The web site CNet.com is THE bible for reviews and recommendations of all things geeky. I always read the editors reviews as well as user reviews before buying anything technical.
AVG gets high reviews from CNet as does Lavasoft's Ad-Aware antispyware. Both are free.
I was a fan of Norton's for years. My subscription to Norton runs out shortly and I called my empolyer's IT guru to find out if I should continue with Norton or switch to something else. He recommended AVG, said it is what the IT department uses on their computers and it's free.
My son had AVG on his PC for years with no problems. I've been running Ad-Aware for quite some time and it does a great job ridding my PC of spyware.
Go to CNet, read the review sections, and make a decision. You can also download products via CNet's site.
