Goodwill Stores & Halloween - sm

Posted By: San Francisco on 2007-10-04

Wow.... I just got back from a trip to the local Goodwill Store, and boy, am I ever ready for Halloween!  Beginning in October they bring out all their costumes, and costume-worthy, bizarre clothing.  Usually I don't get there 'til it's all picked over, but THIS TIME I went early.  Sometimes I get stuff just for the material, or the trimmings, and other times I'll see a piece and do some "reverse engineering" on it to turn it into something else.  But I don't need to do that this year - everything I found is good to go!

I LOVE Halloween... it's always been my favorite holiday!  Can't wait..!

We have the best Goodwill store in my town
Lots of rich people in my area who donate their clothes to the Goodwill store. Designer brand clothes still with tags on or worn maybe once or twice. I usually have better luck buying stuff there than I do at any retail stores. Most of the shirts, skirts, pants are $4 or $5. Bought my daughter a J. Crew hand-knit sweater there last year for $12, originally was close to $100. Don't think it had ever been worn. My daughter is a shoe-aholic and buys her shoes at thrift stores. That skeeves me out a little though.
Salvation Army, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity
All have trucks that will pick up household items, at least in our area. They should be listed in the phone book. You can call them and see when they will be in your area.

My college-age kids love finding stuff at the Goodwill Thrift Store. Go figure! They like their

I am not one for Halloween, never was really into it but...

My son is going as a CIA agent and my daughter is going as a princess (their choice).

Halloween

With October fast approaching I thought I would ask about Halloween costume ideas.  What have your kids been in the past?  Do you make their costumes or buy them?

We try to make ours but sometimes the characters are easier to buy.  Off hand I can think of my favorites...a magician, an alien, a ghost, macaroni and cheese, pop tart.

what are your kids being for halloween?
My kids are too old to go trick-or-treating now, but I'd love to know what your child/children are dressing up as this year.  I always loved the creative home-made costumes even though I always seemd to go out and buy them!
Halloween Costumes
My three year old is going as a Unicorn and my 12 year old isn't trick or treating this year, but she's going to take her sister around and share her candy.
where is the halloween spirit???
The person that I rent my house from made me take down my Halloween decorations... to me that's sad!!! all they were was just a pumpkin door cover, funky caution tape on the porch posts, and 3 tiny inflatable pumpkins on string.  She said the caution tape made people think it was a crime scene, which is resonable if people were that gullible..... baahalloweenbug! To me it is just a holiday that makes kids happy and that is good enough for me.... HAPPY HALLOWEEN MTs!!!
Talking about Halloween, get this
I was listening to a report yesterday about a school that cannot have Halloween theme nor OMG any Christmas theme and now unable to serve anything pork or pork related on the school menu because it might offend others. This is our country but I thought to myself it is becoming others, not ours anymore. This might sound strange but honest to God I thought this, oh well I am up in age and will not be around for years and years to come so I will not have to hear this for as long as I have been on this earth now. If Americans do not stand up, we are slowly losing our country little by little to others. I do not mind immigration but when I see our beliefs, our holidays, our American way falling by the wayside, it makes me sad. We are being put on the backburner because others might be offended? What gives?
Happy Halloween
I am dressed up as a skeleton, but sadly alot of pitbulls out there are skin & bones w/o dressing up abused by their owners, neglected. We pray for all of the pitbull breed. We also pray that people will come to love & understand this wonderful breed of dogs. For those who hate us out of their own ignorance and lack of understanding, we pray for you.
Happy Halloween
Here is our baby girl (CJs mom)... since the costume had wings she tried it out to see if she could fly LOL
Sister's halloween costume
My twin sister lives 2000 miles away, so it sure is fun to get pictures. This is her Halloween costume this year, which cracked me up.

We may be twins, but apparently we are not identical, because this costume would look a little different on me. So in my reply I said:

In that picture you(r hair) look(s) just like me (mine)!

check your childrens halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM EAT THE

Wear Halloween masks? sm
Just kiddin'!

Although my boys are older now and seem to "forget" to bring home school fundraising materials, I do remember those days. There were school fund raisers, band fundraisers and Boy Scout Popcorn to sell. I felt like I needed to wear a Halloween mask sometimes, but what I did was to carefully choose which fundraisers my boys would participate in. We knew that Boy Scout popcorn is sold in October/November, so we would not participate in school/band/other fundraisers during that time. Maybe in the spring of the year we would participate. You might just try giving a donation in place of actually selling if your budget permits. For example, if a child is expected to sell $100 dollars in cookie dough of which the school (or whatever) would retain 1/3, then just donate $33 to the school (or whatever).
I am a Baptist and love to decorate for Halloween.
My husband and his family on the other hand don't like Halloween nor the decorations, since he feels that way, he doesn't help me and my daughter decorate. Whatever. We love decorating so we do it anyway. If they don't like it then don't look. It is just a day to have fun and decorate. Some people need to relax a little and let loose.
This just brings it back to the Halloween talk-
We are NOW allowed as adults to wear masks as in covering our face for Halloween- at least in my section of the country. We might be thieves but others can! Love your post, by the way.

In the spirit of Halloween - favorite scary movie?
I'm too chicken to watch scary movies most of the time!  I though Sixth Sense was good, but I guessed the ending half way through.  Stir of Echoes scared me pretty good.  I thought The Ring was horrible until the very end when I just about peed my pants!  How about you all?
We're having a big fall/Halloween party on Sunday. sm

I need some great ideas to ask guests to bring - Husband and I are providing the main meal but I'm asking some friends and relatives to bring "side" items.  The main dish will be chili dogs. I asked friend to bring a few bags of chips.  Anything else interesting a few people can bring to accompany? Not everyone is bringing something. We do this every year, have hay rides, and it lasts all day. We play games and give out prizes. It's a blast.  A lot of people from our church will be coming.  I'm really not the only one hosting it, but the other hosts need to know what to bring...I can't think of anything interesting besides drinks and chips!

I'm making my famous marshmallow witches again this year and another gal is bringing baby cany apples by scooping out a portion of an apple with a melon thingie and dipping those in caramel. I've never heard of them before but she said they were so cute!  What do you creative women think??I need to let my other hostesses know today some time.  thanks!!

Any funny/great ideas for couples Halloween costumes?
My 24-year-old DS and his SO have to dress up for a Halloween party.  His older brother and his wife are going as Dog and Beth, and 24YO DS is trying to come up with something even better than that.  Any ideas out there?
We have several stores here where they

have all the ingredients cooked/cut up and you just assemble them yourself or you can have them do it for you for a fee.

I think they are too pricey to do on a regular basis, but evidently they are popular as I know of at least 3 stores.

I have read about a chef coming into people's homes and basically doing the same thing.  They usually prepare a meal to be eaten fresh that night and then freeze the rest.   I'm sure there is a market for it, the young singles starting out in the corporate world with long hours, the wealthy who would otherwise probably eat out every night, etc.  I think it would take a while to build up a customer base so that you could actually make a profit, but maybe you could work for a caterer too to help out with the busy times of year.  Maybe you could get tied in with a caterer and offer such things through the client base the cateter already has.

At certain stores in MI, s/m

They will double coupons up to $1.  I do this a lot with toothpaste and stockpile it.  A lot of times it is 2/$4 or 2/$5, so I either get it free or for 50 cents a tube.  A lot of the $1 coupons are for new items and our local store here is pretty good about having those on sale a lot during the first few weeks it is out to promote it, so I get the new things relatively cheap as well.  You just have to be careful about not getting things "just because you have a coupon."

When I coupon shop, it can take me 3 hours because I compare all the prices with brands to coupons, etc.  You also have to really know your prices as compared to other stores.  I have one store where I get my meat and I don't like to buy much else there because everything else is expensive.  Where they double the $1 coupon, I don't buy anything there that I don't have a coupon and on sale for as their other prices are jacked.  I'm really careful about it and belong to an internet sites to help me as well.

I think they use... you can buy it in stores and onlinhe.

Where in the Bible does it say what stores--sm
can and cannot sell?? Point out that *scripture* to me..please! The Bible also says *love one another as you love yourself*.
Stores closing..
The stores did not close for Chanukah...my son had to work 6 out of the 8 nights of Chanukah. I would have loved to have him at own each evening for prayers, but he was there after and we still got to enjoy the Holy Days together. Compromise people, compromise! Life is too short for such frustrations.
and some of us have stores readily available ...n/m

Smoking outside stores
I don't like people smoking outside stores either. They stand right by the door so you have to hold your breath and go through the smoke cloud. Unlike the other things mentioned, that does invade my personal space with secondhand smoke exposure.
Problems with pet stores.......sm
My niece bought a St. Charles Cavalier spaniel from a pet store in Houston, TX when she was visiting her in-laws and flew it back home with her. It had a little drippy nose at the time and the pet store reassured them she had just a little cold and said she had been vet checked. Well, by the time she got it home 2 days later, that baby was nearly dead......long story short, they spent a fortune keeping that baby alive....she had one problem after the next. They don't have children yet and she loves this dog like a child, and 4 years later, she is a healthy dog but now and then, has joint problems, had fluid build up in her eyes, and other stuff. She hates it when someone says you should have took her back. She loves the little dog, and I just tell her if you hadn't gotten her, she probably wouldn't be alive, God wanted you to have her because she needed love.

Then she went out and bought a Springer Spaniel, thinking her little girl needed a pal around while she was at work, and he has been a pill and a half ever since. Stubborn streak a mile long!!!!
It is 4 stores around Atlanta, don’t think
national. Let me settle up there first and then I will update. Let me say this, and this gives me hope, the court person the other day said a big chain owed $10,000 and when the truck pulled up in front of their store to load, the checkbook came out so I would like the money back - if not I take more furniture than I bought in the first place. I bought dinette but if I have to remove plan on 4 complete dinettes with 2 sofs and 2 chairs. Already have my wish list just in case!
You can get it from Amazon if not in stores (nm)

I don't blame the stores at all
Its a vicious circle for everyone, and everyone is loosing money. The stores because people won't buy what they used to and the consumer because they have to pay so much more for what they do get!!!
Why do stores, like Wal-Mart,

always redesign their layout just when I finally learn where things are?

Why are the seats of the carts at Wal-Mart so little?  My 3-year-old barely fits in.

Why is it when I go to buy something on sale or "as advertised", the store never has it in stock?

stores that are going out of business
I got my teenage son all new bedding. Down comforter, designer sheets, etc. There are some good sales at these stores shutting down.
And yes, he wanted an Ipod, but he sleeps all the time anyway, so have a nice bed I think!
most stores have this, even walmart

At clothing stores
Most stores don't carry very large sizes, so you end up wearing what you have got, or having to special order.
Not to digress, but I thought stores never

And, I'm not talking about WHO the stores sell to, I'm

And, no I don't buy from businesses that knowingly sell homosexual material of any type!

You are so right. I never saw such junk as I looked at in these stores. Well I will be a lot more
careful what I buy and who made it.  This was all made overseas.  Just junk and not cheap.
well just this year they opened 15 stores in...nm

And that is why I don't shop at those store, but there are many stores that I do
items.  I'm not holding any anger from this end, I am just going to continue to stick to my convictions.
consignment stores and outlets
I've been shopping those for years....I get sticker shock at the malls...prices are outrageous.  In recent memory the most I've paid for a designer suit that included skirt, pants and jacket....houndstooth print in a petite size (which are hard to find) with the original tags still on it from a major dept store was $25.  I did break down and spend $7 on a cashmere turtleneck though.    It's real fun to get a bargain and still have money left over to go grocery shopping.
Try Target......and call stores every day - sm
we went through this in August. Heard 2 things, they will only be selling them in bundles from now on (which we did not want)....and starting to sell them in China now, so not a lot coming to U.S, most are going to China right now so it is very hard to find them. We had bought a used one at Game Stop, but found a problem with it on the last day of the warranty (7-day warranty return policy on used stuff); took it back that night and still had to fight for a refund, and started hunting again. Told to call Wal-mart every day and run in there when they said they got them in (ours was getting 30 a week back in August with 1 weekly shipment but they would sell out in 2 hours). I found them at Target a day or two after we'd bought the used one.....of course they were gone when I went back a 5 days later. But my DH went into a Target in the town he was working and lucked out and bought one there. So if you have a Target, try your luck there, and keep calling until they get a shipment in and drop everything and go when you do find one. I am thinking about seeing if I can luck into any and resell on ebay, make some Christmas money! You can find them on ebay but I am sure as Christmas draws closer the price will rise dramatically. Good luck.
yep, automotive stores and I think Wal-Mart
any store that has an automotive department, could be K-Mart, Auto-Zone, anywhere mechanics get their stuff from.......maybe even the grocery store in the automotive aisle...where you can pick up oil.....
Have had mine 5 years and it stores just
great...Love it and will never deal with untangling lights again!
Pet stores usually have contracts to buy lg.#s of pups

2 things in grocery stores
1. When your looking for a specific item and looking at all the choices and someone walks right in front of you and stops and does the same thing. Then they don't even have the decency to say excuse me or even look at you.

2. When your at the check out stand and writing a check on the little counter and the person behind you comes and stands so close to your back that you can feel them breathing down your neck or they are so close they can read your check.
I am asking in all honesty to not blame the stores
My family is in the grocery business, and like jss said, everything is going up. I don't believe the stores are trying to make a profit off of the bad economy, but groceries have to be trucked in (paying the drivers, the gas, the workers that package the items, etc.). Outrageous prices are eveywhere. My father refused to order red peppers due to the cost and the fact that he knew his customers would not pay for them. It works both ways.
Stores are trying to make 'em get their

Bring ads from other stores. Most pricematch..sm.

So you don't have to worry about trying to get to the other stores before the sale item is gone, bring the ads from the other stores with you. Most store will match the price of other stores if you bring in the ad!! Thus eliminating running all over town in a mad rush.  All you have to do is get to the "sale item" at that store first before it's gone, then you can relax while getting the stuff from the other ads because there'll be plenty of stock cuz it's not on sale there.  It makes it sooo much easier and a lot less stressful.  I hope I worded that so it makes sense. I'm tired.

Or, get together the day before with a few other people who are going. Each of you is designated a different store and picks up what the others want at their designated store.  Then meet for breakfast afterwards to exchange the purchases as well as horror/humor stories from the "adventures." Thus, again, eliminating the "rushing" from one place to another.

I think I'll stay in and shop online this year.  I heard you can do that for the black friday sales and some store will even let you buy online and pick up at the store. (later, after the rush and madness is over!)

For the "virgin" poster, beware, some people can be downright mean, nasty, rude and even violent that morning.  Seriously.  Oh, and NEVER leave your cart unattended if you were lucky enough to get one of the "limted amounts per store" items.  People will literally take them right out of your cart if you're not watching. Keep your stuff buried beneath your coat at the bottom of the cart and NEVER let your cart leave your side.  And keep your purse in sight at all times.  If you bring a purse, have it hang in front of you and not on your side.  I like to just keep my money and/or credit card tucked snugly in my front pocket of my jeans and not even bother with a purse.
