products over hair color, I know that much.
If the color is not ash, then I think you are safe to color over it with a dark brown that is as close to your natural color as possible. Then use the special shampoos to preserve the color, and the conditioners. You will still see the highlights, but they will be toned down and much better looking in my experience. Then hopefully as your hair grows in there won't be much of a change, except for the gray coming in, of course.

Henna
In a past profession (sigh) I was a hairdresser and have used henna on clients. It does not penetrate the hair shaft, it coats it. Remember the sitcom I Love Lucy? Well, there you go. That is henna. There are shades of henna, including "clear" which puts a "shine" on hair with no color deposited, just the henna "effects." I would never put it on my hair because it is difficult to remove, does not mix well with anything put on over it (like another type of hair coloring product) and is not good to perm over either as the hair gets a funky texture and the color is adulterated. Just because something is "natural and organic" does not mean it is nice and free of problems. I did not like using it and tried to talk clients out of the henna experience, if possible. My advice is to stick to the more familiar and easy to work with tints and products (Clairol, Matrix, Redken, etc.) and if you can afford it have it professionally done. You won't be sorry and won't need expensive restoration work done (which can start at $300.00 and goes up from there). Another thing to stay away from are products that have metallic salts as a base because they are much the same as henna and don't mix well with other stuff and make the hair feel "gummy" and are usually off in color tone. Just my 2 cents.
I love henna!
I discovered henna a year ago and have been using it ever since. I became really concerned when researching the ingredients in hair dyes. After reading it is linked to the sudden increase in Hodgkin's lymphoma cases in women, I decided to seek out more natural haircare products. At the time, I had thinning, very damaged hair from bleach and what I thought was hereditary hair loss. My temples were almost nonexistent. My hair has now tripled, maybe more, in thickness. My hair is full and significantly longer (from shoulder length to now almost to my bra strap). The conditioning benefits are tremendous. The key is to only use 100% Body Art quality henna. Everything you see labeled "henna" may not be 100% herb. Henna is all-nature and is fantastic for the hair. I got rid of my stylist and got a whole new head of luxurious hair! Check out this website for all the information you could ever want to know about henna: www.hennaforhair.com I hope you have as much success with henna as I have had!!!!
