Again - We live in a very rural area
Our cats were not only our pets, they served a purpose too. We have fields all around the house and the cats kept mice out of the barns and out of our house. We had our cats for 10+ years and they did just fine until SILs dogs moved back to town with her.
My animals are all checked regularly by the vet because we live on a farm. They probably see the vet more often than I visit the doctor for my checkups.
It is unbelievable how many nasty witches come out on this board when a person asks for a suggestion to help with a problem.
Everyone is such an animal lover but so quick to kill an animal or cut off ties with a family member because of an animal. Talk about double standards.
She loves her dogs like they are her children.
Not one single person who has responded with a nasty comment even came close to making a suggestion that would satisfy.
KILL THE DOG! DON'T GET ANY MORE CATS! That's it?
A friend just suggested that the SIL's dogs be kept in a kennel/dog run if she absolutely must keep her dogs up here.
WOW! How's that for a humane solution.
For all of you out there who were so nasty. Try to put this in perspective.
Since she cares for her dogs like they were her children, think of it that way.
I may not like her dogs because the one killed my cats but I was trying to be mindful of how she felt about her dogs too, as I feel about my children.
Forgot to add what area I live in...sm

Anyone live in NY City, Long Island, New Jersey area?
I have a question. If I fly to Long Island/Islip (Southwest) but really want to get to Jersey City, is there an airport shuttle or bus or something that I could take to Jersey City? And do you have any idea how much that would cost? I am not even sure where in Jersey City I need to get, probably a train station. Local train, not Amtrak, not sure what they call it there, maybe "path" or something like that.
A ballpark idea would be helpful, especially since I am not even sure where I need to get in JC.
TIA!
I live in the Kansas City area. If you google habitat for humanity website
you can put in her zip code and it will search for the nearest re-store. It's pretty awesome. It's a big warehouse down in the industrial area of my city. You just walk in and start looking. I was thinking of doing ceramic tile on my kitchen floor cause they had a ton of it cheap. Next Wednesday, the 22nd, kitchen cabinets are 25% off, although alot of the cabinetry looked a little rough. Some of the stuff is things they have salvaged from other remodels.
I'm getting pretty psyched up about all this! I'm one of those women that loves using tools, especially power tools!
Not mentioned, but a family member loves the Myrtle Beach area, very metroplitan, but they live

Oh what memories you just brought back - Cortland, Syracuse. I attended college sm
at Syracuse years ago...met a man from the south, got married, and have lived down here ever since. I grew up in Rome, NY, if you are familiar...Am planning a trip up there with the entire family who, ironically, has never been up there before. We are going to probably stay in Syracuse and then drive to VT where I have family also. I can't wait for my husband and kids to see the Adirondacks in person and show them the house I grew up in.
I think we are going to wait until spring because of all the snow up there..stay safe, stay warm and cuddly, and know that I envy you. I haven't seen snow in over 10 years!!

Anybody keeping up with the news about the TV reporter stabbed and beaten in Arkansas? I just wonder if her purse is in the trunk of her car and if anybody looked there.
reporter
Not sure what you mean by that- care to explain? I'm wondering how she is doing?
Arkansas reporter
The last I heard is they think now she's going to be alright.
I do live in Arkansas - my parents live up in Branson so I'm in Missouri quite often!

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm
I have a dilemma. I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about. At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food. This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed. I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him. Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him. Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously). I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety. I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care. At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment. Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold? I know there are lots of animal lovers out there. What does everyone think??
I'm a live-and-let-live person but had to draw the line
after I found HUGE holes in the walkway between my house and barn. I thought they were just little mice stealing grain, but then I spotted one and it was a HONKIN RAT! My poor olderly cat was out there with me at the time and saw it, and he hissed at it and ran away!
I asked for advice on what to do at a local agricultural board, because I have other animals and didn't want to use poison and conventional traps weren't working. They advised putting a large pale of water out with some seeds floating in it, figuring the rats would go for the seeds and end up drowning. That was a no-go because the water just froze up solid. I wound up reluctantly going with Decon because I just can't have my house destroyed. I haven't had seen any more rats or evidence of them stealing grain, so I'm guessing they have died. The guy at the grain store promised me the rats would not die in the building and stink the joint up, rather they would crawl off and die outside. I don't know if I believe that, as it is still winter here and decomposition would be holding off until it warms up. We'll see, but at least the destruction has been halted.
Good luck and I too say have no mercy, because you just don't need them destroying hour house or causing a spark chewing wires and burnin' the place down. It is war!
(How un-PC is this emoticon?!)
Make them live outside? This is so funny! Ours live outside, where they WANT to be. sm
Not all dogs want to be in "indoor" dogs, mind you. They have plenty of space to run around and play, fenced, and if they are brought in during bad weather they whine at the back door to go back out! So before you comment on outside dogs, you really need to get your facts straight. Seriously. Not all dogs are made or want to be inside all of the time.
Yep, we have it in our area.
Central PA, lots of Pennsylvania Dutch. My husband's family owns a butcher shop and they make and sell a lot of scrapple. I personally don't like it. And yes, I do believe it is made from scraps. I can double check if anyone REALLY wants to know. LOL!
I don't know what area you are from, but..
around here you can buy gift cards from grocery stores that give gas perks and earn points towards getting cheaper gas. A lot of them sell a wide variety of giftcards.
KC area
We live in the Kansas City area, my daughter's school had a threatening note found in the bathroom, now have metal detectors and police on campus, another county close by had all schools shut down due to bomb threat, but get this, the person suspected is not a kid, he is 47 years old. In the last 1-1/2 days, have had 4 schools in this area shut down because of bomb threats. It is getting too scary to even send your child to school, can you imagine what it is going to be like in another 10 years?
NMB area, what area are you in..?
Don't know if available in your area but...
you may want to check at your local WalMart for a NET 10 phone. In our area the NET 10 is a lot cheaper, .10 a minute compared to .25 a minute, and NET 10 and Trac are both made and serviced by the same company. May be different in your area, but worth a look? We tried the Trac phones first because we did not know about NET 10. The NET 10 phones are much better quality, they cost just a little more, and they seem to pick up in more areas, we have a lot of mountains. You can even go to the website and buy minutes, NET10.com. With the prepaid phones, it sure teaches the kids how to manage minutes, they hate to carry my phone if they run out. Costs me about $15.00 a month per phone because once the minutes are up, they have to wait until new airtime is due to get more minutes. Trac and NET 10 both do roll over unused minutes not used when you buy new airtime. Even our local dollar store carries the airtime cards, and once set up it is easy to add minutes. Just make sure you add minutes by the due date or you have to call the company and have the phone reset. That can be a pain.
area
It was at a place called Riverside park in a very populated area.
I'm in FL too but in an area where they don't do this.
I'm in Miami-Dade for 30 years and they don't paddle here in the public schools nor do they make you write 100-200 times the same sentence. Yes, the school system after elementary school is absolutely awful here, but they don't paddle. My kids went through the entire system here and came out FINE....though the entire time, even in elementary school, there were 40+ kids in every classroom....and is another reason why the system here is awful.....My kids were never late to school and got awards for attendance until getting to HS. Things changed then but they got over it and are pushing 30 and are well-rounded hard-working individuals.....Their best education was obtained in the home, I must say in this particular case. *grins*
In my area it is *70 and turns it off just for..
that call. If that doesn't work look in the front of your white pages telephone book and it should give you the code for your area.
Is there a dog rescue in your area?
I would call them ASAP. They will probably know exactly what is going on with her. They may have meds to treat her too.
any MTs in Shelbyville, KY area?
x
are you in Louisville, KY area?
Our soon-to-grad daughter will be relocating to that area and needs to find a home ASAP, preferably in surrounding countryside, where she can keep a horse and dogs, etc. Do you know of anything that might not be on the market yet, for example? A very good realtor? thanks.
Rural area also
I also live in a rural area and have a farm. Unfortunately a lot of people are moving to this area and since it is rural, decide that they can let their dogs "roam free" which means I have a lot of livestock killed. The owners, when notified, say that their baby could not possibly be responsible for the carnage and refuse to pay. I lost $4,000 worth of registered pregnant ewes (not counting the value of the fetal lambs) in one evening to a black lab which I shot and killed. Now I don't bother to give the owners a warning, I just shoot every dog that I find on my property unless it's something like a toy poodle.
$3.19 in Louisville area
but our gas is supposedly "increased" because of the Derby this weekend. Yesterday afternoon I saw it for $2.98 and was not able to stop and get it then. Planned to on the way home. Three to four hours later - it was $3.19!! - just like the rest.
When is school out in your area? sm
It's Friday here for the Atlanta area. One child is eager for the last day to arrive and the other doesn't want to school to end because she'll miss seeing her friends each day.
Tx, will check them out in my area. NM

We are also fortunate here in our area...
we have a small (1500 sf) home, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, will be remodeling the bath and kitchen in the next year and adding 2 rooms upstairs. We live on 15 acres, have a 4-stall horse barn, a shop, a beautiful view, live in the country, mortgage is only 1100 a month and property taxes are less than 1000 a year. My dh only paid 185,000 for the place and it is now appraised at over 350,000. Used to live in California, so know the whole story about home prices there. We have Californians who migrate here and buy houses sometimes just by seeing a picture on the internet, never even come up to look at it in person.
Could you just put a blanket or something over that area?
?
Anyone in the Houston area? sm
I've been wanting to share this story with you guys for a while now, but just haven't. Anyways, as a mom with young boys, this breaks my heart. A local 15 year old boy was diagnosed on June 1 with a brain stem glioma. He is the son of a local pastor and their family is just precious. They are believing that their son will be healed, but he's got such a long road. He's undergoing experimental treatment in Houston (they just arrived tonight) and will be there for 3 weeks. Insurance won't cover this since it's experimental. He was such a lively young boy before all of this. Anyways, if you are in Houston I'd love to chat with you - maybe if you belong to a large church or something like that - you could help me in some way. Thanks!
Do you have ask a nurse in your area?
I don't believe this is mental illness... it could be something else. In my area, you can call the local hospital's ask a nurse for free advice, and believe me they are there not to get more business, but to give good medical advice in case you need to really see someone. Bipolar is different. SOunds like getting older mixed with stress. I know I am that age with small children and I forget my glasses are on my head! But you definitely should seek medical advice because he might have a form of dementia, not necessarily Alzheimer, but maybe something which can take medication, vitamins, or a certain type of balanced diet with stress training. Good luck!
He was here in our area last night. sm
I didn't get to go (tears). His opening act is Little Big Town my new fav. band. I am doubly jealous. Hope your have a terrrrific time!
Sorry I am not familar with your area sm
but I was wondering why you don't want her to use Accutane?
Is there an SPCA in your area?...sm
or even the Humane Society. Either one would more than likely help the poor pup out. If the "owners" don't do something and someone else reports it, they could face huge fines and charges of animal cruelty and neglect. I really think either one of those places will help w/o taking the animal from them, especially if they tell them it was a stray they took in. They often will even throw in a bag of dog food, too. I hope all works out for them. I think, also, the Humane Society offers vet care at a discounted price, maybe based on income, I'm not sure.
They said they weren't available in my area...
I don't understand that at all!
No, not in that area. But just shows that this goes on everywhere. nm

$3.50 a box in our area. It does vary
from place to place.
Is he local to your area?
I've never been in this situation, but if he's newly widowed, perhaps a casserole and a card would be more practical for him than a plant or flowers?
If he's not in your immediate area, maybe you could send him some type of food/snack basket.
I don't know why I keep thinking in the direction of food. I guess I assume being newly widowed and apparently elderly, he might not be in a suitable frame of mind to take care of his nutritional needs. There are so many heartbreaking stories of an elderly spouse passing, and the one left behind simply stops taking care of their own needs and pass shortly thereafter.
I'm not good at dealing with situations involving death, so maybe my suggestions totally suck and someone will have some better advice.
I hope your niece is holding up okay.
One cannot use Botox around the lip area
because it can cause the muscles around the mouth to not work right. I know because I have used Botox on my forehead and have also gone the plastic surgery route, both in facelift, breast lift, tummy tuck, and arm lifts. I do not believe in accepting aging gracefully. I hate bags under the eyes, sagging chin, drooping breasts and so on.
Do you have kijiji.com in your area? sm
I had a brindle chihuahua that was getting to be more than our family could handle. I listed him on kijiji, which is a free classified ad service, and sold him within one day. At least in my area, there are always younger and older cats and dogs, some free, some for high prices, but also many like I just sold. Just a thought.
Where do you live?? I live in Atlanta
and have been to the symphony here and definitely no hats- you can never go wrong with black dress/slacks. I like to dress a little more for this but the rules are definitely not prim and proper here.
I come from the old school, but live and let live - sm
Well, I tried "cohabitating" with a boyfriend when I was 22. We dated for a year, and 3 weeks after we moved in together, he went back to his ex-wife. Never again. I've been married 18 years now to the same guy. Guess I lucked out.
I don't think it's right to do in a biblical sense (even felt that way when I moved in with a guy but my young hormones took over my common sense) but it's sad more people aren't married, they choose to just live together without a great commitment. Then again, as my atty (he lives at the end of our street so I see him often when walking the dogs) always says, his father told him it should be $5,000 for a marriage license and free to get divorced.
As far as the children are concerned, well, I think you should be married before you have children but again, live and let live. I just don't like seeing children have to grow up without the other parent if it can be helped.
The NFL network recently interviewed a former NFL player, Warren Sapp. He was asked why we have so many jerks in the NFL like Terrell Owens, Adam Pacman Jones, etc. He said they all shared a common factor - no father or father figure in their lives growing up. He said to look at players who are humble and don't cause trouble - they are the product of a 2 parent household. It's sad to me because it's commonplace now, not the exception to rule, which I think it should be. I graduated high school in 1985 and even back then, a girl in school who got pregnant got sent away "to live with her aunt for a little while". It was a shame to be pregnant and unmarried but it's a sign of the times.
I sometimes wish I could have grown up in the 50s instead of 70s. :-)
$2.04 in the Atlanta area. It was $2.15 last week. nm
.
Think it greatly depends on the area
you live in. I was paying $25 30 years ago in Reno, Nevada; now charged $15 in small town Northern California - of course hairdressers and MTs have both lost wages in the last 10-15 years because of SuperCuts and outsourcing in my opinion. I was charged $15 my last cut and she did such a fantastic job I gave her $25 just to make up for all the bad cuts I have gotten and to let her know how much I appreciated her!
In our area, there is a program called
"Mended Hearts". I am not sure if this is nationwide, but there are volunteers that will come out who have had the surgery, and they talk about how far they've come. Another option, I guess would be cardiac rehab, and I am wondering if that would lend some support as maybe he feels a little alone in his quest? Best of luck and hope he finds his way soon.
Disney area restaurants??
I'm going to Disney World with my family next week and would love to have some opinions on restaurants close or in the parks. A friend of mine told me about some restaurant where they "throw" food at you and the servers are kinda silly, but she couldn't remember the name of the place. I have an 8 y/o daughter and this is our first trip to Disney World, so would love to make it as fun as possible. Thanks for any suggestions!
There is a funeral in our area this weekend for ...
a soldier killed in Iraq and just found out those wonderful people from Kansas are planning to attend.
I have lived in the area for over 40 years
and I know exactly where this is and I drive the freeways all the time, including the HOV (which is a lane for more than 1 person in a vehicle to use or a motorcycle driver). The lanes are to the left-hand side of the others and the bus driver apparently took the wrong lane. Ther are 2 there that run side by side, 1 goes straight on thru Atlanta and the 1 he took is the exit lane and apparently exiting at a high rate of speed (i.e. your average speed on the freeways) he was totally unable to make the stop at the top of the freeway. There are 2 lanes there, 1 directly ahead and the 1 he took has a stop sign at the top for a turn either right or left. So unfortunate for these people and our hearts have gone out to them.
call some relators in your area and have them - sm
come out to your house and appraise it. They do this for free (in the hopes of getting the listing). This way you can meet a couple of them, see who you like, have an idea of the value and when you are ready to sell then give the one you liked the most a call and get it listed.
Be very careful - two people from this area
have been murdered there. Apparently not too far off the beaten path, if at all.
