Ask for first/last name and then call local police department
to see if they will do a check on these people to see if there are any reports of misconduct. This sounds too good to be true, actually. Light housing for free rent may lead to cleaning the pool and pressure washing the house.

I have been trying to find a room mate off Craig's List. There are many legitimate but why take a chance of ending up profiled on Nancy Grace, is my thought. Another woman I know who has done this successfully takes their name and birth date and calls the local police dept. She said when she tells them she is a single woman and about to interview a stranger for a roommate, they oblige.

I'd also say, take a gun if you have one.

Robbery is going to skyrocket in this economy. That is another concern.
The local police department told me to call them so
I called the department back (not 911) and advised them to please not tell anyone else that. I also had the email address for this person at Paws and sent her an email telling her sorry I got her at a bad time, did not mean to interrupt her day and to have a nice day. I went back within the next week to check again on this doggie, no other reason. Hubby did not particularly like when I told him (later after the deal done) but fed her again and then followed her to see where she was going. She went to some homes close around and I figured maybe that was where she lived. No one that I called there seemed to have wanted to give assistance. I could not bring her home when I first saw her because noticed she had droppy boobies and need puppies close around, but ?? I never expected a reply like that from someone who supposedly helps animals. Makes you kinda cynical, doesn’t it?
I would check with your parks and wildlife department. sm
I believe in Texas it is against the law. It used to be and I think still is.

Deer are beautiful animals, but they are very destructive. They are best admired in the wild.
I'd check with your state's unemployment department.
Likely they have better information than your co-worker. ;) They probably have a website with all the information about who is eligible, how to apply, etc.

Of course, if you don't like the job, there's really no reason to fight to stay on, if you can't meet their goals and expectations. And be sure to make a note of what you just said, about the working conditions, and the fact that the people aren't friendly certainly contributes to a hostile work environment.

Meanwhile... start perusing the "companies" section of this board (and the MT Companies section of MT Chat as well) to find names of companies that people like working for, hunt down their websites, and start applying online. And keep a list of the ones you apply to, when you applied, and what happened. You'll need that information if you are approved for unemployment, to prove you are job-searching.

I did what I just talked about above, and that was how I found my new job, after nearly 28 years working for a doc who closed his practice....

Best of luck, and keep us posted!
Thanks TravelinMT. Point well taken. I did check out the State Department's advisory
and they do have one, but they break it down into areas of Mexicos. Obviously, it is the border towns that are dealing with high crimes and they warn about going there. As far as the "tourist" cities such as Mazatlan, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta etc.. they ask you to use just common sense, as you have stated, not walking alone at dark, down alleys, and just caution with money etc.. I also travel to Mexico every year (love, love PV by the way) but this is the first time we've been to Cancun and everyone just freaked me out. I have always felt safe there. The people really do encourage tourism but that is how they survive in most cases.  I definitely would feeling safer walking around Mexico than some places in large US cities like in Chicago etc. Crime is everywhere. You just have to protect yourself and use common sense.
Check with your local art supply store

An artist's portfolio works great for things like this. They come in all sizes and are generally relatively flat. Link below is to a site that sells portfolios of different sizes. I don't know about their prices - you might do a little research.

Aging - How old is your Mom?
.
Aging parents
Well, ya know, you just do what you need to do during these times.  I helped care for both my folks and they each died in their mid 60s of cancer.  I did a lot of praying to find the strength and really kept remembering I only had one mom and one dad and after all they had given up to give us kids a good life growing up, it was the absolutely least I could do.  My brothers and sister were just great too and we got to the point we took shifts, even when they were hospitalized.  Looking back, we had some really very nice moments.  I can actually say I have no regrets and feel no guilt about perhaps what I should have done later.  If you do have siblings, ask for help.  Take care of yourselves as you really are not as capable of caring for your parents otherwise.

Anyone here caring for aging parents?

Whoof. This is so very hard. My mother is/was a brilliant educator, highly respected in her field.

We are walking a very thin line these days. I just hate it, and I do not use that word often.

We have found an assisted living facility that she likes, and I do as well. But, she is not liking the fact that she must decide. Oh, it is so very hard.

She was quite ill back in the summer, went to a nursing home for therapy (to recover from pneumonia), and then home. She is failing, and not going "gentle into that good night." She wants so very much to live on her own, but it is such a struggle. I am afraid for her, and I am so very tired.

Is anyone else living with this? If so, what do you do? I have read a thousand articles, talked with so many specialists, and still am lost.

I understand about the aging parents thing
because I was there also, older brother had died and just me for not only mother, father but also my stepmother whom I adored. My mother died first, then my stepmother and father killed in accident at age 90 but I worried so much about stepmom and father- I lived close enough to where I could be there in a couple of hrs and told them phone call away. It is not easy but I really understand. I think most of the younger crowd now is too much of a me generation for the same consideration.
as I'm aging, I do not like HEAVY pots/pans

La Crueset was too heavy for me as is cast iron plus cast iron is bad for people with hepatitis problem(s) so I tend to stay away from cast iron (puts off iron in the food and hepatitis C feeds on iron) as I have a family member with this particular hepatitis.

My hands are also very bad after transcribing for 30+ years - so I tend to want nonaluminum lighter cookware which would be something like Farberware or Revereware if they still make the latter.  *lol*

anyone have an aging dog on meds for arthritis pain??? sm

my bassett is 13 years old and has arthritis in her hips and probably other joints.  the vet put her on Carprofen and the first few days she did great!  then she started having diarrhea and acting like she's hurting again (shaking, panting, a little whining).  I told vet, she said to stop meds until she is over her "sour belly".  she tested her diarrhea and it was fine, no blood or parasites.  she went without her medicine for a day and a half and it showed, as she couldn't walk as well (which before she went on this medicine she couldn't use her back legs).  so i started giving her medicine again.  vet said the carprofen was going to be temporary.  i was reading some bad side effects for this medicine.  i think this medicine is making her have the diarrhea.  she's only been on the medicine for about a week and a half at the most.

just wondered if anyone else had pets with arthritis problems and what you used to help.  i'm not sure if i should try something alternative.  or maybe even Dr. Frank's spray.

thanks

They're supposed to be a normal part of aging...yuck! Dunno if a derm doc can zap them or not. nm

Sounds great but what department
do you find this in? Never have seen in my Publix but certainly don't mind asking. I will get and try, anything to keep those babies off the new stuff.
Go to a department store and have it professionaly done. sm
You don't have to buy all the expensive products that were used on you unless you want to. Just pay attention to what is used and then go to a discount store and use cheaper products.
I agree. The health department
needs to go in and take over. The poor little girl is probably dealing with an alcoholic or drugged-up mother or maybe she's mentally ill. The little girl shouldn't be living with such an irresponsible mother. At the very least the health dept needs to go in and fumigate and clean them up and monitor the house and family members. Better that than having 30 families trying to contend with this problem.
I guess I lucked out in the stepmother department
Because I honestly love her as much as my biological mother. I was 8 when my dad remarried, and to be honest, my sister and I were pretty much brats. It wasn't instant family love, but she and my dad worked together to make sure that none of us were treated any differently just because of who had which parent. She did look at it as an adoptive type situation and even gave me a cross stitch poem about how I didn't grow under her heart but in it. It has been 27 years since they married, I never call her my "step"mom except when I'm trying to clarify things for people, and I always tell people that I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters, not steps, halfs, full, whatever, because that is how we were taught. I know not every situation turns out like this, probably only a minority, but it does happen. I'm sorry if I offended anyone because that was not my intent.
I did contact the State Department. Sorry I asked....

I had no idea there was a website I could go to in order to get information, but I did find it after I posted my question. The travel advisory is largely for border towns.  As far as Cancun, they just ask you use common sense in travel i.e. do not go alone after dark or to "bad" parts of the city, careful with money etc. The same advice you would give someone visiting L.A., Detroit, or New York for the first time.

Ask the Department Stores that sell them. They often have travel sizes. NM

Good advice was given here. Suggest vet check-up for kitty needs vet check. sm
I've had 2 females over the years who developed stones/crystals in urine or UTIs.  Both of them started spraying inappropriately.  Never had a female spray inappropriately other than in these instances.  They go into spasm and can't help themselves.  If it is a urinary problem, eventually you may see slight pink-tinged spray if it gets that far untreated due to the irritation from constantly trying to pee.  One more thought is if the kitty is not sick, maybe the other cat won't let her use the litter box for some reason.  Maybe set up another box for her.
Call a minister or hospital social service department - nm

The department you deal with in Michigan for things like this is called "Friend of the Court".
You need to get in touch with your version of this in your state and tell them what is going on and file a form for re-do the visitation agreement. You may even have to see your original divorce attorney. We went through this with my husband's ex-wife and he filed papers to amend the visitation and what they call an "in pro per" form. Which basically is a DIY form. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but you need to get started now to get your ducks in a row.

Have you thought about talking to somebody at the local VA office in your state or city? Those guys are a wealth of information.

Good luck to you.
I used to do store security for a major department store - try this -
Go to the store and ask to speak with someone from the security department. Tell them what you have stated here. Hope they are able to help you!
We eat out mostly at the local pub.
We're lucky to have a real neighborhood Irish pub, and we like to meet up with friends there, listen to music, have a beer and a sandwich. It probably costs us about $30 for two of us. Since we're nearly empty-nesters, it's just DH and I who go out. Big, fancy dinners are usually just for birthdays or anniversaries.

When we're just too tired to cook, then it's "fend for yourself night" . My sons know how to cook. DH not so much. But he can make a sandwich, and there's usually something leftover that he can make. My youngest son is a good cook, and if I ask him he'll usually make dinner for all of us when I'm just too tired to bother.

Also, a Crockpot is a marvelous thing! I love it. A little planning and effort, and dinner is in the pot cooking all day and ready for dinner time.
Do you have a local library?
Cheaper to check them out and return after writing great recipes.  Just a thought....
The local car lot commercials
One in particular where the guy is huge and obnoxious and shouts his way through the whole commercial about his cars.  Why do they have to shout???

These are all so very neat! Thanks. How do I find my own town webcam? Thanks.

You're right - this sure is addicting! Ha! How fun! Here are a couple I have found that are fairly close to me.

I went to a local store
called Fred's Beds and caught our Simmons on sale. I think the set was only $900. I was thrilled.
Contact your local ACO....

Call your local animal control officer, or if you don't know the contact info for them, the police should.  It's their job to calmly address the situation.  It's not fair to you to listen to this poor animal all day long.  I would also mention that you fear for not only the animals safety, but also your own.  I'm sure it is on record anyway from the prior incident but wouldn't hurt to bring it up again.  I would definitely not approach the people one-on-one, especially given their past behavior.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

how about a donation to your local
animal shelter or the HSUS in her name.
the last few times I was in our local
all the people working the windows were pushing the 'forever' stamps, telling everyone about the rate increase coming and you should buy some now before it goes up again. One postal worker even told one of the customers if she lost the stamps for 5 years and then found them she'd be able to use em.

Personally, we snail mail so few things in our house these days that when I bought 3 books I figured they will probably last us about 5 years.
Local veterinarians...sm

Ask your local vet offices if they have a bulletin board for flyers.  And maybe pet grooming places?

we had a local company that came out to
maybe you just had a bad customer service rep?
I'm 4' 11" and our local Captain D's has taken to
dispenser nailed to the wall above the drink counter. I can't ever reach it. It's a minor inconvienece for me but what about people in a wheelchair?? I refuse to patronize that particular restaraunt and have written a complaint to the company but of course nobody cares.
Local library? (sm)

I actually used to be a book junkie, but since the economic times have gotten so...interesting, and they charge an arm and a leg just for a paperback these days, I have started checking stuff out from the library.  I almost won't buy a book these days.  Just is not worth it to pay those prices.

Anyhow, off my soapbox.  If you have a library nearby they should have most of the books.  Charlaine Harris is the author, and she has several other series, as well.

ask your local pharmacist. where I am it was

You need to find out from your local
law enforcement if there is a leash law there where you live. If there is a leash law you could get the owner of that dog in trouble.
Is he local to your area?
I've never been in this situation, but if he's newly widowed, perhaps a casserole and a card would be more practical for him than a plant or flowers?

If he's not in your immediate area, maybe you could send him some type of food/snack basket.

I don't know why I keep thinking in the direction of food. I guess I assume being newly widowed and apparently elderly, he might not be in a suitable frame of mind to take care of his nutritional needs. There are so many heartbreaking stories of an elderly spouse passing, and the one left behind simply stops taking care of their own needs and pass shortly thereafter.

I'm not good at dealing with situations involving death, so maybe my suggestions totally suck and someone will have some better advice.

I hope your niece is holding up okay.
Look in your local telephone book..

Well, because the company that has me on file is local, all I can do is sm
forward you to this legitimate website http://www.volition.com/mysteryUSA1.html

You will have to do a lot of legwork and contact the BBB, but it's worth it. Some are national, some are local. I am in south GA. So unless you are local, I can only forward you to this website. Good luck!
Well I complained to newspapers, local TV
station, Fox Network and told them they had lost one viewer even for events such as the Super Bowl if they had no more morals than that. I wrote the publishing company so if a lot of people did that, perhaps it had some bearing, but I suspect there is more to it than just public outcry against the network and publisher.
Is there a local park with tables to have it at?

Local news stations
often have a person who gets on the side of a consumer with a problem. Funny how putting the company on the news gets them to resolve issues quickly.

If you try to handle it yourself by taking stuff, the law won't be on your side no matter what.
Had a lap chole at the local hospital..
several years ago. At the time, I was a checker at a grocery store. My second day back to work a guy came through my line and said to me, "The last time I saw you, you were half naked, in a blue shower cap and drooling." He was my recovery room nurse...

A local restaurant had on its sign outside
AYCE DailEy specials...it was there for a while, but someone finally got smart and changed it.  This is a pet peeve of mine, too.  It drives my husband crazy at times when I start pointing out all the mistakes I see.  I saw one on some papers from school, but I can't remember what it was...but from SCHOOL...hello???
It was on the local news this morning.
There is this contractor in Cleveland, OH (I think) that was doing some remodeling work on this woman's house. He tore down a bathroom wall and the wall was stuffed with $182,000.00 of old money. The money is worth a lot more now.

Ok, here's the kicker. The contractor said he could have kept the money and not say anything to the homeowner, but he would have felt guilty. So, instead, he's suing her for the money siting a "finder's keeper's" law. The woman offered him 10% of either the money or the value of the money and he turned it down.

Me thinks he's kinda greedy. I say that this money was in the wall of a house that someone else owned and that it belongs to the homeowner.

Oh and he also hammered out some more walls, without the homeowner's permission, looking for more money.

JERK!!
