Choleserol lowering agents can be tricky...

In Reply to: Your experiences with simvastatin? - see mssg.
Sometimes (not always) they have to play around with dosages to mitigate side effects. The first one I was given made me feel really tired (like I was coming down with the flu). They switched me to a once-daily dosage of simvastatin. I take it right before I go to bed and have absolutely zero side effects.
Just keep yourself informed about the drug they try you on and be aware when you first start on it and you'll be fine. In my personal opinion, not taking one is not an option, even with lifestyle changes. Be sure to go for your cholesterol checks as suggested by you MD. Of course, if applicable, you can lose weight, stop smoking, increase activity, increase your intake of the good cholesterols and play around with low-fat recipes. There are some heart-smart products you can substitute for things you consume a lot of, like margarine, that are tasty, yet a bit more expensive.

Anyone have ideas for natural lipid-lowering agents? sm
I try so hard, oatmeal, almonds, whole grain bread, watch what I eat and drink, substitute honey for sugar, yet triglycerides and cholesterol high. Getting discouraged and feel like saying to heck with it. I did Google, same thing I do, they say it may be familial.
Against lowering and against alcohol
I have a BIL who is an alcoholic. I have seen first hand what it can do to kids and the family as a whole, hate the stuff!!!!!!!!
Ear infections can be tricky sm
We have a Golden who gets ear problems and we have to take him to the vet, he won't even let us refill an old Rx without seeing him. Is it possible to speak to a regular pharmacist to see if he/she knows anything that might help? Sometimes you can just moist cotton swab the dirt out very carefully but it's very touchy as to what to use because you could cause problems for the dog. It's very sad. Check your local animal shelters to see if they have a vet on call for pro bono work. We have a greyhound dog track nearby and my sister takes her Maltese there for a really reasonable price the one day the vet is there.Good luck and God bless, we need more caring people.
tricky gifts
Whatever your specialty is in a nice bag or basket.
Coffee mix recipes with chocolate and cinnamon are good. I made chocolate dipped plastic spoons and those came out good too because you can use really nice chocolate.
There are a lot of ideas out there!
Ahh a tricky topic...let me tell you the one about.....
Hex nut in the urethra man. Yeppir, AND he was a repeat offender, having been brought in for numerous urethral extractions..... his hex nut being his best.
Then there was toothbrush swallowing guy. (really!) You would think the curve of the toothbrush would prohibit swallowing. This guy was also a repeat offender. Lightbulbs, toothbrushes, razor blades, whatever ya got!
I love these guys.
Must be tricky for picky eaters!
No child has ever turned this down. My cousin's son would not eat anything except four or five foods and she bet me he wouldn't eat it. You have to give them five bucks to "try it" and they keep eating it (at first they say it is just "okay", but will eat it anyway. I don't know why, it seems like it could be something yucky to some of them because it does have broccoli in it. They ate that too after having it served a few times.
Denise's Casserole
One large can of white chicken or two small cans drained.
Two boxes of Noodles Romanoff or similar from Noodle Roni - Prepared.
A bunch of broccoli and use only the "little trees" - wash, rinse and put in glass dish 13 x 9 or so and add a half cup of water. Steam in microwave about 3 minutes. Drain.
One small box Velveeta "grated" (it is soft, so that term is used loosely)
Mix noodles and chicken with a wooden spoon. Salt and pepper a little.
Move broccoli to the side and then Pam spray the 13 x 9 casserole dish and space out broccoli evenly in the bottom of the pan. Spread prepared noodles mixed with the canned white chicken over the broccoli. Cover it up!
Place Velveeta over all and bake in a 325-350 degree oven for about 25-30 minutes until bubbly.
Tell them at first that they only have to eat one tree. Next time, two. It worked with all my kids, with all my relatives' kids, and others. They start to like it and I let them help bake it. If they make it they are proud, so they will taste it. Branch out into other stuff slowly. My husband and I got tired of them wanting this three times a week, but it worked.
_________
Another thing, if they like spaghetti you can grate vegetables and put them in the sauce. Start out small.
You can also add grated potato and carrot to ground round with maybe some rice and grated onion (if you grate it they can't see it as well), eggs, etc. to make meatballs. Use cream sauce if they don't like tomato based sauce, like the jarred Alfredo sauce, or make your own with cream and parmesan.
Good luck.
Sounds like lowering calories
and getting a good variety of foods, not too high in carbs, might be the best diet choice for most people.
Lowering the legal drinking age from 21 to 18
I didn't know this was going on.....
The article is long so I didn't copy all of it. See the link below:
College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.
The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age.
"This is a law that is routinely evaded," said John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont who started the organization.
"It is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory."
Smokers inflict cancer causing agents to people every day, but there are states that
public places anymore and I say, hurray, it's about time! The state of Arizona passed a law overwhelmingly to ban smoking in public places and now it's in effect. If you're caught smoking in a public place you'll either be told to put it out, leave, or be arrested.
Speaking of walking through smoke when going in or leaving a store, I know exactly what that poster means, the only thing is I had to bring my child into that store with me. Prior to the new law, I told the manager how awful that was for me and my child and they had the trashcan/ashtray units moved further away. Still, it amazed me that people would still stand right there at the door and puff away with no regard for anyone else. Well, now, they really have it, but good. It's ILLEGAL to smoke anywhere near a public location, ie grocery stores, malls, library, hospital, any other stores and they can't smoke outside the doors or even on the property itself.
