Cars that drive on the ground.

Posted By: JetsonsMT on 2008-12-02
In Reply to: Things you never thought would still exist - in the 21st Century! -sm

I was sure everybody would be having cars that fly by now.
Also, I thought that sidewalks would move and we would not have to walk at all.
I never thought we'd still be cooking on top the stove, I thought there would be replicators (little machines we hit a button and comes out our supper or drinks).

For some reason, the Walt Disney version of the future, a ride which no longer exists in Orlando, BTW was my idea of the 21st century. Turns out that it is much different.
Yet, what do we have that we would have never thought about?
The Internet. 30 years ago such an idea would seem impossible.

I agree with this. I drive all my cars to death.
I've been married 23 years, and between the hubby and I, we've had four new cars in all that time, five if you want to count the car he brought into the marriage with him, which was a couple of years old at the time. For me, I had a 1986 Aerostar van which I bought new and drove to death, and now have a 1998 Windstar van with 110,000 miles on it, plus a really cool custom Yakima rack for my kayaks! We do buy all of our cars new, and it's lovely to have long stretches without any car payments, like right now. DH is driving a 2001 Taurus. But he's got lots of miles on that due to long commute to work and traveling to clients. Bought that one with no money down at 0% because my hubby, a CPA, loved the idea of free money. So that was the biggest car loan we ever had, but the loan cost us nothing. The Taurus has about 160,000 on it, and DH is starting to warm to the idea of replacing it. We're considering either a camry hybrid to save on gas, or a nice sturdy Volvo, because statistics show that Volvos average almost 20 years on the road.
why ground him?
he may relate to this group, he has not been in trouble, these people may understand how feels about his life. His test was negative, why ground him, no doubt he is upset by what you did. Explain to him that alcohol is a lot more dangerous than marijuana. Keep dumb____ brother in law away, he is ignorant; tell every one so. Tell your son he is important. Tell him you love him, daily.
Wow - that could be a lot of ground
to cover! I'm in NC, and I'd save that trip for a time where you just want to relax at the beach or enjoy the mountains.

DC was great, but wow did it wear us out. The Metro was the way to go for getting around, but there was still a lot of acreage to cover on foot. That's one place it would be nice if they offered those motorized stand-up vehicles like mailmen use, but you'd need to be able to get one every time you got off the Metro.
I have 3 lbs of ground beef, and...

Personally, I could eat cheeseburgers every night, but the boys are pretty tired of that.  And I'm tired of all the other 'regulars' like meatloaf and tacos, and even shepherd's pie.  What else is quick and somewhat simple that is 'throw-together' from the pantry?

Of course, my 4-year-old is finicky, and I usually give him the options of eating whatever I make or going hungry, but hopefully I'll get some suggestions that might be up his alley, too.

I have 1 lb of ground beef in the
fridge and expect my husband to call any time now to ask "what's for dinner".  Any ideas? Yesterday I suggested taco salad, chili mac, chili and plain ole hamburgers but all got vetoed. Of course, he had no suggestions to help me out.
Ground beef
Ground beef
Tator tots
french style greenbeans - drained really well
cream of mush. soup diluted with milk enough to pour over top

Brown ground beef with your favorite seasonings.

Spray bottom of a baking dish with pam, layer with tator tots, spread green beans over that, then ground beef and top with cream of mush soup bake til hot and bubbly.
Stand your ground. Some day she will really "grow up" and
appreciate your concerns and your advice.

It's hard to be mom some days aint it?

Hang in there.
My dog Misha ate my rose bushes to the ground.
I saw her gobble up a rose my neighbor had just cut and laid on the ground.

My dad has trouble with squirrels snipping blooms and live branches off his hydrangeas, so they could be the culprit. And rabbits are notorious for stuff like that. You could try tying a terrier out there to guard them when you are home during the day I suppose.
-15 in Nebr tonight, snow on the ground
and have a cedar tree up ! now it feels like Christmas!! We had a high of 3 degrees today...but will warm up to 20s tomorrow and thats gonna feel like t=shirt weather :)
Melitta is wonderful if you're not using other fresh ground. nm

what??? He walks out on his mom when she tells him to stay in the house, and do not ground him????
I am sorry, but she was absolutely right to ground him.  He is hanging around with kids that are way older than him and drinking... You think it is okay to let that go??  I say he needs to learn that he is not the one in charge of this family and thatn Mom is...  Every family has rules for their children and if the rules for that family are broken, it is the responsiblity of the parents to dish out the consequences.  Yes encourage the good behavior and by all means tell them that you love them unconditionally every day (several times), but you are not their buddy, you are their parent
cars
I totally agree.  We were thinking about buying another car.  Both of our cars have around 97,000.  One is a van and needs a new sliding door and we have a smaller car that needs a left fender, but you're right no payments, which I totally adore, so I guess we'll fix both.  The van needs a major tuneup, but still cheaper than buying a new car.
Cars
I am really a sad case and actually have saved all the cars (almost) that I have ever bought. My car insurance man loves me because some of them are actually insured in case I drive them. Three of them are in the back of the house and are awaiting restoration whenever we "get around to intermediate telephone consultation" and one is actually ready to be painted and have the seats redone. I do care about engines and it has a huge one. We could use it to race for pinkslip (if we were so inclined). I like to start the engine and listen to it. I know that sounds crazy. One of my favorites is a volkswagon I got in my 20s and it now is an antique. I just bought another new car that I love and I am trying to force myself to sell the almost new one I was driving before I bought the brand new one, but when I start to sell it I feel like I am losing a "friend." Soon, I will need to rent a building to keep them in and get another extra job to pay all the expenses. I envy you the ability to keep your collection down to model cars. I like those too, but I can't drive them so that wrecks it for me. I want a vintage Jag and I know someday I will get one even if they do have bummer electrical systems. Glad to know I am not the only female who loves cars!
we got old cars too...sm

and both boys learned to do just about everything including pulling out a tranny and engine and going to the junkyard to find parts...

My fave was a ོ Pontiac Tempest...Way back when the boys were little I was pulled over by a young police officer who asked why the kids weren't in seatbelts...I said, "Well, they didn't become standard installation until 1967"...She didn't believe me, had to call in to verify the fact and just gave me a courtesy ticket.  Of course, I had them custom installed so I didn't get stopped in that small burg in upstate NY.

Love the old cars....No computer brain pieces that take out the entire electrical system....a coupla bolts to take out an alternator, couple to take out a starter...and they're made of real metal and don't crush like the plastic juice box cars they make nowadays.

Too bad the car companies haven't gotten around to installing rollbars in cars...But, then they're in the business of selling more cars, not saving lives.   Cat

Old cars

My 20-year-old nephew and I still talk about the times we spent going to the junk yard to find the fender, headlight, etc. for his Plymouth Horizon -- I think.   We had a great time and really bonded.  It just impressed me that they were not interested in muscle cars, or trucks or a Mustang and just happy and content that they had a car that ran and took them where they were going.  In fact, he was picked for graduate of the year with the most unusual car, also got picked for best looking, most likely to suceed and another one but could keep only one and he kept the one about the car because he said it meant a lot to him as we worked on getting the parts and then he and his step grandfather worked on putting it together.  Cost me all of $150 to help him replace the parts and gave me so much more in return.

P.S. I'm not into gas guzzing cars either.

$20,000 is less than most cars cost

You should have no problem getting a home loan for that amount ANYWHERE. They will probably try to jack up the interest rate because of your bad credit score, but don't let them. Bargain with them and if they won't deal, tell them you'll go to the bank next door. Get them down to 6.5% or less if you can.

Good luck!

I used to own only foreign cars
I had Mazdas when I was younger. Then I married my husband, and he works for a Chrysler/Jeep dealship so no more foreign cars for me, but I do love my Jeep.
Do teens still get cars of their own
Do people still buy cars for their teens or do they share cars?  Do you pay for insurance or do they have to get a job and pay for it?  My parents gave me nada, but that seems extreme, so I would like to know what other people consider normal.
AMEN! We had old cars that we put sm
in their names (they didn't drive them, they had their own cars) so that they could have an insurance policiy in their names. If we had put them on our insurance policy we wouldn't be able to afford insurance to this day because of the driving record! I laugh because the youngest is a firefighter now and drives the truck all the time! I guess all that "fast driving" prepared him for something! haha
This is an invitation to get crushed between cars when

natural bug cleaner for cars...anybody got one?
Does anybody know of a natural solution to remove bugs from your car without ruining the paint job?  thanks
I have two teens of driving age who both have their own cars. sm
My older teen is 19. She pays for her own insurance, but is on my policy. I will pay for my 17 year old until he is 19. I got them both used cars, and now if they want to sell them and get another one, that's up to them.
Pfaltzgraff, books, cars, shoes
When I was a rich yuppie I collected a ton of Pfaltzgraff (tea rose), then I decided I had way more than I'll ever use so I quit.  I'll never have enough books though.  I also have some cars waiting to be restored and my guy is into that.  We also have some toy vehicles that keep accumulating.  I need to get rid of some of the shoes though, its just so hard to throw them away!
That sounds strange, cars in with property but
now much do you have to pay?
I had a home when we married, stability yes and the cars
I had 2, a van and a bigger vehicle, both on their last tires. He first bought me a green Toyota, glad to get that and then went and traded for a silver BMW. I did not have a clue as to what he had bought me. That was 9 years ago and since that time he has bought me 2 more brand new BMWs. I am not looking that gift horse in the mouth! He is a jewel who had been my friend before marriage and I was not looking for anyone to marry when he happened along. Best move I ever made when I suggested marriage. Married in Las Vegas and happy ever since. I am finally spoiled and loving it.
Like Oprah giving poor people new cars

It never occurred to her that they couldn't afford to pay the income tax on them.

Anyone know organizations where people can apply for donated cars? (sm)
I am trying to help a family that is in desperate need of a vehicle so that the dad can keep his job and take care of his family.  They live far enough out that there are no buses and no one to carpool with.  I know there are organizations who can help. Can anyone direct me?  Thank you so much in advance.
After years of owning only American cars, I now own a Prius.
I'm getting 50 mpg even on the PA turnpike. I'm extremely happy with it and would buy another in a heartbeat. Earlier in the year, Toyota announced that they will be building Prius in the U.S., too.
Carfax relies on owners of the cars to report problems

We bought a "perfect" car, ྙ Olds (in 2000) that only had 45,000 miles on it. Loved that car but it was a flood car.The engine was still good but everything power plus the frame gave out in 5 years. Wouldn't pass inspection and had to junk it.

Nothing on Carfax had any of this info. So I'll never pay for a Carfax report again.

Also blessed w/a great hubs, partner, and father to the kids. Fixes our cars, scrubs the carpets,

It looks fun to drive, too! -- nm

So who is going to drive them to the
bank? You? I doubt they have a good enough credit rating to get the house, so just get your paperwork in order as quickly as you can and see if you can beat the competition to it, no matter who the competition is. While you stew, a whole other person might come in and snap up the house you want.
I can drive myself where I want to go! nm

low sex drive
Yep, I feel your pain.  It IS part of the menopausal cycle. Already talked to my doctor and a PA about this.  Guess what? There is nothing that they can do.  However, through my own investigation (and watching Oprah) there are bioidenticals. I went to a seminar in my area about it. I believe it can help, but it isn't cheap. Google this and read up on it.  It's very interesting.  You can try over-the-counter creams, they help somewhat, but they don't "get you in the mood". That's the hard part.  Good luck!!
Jealous of what? Because she can drive

Hard drive?
Hello...sorry for the beginner question, but if I purchase a hard drive, are they generic to any computer? Or do they need to be specific for the computer they are going to be put into? It's going to go into an HP Pavilion. I just want to get a 40GB hard drive that doesn't cost too much. Any info. would be appreciated.

There is a bar w/ a drive thru store
across the street from our apartment complex. One morning around 10/11am I saw a school bus go through there. I'm sure he/she was just picking something up for later but it just looked bad!
That's prey drive for you.
With Siberian huskies, I know all about that. Sasha has been known to catch birds, moles and squirrels. Misha got herself a rabbit once. I could see how proud she was, marching through the living room with it before taking it back outside. No I don't like it, but then again there are also hawks and snakes trying to get them also, even in my yard.

Sasha enjoys eviscerating a squeaky stuffed toy, but it's a pale comparison to the real thing for her. Thankfully she just carries the real animals around once they are gonners. It is unfortunate, but it's only inside the 6-foot privacy fence that they're in danger. Wish I could keep critters out. I even get snakes back there, but so far those just make Sasha bark for me to come see.

When we go to pet stores they would be happiest if they could spend most of their time in front of the small animal cages. They really want me to get them a ferret or rat, but that's not going to happen!

Drive your car to death

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- By keeping your car for 15 years, or 225,000 miles of driving, you could save nearly $31,000, according to Consumer Reports magazine. That's compared to the cost of buying an identical model every five years, which is roughly the rate at which most car owners trade in their vehicles.

In its annual national auto survey, the magazine found 6,769 readers who had logged more than 200,000 miles on their cars. Their cars included a 1990 Lexus LS400 with 332,000 miles and a 1994 Ford Ranger pick-up that had gone 488,000 miles.

Consumer Reports calls the Honda Civic a "Good bet" to make it to 200,000 miles.

Calculating the costs involved in buying a new Honda Civic EX every five years for 15 years - including depreciation, taxes, fees and insurance - the magazine estimated it would cost $20,500 more than it would have cost to simply maintain one car for the same period.

Consumer Reports' "Good bets" for making 200,000 miles: Honda Civic, Honda CR-V, Honda Element, Lexus ES, Lexus LS, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Prius, Toyota RAV4

Consumer Reports' "Bad bets" for making 200,000 miles: BMW 7-series, Infiniti QX56, Jaguar X-type, V8-powered Mercedes-Benz M-class, Mercedes-Benz SL, Nissan Armada, Nissan Titan, Volkswagen Touareg, V6-powered Volvo XC90.

Then it is worth a drive. I'm sure you will have a

And why do they have to drive in packs?
Everyone bunched up. Almost like it is an insult if someone passes them. I prefer to stay back and take my time. I think it's funny that everyone seems to end up stopping for the red light anyway. How much sooner do they get to their destination - 5 minutes?
How to drive them all crazy
I put random numbers and/or letters on the presents not to be revealed until Christmas morning, so no one knows whose is whose.  Gives me lots of chuckles year after year!
Was married to a man with zero drive sm

I mean, he seemed to have some drive in the very beginning, but after about a year he seemed to have no drive at all!  He would constantly complain about being tired...even after spending the entire weekend asleep on the couch.  He took antidepressants and it didn't help.  He took sleeping pills to help him sleep more deeply, didn't help and it wasn't so he would be "up" for fun either.  Hottie lingerie didn't work.  NOTHING WORKED.

We are divorced for some years.  When my oldest child was a teenager and would stay over at dad's with the new wife, he frequently heard his stepmother whine to his dad about always been too tired for relations and he didn't seem interested in it at all.  I thought...mmm...same argument new wife!  It wasn't me!!!

I have talked to enough of my friends to understand that some men lose interest or perhaps they lack any kind of a drive anymore.  This is why my friends and I all agree that you need a younger man so that when his interest peeters out you'll be slacking off too.  LOL

Why not drive down to your parents on
x
I would not drive after drinking it!
Use in place of wine:)
drive it until it dies!!!
when you say you can't afford anything over $2000.00 is that because you have 2K cash or you can afford the payments? My thing is I REALLY want a new car. I dont NEED it quite yet, but im getting there. I bought my first Honda Accord in 2001. 8 years later it is really starting to show signs of wear and tear... something is DEFINITELY wrong as it is making noises now but I haven't taken it into the shop yet. I am keeping my fingers crossed it is something like a plug and not a transmission or engine problem. I know the deals are great on cars right now... but like you said you have a bunch of other bills to pay and you have to sacrifice somewhere.

When you said get a decent car that will last you the rest of your life, what car at 4K will do that?? I dont think you should close your IRA until you have no other choice you know? unless do you have other savings? He isn't working now? you owe all kinds of other things? I mean... think about it. You already know the answer dont you!! :)
go to start, my computer, C-drive

cookies to start - and if you can find a history click on there - but if he is tech saavy - he will have already deleted all that via tools, internet options, and from there you can delete files and cookies and history - that's another way to see.....tools (top of browser), internet options, then settings and then VIEW FILES.......but if he deleted them - you won't find them, unfortunately

Go to my computer, highlight the drive sm
and make it run.  If it is a DVD, then you need to have a DVD drive.  If a CD, then you should be able to make it play if you only have a CD drive.
Bad idea to drive to NYC - take a train
once you get there - it costs a fortune to park and traffic is bumper to bumper!
Who'd a thought a cat could drive this thing?
