Do boys go through hormonal changes as they grow up? sm

Posted By: luvmyboys on 2008-07-07

I have two boys, one is 6 and the other will be 10 in a few weeks.  my almost 10 y/o has been such a good kid through his life.  BUT i notice sometimes when he stays with my inlaws, especially my 11 y/o nephew, he comes back home with an attitude.  my two boys usually get a long really well.  but my 10 y/o spent three nights with my inlaws (two included my nephew) and he has been so cranky with me and his little brother.  i didn't know of boys have hormonal changes like girls do.

Hormonal H@ll!
My hormones are giving me a rough time too, although I've had a lot of extra stressors in the last couple years also, so I'm not sure what is what.

I have been having restless leg syndrome on and off, except it is my whole body (not just legs) and I often have that feeling during the day too. It drives me totally nuts when I am working. I can hardly stay in my chair! I think the fact that our job forces us to work as fast as we can (for the whole shift) doesn't help.

What an oxymoron anyway ... work as fast as you can while remaining seated.

Anyone else with RLS? Any good suggestions for relief?
Hormonal effects?
You know, I am way past menopause and I (along with 2 of my aunts in their 80s) have never had any symptoms. One aunt had surgical menopause at 20 something, nothing. I know this is not the same with each women but I never went thru menopause and know the ovaries just withered and died. Last year (age 63) my doctor even was amazed at the moistness on the exam. I have no explanation for that except I just don't feel my age at all, except for those aches and pains that have come with some age.
does anyone have hormonal (pms) problems so bad that .... sm
you take medication for it (or even OTC vitamins)?  i think i have hormonal problems.  i'm 35 and definitely before i get ready to start, i'm very aggitated and can cry at the drop of a hat.  sometimes i feel the need to cry and really don't know why.  the only thing i can think is hormones.  i have an 8 y/o and a 5 y/o, so no young babies.  i really hate taking medication, (been on something and i can't remember the name of it starts with a "p").  any, my life is pretty good, so i think it's hormones and tired of it.  it all started after having my kids.  thanks for any info
tried hormonal creams?
myself, i'm meno or post menopausal; but now that i've tried these creams for my hot flashes, i see that they can also be used for PMS symptoms. i got my online at either drugstore.com or vitaminshoppe.com. What seems to be working best for me is the Progest (Emerita) or Progestacare (Lifeflo).
yes, I think mine are hormonal too
I am really awaiting menopause with bated breath. Apparently my mother had migraines too which disappeared after menopause but her migraines lasted just a few hours about once in two years, probably because she never faced a computer screen in her life! Mine started after the use of birth control pills about 14 years back which was apparently the trigger for this and the prescribing doc never asked me if I had a family history of migraines and my mother never told me she had them since they were so rare. So I get them every month without fail and now I have a sort of fear psychosis and probably get them due to that. Sometimes I manage to put it off for a week or two with regular use of painkillers but am not sure if the painkillers will cause more side effects in the end! Thanks for all the detailed advice. I have noticed those things your doc told you about and already know to avoid them, those fast moving objects and flashing lights. I cant take three days off work each time esp since I work from home, so I have to bear it and keep typing, like today. Thanks again.
Hormonal problems can occur...
if the blood supply to the ovaries is damaged during the procedure. This can supposedly lead to an estrogen/progesterone imbalance. There is a condition called post tubal ligation syndrome, although its exact cause is still debated. There are many who complain of worsening cramps or bleeding after having a TL.
I wouldn't call it hormonal
I would just call it typical.  I would often see small changes in my children's attitudes when they had been around other children.  Not to say all other children are bad, I have one niece that was a wonderful influence on my kids.
I am also guessing that it is a hormonal thing..nm

hormonal imbalances and sleep loss - can you help? sm
Hi, ladies.  Five weeks ago I began experiencing severe middle insomnia for the first time in my life.  I will sleep for 3 hours, be awake for 3 hours, and then maybe sleep for another hour before it is time to get up.  I also cannot nap no matter how tired I am because I tried that several times.  Ambien CR no longer keeps me alseep, nor does Lunesta, and I am not big on having to take a sleep aid every single night for sleep.  I have tried melatonin, which also has not kept me asleep.  I have been told I have hormonal imbalances (am nearly 44), am on no HRT, and wonder what anyone might suggest for sleep until I can get myself squared away on some hormonal therapy.  My poor husband...He has been a saint through all of this, but I am not sure how much longer I can work, keep up with the house, etc., with missing so many hours of sleep each night.    Pretty desperate here.
grow up

Yes, did grow up in NYC but
from the way she spoke, you would have thought she was born and raised here.
Oh, grow UP, Jan! sm

They grow up ................sm
when we are not looking, whether we like it or not. While I don't think 10-yo boys should be coddled to the point of being sissies, I do still believe they are still children and need to be guided in an age-appropriate way. The ripe old age of 10 is a difficult time for most kids. They realize they have added a digit to their age and they are entering an emotionally scary and hormonally charged time in their lives when everything they knew is changing....their bodies, their relationships, their whole world. Our jobs as parents are to guide them, not drag them kicking and screaming, along the path that will eventually lead to adulthood. If we do our jobs properly, then we will have young men and women of honor who will someday do the same for their children, but if we screw it up, heaven help the next generation.
I think you both need to grow up! sm
With all the horrible things going on in the world, this kind of stuff sounds absolutely petty to me for two grown adults to end a relationship over. You both sound like spoiled brats to me.
Let them grow up
even if they rant and rave. What would they do if you were dead? That's what I used to tell my 3 grown children and my daughter has worked 2 jobs to raise her son single-handed. Our children would NEVER move back in with us for any reason. You have to cut the strings. Sometimes it hurts but everyone is better off in the long run.
Maybe if you wanted it to grow sm
I'll fight Hayseed over it any day. LOL.
I never ever wanna grow up
ll
Did you grow up in 1 town or move...sm

and if you moved, how often and are you glad you moved?  As for me, we moved every other year due to my father's occupation.  There were 2 places I was very glad that we moved from and 2 places I would have loved to have stayed, the others were OK.   When people ask me where I was raised I tell them "everywhere" because that best summarizes it.

What about you?    Do you have a home town?

:) I feel that way, too. Cranberries don't grow down here!
To me, true dressing has only cornbread in it, too. No white bread. :)
so then the kids you had didn't grow up
in you care...they went back to who? Family? Wow, the odds of every single child you cared for going back to their parents/family is well, just remarkable or what a coincidence for the sake of these posts. NONE of them were split up? You never claimed to be an angel, but you must be one heck of a FC parent to have lucked out like that considering the politics and social issues involved. I never said having siblings in short-term FC is unacceptable, just harder to come by anymore than it used to be...and the states now have federal laws to follow that were not in place 10 years ago.

I will restate that sending siblings to a GROUP HOME (read: Not a FC setting) is less desirable than several relatives maintaining close contact in short-term situations.

Yea, Budda likes it when I write about something I'm passionate about.
I know, but backbones don't grow overnight.
I also realize that I 'lived' before my kids came into this word.

And I know I made bad decisions that turned me into a single mom.

I'm not saying I hate my life. I'm just tired. I probably wouldn't know how to live at this point anyhow.

You are 100% right and I'm not making excuses, but it didn't get like this overnight and it won't change overnight.
I say, 'Let it grow!' And under no circumstances -
should you (or anyone else) grow old 'gracefully'. Fight it every inch of the way. If the 'cats' are making remarks about your hair, it's probably because they're jealous.

I'm 58, and like yours, mine is still mostly light brown, and I occasionally highlight it, too, but only when I feel like it. I had it cut shoulder-length a few years ago and hated it -- they ironed it straight and turned in under, and made me look like every soccer mom in my neighborhood, which I am totally NOT. Some people make good short-hair people, and some people don't. And I'm one of 'em.

I have a friend a little younger than me, and her hair is waist-length, VERY thick and beautiful, and salt-and-pepper, with a lot more salt than pepper. I've gone back to growing mine out, and now have a long ponytail. It should hit waist-length in the next year or so, and that's right where I want it. I'll probably still have a long ponytail when I'm 80, too. And if I don't like the gray hairs, then maybe I'll dye them purple.

So let the catty neighbors all walk around looking like dowdy old clones, and in the meantime you'll be happy being your normal, beautiful-haired self.
I know I will miss them terribly when they grow up - but sm
somehow I don't think that's the part I'll miss ;-)

I think I'll miss them needing me to help with things, miss tucking them in at night, watching them learn. I don't think I'll miss having to fuss at them - but you never know...lol
She won't grow to fit her tank, she will just keep growing....
But eventually she has to stop growing some time. I really think she has probably grown as much as she is going to. If she has to go to a bigger tank yet, we may have to see if our local zoo will take her. The tanks are the biggest outlay. I get all her rocks free from our local monument maker and a quarry. I buy a bottle of the stuff to kill the chlorine and use our city water.

Cleaning her tank is not too bad as we have a gravel vacuum. We don't fill the tank all the way up, only about 2/3 full. They need at least the width of their shell for the depth of the water in case they flip over on their back. Otherwise they can't flip themselves over. We do a partial tank change. Just enough to suck up the "poop" and food scraps. Then we replace it.

Other than her lights burning out once in a while, she is pretty low mainatenance. And fun to watch. Especially when she chases the goldfish. LOL
Tomatoes are not hard to grow........sm
You can start the plants inside and plant them in large containers on the patio or porch if that is the only space you have. Nothing much better than a big, fresh, juicy ripe garden tomato!!
It would grow old real fast for me - sm
so I can understand you being annoyed, and no it is not heartless. Is he short on cash? Can he afford to feed himself? Obviously is money is an issue then it is a different story. Were you very close before the divorce or is this new behavior? I presume the GF does not want him there for dinner presuming it is a loneliness issue for him. But as you said he is probably keeping an eye on your mom since he asks about her every day, I would presume the divorce was her idea? Or is he having buyers remorse? I would set some ground rules for dad and tell him as much as you enjoy seeing him, etc, that you need some nights to yourself, and to limit it to maybe 3 days a week, MWF or something like that. So he still gets to see you (and stalk your mom) but not monopolize every evening. Or else starting making things you know your dad dislikes!
WHAT? Children who kill animals grow up
to kill people, they are sociopoaths and have no conscious. I would lock them away for life.
Didn't she grow up in New York City?
What does she know about the South?
Oh my. You sound so young. You'll grow up one day. nm

Do they ever grow out of this?? My once precious and sweet 3 year old son has sm

turned into a holy terror.  Wow.  For the past 2 weeks he has been completely nonsensical and out of control. Any little thing throws him off and he begins destroying the house, kicking, yelling, screaming, etc. This morning I woke up to him crying on the couch without any clothes on, so I told him to go put something on (it's freezing in here!), to which he told me NO! Of course he received a spanking for that (what a way to wake up, huh?).  Well, he's been pitching a fit for almost 2 hours now since I refused to cook him pancakes. I told him if he would behave I would make them.  Well, he doesn't want to do anything but scream and throw fits, so I won't make them.  He has said the word pancake at least 200 times since early this morning. I cannot reward bad behavior, so now I'm just ignoring him which is what my pediatrician told me to do the other day.  If I deal with him, I may regret it later.  Yes, can you tell I am completely frustruated?

I know they say different things work for different children, but NOTHING works with him. I never, ever spanked before.  But the chair became a joke as he would just jump right back down out of his chair and run out the room screaming. He refused to sit down.  So then I had to begin spanking him and of course that just makes him angrier, meaner, and he won't listen to a word I say.  As soon as I begin talking to him and explaining what I am doing he screams to "override" my voice.

I cried all day Sat. because my husband took my older soon to a ball game and my 3 year old was really bad that morning. I just wanted a little peace, but he refused.  So we battled all morning until lunch.  It has been every single day like this. Yesterday was bad, but not too bad. Today is really bad, but not as bad as Saturday.  I wonder what is going on?  He is so unreasonable.  The thing is, my husband says, "he's 3. How can you not handle a 3 year old?"  Like just now, as I'm typing this, he just said to me, "mommy's STUPID!!" I haven't heard that one all morning, so let me go take care of it. Please say a prayer for me...and him too.

Sounds like a great way to grow a nice new head
of hair.  I'm sure she'll come up with something to give her a fresh start.  She could always wear a wig.  I'm sure the hair extensions did some damage to her lovely locks.
I decided to grow tomatoes for my 10 year old who loves them! sm
I planted 2 plants and they grew up so tall - totally pesticide free with no bugs on them all year! We had so many that I would give them to a neighbor. One batch was picked up by a woman who drove 30 miles for our tomatoes! I don't like them.....They were no big deal planting - just put them in the ground and watered every day.
LOL! I was told it made your hair shiny and grow faster!
nm
You can grow tomato plants upside down from hanging pots, too.

oh boys
will be boys!
boys
My son is 15 and I cannot tell you how many interviews and interrogations we have had to go through. Every time he has been on a date the parents want to meet us and see our house, etc. I has been a flipping nightmare, especially since these little flings last about a week and are over after the dance! In my humble opinion, find her something else to do. That is what I have had to do with my son. I just can't take the pain anymore. Join some super busy, mega overly scheduled adult supervised something! Shoo, shoo, mama is working!
I don't think so. I have 2 boys. They have

proven that circumcision can be beneficial for several reasons, not to mention it is more hygienic.  I was conflicted with my first son because my OB/GYN was against it.  She was African-American and I don't know if it was a cultural thing or what.  She did do my son, but she didn't take enough off, it wasn't her decision to make.  My second son I didn't hesitate.

My mom said that at 8 days she took my brothers to be circumcised - based on the Bible.

I can't see how it would be called abuse.  I think it is personal choice.  I can't tell you how many reports I've done on men over 50 who have had problems and have had to be circumcised.

Two boys
I have 2 boys; 24 and 19.  The older one moved away to college, the school dropped his program after 2 years, so he floundered and moved back home.  After 6 months told him get a job, pay his bills, go to school or get out.  He went to work FT and paid all his own bills, moved out for a few months with some guys (who did not pay their share of the rent) and then moved back home, went back to college, has made the honor roll for the last year while working, just started in 2009 charging him room and board as he is after all 24.  Other son 19, almost lost him to bad decisions and bad friends at 14-15 but is on the right track now; in college and working PT, pays his bills.  He goes to the community college, looking into a 2+2 program, told him to go away for the last 2 years as he will get the experience of being on his own without being totally on his own.  He has a serious girlfriend. I am more worried about those 2 getting an apartment together first and then him not finishing school.  Older son is working on buying a house within 18 months and younger son will live with him (if not with girlfriend first.)  I have to say I'm looking forward to an empty nest.
While I don't have boys but -sm
two young girls, 9 and 10, for years I would cover for my DH, get the card, mail it to his mom, make him call her on Mother's Day (remind him 50x)....For years when my kids were babies I would get nothing from him, because as he would say, I was not his mother. Well what about those two squirmy kids of ours, I am their mother. I told him he needed to help them and get a card from them to give to me, or help them make me a card, whatever that did not matter. (I have always made sure he got something from the kids on Father's day). The kids have been able to be the ones to remind him now for the last few years about special days, Mother's Day and my birthday which is great. I don't want much, just a card and Happy B or Mom day, just acknowledgement basically. He had some sort of epiphany a year or two ago and now sends his mom flowers every Mom Day and at Christmas, think this was the 3rd one in a row(guilt and belief they are dying coming to bear now, MIL is 74 but doing quite well), still did not send her a card though, figured the card with the flowers was enough. I made him go out an buy the card (instead of me coving his butt as usual). We all signed it and he mailed it. I never missed with my mom and did something every year until she died. She kept ever one of my cards too, found them after she died. ---I would still send your son a card on his birthday but leave the money out, betcha that will grab his attention. ----My DH doesn't remember anyone's birthday, he forgot mine a few times which stunk. I take care of getting the cards, mailing them, etc., though refuse to do Mom day anymore, I still have to nag at him to call his mom, dad on their birthdays, etc. Some guys are just lazy and don't want to be bothered with it.
Two boys.
I have 2 boys and enjoy them immensely. The oldest drives me nuts with some of the decisions he makes. He is funny, easy going, lots of friends and just doesn't take life too seriously.

My youngest is 17. He is very smart, has big plans for college and career (he says, you don't have to understand what it is mom, you just have to pay for it). My regret is that I wish I'd had more kids. I would take a whole house full of boys. So much fun!!
I raised 2 boys on my own.
Maybe some of these techniques that assisted me can do the same for you:

1) Literally write down a list of rules that you want observed in your home. Not what you think you can get him to do but what you actually WANT. Make copies for his bedroom, for the refrigerator, for his billfold, for every room you can. (I printed mine off and framed them in certificate frames and hung them up. Be specific. Cover all areas.)

2) Literally write down behaviors and language you are not going to tolerate and rank them.

2) Literally write down a list of everything that is important to this youngster. Include friends (by name), electronics (iPod, computer, etc.), privileges (telephone, friends coming over, going out, driving), and places he enjoys going (movies, sports events, eating establishments, etc.). Rank these in order of importance to him.

3) If possible, have your husband (separated, correct?) to meet with you first and agree and provide a united front. Agree on what you expect of him as his parents, what is best for his wellbeing. Write down how you will construct discipline and dispense punishment. Make it appropriate, reasonable and, above all, something you will actually do.

5) Have a meeting with your son (and your husband, if he is onboard with you). Give your son a copy of the new rules, the discipline tactics, the unacceptable behaviors and the punishments. Go over each one of them. Don't argue. Don't explain too much. The lists are clear. Everything has a yes/no as to its use and everything has an if with it as well.

Here's the hardest part: Do what you say. If his language is offensive, he can't talk on the phone. Period. No exceptions, period. Even if you have to unplug it and keep the cord in your pocket. Never argue; never raise your voice. Just calmly make your statement and leave it alone. The more he carries on, the more trouble he will incur. Let him handle the stress of it. If you protect him from the consequences of his actions, he will never, ever change and never learn. (Warning: His behavior WILL get worse before it gets better and then it will wax/wane on occasion just to test the waters.)

Stay with him after school in his tutoring. I showed at school one day in high school for my oldest. One day for 2 classes and that was all it ever took. Made the difference with my youngest, too! Neither one wanted me showing up and sitting next to him in class! Be there but let the teacher do the tutoring. Just be there to enforce his attendance and understand what is happening in the sessions.

Praise good/changed behavior but do not reward it. If it is behavior you are wanting to be an expected behavior, praise it, acknowledge it. Reward exceptional behavior that goes beyond what you have set rules for.

Make sure he is involved in his own caretaking: Laundry, specific chores (no pay -- no ma'am, do not pay any child to contribute to their household), help cook one night a week, yard work, etc.

Be watchful of his music, TV watching, movie going. These can have just as devastating of an impact on him as his so-called friends. Make sure you know who his friends' parents are, what they do; do you agree with how they live? How these friends act? If not, restrict his activities with them.

Get him involved in some type of sport he enjoys and into a youth group if at all possible. It is important.

I hope these tips will help you as much as they did me.
my boys are warriors
Both have been deployed at one time or another to Iraq. One is there now. The other boy told me that he had gone to the funeral of one of his brave friends who had been killed. Those horrible people were there from Kansas, but the Harley people were there also, 200 to 300 of them, each holding a flag, protecting the family of the soldier from the disgusting behavior of that supposed church. Made chills go up and down my spine. Can you imagine that many flags in one place being used to protect a family! GO HARLEY WARRIORS!
boys or girl
I have 2 of each (yes 4 in all) and I would defitenly say boys right now. My kids are still young so may be my mind will change with age!
huh? boys much easier? NOT...NM

Boys do go through stages.
On the other hand, depression can come out as anger.

I think mothers are supposed to help their kids understand their feelings and talk to them, but it can be difficult to get boys to express themselves.

It's think it's a normal stage to go through for boys to just be annoyed by girls because girls are so talkative and different, sometimes dating-obsessed or gossip-obsessed or whatever, and for a boy it's annoying.

Maybe he doesn't enjoy competing with a girl who is older.

I think he would rather spend time with boys right now, but boys need something to do together so they stay out of trouble.

But he needs to realize that he doesn't really hate girls. He just doesn't enjoy the different developmental stages they go through. And your daughter might benefit from knowing how males' brains work - that guys don't admire girls who are obsessed about stuff they think is silly.

Just some thoughts. Parenting is hard, but respect for siblings should be taught, and some space from each other can go a long way.
That's for sure and something I hear over and over. Boys
