Everybody has an accent, the accent where one lives...nm

Ethnic variety/languages. What's yours?
I'm just curious.
I am a Germanic blend. The Scandinavians are actually one of the original Germanic tribes. I was born in Sweden, raised in Norway, had German Father and live in the US. I learned Swedish and Norwegian at the same time, English later and can fling a phrase or two in German. (Tho I read it better, if slowly, than I could ever speak it.) My preferred method of communication is actually what a friend refers to as "Swenglish" but is a weird mix of all my favorite languages.
I consider myself a Scandinavian, but I am a Californian as well. This is my home now, even if I do sometimes pine for the fjords. (Gratuitous Monty Python reference, for you slow types!)
I have actually met people who do not know where their ancestors hailed from! That is inconceivable to me!
So, tell me about your family and language, please. I find this kind of thing interesting.
Where are you from? Where did your ancestors come from? What language do you speak in the home growing up? What language do you speak now in your home?
Like I said, just curious.
Take it easy! How many languages do you speak? ..sm
Give some respect to people who are bilingual and even trilingual.
MTing is probabaly the only thing you can do!
The OP complained only about the position of the month and day in the date, geez!
My car is foreign...sm
I have always owned foeign cars. I currently drive a new Kia Spectra. I just bought it in May of this year. I am quite proud of it. It gets great mileage for me especially on road trips. I drove a VW New Beetle before I got the Kia, and I currently have it up for sale right now. It was a 99 model. Before the VW, I had a Toyota Corolla. Those are great cars. Before the Corolla I had a Toyota Camry. Before the Camry I had a Mitsibishi Eclipse. My first car was a Toyota Tercel. I don't have anything against American I just always like the cars I picked.
Foreign Films . . .
My Favorite - "Raise the Red Lantern". Also, "My Life in Pink".
Foreign dictators
I am getting a string of foreign dictators, the kind who can barely speak English. On top of that, they are disorganized, mumbly. It just irks me that I have to lose money listening to their rambling, unintelligible gibberish, long pauses. They have sick people in their own countries, why aren't they there taking care of them? I get 2 or 3 of these people and my line count goes right down the tubes.
I don't want to hear from you bleeding hearts - all the mularkey about we are all immigrants, etc. I don't want to hear about how your favorite dictators are foreigners. I'm not talking about dictators with accents, I'm talking about doctors who cannot speak decent English and yet are allowed to practice here.
Is your car foreign or American?
I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu Maxx. My last car is a 93 Buick Century wagon. I sold it to my nephew and he's still driving it. My car before that was a 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx.
Both Maxxes have 3.5 motors. I'm squeezing out an average of 24 mpg. I do mostly city driving. On a road trip last month the average was 38.6 mpg. The Buick wagon has a 3.3. The car is bigger so the mileage was lower but around 18 mpg.
I have not owned a foreign car since 1996.
I used to own only foreign cars
I had Mazdas when I was younger. Then I married my husband, and he works for a Chrysler/Jeep dealship so no more foreign cars for me, but I do love my Jeep.
I have never owned a foreign car.
My old 1991 Dodge pickup has 450,000 miles on it and I bet it will see half a million. It is a 3/4 ton pickup and still averages about 23 miles to the gallon. Can't beat that. Also have a 2005 Ford F250 and a 2008 Dodge Charger that I am in love with.
Do you have an accent?
When I went to Southern Tennessee with DD2 to look at a college, I was surprised that I wasn't hearing much of a Southern accent in the people around me. They all pretty much sounded like me.
Are accents dying out? Do you have an accent?
lol, also her, I mean I know what an accent
is, but what is a 'fake accent?'
Somebody who tries to have an accent?
when your ancestors came here from foreign lands
face what you're suggesting? (and I'm not talking about the situation with Mexico, rather ALL foreign countries actually)
ALL your relatives/kin came from some foreign land, that is unless you are a Native American. Think y'all better think before you type on this subject...and try to remember what all your grandparents or great-grandparents, (or even some parents today) had to go through so that YOU all can live and be free (and some of them did not do it legally)....Think Ellis Island...for one place.... where everyone just GRABBED names.....
those who live in glass houses or lived in glass houses via ancestry should never throw stones.....
I think, JMO, that we should CLOSE THE DOORS TO EVERYBODY.....and then get rid of the wet-foot-dry-foot policy ongoing in Florida too that merely caters to the Cubans......and to nobody else trying to escape their country(ies) for the same exact reasons (sociopolitcoeconomical reasons) as the Cubans. We should close our borders because of running out of natural resources and we already are having problems taking care of our own.
jes' my nickel's worth....LOL
I have traveled to foreign countries,
went to Greece just with my daughter when she was 12 and have visited lots of other countries just me and the children when they were young. I drive out of state frequently as have family in another state. I also go on vacations with meeting up with tours, people I don’t know but get to know with the time spent with them. I love traveling and if I want on DH to go, would never get around to it. I never fear traveling alone, have a good auto and go!
SIL foreign booty call.
My SIL is on a plane right now flying from Texas to France then to Cairo, Egypt to meet a man she met on second life. (A website/chat room/game). She and my bro always talk about how they cannot afford to get their car fixed, lawnmower fixed and 3 months ago brother told me that they cannot afford their house payment so they refinanced; but she managed to scrape up the money and do this....and worse my brother is standing by her because he does not believe in divorce. Another thing is they have 2 young children she left behind to go on her booty call.
Bro is trying to convince himself and me that she is merely on vacation. He said he cried when she left; and when I called him he said he had been sitting in front of his computer tracking down flights to see exactly where she is (there is evidently a website that does this). I said "I wonder how much time she is wasting wondering what you and the boys are doing." I cannot believe my SIL is that crazy. She is in her mid 30s. I can see a teenager wanting to do this. If she is not concerned about her H or kids, then she should be concerned about her own life. I thought Egypt was one of those countries were crimes against women were taken very lightly...I could be wrong. I thought human rights in general were taken lightly. I mentioned this to brother that I would be afraid that he might be luring her there and going to keep her as a slave. Brother said well, stuff like that happens here too. I said and this is why you travel in a group, not alone like she is. I don’t know if she is lodging with him or in a hotel/motel nearby. Knowing her stupidity now and her limited means, she is probably lodging with him.
She also runs around until 3 to 4 in the morning with a local/newly divorced man. I tried to convince my brother that we are there for him, he is not alone. He does not have to go through this emotional torture but he must be the co-dependent type and wants to hang on.
77 lincoln and 93 mercury -- never foreign
the Lincoln is currently in storage, as 8 mph is not really practical. never had a foreign car, was raised by dad to never do such a thing
So we should now ALSO be experts on every foreign culture?
nm
VERY hard when the names are foreign! DUH.

If her accent is grating, you must
xx
Isn't it weird how when you have an accent...sm
you don't know it until you get around other people who are not southern? People up north don't realize they have the northern accent until they come down here I guess.
this has been extremely trying on all fronts-
she always had a DD - and I asked her if she did not that night - she did - but she only had 1 beer and assumed she was okay - but the cops sit outside the bar and watched her - and unfortunately she is gorgeous and I am sure that is part of the reason he decided to follow her. He just pulled her over without any infraction. I think most of us assume that 1 drink is okay but she is very tiny and she learned the hard way that it wasn't the case. Taking away licenses doesn't prevent the chronic offenders or chronic alcoholics from driving again because they really don't care. Since I have done trauma and pain management transcription I am quite aware that a very high percentage of people driving are under the influence - frightening!
I use it for extremely dry skin -
have a spray of it that I use on my arms legs, feet right after a shower when still a little damp, and I love it. It helps more than several lotions.
She is extremely needy.
xx
IMO. she's extremely attractive, but....sm
She's fixing to have the majority of Americans come down on her like white on rice for that little error. :D :D
I agree - and in a foreign country nonetheless! (sm)
What if she woke up and wandered out or if there was a fire or if someone came in and got her? No way in this world would I have done that. I have stayed in hotels by myself with my kids and the most I ever did was go to the vending machine on the same floor and right back while they were sleeping and I was nervous to do that!
I LOVE his Australian accent - MN

Yes, big Texas accent & proud of it.

haha, do you think I could pick up the accent?
or is it instilled in childhood??
haha
and i think i will be driving through there whenever i move back to Nevada!!
waht is a 'fake accent?'......nm

That is an extremely fair pay and I would expect
them to do a great job for that. I have had the same problem with them starting out good and then having to go behind them like you said. I would first start out clearly stating what you want done and that you expect a good job consistently, even 6 months down the line. That is what I've been telling everyone I've talked to is that I need a consistent job each time.
Extremely weird and maybe disturbing to some,,,,,
I used to have a dog that masturbated. No joke. Not seen anything like it since.
Not sure where to post...extremely complicated...
OK - this is going to be a shocker post, but if I went too much into detail, I would be here for a day-and-a-half - my main question is this - does anyone know why a 7-year-old little boy would be wetting his bed every single night? All I can think is abuse and have researched it and know there are other reasons possible, but given the situation, again, all I can think is abuse...
This is a REALLY messed up family:
The situation is my sister-in-law has been incarcerated for hiring someone to kill her husband. She has 7 children, 2 children out on their own, and 5 minor children that have been split up between family members. The youngest is the 7-year-old that I mentioned above. He was born out of wedlock and her husband adopted him when he was 5. Her husband is an alcoholic - a bad one.
Her husband did not die but called 911 and got help. He is out of the hospital now and has had regular visitation with my 7-year-old nephew. The husband and his family members, who he has been staying with, claim that he is not drinking and they have a "no tolerance" policy in their home, but now he wants to keep my nephew and live with him in the house where he was attacked, just the two of them.
My other sister-in-law has had this little boy since this incident happened and stated that he wets his bed every single night. Without fail. He just turned 7 this month. I have his 2 half-sisters in my home, and they told me that he has been doing this for as long as they can remember. They are 10 and 11.
I am sorry if this post is disjointed and does not make sense. The bottom line here is I am suspecting something really bad and I wanted to get some opinions. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with nocturnal enuresis in a child that age? Should I be worried?? He wants to take this boy from now on and have him live with him, and we really don't know what we can do about it! I just have a really bad feeling...Thanks.
If you came out in 1975, that had to be extremely difficult - sm
for you. I know that had to take a lot of courage and strength on your part. Good for you.
I can never put myself in someone else's shoes but I can speak as a mother and a friend. The stigma that goes with the word "gay" needs to just disappear. It's getting better but has a long way to go.
When my son came out, I explained to him that like anything else outside the "normal" is going to take some time for people to really accept. Fortunately, there are many people who already do accept the lifestyle, even if isn't one they share.
We accept it because we love the people for who they are, not how they live.
Good for you. No condemnation from me.
We had an extremely close call...twice
One night our family went for a walk our neighborhood. DD had our Maltese on a leash and DS has our Jack Russel on a leash. It was just turning to dusk and a car was coming up behind us. Our neighborhood is a housing development so there are no sidewalks. We separated DH and DD went to one side of the road and DS and I went to the other side. Well our maltese is attached to me at all times and didn't like being separated from me. She pulled so hard she broke the little metal ring on the harness and ran right in front of the car. The car wasn't going that fast but some how Casey ended up running out the back of the vehicle and straight home he was so scared. I was screaming, we raced home and there he set on our front porch with a tiny little cut on top of his head. The people in the car did stop and then came to our house to check on him.
The next scare was even worse. Took both dogs to the vet and DD was taking them to the car while I was paying the bill. She ran back inside and said Lilly (the Jack Russell) got loose. I ran out the door as Casey was running back inside (looking for me). Well went spent 20 minutes running all over the neighborhood trying to find Lilly. Finally she had run in someones garage and when they realized what was happening shut the garage door and then let us in their front door so we could get her. Thanks heavens there are real animal lovers out there.
I know someone who had a procedure because it became extremely painful -nm
:)
Come on, Ella, extremely attractive?. How and where?...nm
nm
What an extremely tacky and insensitive
x
FYI -- she had an extremely good reason
to become addicted. Her doctor said her neck/spine is so damaged not many people would be walking around (multiple plates in her neck) and also the pain meds they had her on would knock out a 300-lb. man. Between dancing injuries and the plane crash she is in, she was in constant pain for a very very long time.
I knew the site was hijacked but not by a foreign country. Which one?
The main board has a post saying that MTStars was sold.
Mine isn't a foreign body but rather attempted activity with the doc.....
I typed this report. The female doc was very calm and normal during the entire report. Male presented with penile pain and discharge. I get to the plan and she is saying she recommends he go to a urologist but he requested only "female" urologists and there was not 1 in any of the local or extended local areas, blah, blah, blah and I am kinda thinking to myself this was a little bit strange. Then she gets to the end and proceeds stating she needs me to type a separate note and title it incident note. He unclothed himself as soon as she walked in, was playing with it, and was trying to get her to play with it, etc. She gave great detailed info and I was laughing so hard throughout it it was so hard to type it. I know it wasn't funny for them but hearing the incident was hilarious for me. I was just picturing working in the office when all this was going on. Turns out he had done the nurse the same way and what I didn't get was why the doctor wasn't forewarned so she could make sure someone assisted her in the room or possibly this did happen but wasn't in her incident report.
I live in the south and know my accent is truly southern
but I find Paula to be over the top and seemingly a put on with hers. Most I have met from different spots in the US and different countries love to hear me talk.
Video lesson with a British accent. (sm)

yes he is girl. Have you ever heard his real accent
WOW lol
Philly/South Jersey accent
I have a Philly accent, though not as pronounced as some. I definitely say "wooder" for "water". But I don't have that over-long "Oh" sound that you hear around Philly. I do say certain phrases that are Philly-distinct. Like, "I'm gone downa shore," which means that I plan on going to the New Jersey seaside. And we tend to say "yiz" for the plural "you", using it the same way as southerners say y'all and New Yorkers say yooze.
Oh! And I do shout out, "Yo!" when I want to get someone's attention.
You are either a troll, liar or extremely dysfunctional....
take your pick. Oh, and if true, please get spayed!
I live in the south. Her accent sounds really put on and fake to me, BUT
I actually do think she is a neat lady. No, I do not eat the types of things she cooks. Brother, none of it is one bit healthy! Fried everything and pounds of butter in everything. Yes, it tastes great I am sure, but who can afford those calories on a regular basis?
James Gandolfini, but only doing his Tony Soprano accent..
and James Earl Jones. The only woman I can come up with is not an actor, but it would be Maya Angelou, she has the most crisp, perfect command of the English language.
I live on the East Coast where this is extremely common
for "older" women to be having babies. As long as you're healthy, I don't see it should be a problem. I was WAY too young when I had my daughter (19) and really wish I would have waited until I was in my 30s. The biggest problem I see here with women in their 40s having babies is that a lot of them are so focused on their careers that they don't spend enough time with their kids. I would think 39 would be okay, but you really are greatly increasing your risk of complications/birth defects if you wait much longer.
Of course they will listen. Mental abuse is extremely prevalent
and the abuse counselor will tell you the cycle of violence, here's an example you may recognize from him: First there is grumbling or little comments that demean you. You question yourself because he just seems to be "trying to help you," then, there is using finances, threats to take things away including children, controlling who you see, where you go, even what you think, then when you voice an opinion the violence. Starts out verbal. Will definitely lead to physical some day. He will also try the "crazy making," If you know the moon is blue for example, he will say it is green cheese, and then make you feel like you are the crazy one. You will question your reality and the truth that the moon is blue. You will become confused.
Then, a gift will appear, some form of kindness from him. You will forgive him figuring you were wrong, maybe it was you, maybe he will change, or whatever. You give in to him. Then it starts all over again, the grumbling. It is like clockwork. This is a proven fact with abusers. These people never change. A minute percentage do seek counseling, but the control they desire is too rooted in their being and their identity. They feed off of this control. Once the person they control is gone for good, they will seek someone else out.
Mental violence is a crime. Stalking is not just physical for example, phone calls, constant badgering when you say no, or say stop treating me this way, this is violence. I could go on about it, but please call the hotline and forgive me for being wordy here. Make that call and all will fall into place.
Yes!! I get extremely bored and have trouble staying focused on typing. sm
Some days I am so bored I dont know how I am going to get through the day!!
strong stuff
I use to sell the stuff and let me tell you the backing should not hurt the flooring. Actually, I took a screwdriver and tried to scrap, chip or just try to mar the surface of the flooring and I could not even scratch it at all.
