab work, writes my scrips, and refers me for other diagnostics like yearly mammos.  She put me on LexaPro for depression about 2 years ago, which probably saved my sanity and my life.

Are there community-based clinics where you live?  You probably need an antidepressant, at least for the short term.   It will enable you to make constructive decisions and see that the future is not the bleak dead end it appears to be right now.

Take care of yourself.

Credit Unions are less slimy than banks, or you could just skip it altogether and take your money out every time you get paid.

My church collects birthday party decorations, plates, etc. I would go you the church nearest you and ask for some help with the birthday parties.

Sugar free
My husband is diabetic and my oldest son is hyperactive. We use splenda. For Kool-aid we just buy the old fasioned with no sugar and add the splenda. I actually use is everyday. It works in everything except for brownies and fudge and things like that.

We are actually making pecan pie, pumpkin pie, choco-cake and even cranberry sauce for thanksgiving with it. Give it a try we did and it is the only "sugar" in our house now.

Good Luck
No sugar, low fat desserts
My very best friend just found out she has sugar. She is on a low sugar, low fat (carb?) diet. Well, she is coming over tomorrow night and I don't have a clue what to offer. I usually bake something (brownies, omg), so need some help, PLEASE! and thank you...
Sugar Substitutes
Splenda is not a good *sugar free* substitute either. You have to read the packaging. It uses High Frutose Corn Syrup *HFCS*, which is sugar, and an additive that addicts you to eating more with cravings. I have done alot of research on this subject, as I want to live a healthy life without government/pharmaceutical intervention. I care about what I eat and you would be AMAZED at how much the upper eschelon is not telling the american public about what is being added to our food. I have learned that Xylitol is the only safe sugar substitute that does not include high fructose corn syrup. try to keep in mind the great cigarette coverup concerning nicotine and other additives to keep people addicted to and buying their products. the same is true with our food, hence obesity/diabetes/other illnesses attributable to food additives such as hormones and growth stimulators. be aware. JMO.
try going sugar free if you can - sm

no sugar made me feel 20 years younger.  sounds strange but it is true.

if you are presently on sugar, it will be hard for a few days, but really worth it.  i personally cannot do a gradual weaning off sugar but need to go cold turkey.  same with white foods - white bread, white flour, white crackers, white whatever.  i eat protein, protein, protein when getting off sugar.  fish, skinless boneless chicken, every 1/2 hour if you are hungry. after a day or two, you will not want sugar or white foods.  you will be satisfied with lean protein - the less beef the better - and vegetables.  and no milk or milk products.  sounds strange, i know, but i would be willing to bet my next paycheck that you would feel 150% better.  eat like that for awhile and then start adding back in the foods you cut out.  one at a time.  gradually.  maybe one food every 2 weeks.  and notice how you feel.  your body will tell you what it does not like.  yogurt was the first food i added back in and right away my nose started running, clear drainage, knew that i could not handle yogurt.

that is just what i have done and what works for me.  not medical advice at all.  just my experience.

RE sugar in diet

When my mother was dx as being diabetic, I started using sweetener substitutes, thinking that would be better than real sugar.  Dr. Gott, a physician who responds to letters much like Dear Abby in our local newspaper, had a patient write in that when she went on vacation and no longer used the sweeteners during that time, her leg pain went away. When she got back from vacation and started drinking her diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, her pain came back.  She was able to determine that she has an "allergy" to the stuff.  I only drank one diet soda a day and one cup of tea with artificial sweetener a day, but I thought I'd try this with my leg pain/issues.  Hard to believe, but it's made a world of difference.  I've been 3 weeks without the stuff and can't believe the difference.

Dr. Gott is a supporter of the no flour, no sugar diet. If it contains flour or sugar, to not eat it.  A lot of people have wrote to him with success with being on the diet. I did it for a while, did great, but like all diets I didn't make it a lifelong commitment.

Oh that's right! Carrots have sugar don't they? sm
Peas do too, another of my favorites right along with the oranges, bananas and grapes I have in the fridge. Sigh. Guess I had better get a book on low sugar cooking since I will be taking high doses of corticosteroids again real soon. That will certainly send my glucose into orbit.
Sugar Cookies

Is anyone out there a good baker?  Looking for a good recipe for the B I G sugar cookies, not those small ones you can buy, slice and bake at the store.   I think some also call them sour cream cookies . . . not sure.  They are about 3 inches round and maybe 1/2 inch high.  You can top them with icing or sprinkles or colored sugars.  Thanks in advance.

Thank you! I will try this very soon. Sounds Yummy!!!!

hmmm, that is too bad...

I feel that way about my mother - I love her but I don't usually like her that much!  She just acts so childish and selfish most of the time, but she took good care of me when I was younger, and I definitely respect her for that.  I know she'll always be there for me too, which is a wonderful thing.  I guess I do like her half the time, but she really drives me nuts!

How old is your daughter?  Maybe you could sit her down and explain to her that while friends come and go family is forever, and you are the one she will most likely come to when her life falls apart or she just goes through hard times.  Tell her you would appreciate it if she would compromise with you on the dog thing - tell her it is her business, really, but you just want to help and purchase a doghouse for the dog.  Apologize for maybe coming across the wrong way, but let her know your heart is in the right place here, and maybe you can't save the world, but this is a situation you can help with and that's all you're trying to do.

She may just be hypersensitive when it comes to you and might be holding onto old grudges or trying to get back at you for controlling her when she was younger or something - I don't know.  Obviously you know her best, and if you think she'll freak out about a doghouse then maybe you're right, but I think it would be sad to ruin your relationship over a dog (my mom didn't talk to her mom for 2 years over a dog, and it was hard on the whole family!)  Sometimes I think difficult people are put into our lives to make us stronger, better people, and it definitely sounds like you two are pushing each other to change/better yourselves.  Sorry, I'm rambling, and I definitely don't have all the answers, but I wish you the best of luck with the situation!

N/T - hmmm let's see
They haven't shown Kimber and/or Matt in a while. Kimber is on tonight's episode. She got involved in porno again and is divorcing Matt. She told him she never loved him. The baby is with her and her new boyfriend (Bo Duke a/k/a John Schneider, who is the head of the porn studio). At one point Christian said that he wanted her to give up the baby, and she agreed, but of course the next thing you know she changed her mind and no one is doing anything about it. Matt blew himself up in a homemade Meth Lab and now he's getting clean. Julia can't decide whether she wants to be a lesbian or be with Christian although they supposed now love each other. The only problem is, Julia hasn't told Olivia yet. She hasn't been on in a really long time either.

Sorry so long. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me. Oh, and next week is the last episode for a while.
Hmmm

"I always have the mentality of not having enough money although realistically this is not the case"

You know...most people who feel they don't have the money don't generally take three vacations in one year.  Just a thought.

hmmm
Whether or not they have insurance, if I knew they were taking a trip under the influence, I would make a call the local police department. They could kill someone.

Hmmm
From this post, my reaction is that she doesn't sound self-centered to me if she offered to take him in her house. That can be some hard work to take on. It sounds like she has the way she would take care of him and you have the way you would take care of him, and both your ways are different. That does not make her selfish, IMO. She is contributing the way she sees fit, and you are contributing the way you see fit.

Unfortunately, this is a pickle. If he is unable to care for himself because of all his conditions, there has to be some sort of compromise with his situation, meaning he will have to change his living arrangements in some way with home health or something along those lines OR change where he is living. I am not sure what his level of disability is from the post, because while blindness is a disability, it does not mean one cannot live by himself. I don't know how far the RA or heart problems are from your post.

You can take him to his PCP and he or she may have some ideas for you and some decent referrals as well.
Hmmm
She usually drinks the sparkling water with lime if I remember correctly but she has been eyeing the alcohol lately. Catherine has seen her and is the only reason why she hasn't drank since this whole David thing so maybe she fell off the wagon again. I bet David tries to say she was committing suicide.
Hmmm....
I think that is a weird attitude to have toward your child.  Unfortunately, he is going to be out there is society doing these behaviors that make him so intolerable at home.  It is your responsibility as his parent to ensure that he is fit for society so that he can be accepted and successful.  Kicking him out on the road when he's 18 is not the answer.  I have a 19-year-old and there were days that I was counting down until he went away to college, but no matter what, he's still my son.  He is actually starting to act like a human this year, so there is hope.  Just make sure you keep your heart open to him and not just wish he was gone.  He can feel that from you and will resent you for it.  You only get to do this once, so do your best, not just enough to get him by until he's 18.  I don't want to sound judgmental, but your post does sound a bit harsh.  Beleive me, I have also had my moments that I was more than harsh with my son, but make sure you give a lot of love too.
Hmmm
I read the book also and never thought of that but that is a very good point!

I would not call it life-changing for me more thought provoking.
Hmmm...there have been so many
In high school I worked for the summer at a greenhouse. I was hired to clean it. We all know how much dirt plants have, but would anyone imagine how much dirt gets up in the support beams to the roof of a greenhouse?

I used to be a dogsitter and a house sitter for about 6 months when I was 18.

I worked in a college cafeteria.

I worked in a laundromat cleaning machines...that was kinda gross.

I worked 5 years as a CNA/CMA.

Oh, my most interesting one must have been when I worked for a year driving an 18-wheeler. You see just about anything/everything doing that. I can't tell those stories on here.
Hmmm, let's try it
Frontwards: SIS
BACKWARDS: SIS
Upside down: SIS

Doesn't matter I guess unless you turn the S backwards too. Upside down S is still S.
Hmmm ...
I don't think there is anything wrong with questioning God. He did give us minds and feelings after all.

It seems you are also being a bit self-righteous in telling someone if they don't believe in God it is the least of their problems.

No one knows for sure what the truth is and plenty of "God-fearing" people have huge issues ... of course they get Heaven as their consolation prize, don't they? Well, if they believe in the Christian God that is.

Not that it matters, but I have been a vegetarian basically since I was 15 (give or take a few smokey links in the few years after). I am now almost 50.

The meat I do think sounds good once in awhile is bacon. Seems like an odd choice, but it must be the texture and strong flavor.

I must be lonely, as I want to tell a little story. Some friends once rescued an ill runt from a litter of pigs. The husband made my girlfriend agree they would nurture it to healh and raise it to eat. She agreed even though she would have rather kept it for a pet.

When it grew up, they butchered it and put it in a big freezer in their basement. One day they noticed something smelled really nasty. Come to find out, one of their sons (whose room was in the basement) unplugged it for some reason, and all the meat was ruined!

The really sad part is that one of their dogs had made friends with that pig when it was little. They used to lie together and play. It was so cute.
Let me see, hmmm
No sweetners, no soy products, use sea salt only, not the blue box lady under the umbrella type, have filter on the water. No weight loss, still hair loss, dry skin. Glad it worked for you.
hmmm... I'm right along with ya..
as if all the junk he's putting your daughter through isn't bad enough, the part about him asking for money before he could pray for this lady.. apparently he is doing this for all the WRONG reasons.. I think he has major problems in more ways than one
I take a 20 minute nap and that helps when I get like this.

I think it helps to plan.
Even if that would be for 7 days.  I like to somewhat plan, and then deviate when needed.  Staples are pretty much always on hand.  For something different, I'll look at cookbooks and write down the ingredients adding them to my shopping list.  I think having a list and pretty much knowing what you want to cook each day is a good way to save money and curb overspending on none-such items.  I am battling with getting my kids to eat more fruits and veggies, so I am having that struggle (should be eating more rice and not so many potatoes).  Good luck....
Hope this helps :)

I have a teenage daughter; we live in the Midwest, just outside the Twin Cities.  Being fashionable can be so hard, especially on a budget.  So I hope this will help... :)

As far as hair, definitely a little longer hairstyle, but not too long... yes, shaggy is in, but it has to be a groomed shaggy.

For clothing, the boys in this area in that age group are wearing anything from casual preppy with brands like Abercrombie, Hollister, and American Eagle, to skateboard punk, with brands like Volcom, etc.  Also, "rock" T-shirts are in.

I support my children off my income as a QA person, so it can be hard to get those pricier brand name items.  Target has a lot of nice things that are very fashionable and look like the higher end brands without the cost.  Also, we have a store called Plato's Closet nearby.  It is like a consignment shop, but they purchase the used clothes directly from people instead of on a pay you if it sells basis, and they are SUPER picky... they only pick the best items in great condition that are CURRENT and TRENDY.  If you have something like that in your area, it is a GREAT resource... Also, TJ Maxx carries designer items at lower prices, usually they are overstocks.  I buy for my daughters this way, and they get tons of compliments on their wardrobes... no one would ever know that I spent probably LESS than I would have if I bought their clothes from Walmart.

Good luck!!!  Have fun with the makeover!  :)

time is what helps
The first year is the hardest. You have to go through the first xmas, the first birthday, etc. It slowly gets a little easier. My dad died 11 years ago and I still miss him. Sometimes the littlest thing will remind me of him and I just will start crying. I found reading books on the stages of grief helped. Take care.
Yep...taking something for that which helps a lot though (sm)
Trouble sleeping, etc. Mostly get a restless feeling during the day...bored, want to do something different, need to think about multiple things at once. Want to hear the TV and work and still daydreaming about other things at the same time!
I know a lot about this - hope this helps
The first question I need to ask you is if DCFS will be keeping the case open on the 16 MO since they stepped in and the g'ma agreed to take the 3 children. This is important because if there is an open case, you will need to go through them to get legal custody (you shouldn't have a problem since the g'ma asked for your help). If you get the 16 mo, since you are within 5 generations related to the child, you would be considered kinship care, not foster care. You could then apply for TANF (Temporary Aid for Needy Families) which would give you a small stipend per month (how much depends on the state where you live). The child would be considered a household of 1 and have no income, thus qualifying for this benefit. In addition, the child would get Medicaid and WIC benefit. WIC would drop when the child starts school and then would receive free meals at school. Since you know the child has some issues, Medicaid will pay for services, including any counseling for the child and for you. You would have to cooperate with the state in getting a child support order to help pay the state back for these services.

There is a federal law that requires the state to place the kids with relatives first and special attention given to a sibling situation, trying to keep all the kids together when possible. The law also requires that the state (if a case is open) to help the parents reunite by providing drug rehab, parenting classes, regular visitations, etc. BUT, if the child(ren) are kept in the system for 15 out of 24 months and the parents are not reunified by this time, the state is to find adoptive families. They consider relatives adopting first, but if relatives won't/can't adopt (you would lose all the state benefits), they try to place with non-relative adoptions, again trying to keep all the siblings together.

You would not be considered foster care unless you went through the FC system and the classes and became certified. States give more help and money to FC parents, but you also have no guarantees that once the child becomes attached to you (and you to the child), that you would get to adopt the child after the 15/24 rule...so you risk losing the child being a FC parent.

I am in the process of adopting my granddaughter. Drugs didn't come into play until she was over 2 years old, but she remembers that her mom dumped her on me and we just finished 10 months of counseling to deal with those issues (she is 4 now).

If you want to write me privately, I'd be glad to help. It really is a challenge.

There is a website for people in this situation and I have gotten tremendous support from the people there. Go to www.grandsplace.org and read some of the resources there.

Best of luck to you. Over 5 million kids are in kinship care now...a very sad statistic.
Thank you -- it helps just knowing

I'm not the only one with a child like this.  What I did learn from the child psychologist is that I have 2 other children who react normally to discontentment.  Yes, they get angry and occasionally fight, but not to the extent that this one does.

I have threatened to call the police but never have.  Maybe 1 of these times I will.  I sympathize with you in your plight.  I hope things continue to go well for you and your son.  Thank you.
