Texas 1st State to Mandate That Girls Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Texas Governor Rick Perry on Friday signed an executive order making his state the first to require that schoolgirls receive the Gardasil vaccine against cervical cancer.

"If there are diseases in our society that are going to cost us large amounts of money, it just makes good economic sense, not to mention the health and well-being of these individuals, to have those vaccines available," he told the Associated Press.

The vaccine -- which was approved for use by the federal government in June -- has proven highly protective against the most common strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV), the cause of most cases of cervical cancers.

Beginning in September of 2008, all Texan girls entering the sixth grade (at about 11-12 years old) will receive the three shots of Gardasil needed to confer immunity, the AP reported.

Issuing an executive order allowed Perry, a Republican, to circumvent potential opposition in the state legislature from conservative groups who have voiced concern that routine HPV vaccination of young girls promotes premarital sex and interferes with parents' rights.

Perry has said, however, that he sees little difference between the cervical cancer vaccine and immunization against diseases such as polio.

The Texas move has gotten the backing of Gardasil's maker, Merck, which the AP says has doubled its lobbying budget in the state. According to the news agency, Merck could realize billions in sales if vaccination with Gardasil, which costs $360 for the three-shot regimen, is made mandatory for girls across the US.

release a book "101 Medical Myths and Maladys; the ones that are true remedies and ones that are folklore. Good read. I highly suggest it.
Why is it the office staff's responsibility

to get you from your home to their office.  Obviously, you have a computer -- why not Google it?

As for the appt mix-up, it happened all the time when I worked in an office 10 years ago.  It was a mistake -- not some conspiracy.  A lot of staff is overworked due to rising job cuts.  When I have an appt further than 5 minutes from my house, I always call the day before to confirm.

Sometimes we have to take responsbility for ourselves.  As for the comments related to the age of these staff members, what about the old farts who are still working because they didn't plan well enough to retire?  Yesterday, one gave me a cheeseburger instead of the hamburger that I ordered -- what's the reason for that?  My guess was just a simple error; maybe I should rethink that.

I think they overload their schedules, and do not care enough to have their staff.....sm
time things correctly. I get this treatment all the time lately, and you are right, it is bad enough to have that hour-long wait many times for a SCHEDULED appointment, but when you already tired and stressed out, they stick in that little room, many times with a deplorable johnny on, sitting on that perch of an examining table......just for another 15 or even 20 minutes. Any caring doctors out there anymore with professional starring?
I know..that is why the inside of my post says staff is getting cookies/candy..nm

vent - Personal appearance of health care staff
My mother was recently in our local hospital for a short stay and when I was visiting, I was shocked at the unkempt appearance of some of the nurses. For example, one nurse had long, messy, straggly hair that IMO would have looked much nicer washed AND pulled back out of the way. I mean I was just shocked that they were allowed to be so unkempt looking in a hospital setting! Just venting. . . . maybe I'm just getting old, I dunno. It seems to me standards have really fallen.
the underlying read-between-the-lines message of the insurance lobbyist's message was (sm)
to, yes, appeal the denied claim.  However, she lobbies for the insurance companies.  She comes across sounding like she's on the patient's side but in reality she is on the side of the insurance company.  The insurance company gets to deny whatever claims they want right off the bat.  That leaves the SICK patient (who needs the coverage NOW when they are sick) to have to go through the appeals process.  That could take quite a while.  Imagine a cancer patient being denied some form of treatment that is going to help them.  They now have to go through the appeals process (or pay out of pocket) in order for that treatment to be covered.  In the MEANTIME their cancer is progressing.  From the point of view of the insurance company, if they drag it out long enough they don't have to pay for it at all.  That same insurance lobbyist was on 20/20 a little while back and basically came right out and said that the insurance companies COULDN'T AFFORD to pay for coverage for sick people.  She's not on the patient's side.
