Fluoride

use extra fluoride! in some states you can find a fluoride paste at the small, independently owned pharmacies. i can find it in the state where i am originally from but not where i live now. my ortho had mentioned it and all while using that i never had a cavity. this from a kid who had numerous cavities, not from lack of brushing or care. if you can't find that, ACT mouthwash has added fluoride too. you just want to make sure it is the last thing you use before bed so that it has a chance to sit on your teeth/in your mouth and be absorbed. my son uses the ACT and hasn't had a cavity since braces and starting this daily use.

there is also special threading floss available for braces. my son's ortho didn't tell us about it but i knew from my past. its thin on one and and fluffy through the middle. when you pull it the fluffy part becomes tight like regular floss. its much easier to fee through the wires and the fluffy part can double as a small toothbrush in the tight areas around the brackets and such.
